The Rock

Holding your life in your own hands whether you are 5 feet off the ground or 5,000 feet off the ground is an experience like nothing else on this planet. Many climbers are weekend warriors; they might just drive up the canyon in their neighborhood, even to a destination some hours away. Other climbers travel the world looking for the ultimate route. The approaches to numerous climbs are an experience unto themselves, offering some of the most beautiful scenery in the world. Whether you are a professional climber or just a recreational adventurer, the rock wall that looms over your head are a challenge that none take lightly. Standing on top of the world after a vertical assault gives you a feeling of accomplishment and fulfillment that has you looking forward to your next climb, forever.
Utah offers the climbing world the most diverse types of climbing styles in one place. To the southeast in red rock country, there is the sandstone. This is slippery, coarse and crumbly. Salt Lake City's many canyons offer up granite and marble, in varying degrees of quality. Both are hard and unforgiving, revealing only miniscule hand and footholds. The northern part of the state has quartzite, among others. Quartzite has been likened to millions of tiny razor blades digging into fingers and toes. Proximity and variety of the rock in Utah make it a travel destination for many climbers from all around the world. Moab brings in climbers by the thousands; the desert climate makes it a good place for spring and fall. There are many national parks within a few hours drive that make it a popular spot. Although desert climbing is not for all, it offers a climbing style that is different than any other.
Scenery is not the reason most climbers climb, it is a byproduct of nature. Few of the best climbs in the world are 15 minutes up I-80, with an approach that you can complete without ever getting off the paved trail.
