The best that corporations can do is to create an environment that makes the best people want to stay1” -----Cor Peter An organization that stimulates creativity develops novel approaches to doing the work or unique solution to problems. Innovation is the process of taking a creative idea and turning it into a useful product, service, or method of operation. Thus, the innovative company is characterized by its ability to channel creativity into useful outcomes. When managers talk about changing an organization to make it more creative, they usually mean they want to stimulate innovation. Nevertheless, sometimes just have creative people is not enough. It takes the right environment for the innovation process to take h
old and prosper. Robbins and Coulter (1999) have identified three sets of variables that have been found to stimulate innovation: the organization’s structure, culture, and human resource practices2. Since CIM regard itself as one that encourages creativity, it needs to ensure all its supervisors and managers are providing creative and innovative culture within the organization. Among the ways it can do that, is to have managers and supervisors offer support, praise, reinforcement and rewards for creativity (Figure 1.2). Moreover, it requires a willingness to take risks, for both the leaders and the employees. To foster creativity or innovation means realizing that not every venture will prove productive. It also means giving employees the autonomy and responsibility to make decisions. Continuing to encourage employees to stay on the creative course, even if their previous ideas have failed. In order to be creative, employees need to have a broad knowledge base. Then it becomes important for managers to provide information and resources to allow innovation. In the future, as the size of CIM starts getting bigger and bigger, there will be more competitors they have to face up in both domestic and global market. For an international organization, fostering employee creativity and innovation will be a prerequisite in its organizational culture.
