The Importance of Good Academic Habits

"We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act but a habit." - Aristotle Academic habits can be seen as a mental attitude and behavioral practice that facilitates a student's learning and makes excelled learning and progressive development possible during the educational years. These habits are at the core of how a student learns and are the methods through which he assimilates any course material. All types of habits are particularly influential in one's life because with time they become natural to an individual, that is, they are often followed without a mental decision to do so. The older the individual, generally the more effort it takes to acquire new habits or change established habits. Consequently, it is uniquely important for students to acquire good habits and necessary self-discipline as they grow into adulthood. In this essay, we will first concentrate on academic habits, in particular those habits that will help the student become a better learner. Altho

Experiment - AP Biology Osmosis Lab

Introduction Cells are able to move through selective permeable cellular membranes. They must regulate moving necessary materials in and out of the cell in order to maintain homeostasis. Because of a cell's aqueous environment, it allows water to pass by osmosis or aquaporins. With osmosis, water can move throughout the membranes of a cell, down its concentration gradient. Water moves from areas of high potential and low solute concentration to areas of low potential and high solute concentrations. Diffusion is known as the simplest form of movement, where solutes spread from a high concentration area to a low concentration. This process requires no energy, but the movement of a low concentration to a high concentration requires energy by ATP. Since water molecules surround solute molecules, solutes decrease the concentration of free water. To describe the solutions separated by selectively permeable membranes, there are three terms: hypertonic (higher solute concentration and a lower

Soldier's Home by Ernest Hemingway

Ernest Hemingway's "Soldier's Home" is a story of a soldier who returns from World War I as a transformed person. The story depicts his inability to fit back into the society. Krebs is at home but he doesn't feel at home. He is with family but he doesn't feel he belongs there. Like various authors Ernest Hemingway tried to portray his own life after he came back from war throughout the character of Harold Krebs. As much as Krebs believes in the truth, people around him force him to lie. The story precisely manifests the conflict between Krebs value, which has dramatically changed after his war experience and society expectation toward him to conform to its traditional values. Eventually to maintain his existence Krebs has to choose isolation by detaching himself from social relations, love, religion and ambition. Ernest Hemingway explored the moments of his personal life and the same struggle he had experienced in his hometown after returning from World War I throughout Harol

The Monster and Victor Frankenstein

To many, the term "monster" conjures images of gruesome or mutated creatures. These typically hideous and prowling creatures often commit horrible acts of violence with no concern for the feelings, opinions, and safety of others. Yet, monsters come in many forms and not all are of malicious or evil intent. Mary Shelley's literary creation, "Frankenstein," is one example of how appearance - however grotesque - does not necessarily determine what lies beneath the surface. In the book, Victor Frankenstein is what one may call, "a mad scientist," as he attempts to step into the god-like role of creator of human life. His macabre creation appears, by all accounts, to be the textbook monster; tall, ugly, imposing and powerful. The scientist becomes obsessed with his "child," but upon its completion, flees from its presence seeing it for the monster it appears to be. Due to Victor's need for fame and desire for power leads to Victor becoming a monster. Victor begins his quest to bring life to a dead person because he does not want anyone to feel the pain of a loved ones death. At first, he is not obsessed with his project. As he moves along in the project, he thinks about what w

Overview of Puck in A Midsummer Night's Dream

In the beginning of Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night's Dream," Theseus, the Duke of Athens, is counting down the seconds until he is to wed his new "trophy" Hippolyta, the Amazonian Queen. Hippolyta is also counting down the seconds, but she has a much more negative outlook on the matter. While these individuals are pondering how much time really exists between that very moment and the time it will take for the next four moons to come and go, Theseus hears a dispute between Egeus, and his daughter Hermia. Hermia is in love with Lysander, but Egeus is behaving like Bottom, who is an ass, and wishes his daughter to wed a man named Demetrius, for no clear logical reason. After a series of events the characters arrive in the woods along with Oberon, the fairy king, as well as Puck, his mischievous fairy helper. Oberon then happens to overhear a conversation between Helena, and the man she loves, Demetrius. After Demetrius makes it painfully obvious that he has absolutely no posit

Valentine by Carol Ann Duffy

Question How does Duffy present love in "Valentine" and one other poem you have studied? Response In the poems "Valentine" and "Adultery," love is presented in very different ways. "Valentine" describes the gift for a lover, such as one you would give on Valentines Day. However, the gift is just an onion. The poem describes why it is a powerful gift of love, rather than roses or chocolates. The onion becomes a metaphor for love. In "Adultery," Duffy writes about the sense of danger and excitement of an adulterer, through the eyes of the person who is betrayed. The title "Valentine" creates certain expectations, which Duffy doesn't satisfy. The idea of Valentine is love and the onion is not a very good way of showing it. Valentine gifts show how important the person receiving it is to the person giving the gift, so an onion won't give the best impression. Duffy spends the rest of the poem proving to us how the onion is more faithful and reflects the true nature of love. In this poem, D

Violence and Death in William Shakespeare's Macbeth

Question How violence in the play is so excessive that is ceases to have any effect on the audience.' To what extent do you find the violence in the play excessive? Response The violence presented on stage in "Macbeth" is merely just an element to distress the audience. It is suggested that "violence in the play is so excessive that it ceases to have any effect on the audience". However, through the use of violence, Shakespeare not only serves the purpose of lending the play to the gothic genre, but the quantity of violence works as an effective catalyst in order to unease the audience. Firstly this gothic drama is titled after the protagonist "Macbeth" proposing that this character is the mechanism of

Short Story - Memories of the End of the World

It is the darkest day in December; today is the day that the world ends. I am new to the age of 16, and in my junior year of high school. Today is the extraordinary day that we have all been anxiously awaiting. As I sit nervously, hands trembling with fear and dripping with sweat, I suddenly see the lights as bright as the stars above glow on my face and the sound of the excited crowd talking restlessly with unknown words. I close my eyes for just a brief moment and try and remember why the hell I would get myself into something like this. I awoke, eyes wide with fear, trying to muster up the strength to leave the comfort zone I call my bed. I can never forget; it was December 21, 2012, bright and early at 6 o'clock in the morning and I knew this day would be both an adventure and an experience. Leaving my room that morning, moving slowly, I glanced up at the handbill that had been carefully pinned above my door for around a month now. The flashy and humungous writing reads, "End

Independence and Injuries in Children

At a young age, when the minds and bodies of children are progressing through the physical and mental developmental stages, children are at an increased risk of unintentional injuries as they begin to explore their independence and curiosity. Unintentional injuries occur without the intent of harm. This paper will identify the different types of play, and explore some of the challenges associated with the prevention of unintentional injuries. The term "free-play" often refers to play that does not revolve around external rules and structures. As noted in the journal article Risky Play and Children's Safety: Balancing Priorities for Optimal Child Development written by M., Brussoni, L L., Olsen, I., Pike & D A., Sleet, 'there are 3 main f

Macbeth - Summaries of Scenes from Acts I, 2, 3 and 4

Act I, Scene 7 "Out damn'd spot! Out, I say! One-two. Why then, 'tis time to do it. Hell is murky." - Shakespeare's "Macbeth" In this scene, Lady Macbeth is basically emasculating Macbeth for not wanting to carry out with the plan. After Macbeth explains how he has won respect, Lady Macbeth calls him a coward and questions his courage by saying, "Art thou afeard to be thine own act and valour as thou art in desire? Wouldst thou have that which thou esteem'st the ornament of life, and live a coward in thine own esteem, letting "I dare not " wait upon "I would, " like the poor cat i' th' adage?" This scene haunts her because she basically caused Duncan's murder. If she hadn't pushed Macbeth, Duncan could have potentially been alive. Act 2, Scene 2 1. Yet who would have thought the old man to have had so much blood in him? 2. What, will these hands never be clean? 3. Here's the smell of blood still. 4. Wash your hands, put on your nightgown, look not so pale. 5. To bed, to bed; there's

Law Abiding Citizens and the Right to Bear Arms

"The world is filled with violence because criminals carry guns. We decent, law abiding citizens, should also have guns - otherwise they would win and decent people would lose." - James Earl Jones The Second Amendment of the American Constitution states that every U.S. citizen has the right to own a gun: "A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms shall not be infringed" (Constitution, 160). No matter what situations take place in the world that right should never be taken away. American tragedies involving guns such as Columbine, West Hollywood bank robbery, and The DC Sniper have never prompted a social outcry for gun control so, in light of new tragedies such as Sandy Hook, Virginia Tech, and the Aurora Movie Theatre shooting. Why such a cry for gun control now and not in the past? The birth of guns started in China, where gunpowder was first created. In the ninth century huo yao, charcoal, saltpeter, and sulfur was blended into a powder by alchemist and was used t

Wedding Toast Speech - Best Man Point of View

It's always such a special occasion to see two people who have truly been through it all – finally tie the knot. I know that as best man, I am supposed to make some cheesy speech about our past and how Nick and Nicole will be together for eternity, or I could simply embarrass and reveal ridiculously embarrassing stories about Nick - but I thought I'd change it up a little and talk about the bride and how amazing she is. It feels like just yesterday when Nick and I were just in 7th grade riding our bikes to school and talking about how we want our lives to be perfect when we're older and we want to marry the perfect girls, I didn't realize until recently that we're not so perfect ourselves and we'd be lucky to even convince a girl to marry us. (pause for laugh) Nicole – where do I start? You are an amazing person, you truly are.

Steve Jobs' Speech - Stay Hungry. Stay Foolish

On June 14, 2005, Steve Jobs delivered a very strong and powerful commencement speech to the graduating class at Stanford University. The purpose of the speech was to persuade the graduates about importance of being true to yourself, following your heart and intuition, and living authentically throughout your career. The central idea of all his speech was about finding a career based on personal passions. It is a great advice for people who is going to get out of familiar environment for something big, for a new world of difficulties, losses and wins, fails and falls. The speaker divided his speech into three stories about his life, such as "connecting the dots", "love and loss" and "death." In the first story, it is said that he was adopted and his parents promised his biological mother that he would go to college. He chose very expensive college, however then he decided to drop out t

Changing the World with Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs)

Within the past 200 years, the world population has grown at a faster rate than ever before. With a population of well over six billion people, we need more food now than we ever have in history. Farmers have always been on the lookout for ways to increase their yields (or the amount of crop produced per acre) so when genetically modified organisms were first created by Monsanto scientists in 1982 (Beckrich), farmers immediately recognized just how great such an organism would fit into the rapidly changing world of agriculture. These genetically modified organisms (or GMOs) could generate higher yields, leading to an increased supply of food and products created from these plants. Unfortunately, these GMOs are met with much opposition from organic farmers and consumers. Genetically modified organisms should continue to be planted, because the benefits far outweigh any negative aspects, and they can help solve future world hunger problems. The process of creating a genetically modified

Existential Meaning of A Clean Well-Lighted Place

Life is virtually an empty void that humans try to fill with their own beliefs and definition of meaning. Many pieces of literature written in the mid 20th century recognize this concept. In "A Clean Well-Lighted Place," by Ernest Hemingway, the ultimate futility of life is expressed through the use of characterization, symbolism and dictation. Hemingway uses characterization as one of the main ways to draw attention to the ultimate futility of life. He uses the three main characters to represent the fact that as people age their purpose decreases. In the short story, the young waiter is the only character with a purpose in life. When talking about the old man, the young waiter says an hour is worth "more to me than him"" (2). The young waiter thinks he is more important than the drunk man because he has a purpose. He has yet to realize the nothingness that human life is. The middle-aged waiter, however, is beginning to realize that life will eventually end, and neither purpose nor mea

My Pursuit of a Phd. in Water Science Engineering

I decided to become an irrigation and water management engineer, having in my memory the fresh image of my home district, Takhta Kopir, which has been tremendously affected by Aral Sea Disaster. Once the world's fourth largest saline water body, the Aral Sea has been steadily shrinking since the 1960's, reaching only 7% -10% of its original size by 2010. This caused a huge increase in the water salinity level, which killed almost the entire sea flora and fauna. During this period, I myself experienced what water scarcity meant for people and farmers. My grandfather was a farmer who had about 150 hectares of land. In my childhood every vegetation season we used to live in a farmhouse spending most days in the fields where everyone was involved in cropping and irrigation. Because of the profound damage on the agriculture caused by a long drought between 1999 and 2001, all the family was forced to leave our beloved land and farm. This bitter experience motivated me to get actively involve

Roman Catholic Theology and Contemporary Culture

In this essay, I will look at the significance of the Vatican II. I will address the need for Catholic theologians to address specific issues challenging the Roman Catholic Church and will also debate the rethinking of Catholic theology by Rahner and Kung who worked towards developing a new Catholic theology that would be pertinent to contemporary culture. I will explain any lessons learned with concern as to how theology needs to respond to the changes in culture. In January 1959, Pope John XXIII organized a church council almost a hundred years since the last one was held. The Vatican II council was a meeting of the religious chain of command explicitly for the purpose of executing judicial and doctrinal works. They met at St. Peter's Basilica and discussed issues in four sessions held between 1962 and 1965. Pope John XXIII aspired to generate an atmosphere where the church would participate in all the facets of the current cultures. It was Pope John XXIII who chose both Hans Kung, a Swiss Roman Catholic theologian and Karl Rahner, a G

Hamlet, Love and Ophelia

In William Shakespeare's "Hamlet," the title character's love for Ophelia comes into question. Throughout the play, Hamlet's emotions and feelings for Ophelia are never publicly made known, which lead many to question if he is merely using her or loves her. However, there is evidence that demonstrates that he truly cares and loves Ophelia in the way he behaves around her when they are alone. In this essay I will demonstrate that Hamlet's feelings for Ophelia are true and he loves her. Throughout the play there are key passages and actions that demonstrate Hamlet's affinity for Ophelia. Hamlet being discreet and personal time and time again reassures Ophelia of his love for her. On numerous occasions he expresses his love via letters, word

Mary Fisher and HIV - A Whisper of AIDS

"Mary Fisher, the HIV-positive daughter of the wealthy and powerful republican fundraiser Max Fisher, stood in front of the crowd to tell the audience: 'If you believe you are safe, you are in danger'" (McGee). Fisher included her these words in her speech, "A Whisper of Aids," in August 18, 1992 at the Republican National Convention to a crowd who had open ears and sympathetic hearts. "Fisher stood in front of those curious eyes indecisive on if she was ready to let the world know" (Shaw). Fisher deliberately molded her ethically sound line of reasoning by using the verbal appeals of ethos, logos and pathos. Coming into the convention "Fisher carried a lot of credibility being the daughter of a powerful republican and a worker in Gerald Ford's white house" (Shaw). Fisher opened people's eyes and showed them that no one is safe, "the fact of AIDS has changed from being primarily a disease of white men, to a disease of people of all colors a

Suicide as Revelead in the Poetry of Hughes and Robinson

"Poetry is when an emotion has found its thought and the thought has found words." - Robert Frost In the poems, "Suicide's Note," by Langston Hughes and, "Richard Cory," by Edwin Arlington Robinson (reprinted in Thomas R. Arp and Greg Johnson, Perrine's Sound and Sense, 10th ed. [Fort Worth: Harcourt, 2001] 16 and 385), both Hughes and Robinson speak of suicide even though they take different approaches to the topic. Hughes' and Robinson's works qualify as poetry because their writings are an emotion found in all cultures and eras that found words to express themselves and, according to Robert Frost, therefore qualify as poetry. In Hughes "Suicide's Note," the reader is told the story through the speaker's eyes. Using only three lines Hughes is able to convey the speaker's desire for death. Hughes uses the repetition of the "k&q

All the Pretty Horses by Cormac McCarthy

Cowboys ride through the unknown, bonded to their horses. These lonely desperados encounter romance, gun fights, and gorgeous sunsets in the cordilleras of México and Texas. Cormac McCarthy incorporates all the dramatics that make up a great western in his novel, "All the Pretty Horses." Crumbling from a once passionate tale of young love, the story develops into a desolate journey of one man and his caballo. While standing over the body of a slain doe, John Grady has an epiphany. As a cowboy, he is condemned to a life full of pain which will enable him to fully experience the beauty of the land and her beasts. John Grady approaches his illuminating moment by learning that the love he will share with women is fleeting, and that in the end, he will never share a bond with a human that is as strong as with his horses. "He saw very clearly how all his life led only to this moment and all after led nowhere at all" (254). The lonely theme begins to follow John after proposi

Narrative Essay - My Military Training

I raised my right army and swore, "I, ______ __________, do solemnly swear that I will support and defend the constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will obey the orders of the officers appointed over me, according to regulations and the uniform code of military justice. So help me God." My body tensed as they took my fingerprints to finalize my enlistment with the U.S Army. I was to ship in a couple days that would change my life forever. Little did I know it was going to be a very rigorous six months full of challenges I'd never thought I would have to face. It was going to be a summer full of sweat, tears, determination and personal courage. My first initial transition from civilian to soldier was walking up on a bus after traveling several thousand miles to basic training at Fort Leonard Wood. A drill sergeant appeared from the door of the bus and "bulldozed" his way onto the vehicle. He barked to the new recruits, "No

David Hume - Human Nature and Understanding

As the author of several well-known works such as "Treatise of Human Nature" (1739-1740), "An Enquiry Concerning Human Understanding" (1748) and "Dialogues Concerning Natural Religion," David Hume is one of the most influential figures to hail from Great Britain (Morris). Often grouped with John Locke and George Berkeley, Hume is known as the last of the great triumvirate of "British empiricists" (Morris). Empiricism is a theory of knowledge branching from the field of epistemology that asserts the idea that knowledge arises via sensual experience. Empiricism stresses the role of experience and evidence in the formation of ideas over the notion of reason. Several eminent figures in history from philosopher Immanuel Kant to economist Adam Smith to biologist/naturalists Charles Darwin and Thomas Huxley credit David Hume as being the central influence in their writings. Hume's strong empirical views are clearly evident in his book, An Inquiry Concerning Human Understanding. He begin
