Pathophysiology Disease Project - Alcoholism

Alcoholism is a broad term for problems with alcohol, such as, compulsive and uncontrolled consumption of alcoholic beverages. It is considered to be a disease now known as alcohol dependence. Alcoholism (alcohol dependence) is when you have signs of physical addiction and continue to drink, despite problems with physical, and mental health, and social, family, or job responsibilities that control your life and relationships. It is the severe end of alcohol abuse. Alcohol abuse (severe alcohol use disorder) is when you're drinking leads to problems such as; negative work, medical, legal, educational, and social behavior, but not physical addiction. Most people are between the ages of 18 and 25 when they develop into this with symptoms relapsing and remission over time. There is no known cause of alcohol abuse or alcoholism, but there are influences that can cause you to become an alcoholic. Some influences are if you are a child of an alcoholic, a young adult under peer pressure, have

Qualitative Risk Analysis and Management

Qualitative risk analysis includes methods for prioritizing the identified risks for further risk response planning. The methods of qualitative risk analysis are applied to the list of risks created or updated by the Identify Risks process to provide project management with the characteristics of the risks that have the most influence (positive or negative) on achieving the project's objectives. (Project Management Institute, 2009). Project risks are scale-able activity and should be analyzed according to the complexity. Projects are required to utilize qualitative analysis as well as quantitative. Different risks have different level of impact and probability of occurrence. The risk management system assesses each identified risk for its probability of occurrence and its impact on project objectives. The analysis enables project teams to address the project risks and uncertainties. The project risks are rated according to their probability and impact. Risk probability is the likelihood that a risk event may happen, while r

Reading Journal - Biotechnology

Article 1: "#26: Biologist J. Craig Venter" Quote "J. Craig Venter keeps riding the cusp of each new wave in biology. When researchers started analyzing genes, he launched the Institute for Genomic Research (TIGR), decoding the genome of a bacterium for the first time in 1992. When the government announced its plan to map the human genome, he claimed he would do it first-and then he delivered results in 2001, years ahead of schedule. Armed with a deep understanding of how DNA works, Venter is now moving on to an even more extraordinary project. Starting with the stunning genetic diversity that exists in the wild, he is aiming to build custom-designed organisms that could produce clean energy, help feed the planet, and treat cancer." (Weintraub, 2010) Reaction J. Craig Venter has become an iconic figure in the biotechnology world. I find it very interesting when a person is the first to achieve a task or decipher a discovery. In this case, Venter became the f

Winning in The Hunger Games

In a game where life is at stake and a person must compete as an individual for survival is it possible to survive with no help from others? In the book The Hunger Games, by Suzanne Collins, the main character Katniss Everdeen is put to the challenge of competing against 23 other girls and boys to the death. This is not the only time Katniss has had to fend for herself, as at home she had to care for her family and keep them alive as well as herself. In this novel Katniss finds that the individual survives only when dependent on someone else for something. This theme is presented through Katniss' alliance with Rue, her relationship with Peeta during the games, her relationship with her mentor Haymitch, and her hunting partnership with Gale before the games. Survival would have been impossible for Katniss without depending on someone else, as was seen in Katniss' alliance with Rue during the games. This alliance was the difference between life and death. Katniss, who was trapped in a

Positive Reinforcement in 1984

In George Orwell's novel 1984, he addressed many key aspects of perspective and motivations that we see every day. These motivations, positive and negative, are very controversial in the aspect of how effective that they are. Winston was given many different positive and negative motivations throughout the novel but positive motivations were the most effective in Winston's story. Toward the end of Winston's journey, he was put into jail for thought crime. He was exposed to both positive and negative reinforcement but positive reinforcement was better for him. When he was being interrogated by O'Brien, He used negative reinforcement. Although this was effective, it created some instability for Winston. The whole purpose of putting him into prison was to make him more loyal to Big Brother. Winston had connected O'Brien to Big Brother and this was very bad for what O'Brien was trying to do. If O'Brien had used positive reinforcement, he would have made Winston's connection of Big Brother to

My Philosophy of Life

According to www.merriam-webster.com the definition of philosophy of life is "an overall vision of or attitude toward life and the purpose of life." At sixteen I have viewed my life and determined that family, friendships, education, humor, and creativity are my top five values. This essay will describe my reasoning behind my top five values and how they have been used in my life. Family is at the very top of my values because I agree that an overall rule for mankind is that family always comes first. From the first moment of your life you are cared for and protected for by family. My family is foremost do to the fact that after the past three years where I have been extremely sick which included going through three surgeries I had support. While through all my breakthroughs my mother, stepdad, and two siblings were always there for me right by my side. I cherish my family. A

Biography of Harriet Tubman

Harriet Tubman was born in 1822 in Dorchester County, Maryland. She was one of 9 children born to Benjamin Ross and Harriet Green. Her actual name given to her by her parents was Aramita Ross and her nickname was Minty. Harriet Tubman was born a slave. Slavery is when you are forced to work for somebody when you don't want to. Back in the 1800's, White people could own Black people as their property. Examples of property are: your toys, your TV, your furniture and your pets. People who owned slaves were called slave owners or masters. Slaves didn't really have any rights. Slave owners would whip slaves who complained. Owners could sell slaves for money at auctions. Many slaves worked on farms called plantations. In the South, slavery was legal, which means it was okay by law. In the north, slavery was illegal, which means it was against the law. At age five, Minty started working on a plantation. She had to rock the master's baby to sleep. She had to work out on the farm also. When Minty was seven, she was sold to another master and worked on h

North and South in the Civil War

The North and South in the nineteenth century were different in lifestyle and economy. The north had a booming industrial economy while in the South, cotton was king. Due to this, congress was continuously addressing controversial matters and providing answers that did not satisfy either one side or both. The early 1800s were full of the North and the South making many attempts at reuniting that just fell short. Americans sought to resolve their political disputes through compromise in the early nineteenth century, yet by 1860 this no longer seemed possible because of the many differences between the North and South. nThere were different factors that prevented the growth and compromise of states. In particular, compromise was made impossible by 1860 due to disagreement over states' rights and dispute over the morals of slavery. Senator Henry Clay presented a speech to the Senate on February 12, 1833 and stated, "I say that it is impossible that South Carolina ever desired for a moment to become a separate and independent state." Henry Clay's point of view shows that it is "impracticable" for South Carolina to nullify a federal law successfully

The Glory of William Tecumseh Sherman

William T. Sherman was a true hero of the Civil War. He was able to destroy the South's strategic, economic, and psychological ability to wage war. This was also referred to as Sherman's "scorched earth " policy. Sherman's greatest contribution to military tactics is his development of 'Total Warfare' As his army marched through the South, they destroyed any material or resource that may be useful to his opposition. He ordered fields burned, animals slaughtered, bridges blown up, and railroad beds destroyed. Sherman ordered his army to be as least destructive as possible; he defied military principles, and stopped the South from being able to wage war. Sherman never wanted for total destruction to occur. He ordered his men to the best of his ability and taught them everything he could. In Source #1 one line spoke such greatness of Sherman, "In all foraging, of wha

Concepts of Drone Warfare

Abstract Drone warfare is starting to show up all over the world. As the technology gets more and more advanced, soon no humans will serve in battle and many lives will be saved. Drones will be doing any of the necessary fighting for us. Is drone warfare more expensive then sending a pilot out in a jet? Actually no, drones are cheaper to make and run than a conventional fighter jet. As drones not only take out the harm for pilots, they also help keep ground soldiers out of harms way as well. The drones are not only used to tell whether if a group of people are moving tactically or whether it's just a group of harmless people, but can also be a deadly weapon with missiles attached. Not only will the drones decrease the lives lost in military aircrafts and ground control, but will also allow the pilot of the UAV ( unmanned aerial vehicle) be close to home and keep his or her family worry free. Only the militaries of the world should be allowed to use such technology as it will lessen th

Hollow Characters in The Great Gatsby

In F. Scott Fitzgerald's classic novel, The Great Gatsby, the hollow nature of the upper class is a major theme. One learns that the people of the upper class are wasteful of their money in order to impress others. Also, to them, money comes before love meaning it is what they value most. Further more, the upper class are unfulfilled in life as well as unhappy. Ergo, one can conclude there is a distinct shallowness among the upper class in the 1920's supported by the attitudes of the characters in the novel. The amount of money the upper class wasted to impress others contributes to the shallowness of the group. The parties, the cars, the clothing, and the alcohol, were all purchased and consumed in excess in order to be boastful of their wealth.Gatsby's parties were a prime example of this showmanship. During this time, Gatsby was living in his outrageous and gaudy mansion where he threw extravagant parties and would allow anyone to come. He showed off his home as well as let the gu

Providing GMO Foods in Public Schools

Genetically modified organisms (GMO) are the new form of farming and pose a major threat to America's health. Most Americans know what a GMO is; in a survey, 80% of 25 people were aware of what genetically modified foods are. The real problem is, they are not aware of the health effects. The lack of knowledge and regulation of GMO's in the school systems has increased risks among children and adolescents. GMO's are created when plants and animals are injected with hormones and genes from other organisms, altering the DNA structure to create a completely new form (Rings). Almost 80% of food is genetically modified. Breaking it down even further, 93% of all soybeans, 78% of all cotton, and 70% of all corn are genetically modified. All livestock that is not certified organic or non-GMO is fed with GM corn filler and passed onto consumers. The American Academy of Environmental Medicine proved GMO foods have serious health effects: infertility, immune system problems, accelerated aging, d

Symbols in Animal Farm by George Orwelll

Orwell filled Animal Farm with many different symbols that are used to give the readers a better view of the hidden meaning of the book. One symbol is the ribbons that Molly wore in her hair in the beginning of the book. In Animal Farm, Orwell used these ribbons as a symbol of the luxuries in Russia to satirize the upper class and the Communist leaders. In the beginning of the book the pigs, Snowball in particular, didn't think it was fair that the humans got to slave them around. They resented the humans for being in charge and hurting them with the whips. Molly on the other hand liked the humans. She was upper class on the farm so she got treated better then all the rest of the animals. She was given ribbons to wear in her hair. These ribbons the pigs viewed as a badge of slavery. As Snowball said, "Comrade, those ribbons that you are so devoted to are the badge of slavery. Can you not understand that li

My First Home in New York

There are places I cannot visit. Places of excruciating sadness, grief, and sorrow. However, there are also places that fill my heart with love. They say people make places special. I say special places are built by memories. You can't love a place if you have no memories built there. There is this place that brings a smile to my face just by thinking of it. It is a place where I built a lot of memories along with my family. This place was my first home. A home is a place of comfort not a simple structure that one can live in. Home is a place where you feel safe and loved. It is a place that holds good memories. Home is a place that brings a sigh of relief as you walk through the door. I remember it was a one-bedroom apartment where I lived with my family. My family consisted of my older brother Henry, my older sister Wendy and my mother Virginia. I was 10 years old at the time. My family and I came to the United States but my mother didn't have a place of her own. Therefore, we were

Juries are Not Judges

It is three o'clock in the morning and you receive a knock on your door. Slowly but surely you stumble out of bed, down the stairs, and to the front foyer. The second the door opens a flash light is shined into your eyes and you are asked to identify yourself. The moment after you let the words slip from your mouth, you feel the cold steel handcuffs around your wrists. It all happens so fast and you barely here the words "You have been arrested for the murder of Jane Doe. You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say or do can and will be used against you in the court of law. You have the right to attorney. If you cannot afford an attorney, one will be appointed to you. Do you understand these rights as the have been read to you? " You slowly nod your head although you really do not understand what is happening- you did not kill ˜Jane Doe' nor have you killed anyone in your life. This is just a huge misunderstanding. It is now six months later and you are sitting besid

Since he was not named chief their family had to move to an even smaller village named Qunu. Catastrophically his father passed away with lung disease when Mandela was nine years old. He then was adopted by Chief Jongintaba Dalindyebo as a favor to his father. When Nelson was six-teen years old he took part of a very important African tradition. In this ceremony he would undertake a surgical procedure called circumcision. He would be have this operation with twenty-five other boys. At this ceremony Chief Meligqili would speak. But since their land was controlled by white men the speech was sad and resentful. Since he was adopted he was presumed to be in a high office as a counselor to a chief. Since he

3M and Six Sigma Research Paper

The Total Quality Management theory that will be analyzed and reviewed in this research paper will be that of Six Sigma. 3M™ will be the company that will be used today to help analyze the strengths, weaknesses, and effects of Six Sigma. Multiple case studies were reviewed while conducting this research. These case studies are intended to give reader a better understanding of how Six Sigma is applied and used in a corporate setting. In the year 1902 five men (Henry S. Bryan, John Dwan, William A. McGonagle, Hermon W. Cable, and Dr. J. Danley Budd) in Two Harbors, Minnesota originally wanted to start a company that would mine a specific type of mineral whose sole purpose would be to grind wheels. This idea soon led to the creation of The Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing Co. (3M™). Mining eventually became null and void with every attempt failing and heavy losses occurring. This motivated the founders to look elsewhere for profits which eventually brought the company to Duluth, M

Crucial Conversations

"The single biggest problem in communication is the illusion that it has taken place." - George Bernard Shaw Crucial conversations are ones that happen to everyone. They are the day-to-day conversations that affect your life. You may be wondering, what makes a conversation crucial vs. plain vanilla? A crucial conversation is a discussion between two or more people where the stakes are high, emotions run strong and opinions vary. Everyone has encountered situations where promises have been broken, expectations have been violated and people have just flat out acted inappropriately. These are actions that trigger the need for a crucial confrontation, or holding someone accountable. Most of us are letting our emotions, past experiences and stories drive our actions. These actions trigger the need for a crucial conversation, or holding someone accountable for their actions face-to-face. Letter from Birmingham Jail - Martin Luther King

The letter of Birmingham Jail written by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in 1963 is known as one of the many classic of the civil rights movement during this time period. This letter was a response to a public statement of concern and caution published by eight white religious leaders of the South. This letter, if read, can be said to make someone finally and fully see Martin Luther King Jr.'s standpoint. In the beginning, he starts off by saying, "if I sought to answer all of my criticismsI would have no time for constructive work." In this short phrase, Martin displays how responsible he is when simply talking about this subject. Although he would want to answer many of them, he sees no purpose if he would just be repeating his standpoint over and over and not be able to get to the heart of his problem. Right after this he begins to explain his reason for being locked up in that Birmingham jail cell and so this is where what he said is surely to touch the reader at the current

Life of a Hatchling Turtle

It was time. It was time to get out of the protective shell that has kept me safe for the past 50 days. I was ready to join my turtle sibling on the journey to the sea. I wiggled my body in any and every position I could, thrashing my front fins as hard as I could trying to break through. It took all my energy to only make a slight little crack in which the salty air poured through. I was slightly discouraged at the fact my tremendous amount of effort had a very little effect on my attempt to get it out. I continued to fight my way out of the shell for what seemed like hours, until finally my persistent efforts awarded me with a crack in my shell, large enough for me to squeeze my head through and push my way of my safe haven. Finally in just a few moments I would be united with my siblings. Finally completely out of my shell the salty breeze seemed to summoning me towards it, wherever that breeze was coming from must be where I am supposed to be going with my other siblings. That's w

Narrative of a Wrestling Tournament

I reluctantly walked into the Rochester Civic Center locker room with a sports duffle bag overflowing with some wrestling gear and clothes I had packed from last night. This place gives me nerves from past tournaments that I had wrestled in that left me with a 0-2 win-loss record. This is a highly regarded tournament and wrestlers from all around Minnesota and nearby states came to see if they got what it takes to leave being number one on the totem pole in their substantially large brackets. Chills are running through my back as I begin slowly retracting my duffle bag Velcro as the sound seems to echo through the vacant bleak locker room. Brandon and Tanner, my wrestling buddies; who are out of my league in terms of wrestling experience and knowledge, came with me to the tournament. "Hey guys, are you nervous to wrestle today. Like my body is warm, but my hands and feet are frozen cold," I say as the three of us are sitting on the dilapidated seats that creek with every subtle mov

Electrosurgery - Reflective Account

During a recent practice placement in plastic surgery theatres, I observed a situation where safety was a major concern. The surgical list was of oncology patients having breast surgeries. The particular case in question was of a middle-aged patient undergoing a mastectomy and reconstructive surgery. The surgeons were plastics registrar and led by consultant. The surgery started as per plan and without concern. It was mid-way through the procedure where the complications began. It was noted that there seemed to be a problem with the diathermy smoke evacuation. An item called the Lina Shark system was being used, a pencil diathermy tool with evacuation unit. The first of the problems seemed to be that the length of the hose to the evacuation unit was limited and therefore the scrub nurse unclipped the item to maximize the length available to the surgeon; this was not ideal as it meant that the unit was now almost up against the surgical field and surgery was, although brief, interrup

The Role of a Mother

"Are you hot? Are you cold?" "Are you wearing that?" "Where are your books and your lunch and your homework at? Grab your coat and your gloves and your scarf and hat. Don't forget; you got to feed the cat!" Anita Renfroe wrote these catchy words for the song "Momisms"," sung to the familiar tune of the William Tell Overture. Her words best describe a typical day of mayhem through the eyes of a mother. Mothers who stay at home know that at times, their lives can be discombobulating. Despite the chaos, stay-at-home mothers get the tremendous responsibility of only having one chance of raising their children in such a way that makes a difference in their children's lives and in society. Throughout history, society has looked upon the male as the breadwinner: the one expected to work and support the family. The mother has been viewed as the nurturer: the one to stay home and raise the children. During the 1960's, women wanted more rights, power, and the ability to get higher paying jobs.

Overcoming Hatred

"Hate is an insecurity in disguise." - Tyler Blizzard Unfortunately, there are countless people out there that are disliked because of race, religion, sexual orientation, or disability. On our part, this problem needs to be diagnosed along with a workable solution. First and foremost, we judge one another based on stereotypical reasons. About 24 students are enrolled in a normal classroom at North Port High School. 23 out of the 24 are Caucasian. That one other child is African-American. The others do not include him in things such as every day conversations, thinking that just because he is different they should treat him with disgust and disrespect. That
