How We See Ourselves and OthersHas there ever been that moment where you feel different because of your race? I'm sure there has been a time when you look at someone through the eyes of race and culture. Suddenly, a person's race matters more than who they are and what their personality is like. Letting your race define you or someone else isn't a good thing. In these three short stories, "Red-Headed Baby" by Langston Hughes, "The Man Who Was Almost A Man" by Richard Wright, and "Battle Royal" by Ralph Ellison, race affects how the main character sees himself and how others see him. In the short story, "Red-Headed Baby," a white man is treated better than other people. He is the main character, Mr. Clarence, and he's come from his job on a boat to visit a woman he knows. Because he is white, Mr. Clarence sees himself as having a higher power than others and being better than them, especially African Americans. In the beginning of the story when he walks into the girls house, |

Canada and the War on ISISThe Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS, also called ISIL) is a terrorist group defined by the United Nations Security Counsel. ISIS has a long history of existence and deep roots in the Iraq and Syria areas that can be traced back to as early as 2004. After the US troops completed their mission of taking down Saddam Hussein who was the dictator in 2003, Iraq was soon soaked in chaotic civil wars between the Sunni and Shia branch of Islam, which are the minority and majority of the Iraq population, respectively. Since then, Iraqi has been segregated by religions. This is also the time that terrorist groups such as Al Qaeda and ISIS began terrorizing the region (YouTube and CNN.com). Therefore Canada should be actively involved in combating or air striking ISIS to maintain world peace. ISIS and Al Qaeda have a deep connection since they first began as one organization as the Al Qaeda in Iraq in 2004 (Thompson, Greene and Torre). Not only are both organizations defined as terrorist |

Biography of George BraqueGeorge Braque was born in France on May 13, 1882. While growing up in France, Braque decided that he wanted to follow his father's path in becoming a painter. For about two years, Braque studied painting at the cole des Beaux-Arts, were he succeeded in artistic painting. He decided his best choice for his future in order to become a successful painter was for him to move to Paris, where he had studied under a master decorator to receive his craftsman certificate. As Braque became more focused on painting, he decided he wanted to try something different and make art more interesting. When the two young artist Pablo Picasso and George Braque had visited the exhibition of Paul Cezanne, it had inspired them to a great extent in their development to cubist style. Since Czanne thought that art shouldn't imitate nature, but instead it should be reduced to simple geometrical based forms. Czanne had believed that art could be better by limiting color pallet such as browns, greens and gray. He had also believed the lack of clarified line sources and |

History of Early Childhood EducationThe development of the minds of young children around the world has undergone a dramatic evolution over time. Beginning with Aesop in the 6th century BCE, and including the influence of great thinkers like Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle, the education of young children has become a benchmark for the overall effectiveness of society (Morgan, 1999). The prodigious minds of John Amos Comenius, John Locke, Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Friedrich Froebel, and Johann Heinrich Pestalozzi contributed pioneering developments in early childhood education practice throughout the enlightenment (Elkind, 2010; Morgan, 1999). These men set the philosophical foundations and curriculums of early childhood education (Morgan, 1999). At the turn of the 20th century, Maria Montessori traveled the US in to tout her teaching techniques (Morgan, 1999). Deriving from the theories of John Dewey and John Piaget, Montessori program schools encourage children to have "freedom of experience" (Elkind, 2010; Morgan, 1999, p |

The Fresh Prince's TaleLong ago, but somehow still in the distant future, a mighty king had an empire that stretched farther than the known universe. His kingdom was called Llippahdieh and he ruled for many decades. He was growing old and he was getting close to death. He did not know which of children to give control of his empire to, given that he had thirty of them. He had to devise a plan to pick the best of his children for the job. After much deliberation with his council he chose to have them fight to the death in an arena. This would be no ordinary fight, because the fighting would not go on continuously. The fighting would start at 6:00 am and would go until an individual or group found a special flag, every day until one child remained. Each day would have a new challenge in the arena. The kings children were each given a number based on age. 1 went to the oldest of the children, Orion, and 30 went to the youngest of the children, Delta. The week before the fighting started they were allowed to tra |

Literary Review - 1984 by George OrwellGeorge Orwell's 1984 follows protagonist, Winston Smith, as he struggles to survive under a totalitarian government by outwardly conforming to mask his inner desire to rebel. As the majority of the citizens believe and obey the Party's commands and adulate Big Brother, Winston risks his existence and beliefs as he lives a double life working at the Ministry of Truth and secretly harboring mutinous thoughts towards the Party. He lives his life knowing that "if [he] wants to keep a secret, [he] must also hide it from [himself]" to avoid the Thought Police vaporizing him (Orwell 250). My Life StoryDo Not Be Embarrassed By Who You Are Everyone has his own story and description about herself. Anyone can fake the things she shares to others about herself to be not seen on her worst but on her best. WorldCom - Growth Through AcquisitionsThe accounting fraud at Worldcom was perpetrated by a number of high ranking executives, many of whom were in charge of accounting. At the forefront of the fraud was chief executive officer and founder Bernard Ebbers, in addition to allegedly instructing others to make the financial situation look better then it was, he also borrowed almost $400 million from the company to pay the margin call on his stock. Another key figure was Scott Sullivan, the company's chief financial officer, who spear headed the accounting manipulations. Sullivan also instructed key accounting staff, including the controller to follow along with his procedures. By June of 2002, Worldcom could no longer cover up the massive manipulations to their financial reports, their unethical and improper accounting practices had left the world's second largest telecommunication company in ruins. The trading of Worldcom stock stopped trading in late June at an all time low. The news from the Worldcom scandal was so far rea |

Lions - On the Bridge of ExtinctionLions are a significant part of the animal population in Africa, it is rare not to mention them when referring to the wildlife that exists in the African continent. They mainly inhabit the open savanna, woodland and grassland regions. They now only exist in the "southern, eastern, central and sub-Saharan regions of Africa"(Murphy 70). The IFAW reports that the numbers of the African lion are declining, making them present in only a few countries. Estimates show that currently, the lion population is less than 40,000 yet, less than one hundred years ago, there would have been approximately 200,000 (www.ifaw.org). The born free USA Organization shares a similar point of view by noting that, during the past 22 years, the population of the African lion (Panthera Leo) has declined by 48.5% and its range has been reduced to a mere 22%. In addition, though the African lion is present in 27 nations, it is very few in numbers and in isolation, which reduces its viability (www.bornfr |

Innocence and Justice - To Kill A Mocking BirdInnocence and justice can be lost fairly easily when you have been through what the Finch kids have been through. In To Kill A Mockingbird, the narrator, Jean Louis Finch talks about the connections between mockingbirds and the characters in the novel and how they demonstrate a loss of innocence and justice. A mockingbird was a huge symbol of innocence throughout the novel. Jean Louise and her brother, Jem, had to grow up and lose their childhood innocence to cope with all of the recognition that they unwillingly receive. There is a connection between mockingbirds and the characters in the novel, To Kill A Mockingbird. Jean Louise, or commonly known as Scout is an innocent eight or nine year old girl that is exposed to the reality of her town, Maycomb County at a very young age. After one day at school Scout asks her brother a very innocent question. She says, "Jem, how can you hate Hitler so bad and be ugly about folks at home" (pg. 249-250). Scout doesn't realize the prejudice community that she lives in. She is oblivious to the treatment that colored people receive in Maycomb County. Innocence is expre |

Indonesia's Economic DeclineHow did Indonesia go from a production powerhouse, with economic capabilities equal with Japan and China, to the dilapidated, corrupt, overpopulated debt hole that it is now? Indonesia was on the rise in the mid 1960's. From 1966 to 1969, inflation lowered from 660% to 19%. In 1982, foreign investments were high, as were expectations (14). Indonesia was streamlining its budget by 1982, spending the newly saved money on education (25). But the decline was beginning by 1983, when Indonesia was forced to suspend projects totaling 26 billion, as well as freezing government wages (39, 40, 42). Currently, Indonesia is a developing country, full of corruption and poverty. What happened in the middle to bring down such a high economic trajectory? Indonesia's abrupt economic decline was due to their failure of government leadership. A major contributor to the economic decline of Indonesia were the excessive government subsidies that the government placed on valuable resources. In 81', only 15% |

Rags to Riches - Andrew CarnegieAs many of our fellow Americans have been in unfortunate financial trouble, there are also the few who remain at the top. Corporate employers remain at the top and seem to getting increasingly wealthier, their employees and farmers seem to be increasing their debt and not getting any gains from their hard work. As these problem rise there was a meeting held where all these Americans who play a role in society came together and shared their concerns and their solutions to the problems we are facing today in the 1890's. The first to speak was Andrew Carnegie the king of steel. He decided to give advice to the farmers and employees of factories. He stated that every person had the power to gain riches by working hard. But as that was said the farmers retaliated. The farmers described how they worked and worked and worked but no gains were made due to the fact that in order for them to have farms and work the land they had to take out loans. Which now if they made profits from their produc |

Case Study - The Oscar Meyer CompanyDefining the Problem The basic problem with this division of Kraft Foods was that the president of division Marcus McGraw had a vision of growth,(+4% in volume and +15% on operating income),that had become difficult due to the change in the needs of the customers they catered to. The change in needs was responsible for the decrease in sales of their traditional red meat and increase in sales of white meat which was low in fat content. The losses that have been offset by acquiring Louis Rich were beginning to surface again due to increase in competition. The competitors in the red meat have decreased their price which has led to the decrease in sales of Oscar Mayer products. The customers were shifting to healthier products. Analyzing the Solutions Alternative 1: This proposed solution was given by Rob Goodman of the Louis rich division. He suggested concentrating on the white meat division which was invariably under Louis Rich. The solution was to increase the awareness about the whit |

A Frightening Experience - My Heart SurgeryA frightening experience I had in my life was when I had heart surgery. I remember when the doctor first informed me that I had to actually have the surgery, I mean I knew that one day I would actually need it but the shock of it actually happening just a few months from now really frightened me at first. The days went by quicker than you'd think and before I knew it, the time came to go to Minnesota. The night before the big day my Mama, Daddy, Stepfather, And Papaw all went to eat at a nice restaurant and had a very good time. The morning of surgery, I had to take a shower with a special wash and while in the shower it hit me that the day actually was here. Surprisingly, I wasn't nervous. We took a taxi to the hospital and made our way upstairs to sign in. Shortly after signing in the nurse called us back and I started preparing by changing into my gown and the nurse gave me a cute ladybug doctors cap which made me feel a little more co |

Proletarians and CommunistsIn the second section of Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels' Communist Manifesto, appropriately titled "Proletarians and Communists," the authors craft a series of hypothetical criticisms, in which those that are opposed to the ideas of communism point out various flaws in its structure. Some of these criticisms include the abolition of private property, class culture and families, among other things. Although these criticisms are strictly rhetorical, the main purpose of the criticisms is to get rid of any doubts in the proletarian minds concerning communism, so that they will be properly informed and will not have any hesitation in rising up to fulfill the overthrow of the ruling bourgeoisie class. Among the various parts of communist doctrine that are brought into question, one of the biggest beliefs being criticized is the abolition of countries and nationality. Many people were opposed to the idea of abolishing their country's identity, because of their nationalistic and chau |

Breast Cancer Research PaperCancer is word that resonates through individuals worldwide. Currently, there is no cure for cancer, but only preventative measures that can be taken before and after diagnosis. In 2013, Angelina Jolie underwent a double mastectomy after finding out she had a high risk of breast cancer. Her decision opened up many doors for questions and concerns. This research paper will mainly focus on the causes of breast cancer, and BRCA genetic testing. Proto-oncogenes are genes that when mutated cause normal cells to turn cancerous. Mutations cause the proto-oncogene to increase the level of expression or activity it experiences. The mutated form of a proto-oncogene is called an oncogene. Normally, proto-oncogenes give coding to proteins that encourage cell division, stop cell differentiation, and put an end to cell death. These processes are extremely important for human development and maintenance of organs and tissues. When they mutate and transform into an oncogenes, they overload protein |

College and Professional DevelopmentEveryone, at some point in life, has felt stressed or frustrated about something; sometimes we feel overwhelmed, as if we can't take it anymore. Yes, it is difficult to believe, but there are actually a million other things to do that can help you figure it all out and feel much better. There are people that keep a personal journal, others talk to their friends or family members, but there's also people that take their time and meditate. And no, it's not just a religious practice done in India; it's a method of relaxation that can be done by anyone and everyone, if they wish to do so. Even though sometimes life seems to be too difficult, and we just want to give up on everything, we should keep in mind our life goals, which act as motivation for us to keep going. It doesn't matter how hard the situation gets, there's always something that seems to be our little light at the end of the tunnel. Is there any relation between meditating |

Computer-Assisted Language Learning (CALL)Computer-Assisted Language Learning (CALL) has become an ever expanding. CALL was created to help people learn different languages with the use of computers. It came about in the 1960's before much was known about how we learn different languages. I think this seemed like a good idea at the time, but the creator just did not have enough data on how humans learn new languages. Now fifty years later different methods and practices of it have helped more people to better understand languages that are new to them. When CALL was first created it used a method that like I said seemed a good idea, but did not help people grasp languages that were new to them. The method that was used was more of a read and repeat method. We now know that while this method may have aided in language learning, it did not contribute to language acquisition. The Merriam Webster dictionary defines acquisition as "the act of getting or acquiring something: such as the act or process of gaining skill, knowledge, etc". This means that you can read and repeat all you want, but you are not gaining the skill or full knowledge of this new language. When learning a new language we also need unde |

Sebastian Faulks and the Horrors of War'Birdsong' by Sebastian Faulks is a story of love and war. Faulks expresses the horrors of war that the soldiers have to contend with frequently throughout the novel in several ways. Faulks presents the horrors of war through the lives of the soldiers and their experiences whilst fighting on the western front. The horrors themselves were something that the soldiers had to cope with whilst keeping focus on fighting the opposition, different characters responded to these horrors in a number of ways. Some soldiers found it difficult psychologically to comprehend with some of the horrors faced, in cases the deaths of close comrades, whilst other characters who had more experience at war, used these horrors to motivate themselves to kill more Germans. The battle of the Somme was the most devastating battle of the war, and throughout its part in the novel, Faulks presents the horrors of war through the gruesome experiences the soldiers had to deal with in the trenches - something |

65 and Older - License Renewal ProgramWhen you think of the dangers of driving, the first thought that would run through someone's mind would probably be drunk driving or texting and driving. They are a huge cause for many automobile accidents every year. However, they are not the only dangers you may encounter on your day to day travels. In April 2010, I witnessed a terrible automobile accident in which one driver lost their life. The wreck was caused by an elderly driver who failed to stop at a stop light intersection. Unfortunately, elderly drivers account for 11 percent of automobile accidents every year. Every day we encounter elderly drivers whom fail to signal when turning, seem to ignore stop signs or stop lights, or fall asleep while driving due to medication or natural causes. While not only are these drivers a large threat to themselves but also anyone who shares the roadways with them. That includes everyone from the children on the school bus to the lady next door. I will agree that not every elderly driver is |

Organizational BehaviorIn today's society organizational functions are used by businesses in order to perform and provide services to meet their consumers " needs. The Dangers of Distracted DrivingCurrently, there are around 326,400,000 citizens that use a mobile device (CTIA). Statistics show that more than 100,000,000 use a cell phone while driving (Cell Phone), and around 1,600,000 car crashes involve drivers using cell phones and texting (Marino). You might say that you are a good driver and have no problem using your mobile device or cranking up your radio while driving, but distracted driving is dangerous. And in my opinion, it is a foolish act and should be eradicated. Texting while driving is common in the United States. It is almost uncommon to not spot at least one person who is texting on their phone while driving. Some of the dangers of texting while driving can involve, and certainly are not limited to, not seeing the cars in front of you braking, which results in a collision with you and the stopped cars; blowing red lights, which results in a ticket and/or a treacherous accident; and loss of concentration of the road, which could result with you riding off the road or out of your lane into a ditch, another car, road sign, pedestrian, or any of the previous results. As stated by Mike Davis, in his article called, "Sand, Fear, and Money in Dubai " he says, "Dubai is a prototype of the new post-global city, which creates appetites rather than solves problems. Medical Summary of Kidney StonesKidney stone is a fairly common condition that affects the kidney. There is a solid piece that forms in the kidney hence the name. So, kidney stones can be defined as a medical condition where a solid piece of material forms in the kidney resulting from constituents of the urine (National Library of medicine).Another name for kidney stones is nephrolithiasis. The size of this solid may vary, it may be substantial or just a small grain sized particulate matter. It is important to understand that most of the urine elements that amount to kidney stones pass out in the discharge, but failure to do so causes the conglomeration or in other terms crystallization when these elements become concentrated in the tubules of the kidney. It results in the urinary having some form of blockage. Sometimes however, a stone will not go away. It may get stuck in the urinary tract, block the flow of urine and cause pain, this is what essentially leads to kidney stones. The causes of kidney stones is majo |

Texas Affordable Care ActThe health care reform debate between 2008 and 2010 led to the passage of Patient Protection and Affordable Act, was reminiscent of opportunities for reform that have occurred on a cyclical basis throughout American history. These opportunities occurred most notably in the presidential administrations of Franklin Roosevelt, Harry S. Truman, John F. Kennedy, Lyndon B. Johnson, Richard Nixon, and William J. Clinton. (Rich, Cheung, Lurvey, 79) On March 23, 2010, President Obama signed the Affordable Care Act into law, putting in place comprehensive reforms that improve access to affordable health coverage for everyone and protect consumers from abusive insurance company practices. (Rich, Cheung, Lurvey, 81) Signed under the title of The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, the law included multiple provisions that would take effect over a matter of years, including the expansion of Medicaid eligibility, the establishment of health insurance exchanges and prohibiting health insurers |
