English Second Language (ESL)As the United States immigration population has increased over many years, the number of immigrants who are becoming citizens is increasing as well. Our country is known for the many diverse cultures that we represent. At the core of these cultures, lie families who have been in the United States for many years, but never received assistance in learning the English language. (The Foundations of Dual Language Instruction (Fifth ed., p. 8)) There are many reasons that families do not or have not sought out assistance in learning the English language. Our country's reaction to newcomers in history is well known for being swift and often vicious, creating an anxiety in the newcomers. Considering the wide range of cultures spread through our country, we have to take into consideration that each culture has a system of standards for perceiving, believing, evaluating, and acting. Some cultures are becoming extinct and/or are valued so highly that learning another language other than the firs |

Early Childhood Education ObservationEarly childhood education focuses on children's learning through play, based on the research and philosophy of Jean Piaget. It has been thought that children learn more efficiently and gain more knowledge through play-based activities such as dramatic play, art, and social games. The theory of play stems from children's natural curiosity and imagination, allowing topic lessons to occur. Play is a vital part of development and early learning. Play influence cognitive, social, emotional development as well as self - regulation, motivation and decentration. Dramatic play is acting out interactions in cooperation with others. Children take on a make - believe role and imitate action. Dramatic play is a cooperative play. Cooperative play is when play has a goal and children often take roles and act as a group. I chose to observe a gender integrated group of children during their play time in a private kindergarten. There were twenty five year old preschoolers with one teacher and one as |

Assessment of Treatment Under US GAAP and IFRSExecutive Summary Today, the spread of globalization due to advances in technology, transport, and expansion of the global market amidst an ever-changing global financial environment, and to ensure that businesses grow and develop in the global market, it is important to ensure financial viability by carrying out effective and efficient financial reporting. This has led to increased competition between US GAAP and IFRS financial standards in providing objective financial statements to support rational decisions made by business entities. The debate between GAAP and IFRS financial standards is noticeable in accounting and measuring plant, property, and equipment in a balance sheet, and differences emerge between accounting for assets at acquisition, when in use, and at the time of disposal. The differences in accounting for plant, property, and equipment has further complicated the need for businesses to convert to IFRS financial standards as the basis of creating financial statements. |

Passing Laws to Minimize Divorce RatesLaws Should Be Enacted To Make Divorce Harder To Obtain Everyday around 2,622 couples get a divorce. Should there be laws enacted to lower that number? I'm going through a separation with my parents and I disagree with divorce except for under certain circumstances. I think laws should be put into place to make divorce harder to apply for and go through with, because a lot of divorces can be prevented, children are severely affected, and more and more couples are changing their minds after filing for divorce. William J. Doherty states "Contrary to popular belief, only a minority of divorcing couples experience high conflict and abuse during their marriage and 65 percent of divorces occur between couples who have drifted apart and low levels of conflict(called average divorces) "(1) These "average " divorces can be prevented and are unnecessary if couples have just drifted apart. There are many ways to get back together and bond again. You say "I do " under the law and nowhere does it say "when drifting apart, just divorce! " That's one reason laws should be enacted to make divorce harder to obtain. Another reason laws should be put into place to make divorce h |

Immanuel Kant on KnowledgeAccording to Immanuel Kant, we are never able to know the world in its true form, as what we 'experience', says Kant, is the noumena (the real world) along with our innate concepts or 'categories' which shapes our understanding of the world and allows us to perceive. What we finally experience, Kant calls the phenomena. According to Kant, knowledge cannot exist independent from either noumena or the innate concepts which you already have in your mind. An example of these categories being present in our minds prior to experience of the world is the category is 'causation'. We can never perceive cause from the senses. Therefore we never gained it from the senses. If you were to take an empirical route, you would conclude that causation does not exist. But that is a slight naive interpretation, grounded in stubbornness. We clearly do have an idea of causation, which means if it did not come from our senses, it must have always been there. An example of this idea of causation being present in our minds independent of experience would be if you were to record a room spinning while you were in it, and after were to record you spinni |

Japan - Geography ObstaclesJapan is an island nation in East Asia, located in the Pacific Ocean. Because of Japan's unique physical geography, it suffers from many difficulties caused naturally. Natural disasters can be caused which causes horrendous damage. Some of the factors that cause difficulties include volcanoes, earthquakes, tsunamis, typhoons and extreme weather, few resources, steep mountain relief also known as topography and inaccessibility. Japan has many active volcanoes as it is located on the plate boundaries, where subduction zones exist. It also lies along the volcanic line called the 'Ring Of Fire', which locates 75% of the world's volcanoes. Around the Ring Of Fire, the Pacific plate collides with the other nearby plates. This is also another reason why there are many volcanoes in Japan. Japan lies on the Eurasian continental plate, while the Pacific oceanic plate is moving west towards Japan. Subduction occurs when the lighter continental plate shifts and slides on top of the oceanic |

The Mysteries of AutismIn today's society diversity has become a huge factor. Classrooms all over the world contain children with different ethnicities, socioeconomic backgrounds, family life styles, and disabilities. When children with different backgrounds enter a classroom it is important for the teacher to understand the child and any disability the child may have. Knowing as much information about the child as possible dramatically helps to improve the lives of children, especially those with disabilities. Autism is a disability that is becoming more prevalent within the United States and in classrooms. It is important to know what children are being affected and how we as educators can help them best, (http://www.child-autism-parent-cafe.com/autism-students-in-inclusive-classrooms.html). First, we need to know the definition of autism and who it affects. "Autism is a neurological developmental disorder characterized by impaired social functioning, impaired communication, and restricted and repet |

The Book of Amos"Surely the Sovereign LORD does nothing without revealing His plan to His servants the prophets." Amos 3:7 Amos was an ordinary man living as a shepherd in the small town of Tekoa. He was born in Judah and prophesied in Israel. As Amos wrote, he made it clear that he did not consider himself a prophet, or came from a family of prophets, but simply a grower of sycamore figs. (Amos 7: 14-15). His simple way of life supported his teachings. He did not teach or say something that he would not do himself. His simple teachings did not match his environment. In fact, his environment was the exact opposite of simple. During this time, the people of Israel were enjoying their lavish lifestyles filled with parties and festivals. Never has Israel been this peaceful since Solomon ruled. They did not want to hear any news that was negative. People were not listening to the words of Amos. They were blinded by material goods and were distancing themselves from Yah |

Mesopotamian and Hittite MythologyThe Mesopotamian and Hittite mythology has considerable influence on Greek mythology in literary works of the epic period. The Mesopotamian and Hittite mythology were developed around 4000 years ago. According to Greek art and architecture discovered during that time, Greece absorbed significant amount of elements from Egypt and the Near East to develop its own myth, thought, literature and philosophy. There were many similarities existing between Greek and Near East mythologies. Most ancient people believed that the earth was female while the sky was male. Moreover, they also believed that the birth of gods were through ejaculation or castration of other Gods. In Greek mythology, Cronus overthrew his father Uranus by placing him in an ambush with Gaea and castrated him with a sickle. He then threw the served genitals into the ocean. Uranus' blood spilled over the earth, from which the Gigantes, Erinyes and Meliae were produced. The testicles produced a white foam in the sea from whic |

The Industrialization Revolution and American TraditionIn many ways it could be said that the great "captains of industry " who emerged in the period between the Civil War and the end of the 19th century were operating well within the American tradition. The basis of monopoly capitalism and the exploitation of the free market system had been laid long before the war, under such varied circumstances as the New England textile mills and the plantation slavery system of the Deep South. In addition, the "spoils system " which was to prove so helpful to a few corrupt lobbyists and the tycoons they represented had been an established part of Washington politics since the Jackson Administration took office in 1829, but the post-War conditions of the American economy, and especially the political situation that was the legacy of the Civil War and Reconstruction, provided unique opportunities for businessmen to form great combines corner markets, and establish monopoly franchises as part of the national wealth. Madness in The Yellow Wallpaper"Madness: The True Sanity in ˜The Yellow Wallpaper' " Ellie McGuire 4/11/14 "The Yellow Wallpaper " by Charlotte Perkins Gilman is a story depicting a woman's dissent into madness. Gilman recounts the experiences of a woman who is suffering from postpartum depression while being treated with the same methods prescribed by famous 19th century physician, S. Weir Mitchell. Gilman conveys her concerns over these methods by following the consequences Mitchell's "rest cure " has on the female narrator. The narrator complies with the orders of her physician-husband John who maintains that the only way to overcome her illness is with complete rest and the suspension of her work as a writer, like Mitchell's methods suggest. Annette Kolodny, a feminist literary critic and current professor at the University of Arizona, explains being "isolated from conversational exchanges " combined with "prohibited free access to pen and paper" causes "the [narrator] of ˜The Yellow W |

Disney and the MuppetsZero to Hero: Disney and The Muppets As children there are a few companies that impact us for the rest of our lives and you would be hard pressed to find a person who didn't grow up with Disney or the Muppets (The Jim Henson Company) having that sort of life-altering impact. What do they have in common? They both exemplified an eternal optimism for the future, and that no dream is too big, shown by quotes such as "If your heart is in your dreams, no request is too extreme " said by Jiminy Cricket, the legendary Disney character; and "Just because you haven't found your talent yet, doesn't mean you don't have one " said by Kermit the Frog, the star of the Muppets. These mantras were prevalent in many of Walt Disney's works, the founder and creator of Disney, and Jim Henson, the creator of the Muppets, and Sesame Street. However these mantras are also common of innovator's in general whether it be Steve Jobs, Bill Gates, Larry Page, or Richard Branson, to name a few. Mantras commonplace |

Benvolio and Tybalt in Romeo and Juliet.Benvolio is a symbol of peace while Tybalt is a symbol of violence and hatred. Benvolio sounds as if it was taken from the word "benevolent" which means expressing goodwill. Similarly, Benvolio is a peacemaker and expresses goodwill by always trying to avoid conflicts by suggesting settling their fray through discussions and negotiations as seen in act 3 scene 1 when Tybalt confronted Mercutio. Additionally, when Benvolio no longer appears in the play after act 3 scene 1, the storyline becomes more chaotic. In comparison, Tybalt is overwhelmed with hatred and passion. He deals with conflicts with fights unlike Benvolio. When he sees a Montague he will immediately draw his sword, attempting to challenge them. In act 1 scene 1, the repetition of "hate" in Tybalt's line "What, drawn and talk of peace? I |

Interrogations and Torture in the 21st CenturyA young Canadian citizen was on his way home after a vacation in the Middle East. He has a layover in New York and while there is taken into custody by US agents in plain clothes. He is questioned for days on his purported terrorist affiliations, all of which he vehemently denies. He is then cuffed, thrown on a plane and sent to Amman, Jordan where he is met by more agents and beaten repeatedly with two inch thick electrical cables (Jane Mayer, "Outsourcing Torture"). The individual was then driven into Syria and kept in a shallow, windowless, underground jail cell. During his time in Syria, he was beaten repeatedly and eventually succumbed to the pressure and confessed to anything his interrogators accused him of to make the pain stop. The interrogators likely felt justified in their actions because he eventually confessed making the ends justify the means. Ironically enough, Mayer states that the individual was released a year after his capture and no charges were filed ag |

Icelandic MythologyIcelandic mythology has always been a prominent part of our modern day society; whether it is in books, movies, or modern day terminology. Why is this? It is because the characters in Norse mythology are relatable to us as humans. Take the character Thor. He is an overeating, drunk Neanderthal who, although he has a good heart, also has an extremely fiery temper and likes to swing around his giant hammer with a "shoot now ask questions later" attitude. Yet even with these flaws, he still is respected and in Icelandic mythology is considered a god. In order to understand what it is that makes Thor, as well as Icelandic mythology in general so appealing, a little background is needed as well as specific perspective. First of all, you need to approach Icelandic mythology with an open mind in order to appreciate it and what exactly it has to do with our culture today even though it has existed for centuries. Second, it's important to understand that the struggles of the charact |

Innovations in the Automobile IndustryDue to the high bonding of resources, there is an important need for an innovative strength for the automotive industry. In contrast to the relatively short innovation cycles of most consumer goods a failed automobile development project can therefore weaken a brand substantially. The product life cycle of a model on the volume market is approximately six to eight years. In recent years some manufacturers managed to shorten the life cycle even up to five years. These developments led to an increased pressure to innovate in the automotive industry. In addition to the development of a new generation of models, the extent of the renovation, however, by facelifts, or model upgrade can be reduced significantly. All three versions have in common that they all are based on the Innovation process. The most significant difference to inventions was from my understanding that innovations are supposed to first, enter a market and secondly, to prevail there sustainably. From a marketing perspective, both an extension |

The English and the IroquoisIn 1744, representatives from Maryland, Virginia, Pennsylvania and the Six Nation Iroquois gathered together in Lancaster Pennsylvania in order to strengthen positive and beneficial relations embodied by the Covenant Chain of treaties amongst the English and the Iroquois. The end result of this council satisfied both parties, however, the objectives and interpretations of the two cultures reflected a deeper misunderstanding and disconnect that plagued their relationship from the beginning. Iroquois chief Gachadodow recognized the disparity of roots and routines between the English and the Iroquois while attempting to rectify a miscommunication with Virginia, inadvertently highlighting the reasons the two could never recondition their relationship. If, as Gachadodow says, the two were never from the same source to start, how should they expect to ever be bound together? At the Treaty of Lancaster the English and the Iroquois were unable to transcend the gulf between them because the Eng |

Literature and the Plight of HumanityRegionalism author Kate Chopin and Victorian poet Robert Browning have masterfully created literature classics depicting the plight of humanity. Chopin's short story Story of an Hour and Browning's epic poem My Last Duchess have effectively presented the reader with women within their oppressive society; however, the authors present unique techniques to convey societal oppression as influenced by their literary genres. Chopin and Browning convey the plight of humanity through their characters by masterfully utilizing diction to create implied oppression and loss of identity. Chopin and Browning's works discuss the topic of marriage; moreover, marriage squanders identity. Since Chopin introduces Louise Mallard as "Mrs. Mallard, " Chopin emphasizes her loss of identity of identity due to her marriage. A passive voice utilized in the beginning paragraph avoids the subject altogether; Chopin later describes Louise as "young with a fair, calm face, whose lines bespoke repression and even a |

Biography of Malala YousafzaiMalala Yousafzai was born on July 12, 1997 in Mingora, Pakistan and has two younger brothers. Her father is a leading education activist, like herself. As the Taliban started to gain more power and control in Pakistan, especially the region Malala lived in, Malala in 2009, by suggestion by her father, wrote to BBC (a British news network) expressing her views on education and life under the threat of the Taliban. As a few years progressed, the Taliban's military control on her region intensified greatly. Malala could hear the artillery firing from her house. Soon followed the repressive rules the Taliban enforced on the Pakistanis; they banned television, music, and banned women from going shopping and also severely limited women's education (educationenvoy.org). Malala and her father began to get fearful of the Taliban attacking them, due to Malala's outspoken criticism of the Taliban. Her father wanted to move her out of the region they lived in, and into a boarding school, but she refused. She refused to let the Taliban control her life. Due to fear of his daughter's safety, her father suggested that t |

Essay on Being Liberally EducatedAs a student attending a liberal arts university, I am constantly aware of what it means to be a liberally educated person. There are numerous opinions on the topic of liberal arts education, yet historian William Cronon voiced his thoughts on today's liberal education. Cronon's essay proves there is more to being a student than being graded on equations we need to memorize. Some individuals do not seem to succeed in those particular subjects that require more memorization. According to Cronon, a liberal education is about gaining the power and wisdom, the generosity, and the freedom to connect. Although I agree with Cronon, being liberally educated also means practicing humility, tolerance, self-criticism, writing effectively, and learning to nurture the people around us. Humility is defined as "a modest or low view of one's own importance. " When talking about humility as a whole, we generally talk about developing an honest and accurate view of our importance in the universe. With humility, our self-esteem is not attached to our personality, physical appearance, wealth, possessions or our past. Instea |

The Myth and Legend of La LloronaThe legendary myth of La Llorona roots into Aztec mythology and dates back to the time of the Spanish Conquest of Mexico.(Mexican Folklore: Legend of La Llorona) There are many different variations of this story but the one I am discussing today is one of a gorgeous young girl who believes she is the most beautiful in the world. Her name is Maria and because of her beauty she thinks that she is better than everybody else in her village. Maria doesn't even look at the men in her village because she doesn't think they are worthy of her beautifulness. On top of that, Maria goes on to say that she will marry the most handsome man in the world. Maria soon finds what she considers to be the most handsome man. The man she has found was said to be a dashing young ranchero and the son of a wealthy farmer from outside of her village. This young ranchero was also described as talented because of his ability to play the guitar and sing. Maria then, after deciding this was the man for her, devised |

Female Relationships and Rivalry in LiteratureThroughout the ages, literature has revolved around the personal relationships between people. The relationships between women have evolved throughout the ages possibly as a result of the transformations of society as these texts explore; The Shakespearean era where only men were allowed to act, the Victorian era in which everything must be prim and proper and women should still do their work as a mother and wife to the Post Modern era in which women are free to express themselves in the same way that men are. All three chosen texts explore these relationships differently; Jane Eyre's close friendship with Helen, Jeanette's amorous tryst with Melanie and the apparent hatred between Tamora and Lavinia. In order to fully understand these relationships we must reach beyond the words and into the mind of the writer. Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit deals with the relationship breakdown between mother and daughter. Written by Jeanette Winterson in 1985, Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit is a |

The Hybridization of Musical and Horror FilmsAll horror movies employ music to set the mood, create suspense, or even trick the audience into thinking someone is about to get killed. The hybridization of horror and musical, however, is very rare. Two horror-musical films that have achieved great success are Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (2007) and Little Shop of Horrors (1986). The success of each of these films is less a result of their obvious differences, and is more a result of their many similarities. Most notable is the transformation each film made from early, non-musical films to long-running stage musicals to very profitable film horror musicals. "[T]he tale of Sweeney Todd has changed in remarkable ways from its original stage appearance in George Dibdin-Pitt's 1847 drama. Analyzing Antigone - The Tragic HeroTragic Hero Aristotle identifies the tragic hero as a character who falls from a lofty position because of a tragic flaw (hamartia)--normally that flaw is pride (hubris). Identify the tragic hero from Antigone. Analyze the scenes in which the character displays pride and identify the effects that this pride has on the character's life. How could his/her life have been different if he/she had behaved in a less prideful manner?
