Basil Halward - The Picture of Dorian Gray

Question The murder of Basil Hallward was inevitable. His death results from his passionate devotion and unrequited love for Dorian. To what extent do you agree with this view? Response Basil Hallward is immediately won over by Dorian Gray and when he describes their first meeting in the first chapter he says "we were quite close, almost touching." This shows how Basil was already in love with Dorian before he even got to know him, his behavior shows that he was fascinated with Dorian and his actions shows some signs of flirting which was not approved at the time. Homosexual acts were punishable by death until 1861 and it was only legalized in the UK in 1967, Basil's death was inevitable as he exclaims in the first chapter "I have show in it the secret of my own soul." I Peter 2:11-12 - Living for God

"Beloved, I beg you as sojourners and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts which war against the soul, having your conduct honorable among the Gentiles, that when they speak against you as evildoers, they may, by your good works which they observe, glorify God in the day of visitation." 1 Peter 2:11-12 Man is fallen. That is a simple fact to anyone that observes modern society. Humans were once perfect but since the fall of man, we have become so wretched, so much different than how God originally created us. And the worst part of it is humanity has become used to this sin. But as Christians we are called to be different and abstain from the things of this world. America is consumed in an ideology of materialism, the ideology that more is better. In 2013, America spent over $650 billion in the winter holiday season. This statistic is of an unsaved majority, but although these products in themselves are not bad, the lust of these things are. And the reason behind why they buy these things, which is unknown to most except that they in a never ending struggle to fill a void in their lives. As Christians we once knew abo

Bill Gates - A Man of Magnitude

In Athol Fugard's prolific play, "Master Harold and the Boys," one of the most prominent scenes is the discussion regarding who they felt was a true "man of magnitude," which Hally defines as somebody who has "benefited all of mankind." While the number of people that someone affects is arbitrary, people of great significance tend to have an impact on more than just one. Magnitude may be more accurately measured by the impact which they leave and whether it was in a deep, meaningful, and unique way that remains relevant through all of time. It is for this reason that Bill Gates, the founder of Microsoft, is a true man of magnitude. Many might leap to the conclusion that Gates will one day be recognized as the most important person of his generation because for fourteen of the fifteen years from 1995 to 2009, he was the richest person in the world. Such achievements, however, will likely see

Animals and Scientific Experimentation

Introduction Animal research refers to the use of animals in scientific experimentation and testing. Scientists have been doing it for many centuries with two main reasons. The first one is that they want to find out more about animals themselves and the second is that they want to test different substances and treatments to see if they can harm human beings. Therefore, by testing them on animals that serve as living bodies they make decisions whether or not medicines, new surgical techniques or even cosmetic products can be used on us. Only a few of them actually help scientists understand the biology of animals and diseases that afflict them. Should Animals Be Used for Research? The number of animals that suffer and die every year in chemical, food, drug, cosmetic, weapon tests, biology lessons, agricultural researches, dog and cat food trials, car-crash simulations, medical trainings and experiments, is bigger more than hundred million. Animals can be used in medical experiments b

Free Trade and Modern Slavery

Today, free trade agreements are being signed between many poor and rich countries. However, these trade agreements are proving themselves to be much more damaging than its name suggests. Currently, there are over 250 agreements, both regional and bilateral in existence, as shown by reports. (Suri, 2007) To start with, what exactly is free trade? There are misconceptions about the meaning of free trade, as many believe that free trade meant trading between countries without any costs. However, according to the Webster's Collegiate Dictionary, free trade is trade based on the unrestricted international exchange of goods with tariffs used only as a source of revenue. Basically, free trade does not mean actual free trade, but freer trade. Famed 18th century economist Adam Smiths book, An Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations, often referred to as The Wealth of Nations, Smith talks about topics such as labor and free markets. Smiths idea is the logic of many nations

Gender in Hemingway's In Our Time

Ernest Hemingway's collection of short stories In Our Time explores ideas about love, passion, and relationships. These topics reveal Hemingway's personal opinions about the complexities of such relationships. Hemingway's use of gender archetypes in the collection is a critical social commentary on society's decided importance of gender roles. In his short stories "The Doctor and the Doctor's Wife"" and "Indian Camp,"" Ernest Hemingway uses conventional gender archetypes with some unconventional features to challenge and expose flaws in traditional societal gender roles. In "The Doctor and the Doctor's Wife,"" Hemingway portrays a husband and wife. The husband is upset, so his wife questions him as to why he might be upset (Hemingway 25). At first the man ignores his wife, and then he lies to her. The wife gives her husband religious advice, asking that he not lose his temper. The husband largely ignores her advice, assuming that she, being a woman, lacks the intelligence and autho

Symbols and Imagery in The Scarlet Letter

The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne is a novel that is full of symbols and imagery. The symbols in the novel are what piece it together to create something great. Throughout the novel The Scarlet Letter, Hawthorne uses symbols such as the scarlet letter A, that represent suffrage and punishment, but, as the novel progresses it begins to unfold and become a representation of redemption and truth. Hester Prynne's scarlet letter undoubtedly represents the sin of adultery and she must wear this 'A' as a symbol of punishment. From the beginning of the novel you can see that Hester does not let the true meaning of the 'A' dictate her being. She flaunts the scarlet letter in a "haughty" manner which causes all of the townspeople to view her in a different light. The punishment that went along with Hester wearing the scarlet letter was for her to embroider it herself. When she sewed it, she did so in such an un-puritan way. The Puritan's believe in simplicity and they never wore anythi

Misfortune in Two Literary Masterpieces

It is clearly obvious that in life, some events seem to never occur the way they were planned or "suppose to happen." Benjamin Disraeli once asserted, "circumstances are beyond the control of the man, but his conduct is in his own power." Adversity affects everyone throughout their lives, but it is up to the person to make the most out of their misfortunes. This assertion is entirely valid and can be seen through the work of art "The Great Gatsby," by F. Scott Fitzgerald. Unlike The Great Gatsby, "Death of a Salesman" by Arthur Miller where the main character treats his misfortunes differently. Jay Gatsby, protagonist of F. Scott Fitzgerald's "The Great Gatsby," is a character who refuses to be destroyed his control. After losing the love of his life, Daisy, G

Good Parents May Plant Bad Seeds

In many occurrences, parents take all the blame or credit for everything that their children have become. After they see their child is not doing well, they always come up with the question, "What have we done wrong?". After reading "Accepting That Good Parents May Plant Bad Seeds" I can conclude that many parents have a similar mindset that if their child is not doing well it is because they are not doing a good job as parents. The era of blaming themselves and saying "there are no bad children, only bad parents" is gone. Many parents today, go to psychiatrists because they do not know what is wrong with their child, immediately thinking that they have some kind of illness or need the help of a specialist. In the article "Accepting That Good Parents May Plant Bad Seeds" the author Richard Friedman begins by introducing one his clients. His client doesn't know what is wrong with her child, a 17 year old boy who seems to always be mean a

Aspartame - Artificial Sweetener

Aspartame is one of the most commonly used artificial sweeteners being low in calories and approximately 200 times sweeter than sucrose. This sweetener is sold under the common known brand names of NutraSweet and Equal. It was first synthesized in 1965 by Jim Schlatter, who was a chemist at the G.D. Searle (Walters). He was working on an experiment to discover a new treatment for gastric ulcers. To test those new anti-ulcer drugs that he made, the biologist that he was working with used a tetrapeptide (four amino acids) which is produced within the stomach naturally. While synthesizing the tetrapeptide in the lab one of the steps was to make a dipeptide intermediate which was aspartyl-phenylalanine methyl ester (Walters). While Schlatter was doing his work he accidently got a small amount on his finger. He felt it was safe to taste due to the fact that the product was made of natural acids present in all proteins. When he tasted it, he saw that it was sweet and was wondering where th

The Role of Canada in the Korean Conflict

On July 25, 1950, the North Korean Peoples' army crossed the 38th parallel invading the country of South Korea, with the aid and support of the U.S.S.R. and the People's Republic of China.1 The Canadian armed forces aided in the UN effort to retake the invaded land by military force.2 Many Canadians feel that the conflict did not affect Canada at all, and thus we should not have been involved, and lost lives for it. Canada's role and actions in the Korean war were justified. This is because communist forces were committing war crimes as they invaded, communism has many negative consequences and today we know South Korea is much better off because of our actions. If the North Koreans had seized South Korea, then communism would have spread, many negative consequences would have then ensued. The communist government of North Korea had many ties to Stalin`s Russia.3 Stalin alone was responsible for 20 million deaths, with some estimates as high as 80 million4, so he would have no problem with helping to eliminate any right-wing politicians, groups or people in South Korea that opposed his, and

Canada and the Effects WWI

Canada has had many wars throughout its history. World War I had a tremendous impact on Canada and several economic, political and cultural changes occurred as a result of World War One. These changes initially affected Canada in a negative way but then became catalysts for change when the war ended. Canada emerged from World War One stronger politically and economically. Politically, Canada established its independence as a nation internally and externally. This independence was shown with the Treaty of Versailles. The battle of Vimy Ridge also brought the nation together as a whole because it showed that they did not need to rely on Britain's help. During WWI, many people in Canada had good jobs and were working in the factories providing munitions for the war. The economy improved since the war first began. Canada faced some cultural challenges during the war that they had to deal with after the war. At the beginning of World War One, Prime Minister Borden, promised that he would

The New View in Reconstruction

The article a "New View of Reconstruction" by author Eric Foner exams and debunks the traditional bias interoperation of reconstruction prior to 1960's. The author clams in the first few paragraphs that the bias interoperation of reconstruction of Abraham Lincoln having a swift plan to reinstate southern states and Andrew Johnson being painted as a tragic hero, who only motives were to carry out Lincoln's plans of a quick reconstruction, but was foiled by the so called "evil" radical republicans, was the result of southern democrats whom favor ainit-reconstruction. The legitimacy of this version of reconstruction was solidified by scholars like Claude G. Bowers author of "A Tragic Era" whom works referred free African-Americans as "simple minded." This story became synonymous as truth among white communities across the country and stal

Basil and Lord Henry in Dorian Gray

Assignment Chapter 1 tells us everything we need to know about Basil, Lord Henry and even Dorian Gray. " To what extent do you agree with this statement? Response The extract starts with "artist should create beautiful things, but should no put nothing of his own life into them" by Basil." The quote gives strong feelings and passion of what a true artists principles are. We get the idea that Basil strictly feels that the beauty of art is what we see in the surface, and not the depths that people take, such as thinking it as a "form of autobiography ". However later Basil revels "I had put too much of myself into it " and he was scared people would find out about his feelings and things would become hectic as homosexuality wasn't accepted. So he came to the conclusion that "the world shall never see my portrait of Dorian Gray". This completely contradicts what he states in the beginning about art should have nothing to do with the artist's life. It shows how Basil was so influenced by

Expository Essay - Consumerism

Consumerism can be defined by the highly demand that is emerging because of more than necessarily consumption. This concept was based on the times after World War II and it was all planned by the government and corporations to develop the economy (Leonard, 2007). To encourage people to consume more, it was said that; if we consume, our ego satisfaction will increase and it will cause us to be happier. Even some of the statesmen argued that the major bourn of people is to create more consumer goods at that time. After that, consumerism began to penetrate in our lives but is it really a bad thing? In my opinion; yes, it is really a bad thing. Although there are also some positive effects of consumerism, the negative effects of consumerism are more dominant such as the impacts on health, natural resources and economy. Firstly, consumerism has negative sides and minor positive sides in sense of human health. The negative effect of consumerism is that it is influencing the human health bad

The Cuban Missile Crisis in the Film Thirteen Days

The film Thirteen Days shows the viewer a "blockbuster"" look at the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis that challenged the Kennedy administration. It does a reasonable job of sifting through history and picking the pieces that allow the audience to understand the historical event and enjoy the movie without being overloaded with information. The character of the President's fiercely loyal aid, Kenneth O'Connell played by the actor Kevin Costner is followed throughout the film to give a more personal feel to viewer. Not a bad idea, however, Costner makes the worst attempt at an accent that I have ever heard. This, unfortunately deterred me for the remainder of the film. O'Connell's relationship with the two Kennedy's is also a key part of the film. Bruce Greenwood who plays president Kennedy does an admirable job of portraying a president who "won high praise for his grace under pressure and the way he sifted conflicting advice and made decisions (Shaller, p.196). " The interaction between all

Question To what extent did Alexander II's reforms cause more problems than they solved? Response When Alexander II came into power he was faced with a lot of problems such as serfdom and the backwardness of the economies development. Alexander set up a lot of reforms, however not all of them were successfully coping with all of the problems but instead it created new obstacles. A prime example of how Alexander II's reforms caused more problems than they solved was the Emancipation Act of February 1861. Even though the emancipation, to a certain degree, help to solve discontent of the peasants it actually made life harder for the peasants. There poverty worsened, they did not have full citizen rights, their debts increased because they couldn't afford th
