Infectious Diseases in Brazil - A Public Health Perspective

The problem of infectious diseases is an important issue to address and discuss because, now, more than ever, people are traveling around the world in numbers never seen before, expanding international trade with food and medicinal biological products, social and environmental changes, urbanization, and deforestation combined with the rapid adaptations of microorganisms leads to the return of once eradicated communicable diseases and the emergence of new ones. With the emergence of antimicrobial resistance, treatments for many parasitic, bacterial, and viral infections have become less effective (WHO). So with travel and trade at an all-time high, an outbreak in one country does not mean the disease is confined to that country, thus making infectious disease a global public health concern. Hypothesis (TBD) will include ideas that future infectious disease programs, treatments, and responses can be modeled off of past successful programs and policies utilizing hybrid models and by colla

Smartphones and Mobile Communication Carriers

Abstract Apple's iPhone initiated the popularization of smart phones in 2007. Smart phones and similar mobile computing devices have led to an unprecedented surge in mobile data usage which is a double edged sword as it generates more revenue for carriers, however the rapidly increasing number of devices and the way they operate, most wireless networks today are heavily congested which reduces the Quality-of-Service and will have detrimental effects in the long run if not curbed swiftly. This paper examines the effects smart phones have had on wireless cellular networks, their cause and what strategies will mitigate these adverse effects. I. Introduction and Motivation In the past few years, the mobile communications industry has seen an explosive growth of mobile data [1]. This phenomenon can be attributed to the Apple iPhone which when released in 2007 ushered in the era of smart phones and other mobile computing devices. Even though smart phones did exist before the iPhone, it was

Paternalism - The Preservation of Patient Autonomy

In the case of paternalism, arguments that reject paternalism mostly appeal to the strict importance of autonomy. Autonomy is a persons ability to act according to their own reasons without external intervention, encompassing the idea that each individual is ultimately in the best position to judge what decision they should make (Vaughn 51). This paper will address Goldman's theory of paternalism in regard to deceiving a patient in order to make placebo treatments effective and the objections that follow. The Hippocratic tradition requires physicians to recognize the best course for patient's overall health and well-being (Vaughn 58). If we suppose that placebos have the potential to have dramatic beneficial effects on patients, but that they work best when the patient is not told of the treatment, we jump in to Goldman's main objection of medical paternalism. Omitting the full disclosure of a treatment to a patient undermines the patient's right to choose which treatment is in his be

Acceptance Essay - Medical School

"The choices we make dictate the life we lead"- Danny Devito, Actor/Comedian Each choice we make leads us to our final destination. I consider myself lucky to have been given the opportunity by my parents to follow my dream and be proud of who I will be. I come from a family of engineers, pharmacists, and physicians, so it did not come as a surprise to me when I decided to choose medicine as my career of choice and my personal experiences have motivated me in pursuing it. In the hopes of getting a head start in college, I took AP and Honor classes and worked hard to maintain a high GPA. I realized that in order to achieve my goal for academic achievement and excellence, I needed to enhance and strengthen my understanding of leadership skills which, up until recently, I had experienced limited exposure. I take pride in the fact that I like to challenge myself and these experiences have shaped me to be the person I am today and the kind of physician I hope to be. I have str

Every End is a New Beginning - Finding God

In the words of the great children's author, Dr. Seuss, "Everyone has issues. It's a troublesome world. All the people who are in it are troubled with troubles almost every minute." What one may deem as unimportant can be of importance and troubling to another. Troubles are values to an individual that they feel to be threatening. Issues involve a crisis and tend to be public matters. It is when some value cherished by public is felt to be threatened. In "The Promise" by C. Wright Mills, he informs the reader that public issues can be turned and seen as public troubles. He links people to their personal stresses. He introduces broader structures as a whole. Sociology plays a significant role in understanding who we are as well as who others are. Understanding sociology helps you learn to ask questions that go beyond "common sense." It helps us make sense of complicated troubles and issues. When one looks at society from a Sociological Perspective, they are

How to Write a Scientific Research Paper

Writing a high quality scientific research paper is one of the most difficult and important aspects of science. The goal of this brief tutorial is to lay out some key concepts in the process of writing a scientific paper. We will not cover methods for any one field, but rather, provide a general approach to the process. For help with specifics within your field, your best bet is to ask your advisor or other members of your lab for assistance. When am I ready to write? The simple answer here is this: when you can prove something that is novel and important. You must have sufficient data to tell a story that reveals something new about nature that is also important. Obviously, you must have a thorough knowledge of the available literature to gauge your results. Additionally, it is essential that you are able to repeat your experiments and achieve the same results. Finally, your advisor will usually give you a "thumbs up" to write when the time is right. Ok, so I have a stor

The Effects of Domestic Child Abuse

While some children go home to loving parents, others must deal with families who are violent, neglectful or abusive. Domestic abuse is the harsh reality of many kids' lives. Other than the obvious physical part of abuse, there is a lot more damage that comes from it. Abused children often have a constant reminder of their suffering even as adults. These children are different from the peers they have that have not experience Abused children are noticeably different from others who have not experienced abuse. Even after the abuse is over, it is not really over. These children have to overcome various obstacles in life that the average child does not. The greatest challenges children who are abused face as adults include, social difficulties, complications in adolescence, and aggression. Social difficulties are a very common problem in children who have experienced abuse. Children whose parents physically punish them can become antisocial, fearful, or more defiant (Mom). This is due to

The Use of Melodrama in Brokeback Mountain

The use of melodrama is commonly used in the Western movie genre to enhance the emotional plot and illustrate contrasts between the strong, impassive male lead characters in their harsh environment and the emotional vulnerability of the leading lady. The love stories that are typically embedded within traditional Western genre films are that of seemingly impossible circumstance - some kind of conflict preventing the two from being together, the leading male displaying his heroic qualities at the end by "rescuing" the comparatively weak female lead and all odds are overcome as the two characters ride off into the sunset. As viewers, we have come to expect these types of romantic plot lines from the Western genre. Ang Lee's "Brokeback Mountain" challenges the archetypal 'Western romance' as the melodramatic approach, plot structure and the emotional journey of the characters in many ways reflect that of a typical Western film, however the contrast between masculine and feminine that we expect to see in the main characters is non-existent. This excerpt is a pivotal scene in the film as we are forced

My Experience in Swaziland, South Africa

Over the past few years, I have been blessed with the opportunity to travel to Swaziland, South Africa. This experience dramatically changed my view on the world and the different cultures that exist. These cultures influence how our societies think, act, and speak differently. The cultural universals in Swaziland drastically differ from those of America. Because of the constant heat year round, most everyone, no matter male or female, has a shaved head in order to stay cool. The normal attire in Swazi is long sleeves and long pants to protect their skin from the sun. Women are expected to dress extremely modest, always wearing a skirt or dress. Two of the activities that are big in Africa are singing and dancing. As soon as children start school, they are taught different praise songs and dances, much like Vacation Bible School. They also spend a lot of their free time playing soccer, or football. Since most of Swaziland is pov

What Happened to Common Courtesy?

When I was a young girl, I had an autograph book.  I have no idea whose signatures were in it or what happened to it, but I do remember what my mother had inscribed on the inside cover: "Throughout life, always remember what Thumper's daddy said – if you can't say something nice, don't say nothin' at all." Those words have always been one of the guiding principles of my life.  Sometimes it is difficult – for example, if someone says something particularly vile or stupid, it's awfully tempting to respond in kind, or point out the obvious flaws in their thinking.  Generally this turns out not to be such a good idea, because one thing leads to another and the next thing you know, you've gotten into a full blown argument with them (usually over something irrelevant or unimportant in the larger scheme of things) and you're both saying all kinds of things that aren't very nice (and no one's backing down). Better to have kept your mouth shut in the first place (or simply said

The British Industrial Revolution

The Industrial Revolution marked a very important time in history. During this time, several important changes were made. Life for people during this time was turned upside down as they were forced to adapt to their new lifestyles brought about by industrialization. The introduction of factories meant a dramatic change in work for the workers during the Industrial Revolution. Prior to factories, most workers were farmers on small-scale farms. With the introduction of factories, however, these farmers were forced to switch occupations. Instead of doing what they had been for several years, they were forced to work in a new environment under extremely different conditions than what they were used to. The workers no longer had control of their lives. Instead, factory managers imposed strict discipline upon the workers. Prior to the introduction of factories, farmers enjoyed leisure time. Durin

Anne Bradstreet and the Invisible Puritan Women

Anne Bradstreet was the first published female poet. But in the time of Puritanism and strict moral codes, the progressive woman was looked down upon. The role of a woman was to cook, clean, milk the cows, and manage the household in the event of the absence of the man. But there were women like Anne Bradstreet, Mary White Rowlandson, and Sarah Kemble Knight, who broke those roles (and rules) set for them by a masculo centric and hypocritical society. These women wrote poems and books and were published. Knight, for example, wrote about her journey from Boston to New York City "quite a journey for a woman to take at that time, it was, too! Some women during this time were accustomed to their role given them by society. They embraced it. Some were dissatisfied and wished to break free of an oppressive male-dominated society. Some, like Bradstreet, were conflicted. She writes about this in her poem

The Man Who Was Almost A Man by Richard Wright

One might argue that interpreting the workers' insults as more than jests at Dave's youth overanalyzes the relationship between Dave and the others. Since when does the word "little " necessitate a Freudian reading, concerned with phallic manhood? The narration asserts this reading via sheer repetition and sexual suggestiveness in other instances. The binary images of large and small continue throughout the story. Dave rejects their insult two sentences later, rebutting that he "ain scareda them even ef they are bigger me!"" (2067). He knows that, in more ways than one, the workers dwarf him. He resolves to compensate for his lack with a gain. When Dave first entered the workforce and became the butt of everyone's jokes, he must have wondered what could gain their respect. What could he buy that would add to his masculinity, that could use to scare his peers, much like how they attempted to scare him with their demeaning jeers? Then it must have struck him. With their long cylindrical barrels and their abili

Family Assessment Assignment

Abstract This is an assessment report of psychosocial, emotional, and physical needs of a selected family. A nurse must assess a family in order to establish their healthcare needs as an initial step in counseling. In this report, structural-functional framework was used to assess the family's needs. The assessment process entailed meeting with an unknown family conveniently and setting approximately two hours for an interview. The interview of the family entailed a reciprocated discussion and note taking that did not interfere with the process. It also aimed at acquiring valuable data about the family and identifying their strengths and weaknesses. In conclusion, the assessment targeted a list of the family's needs and referrals that would meet their unmet needs. Keywords: Family Assessment Assignment, Structural-Functional Framework Family Assessment Assignment The assessment entailed interviewing a family of a 38 year old Native American man, married to a 34 year old Arabian woman

The Basics of Heat Conversion

The term "matter" refers to any substance that occupies space and has weight. It comprises of atoms and molecules that are constantly in motion due to energy that they possess. Energy is present in all matter mostly in form of heat energy. Energy takes various forms and can change from one form to another form (Alefeld & Radermacher, 1993, p. 9). Other than heat energy, various forms of energy include electrical, light, mechanical, chemical, sound and nuclear energy. These different forms of energy can cause a substance to heat up by simply increasing the speed of the molecules in the matter. Molecules therefore, have characteristics of warmth and coldness depending on the form of energy they possess. Since the particles are constantly moving, they possess kinetic energy, which is also one of the various forms of energy. Relationship Between Heat and Kinetic Theory of Matter Kinetic theory of matter explains that, matter is in a constant random movement. Applying heat on molecules ca

DNA and Genetic Engineering

For decades scientist have divulged into the study of Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) and the biological design which makes up living organism.  Throughout the years of research on DNA and genetic materials, scientist have advanced at such an alarming rate that scientist are able to genetically engineer and modify the endogenous gene of organisms in order to modify the organism. The field of genetic engineering has drastically evolved and now scientist are able to genetically engineer our food sources such as maize, to increase the yields, make it more nutritious and to make it drought- and disease-resistant. The initial glance into this field seems promising, but scientist within the field of genetic engineering has gone a step farther and started to develop ways to clone microorganism for food consumption, grow human organs, and conduct Therapeutic cloning to guarantee the sex of children. The scientific field of genetic engineering provides solutions to many of the world's probl

The Epic of America - The American Dream

The American dream is a myth that many people idealize, which at the course of time became reality. It is a way to live your life. It's not something concrete that you can have after doing certain things or a trophy on the shelf to remind you of your glory. It's a motivator that helps you achieve your goals in life. There isn't a single definition for it, since every person makes their own, based on their culture, morals, beliefs and values. Diana Stiuliuc used a quote from James Truslow Adams' book, "The Epic of America," where he defines the American dream as: "that dream of a land in which life should be better and fuller and richer for everyone, with opportunity for each according to ability or achievement. It is not a dream of motor cars and high wages merely, but a dream of s

Personality Differences Between Men and Women

It is often observed that men, in general, behave more aggressively than women, and that women seem to be more nurturing than men. In this paper, I argue that these observed differences between men and women are wrong and that they are simply socially constructed, based on social processes and learned through gender socialization. First, I will analyze the impact of various agents of socialization, such as media, family, school and peer group, in portraying men to be more aggressive than women. Then, I will examine women's aggressive behavior. Finally, I will conclude that men and women are both have the same potential and capability in acting aggressively and violently. Since the existence of humankind, men are portrayed to be more aggressive than women. I hope this paper will offer some new perspectives to this general belief. In my view, this perception is based mostly on the observation of different social behaviors for men and women in the everyday life. I plan to argue that th

Aristotle - Happiness and Pleasure

Aristotle believes that eudaimonia is the final goal in life. He notes that pleasure is related to happiness, but it is not the highest good. He feels that pleasure is good if it is for the right reason, and not done in excess. For example excellent activity is inherently pleasurable to the virtuous person. Happiness is the central idea, and bodily and rational pleasures are a detail needed to be happy. Aristotle believes that eudaimonia is the highest good, and it is the final end. This means that there is no other end. There cannot be a means to another end; it is final. Eudaimonia is happiness. It is not a feeling of any sort. It is not a fleeting moment; it is permanent in Aristotle's view. Aristotle means that if one succeeds in leading the good life, it will be an overall good life. A man will not have lived a good life if he has recently won the lottery, or had any type of fortune bestowed upon him. If a man receives bad fortune it could impede his happiness. We cannot reason an

The Concept of Standardized Testing

Standardized tests are designed to enable us to compare the performance of students in a relatively efficient way. This is a controversial issue around the United States because some feel that the test do not show the students' performance. Is standardized testing the best way to test? Some may argue against and feel "that standardized tests allow administrators, teachers, and parents the opportunity to view solid evidence of the students' performance, which in turn could lead to curriculum changes" (Banta). I feel that standardized testing is not the best way to test because they do not prove how smart an individual is. In high school, standardized testing was the main focus in all of my classes after my first year. I came from a school where it was one of the lowest testing schools in the district. Throughout high school, some teachers were not so focused on anything but the tests. It was either you pass or you didn't. Instead of learning new things, we were too focused on preparing for the End-of-

Short Story - The Bully in Me

It was a warm day in the summer as I was sitting with my friends at the park. We were all bored with nothing to do, and were simply joking with each other while enjoying the warm sunny day. We were talking about different topics like movies we had seen, video games we've played, and different things that have happened in school. My friend, Kevin, was the first to notice a figure on a bicycle approaching from the distance. Even though he was still far off we could make out the appearance of a boy we had known from our neighborhood. His name was John and he wasn't the most popular of kids. We all knew that he was tall and skinny, not very athletic, and had a nose that was slightly larger than you would expect for his physical appearance. My friends started to joke about him, and even though he was still far away they began to make jokes about his appearance. As I was caught up in the moment, and probably due to the fact that I was seeking acceptance from my friends, I too started to make

The Functions of Our Intelligence

When intelligence is mentioned, people typically imagine books, high test scores, and Ivy league colleges. Similarly, others believe standardized test scores tell you how intelligent a person is, and your GPA is all that matters. However, intelligence is much more than being able to understand regular school subjects such as math or science. So what is intelligence? What is the exact definition of intelligence? Intelligence is not something that can be defined by one, two, three, or any certain amount of definitions. In my perspective, intelligence is in every person, those unique traits that each person uses differently. Intelligence includes creativity, common sense, and the ability to see things from a different perspective. The idea of your intelligence being decided by a standardized test is not fair. IQ quizzes do not take into account the arts, such as dance, theatre, music, etc. Even though the arts and sciences have many things in common, the key factor between them is that they both require the ability to think. Although the

Business Policies and Strategies of BP - Questions and Responses

Question What external environment (general, industry, and competitive) segments do you think BP considered or didn't consider prior to their drilling off the Gulf Coast? What should the wedding business owners now consider in their external environment? Response When the decision was made for BP to drill off the Gulf Coast the one thing that was certain to be considered was opportunity. This was brought on by the vast availability of the oil and the competition. What were not considered by the company were the environmental problems that drilling in this area would cause. The also did not consider the fact that the deep water would make it difficult for problems to be monitored and in some cases solved. The wedding business owners should now consider the threat that BP's drilling rigs left behind. Because the oil industry has a major problem with catastrophic events happening, they should consider looking into other different kinds of business opportunities to go along with their existing business model. Question How should BP have handled an external environm

Overcoming Disparities in the United States Health Care System

Abstract This paper reviews research evidence on access to health care by ethnic minority populations, and discusses what might need to be done to improve access to services. Significant racial and ethnic disparities exist in the minority population's health. These health disparities largely result from differences in socioeconomic status and insurance status. Although many disparities diminish after taking these factors into account, some remain because of health care system-level, patient-level, and provider-level factors. Health professionals are encouraged to engage in activities to help achieve this goal. In most healthcare systems, it is acknowledged that black and minority ethnic populations have until now experienced poorer health and barriers to accessing certain services. Closing the health gap for people in these population groups is now an important priority. The growth of various ethnic communities and linguistic groups, each with its own cultural traits and health profile
