Greek Religion

The Greeks were polytheistic, they believed in many gods and looked up to these gods for everyday. The Greeks didn’t believe that these gods created the earth but where apart of every aspect of earth. There are 12 main gods and main other less important gods. Each of these gods have a special ability or power dedicated to them for example Zeus was the god of thunder and cloud and Athena was the guardian of Athens. One would think that there’s a god for every single element on earth. For the Greeks, their god’s were everywhere. There’s a god for the ocean, sky, air, love, and hate. There is a god for almost everything basically. The leading god of all gods was Zeus. He ruled and watched over everything and everyone and lived on Mt. Olympus. Zeus’s wife was Hera, she didn’t really do much but be at Zeus’s side. The Greeks prayed to the god’s whenever needed. Like we pray to our god for good luck before a test or a game, the Greek prayed for almost everything because they believed in praying to their god’s. The Greeks prayed before they ate and before they basically did anything that could require some luck and good fortune to them. My family use to pray before eating, but we got

tired and lazy so we aren’t as committed as the Greeks were into their religion with praying for almost everything.

The Greeks also threw big parities or a huge festival that was to praise the gods. Instead of just praying to the gods the Greeks threw these festivals when they were in need of something of great importance. The Greeks held festivals for every month and for these festivals being a certain god would be the honored guest. In these festivals the Greeks would show their loyalty and love to that god by throwing a festival. It was a time of happiness and joy for all the Greeks and there were no worries for all Greeks were enjoying themselves. The Greeks even allowed people from other countries attend these religious festivals. In Greek religious rituals, the Greeks also held holy games or otherwise called the Olympics being that the games were very close to the gods they would consider calling the Olympics “Holy games”. As the Greeks athletes were competing in games, the Greeks believed that the gods were delighted for the performance, but it was the Greeks themselves who enjoyed the games more than anything. So these Olympic games weren’t for the god’s benefit and pleasure, but for the entertainment of the Greek people.

The Greeks religion was more in depth with their gods, sometimes when one would read about the Greeks, you would find something that has to deal with at least one god. The Greeks built temples for the most important ones, while the Egyptians, while they were polytheistic too, focused more on the pharaoh and pyramids than the Egyptians gods. Basically they Greeks were more into their gods than the Egyptians were, and the Egyptians kind of focused more and praising their pharaoh. An interesting fact about the Egyptians was that at one time under the rule of Amenhotep IV, he converted their religion from polytheistic to monotheistic. This change angered the Egyptians but was later restored to normal by the future pharaoh Tutankhamun. The Greeks never had a period were their religion was changed from polytheistic to monotheistic. From all of this I can say that the Greeks and Egyptians have a very interesting religion, some similar and some completely different. The Greeks have many gods as did the Egyptians, one with supernatural abilities and one who was just plain old gods. The Greeks in many of their beliefs featured gods that would sometimes interact in their activities. We have stories of the Greeks gods actually fighting others for justice while the Egyptian gods basically never punched someone or interacted in a battle as the Greek gods did.
