Book Banning and The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn

While some of its material is considered offensive and crude, "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn," by Mark Twain, should be taught in classrooms due to its well-established, unquestionable literary merit. This controversial novel does indeed evoke anti-racist themes, as it accurately depicts a period in American history while developing a palatable backdrop to what many consider to be "the great American novel." Starting from when it was published in 1885, Huck Finn has been a center of controversy for many years. In the novel's first wave of controversy and censorship, critics focused on the vulgarity of the novel. The Concord Public Library banned it in 1885, charging that the novel was "trash suitable only for the slums" (Karolides 398). It makes sense that some would be concerned about the vulgarities, and the lifestyle that Huck Finn lives. He lives a very free and naughty lifestyle. He smokes, he drinks, he "swears, steals fruit from farmers' pastures,

The Cask of Amontillado and Poe's Use of Irony

Edgar Allan Poe, the author behind the eerily vengeful short story, "The Cask of Amontillado," uses carefully constructed irony to solidify the intended deeper meaning to his somewhat twisted tale. Instead of having the character simply lure his victim threw his plan he has the character basically taunt the poor character of Fortunato. Be it something the character says or an action he commits irony is a big part of this story, almost as big a part as the theme of revenge. To start off, while Montresor is dragging Fortunato down to the vaults through the catacombs he takes notice that Fortunato is not in good health and he repeatedly says to Fortunado, "are you sure you want to continue your health is precious" which is a show of dramatic irony because we know that Montresor is taking Fortunato down there to kill him. Also, this is verbal irony because even though Montresor hates Fortunato he is showing a facade that he cares and it is a bit of

Othello - Relating to a Modern Day Audience

The main reason behind Othello's ability to withstand the currents of time is the fact that Shakespeare used universal human themes in the play. Themes such as racism, jealousy and love are values that have persisted in human society. Therefore it is no surprise that when these themes become the most important part of the storyline in Othello. It is the ability of a piece of literature to move the crowds by the core values and human emotions of each and every individual that makes it popular. The play Othello has succeeded in achieving that. Among the main themes is racism. Othello, the title character, was a Moorish general serving the Venetian government. Being a black, he was subjected to so many different forms of discrimination and hatred by others around him. Iago who was his ensign was probably the worst racist in the play "old black ram tupping your ewe" to Brabantio, "thick lips" and he describes Othello as a "Barbary horse." W

Flowers for Algernon by Daniel Keyes

In this essay, I will discuss several important aspects of the novel, "Flowers for Algernon," by providing facts and opinions highlighted in the novel as well as those of other learned people. The first question concerns Algernon and how he acts as an alter ego for Charlie Gordon. In the second question I shall discuss the ethical issues which the intelligence-increasing experiment, that takes place the above mentioned novel, faces by voicing the opinion of others as well as providing my own. The third and final question relates to how the experimental procedure affected Charlie and how the operation improved his intelligence, how it affected his relationship with other people as well as his personality. From the first time Charlie is introduced to Algernon, he feels a sense of connection with the small white mouse, though it is only after his operation that he understands the nature of this connection. Charlie and Algernon are both alike in the sense that they are both one of a kin

Reflections of Feminism in Mulan

Gone were the days when Maria Clara used to nest in home and sweat for her family needs in day-to-day life. Now, she brings her armor out from her closet and fights a battle even risking her life to death. In the Disney movie, "Mulan," the role of feminism reflects what kind of women the present society has. No more Mom stays home and keeps house when Dad puts on his suit and heads to the office. 21st century women can surpass what men can do. One need to get her own identity because identity is the key of all human beings. Thus, "working women " now step outside of the home to contribute and play a role to society. That's what Mulan did. She tries to imitate males' characteristics, although society raises eyebrow, she never fails to prove that she can be one of the men and be able to bring honor not only to her family but to China. Men have more strength and will. Yet they are emotionally weak. This might be difficult for some to understand, however this is simply an evolution. Mulan

An Analysis of Socratic Irony in The Apology

Plato was known for his use of irony in his writings, and when Socrates addresses the court in "The Apology," these aspects are apparent to most readers. According to The Oxford Dictionary of Philosophy, the Socratic method of teaching is "the method of teaching in which the master imparts no information, but asks a sequence of questions, through answering which the pupil eventually comes to the desired knowledge. Socratic irony is the pose of ignorance on the part of the master, who may in fact know more about the matter than he lets on" (Blackburn, 2008). Socratic irony is separately defined in the dictionary as "Socrates's irritating tendency to praise his hearers while undermining them, or to disparage his own superior abilities while manifesting them" (Blackburn, 2008). I will attempt to analyze Plato's use of irony throughout the Apology and look at various modern day philosophers' points of view on the subject. Socrates is known as one of the greatest philosophers of

Movie Summary - Run Lola Run

The multi-linear narrative structure of "Run Lola Run" challenges the idea that a situation can be resolved in only one way. This essay will discuss how relationships between cause and effect contribute to the film's multi-linear narrative. The term "multi-linear narrative " refers to a story which is capable of branching off into different directions depending on the choices of the viewer or the development of events, dictated by set parameters within the media. This can include the possibility of the story looping back on earlier sections, and is often used to mimic the structure and recall of human memory (Askham). Interactive games generally take the form of multi-linear narratives, which is why "Run Lola Run" has been compared to a video game. Cause and effect, or causality, is one of the central motifs of the film, and refers to the relationship between two events, wherein the second event is a consequence of the first (Askham). "Run Lola Run" is a German thriller that follows

A Truly Disastrous Trip to My Homeland, Pakistan

It was my first time traveling alone. I was going back to Karachi, Pakistan to visit my extremely ill grandmother. This would be my first time going to my homeland in over seven years and I thought this trip would have been the best trip of my life; but I was wrong. In fact, after this trip to Pakistan, I decided that I would never return. I arrived in Karachi Airport around 10:30am on June 10th. My uncle was waiting for me in the arrivals waiting area, ready to help me with my bags. As we were putting my stuff in the trunk of his car, a street beggar came and asked us for money. Because neither my Uncle nor I had spare change in our pockets, I didn't have any spare change on me and neither did my uncle so we ignored and just walked away. It is said if you ignore a beggar, the beggar can ask god to give you a hard time, and during this trip I find no reason not to believe it. The plan was to stay at my grandmother's house for about a week and then go to Dubai for the rest of summer to

Protecting and Preserving America's National Parks

The National Park Service (NPS) was created August 25, 1916 to manage all U.S national parks and monuments. The NPS is an agency of the United States Department of Interior. In the U.S, there are 58 national parks under the management of the NPS including what may be the most popular, the Grand Canyon and Yellowstone. National parks are home to many wildlife species of both plants and animals, some of which can only be found in a national park. Also, national parks are tourist attractions, simply so people can enjoy some of Mother Nature's beauty. National parks don't only give a home to plants and animals and give tourists a nice spot to vacation but, they also give us a healthier environment and an opportunity to learn. None of us can live without fr

Russian Theater and Anton Chekhov's The Seagull

In Russian theater, Anton Chekhov is an icon of modern naturalism. His plays, like his stories, are studies of the spiritual failure of characters in a patrician society that is inevitably destabilising. With its high point around the 1880's naturalist theatre, having roots in 18th century realism but separate to, attempted to mirror life with utmost devotion. The movement in the theater of Chekhov away from the extremely emphasised expression of scenic emotion went hand in hand with the gradual de-emphasis of movement and physical actions on the stage: instead where all characters became the product of their environment. Treplef's passionate monologue is better worth quoting as a first step in this analysis of naturalism in early 20th century theatre, as deconstructed through the naturalist play "The Seagull." The emergence of naturalism did not mark a radical break with realism, rather the new style being an extension of the old (Ekambaram, 2012). The term was invented by Émile Zol

Thirty Six Hours in Qatar

Having such a great job has given me the opportunity to travel around the world to some of the most unique and exciting cultures. On this business trip, I am traveling to the Middle Eastern city of Doha, the capital of Qatar accompanied by my wonderful girlfriend Karen. We will be flying into Doha's airport, New Doha International Airport (NDIA) on Wednesday July 23rd at 8am, and return home the following day at 8pm. Since this trip is in the dead of the summer we are expecting extreme heat, and the forecast is showing a high of 109 degrees and a low of 91 those two days we will be there. Many travel websites have indicated that primarily light clothes are vital to surviving this brutal heat, and also recommended sun cream and sunglasses (Virtualtourist.com). Since I am bringing my other half along with me, I had to also research what sort of clothing is acceptable for women to wear. Women's clothing is said to avoid offending the Muslim sensibilities: knees, shoulders, and upper arms

The Great Gatsby - Symbolism and Double Meanings

One of the literary devices that F. Scott Fitzgerald uses throughout "The Great Gatsby," is symbolism. He uses an abundance of symbols to subtly express his intended concepts and underlying themes. The meanings of these symbols are almost never given directly to the reader in the text; this makes the meaning personal to the reader. Fitzgerald makes the reader search for the meanings in the book, which makes it much more exciting to read. Some of these symbols are the green light at the end of the Buchanans' dock, Gatsby's car, and Dr. T.J. Eckleburg's billboard. These three symbols mean far more that what the reader first thinks, which is how Fitzgerald does such an excellent of expressing their meaning throughout the book. Most of Fitzgerald's symbols have a double meaning, each of these meanings add a different dimension to the novel that allows there to be two different sides to the story. Advocates of these double meanings are able to understand the deeper meaning of the novel. "

Financial Picture of the European Union (EU)

It was envisaged in the early 2000's that in the next decade, the first Central and East European Countries (CEECs) would almost certainly press in joining the European Union. This entails that the EU's strategy of structural support for these regions that are dealing with economic complexities and transactions will have to be taken up for the new member states. Since all potential new member states will, perhaps in not all aspects, be distinctly more disadvantaged in the time and process of appointment, there is no telling on how they could resort to utilising the EU's support. Most significantly of all, they will all become eligible for the most rigorous measure of structural assistance and funding, which will result in increase of EU expenditures considerably. In the perception of many onlookers, the Union's stress in tackling structural/cohesion funds for these EEC countries is one of the crucial obstacles of its enlargement. Even though economic assimilation within the EU has m

A Life Lesson in Masculine and Feminine Identities

Before my freshman year, I decided to chop off all of my hair and get a very short pixie cut. I had always had long, brown hair that went down to my butt. In middle school, I would wake up two hours before I had to leave the house so that I could shower, blow dry, and curl my hair. After three years I was fed up with all the work that came with having this long, girlish hair so I decided that I wanted to cut it all off. When I asked my friends and family if they thought that a shorter haircut would look good on me they all told me the same thing, which was "short hair is for boys ". They questioned why I would voluntarily get rid of my beautiful, girly long hair and told me that I should want to make a good impression for my first day of high school. Everyone insisted that I wouldn't want to look back on my freshman yearbook and be filled with regret towards my boy

A Study in Hemispheric Specialization

Abstract Hemispheric specialization showed how the two different hemispheres held advantage in conducting various tasks. A divided visual field task tested whether pattern recognition would have an advantage towards a hemisphere. Based on previous research it is hypothesized that the right hemisphere would have an advantage towards tactile pattern recognition. This experiments had eight participants participated in a task that separated images into two different categories. One that had distinct patterns or one that did not. The results showed that the reaction times were unreliable and it was not consistent with the current research. Based on the result of this experiment, there was not an advantage in the hemispheres that distinguished patterns that showed that global processing was not apart of pattern recognition. Introduction What part of the brain does a person use when distinguishing whether if there was a pattern present? Previous psychological experiments have discovered th

The Consequences of Poor Nutrition in India

Poor nutrition intake is a pressing issue in India, hurtling the health of our country into a state of emergency. Almost half of children under the age of three are underweight; 74% of are anemic and 30% of newborns are born with low birth weight. The largest determinant of under nutrition among the population is micronutrient deficiency of Vitamin A, iodine, and iron. The most highly affected populations are children under 3, women who are pregnant or lactating, and more specifically, those in rural areas and "scheduled castes and tribes." Risk factors for this nutritional emergency include food insecurity, education level (especially of mothers), inappropriate feeding practices, inadequate health services, and is plagued further by the vicious infection-undernutrition cycle. The implications of this nutrition crisis extend into the education and productivity of children and the future economic growth of the country. There has already been a great deal of progress made in ou

Ethics of the Sustainable Food Movement

Introduction The sustainable food movement embodies a fundamental challenge to the American way of life. It forces Americans to examine their lifestyle and the consequences it has on the environment, on animal life, and even on their own health. Although the sustainable food movement certainly has valid critiques of our current system of food production, it has not provided a feasible alternative to the current system that accounts for basic economic realities such as the world's growing population. The organic food movement in particular overlooks the many benefits of the current system of food production, which allows us to produce far more food on less land than pre-industrial agriculture. Its proposal that the nation switch to a local produce model is neither necessary nor economically feasible for the United States. Thesis: From a utilitarian perspective, it would harm the interests of a large majority of society, who do not live next to small farms producing the foods that the n

Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been? by Joyce Carol Oates

False perceptions and stark realities are seen in Joyce Carol Oates' short story, "Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?" The major theme in the story is the consistent conflict between fantasy and reality. The main character, Connie, tries hard to create an adult persona using her attitude and appearance to attract boys, yet she is oblivious to the reality of the society in which she lives. Connie is living in a fantasy world, but when the antagonist traps her, Arnold Friend, she is thrown into a scary reality. Symbols throughout the story play a major role in the theme. Oates uses symbols to ultimately reflect the fantasy versus reality conflict that is present throughout the story. Finally, Connie crosses the line from her comforting fantasy into a terrifying reality. Oates illustrates Connie as a fifteen-year old girl who is trying to find herself as a woman. Connie is constantly concerned with the way she looks and has a habit of "craning her neck to glance into mirrors or che

Doing Ethics Technique by Simpson, Nevile and Burmeister

The DET technique has been used on a newspaper article by Booth (2014). This article can be view at the following link http://www.theguardian.com/technology/2014/jun/29/facebook-users-emotions-news-feeds. What's going on? What are the facts? During a period of time during 2012, Facebook and academics from Cornell and the University of California, conducted a psychology experiment on 689,000 users. This experiment was conducted without the knowledge or consent of the users involved. Critics have argued that Facebook may have breached ethical and legal guidelines by not informing its users and gaining consent. Facebook counter this claim by stating that part of the data use policy the user agree to prior to creating an account amounts to consent for this research. The tests conducted under this experiment manipula

Cannabis (Marijuana) - A Safer Alternative for Chronic Pain

Stronger medications, larger doses, and cocktails made from combinations of potentially deadly FDA approved medications (opioids), become a way of life for the person suffering from chronic pain. Prescription pain medications bring temporary relief, but eventually the sufferer of chronic pain becomes dependent immune. One would think that, with today's technology, there would be a safer alternative. Technology does not have the answer for relief from chronic pain. Nature has provided a safer alternative in an age-old herb known as cannabis, which comes from the hemp plant. In comparison, cannabis is a safer alternative for chronic pain than FDA approved opioids that are associated with addiction, dangerous side effects, and death. Derived from opium, FDA approved opioids, such as Vicodin, Percocet, Morphine, OxyContin, and Methadone work by blocking the pain receptors in the brain and has been proven to be effective for the relief of chronic pain, but relief does not come without serio
