The thought of returning to school to complete my Bachelor’s degree terrified me for many years. I felt I was getting too old to attempt to learn again by memorization and test taking. However, the idea always stayed in the back of my mind. It was something unfinished. A very good friend heard about the University of Phoenix program and strongly encouraged me to attend the information session. A fire was ignited within me and I completed an application. I am now asked to identify my own personal goals for achievement at the University of Phoenix. My first reaction to this question was what have I done. After much thought, I can identify three main personal goals that mean very much to me.

First, completion of a Bachelor of Science degree will be a fulfillment of a dream that my parents instilled in me many years ago. Neither of my parents completed college. When I started nursing school, my parents strongly encouraged me to pursue my degree. I was attending a diploma school of nursing, but most of my academics had already been completed prior to attending. I da

bbled at the University of South Alabama and took courses required for a Bachelor’s degree in nursing. Upon graduation, I became a nurse and began my career. School was put out of my mind. Many years later, I returned to school to try and complete this degree. The school was 60 miles away and required me to stay overnight in another city. The cost and distance became a major factor. I was forced to stop because of the demands of being a single mother and working full time. I never had any time to spend with my daughter. My parents continued to encourage me, but I could always find a reason not to return to school. My parents have since passed away, but there is still a very strong desire to fulfill their dream and mine. It will finally bring a sense of closure. I have always been taught to complete what I have started.

Finally, the convenience of the University of Phoenix online classes gives me the opportunity to attend class when I am able to, not when the school dictates me to. My job demands a very large portion of my time and this form of education fits very well into my life style. I can now choose,
