College Scholarship Essay

I have always known what I wanted to be ever since I was a young girl. I know it was meant for me to help people in any way possible. Although, I have had challenges get in the way, of doing what my vision was, I always fell back to it. At this stage in my life, I now know that fashion is how I will change people. Through fashion, I have been allowed to give back in varieties of ways. I feel it is important for young women to feel good about themselves, and who they are. Fashion begins with a mother creating a style for her child. This may range from how the mother cares for the child's health all the way to the clothing. It is important for individuals to express themselves, this should include all races, genders, and belief systems. Focusing on individual personalities allows me to assist them with positive and meaningful fashion choices. An individual with lots of energy and boldness may dress different from a person that is depressed and has low self-esteem. I want to help them see how their appearance represents how they feel inside and out. This can range from a natural hairstyle to whatever is the next trend in hairstyle. Fashion can provide insig

Ulysses by Alfred Lord Tennyson

Alfred, Lord Tennyson's "Ulysses," expresses a powerful message about life and time. Though it may seem these two would go head-to-head, Tennyson finds a connection between the two in Ulysses' story. Conveying that living life to the fullest is a journey that can only be ended by death; age doesn't put a stop to you fulfilling your aspirations in life and time is on your side. Because the poem was written shortly after Tennyson's close friend, Arthur Henry Hallam, died some may see a connection between Ulysses and Tennyson. "Ulysses" is a testimony of Tennyson's commitment to keep living and writing, even after suffering such a tragic loss. Though the poem contains multiple types of poetic elements, there were two that seemed to really support Tennyson/Ulysses' argument: imagery and symbolism. Along with having an intimate connection with his poem, Tennyson leans on the effects of imagery and symbolism as his support to help state his claim. Like "Memoriam," this

Summary of The Awakening by Kate Chopin

"Remember always that you not only have the right to be an individual you have an obligation to be one," wrote Eleanor Roosevelt in her novel, You Learn by Living. Roosevelt was signifying that individualism is not an option but an obligation to yourself. Being your own individual allows you to believe that you are capable to learn and shape yourself into a powerful person and therefore act the part. This idea is a potent influence that can have an effect on the way people act as a whole. Throughout the novel The Awakening, Kate Chopin uses allegory to show a psychological struggle for happiness, independence, and relationships through the character of Edna Pontellier. One way Edna's behavior changes throughout the novel is with her struggle for her own happiness while trying to live up to expectations of society. While Edna was having a conversation with her friend, Madame Ratignolle, she was thinking about how her title as a wife was only for the benefit her husband and di

Crossing Brooklyn Ferry" by Walt Whitman

In the poem "Crossing Brooklyn Ferry,"" by Walt Whitman, connection is being explored between humans in relation to space and time. The use of Imagery becomes a way that is used to describe the observations, and surroundings that are being made while riding the ferry between Brooklyn and Manhattan. He develops these images throughout the course of the poem. The poem explores the difficulties of discovering the relevance of life. The methods that helped Whitman hold his own idea of the importance of life are defined with some simple yet discerning and convincing observations. By living under and for the standards of others, a person can never live a gratifying life. The poem lays emphasis on the idea, that humans are equal and share the same experiences from birth till death. Whitman begins to illustrate his love and curiosity for the hundreds of people that ride the ferry every day. His thoughts lead him to curiosity, which made him think about

Nathaniel Hawthorne and the Depravity of Man

According to Mary Rucker, literary critic and author of Boys Don't Cry, Nathaniel Hawthorne believed that "humanity must shape its aspirations in terms of the decreed conditions of existence, which is unalterably imperfect" (446). Hawthorne's embracement of man's flawed humanity developed through the influence of Puritan philosophies on Hawthorne, igniting his Romantic soul with criticism for the Puritan's belief in total depravity and the corruption of humans' wicked nature. In "The Birthmark" and "Young Goodman Brown," Hawthorne criticizes the Puritans' belief in the depravity of man to convey his notion that people are inherently flawed, so people must accept their own nature and others' flaws. Hawthorne embraces man's imperfect nature by criticizing the Puritan philosophy of total depravity through the characterization of Aylmer and Georgiana in "The Birthmark." Aylmer is significant in "The Birthmark" for symbolizing the Puritans'

Humbling Lessons in Literature

Authors use many different tactics when composing works. The intent of the work helps determine the tools used. There are two themes that remain consistent in all writings: the purpose for writing and the attitude of the writing. In 1948, American Shirley Jackson wrote a short story for the New Yorker entitled "The Lottery." Jackson uses tradition and horror and tragedy to help lead her readers towards insight in their own lives and morals. English author David Herbert Lawrence published "The Rocking-Horse Winner" in Harper's Bazaar in 1926. Lawrence uses greed and discontent as the setting for this heartbreaking tale. Both works use pain and death to try to teach lessons about love and morals and to try to cause the audience to evaluate different aspects in their lives. It can be difficult to determine an author's purpose for writing something. Shirley Jackson said that her main purpose for writing "The Lottery" was "to shock the story's reade

Social Anxiety and Social Phobia

What is social anxiety? Social anxiety is something that millions of people suffer with throughout their lives. Social Anxiety also known as Social Phobia, its a permanent fear of embarrassment in social situations. Its much different from shyness of stage fright however it does involve similar symptoms. Social phobia causes people to avoid most social situations and feel extremely self conscious while in one. Once you develop a social anxiety you will start to constantly be in panic, making it hard to be in any social situations this will effect your everyday life drastically. Many people ask if social anxiety can go away by itself. Generally it doesn't just go away by itself because it is treated as a chronic condition and requires intervention. Most people recover from their social anxiety after long sessions of counseling and letting go of the feeling of constant fear and anxiety. You may see why a human can't just get over something that they've had had their entire lives, it aff

Short Story - Beautiful Eyes

Grace looked out at the glistening horizon stretched out in front of her. She couldn't help but smile at the unmistakable beauty. The water looked as if there were billions of sparkling diamonds floating peacefully on the water.  She turned her face upward toward the welcoming heat of the sun and let her mind go blank. She stretched out her tired arms and wiggled her painted toes in the hot, wet sand. She listened to the sound of the waves not far from where she stood now. As she began to walk toward the sea, she closed her eyes. Then everything shattered.  She remembered. It was just like watching a terrible movie. She saw her mother, Amy, beautiful, and loving. She saw her father, Henry, funny and patient. She saw her brother Michael, with his beautiful eyes. Nobody Grace had known had eyes like his, a beautiful, bright blue. He was only six when it happened. She was fifteen. The family had been packed into the old, rusting pick-up truck they had owned years before Grace was born.

NCAA Athletes Should Be Paid

What separates college and professional athletes? The obvious answer is that professional athletes get paid for the sport they play but college students do not. In my eyes, this is strange; both groups are doing the exact same thing but college students are getting a degree while playing a sport. College athletes spend the almost the same amount of time practicing, working out, and playing games as professionals do, but college players also have to manage going to class and completing their school work. NCAA student-athletes should be paid for three main reasons: for the amount of time put into sports, the improper use and distribution of money, and the motivation to finish college. A huge part of being an NCAA student-athlete is going to school and getting decent grades. Achieving good grades takes a majority of a normal students time; imagine adding a full time sport, which now gives the student-athlete no time. As an NCAA athlete myself, I am an example of this. While in season

Love's Reciprocation in The Odyssey

What is love? Some say love is attraction; a bond between two people romantically involved. Some say love is passion, or a need to have something. You cannot function without it. Love flows like a river, endlessly drifting until it expands to the everlasting sea and, although it may be changed, it still remains. Some dare to dip their toes in. Some fear the current taking over them and drifting them to a lost and lonely world without it. Love surrounds us in everything we do. How could we live without love? With all the passion, all the mouths of this river, how do we know if this love is unconditional? How do we know how the things we love feel about us? When you think of love, do you think of two people who never leave each other's side? Two people bound by an eternal force that compels them to stand by their partner. Think of The Odyssey. The focus of the story revolves around Odysseus trying to return to his wife on Ithaca. Penelope waits, patiently, desperately, anxiously. It cou

The Incomparable Talent of Michael Jackson

Music and dance was forever revolutionized by one man. Trends were set, records were shattered, and hearts were permanently touched. The whole world could only watch in shock as this phenomenon altered lives, and established the true meaning of entertainment. Michael was the seventh child of the Jackson family, he debuted on the professional music scene at the age of eleven as a member of The Jackson 5 and began a solo career in 1971 while still being a member of the group. He was referred to as the "King of Pop" in following years, five of his solo studio albums have become some of the world's best-selling records: Off the Wall (1979), Thriller (1982), Bad (1987), Dangerous (1991) and HIStory (1995). All of these great hits are still well known and are being played every day. Michael was not just a caring and compassionate man, but an extremely talented one too. He put his all in his songs and he had "Magic Feet."  Although the media was not Michael's biggest fan towards the end of

Alfred Kinsey - Influential Psychologist

Alfred Kinsey was on of the most influential psychologists of the 20th century. His studies on the sexual behaviors of male and females help the "sexual revolution." He was born on June 23, 1894, Hoboken, New Jersey. He passed away on August 25, 1959 in Bloomington, India. His religious father insisted that he should drop his interest un biology an instead he should study engineering. After two years studying engineering Alfred had finally had enough. He stopped studying to become an engineer; instead he enrolled Bowdoin college and studied biology. His father and him did not reconcile after this. Kinsey pied his dues and lager on became a professor. He wrote many books but, even though he books were well received by authorities in the field he was still really upset that he was not offered to be a professor at a superior university. Maybe because of his disappointment Kinsey made a sudden career chang

My Trip to Cuba

I had just gotten off my flight to Havana, Cuba, at 8:22 post meridian. I was so ecstatic about being able to visit Cuba for the first time. What really made the trip worth wild was the fact that the week I was staying there The Carnival of Santiago de Cuba was being held. I had been saving up my money from my second job, working as a body guard at night for a local club, just for this occasion. It had always been a childhood dream to go to Cuba. Both of my parents were from Cuba, but came to America via a boat for the possibility of a better life. At the time of their departure the Cuban Revolution was taking place. My mother was pregnant with me, so my parents made a mutual decision to leave for America. Finally being able to step foot on

The Bootlegged Beginnings of NASCAR

Nearing the American prohibition era in the rural south, people in big cities needed a way to acquire alcohol. This is how the moonshining business became a booming industry. With all of this illegal liquor being produced, the distillers of this illegal liquor needed a way to move their product from rural sights to the big cities. The distillers would need to find the best most experienced and dare devilish drivers to move their illegal liquor to the cities. These bootleg drivers needed to be fast fearless and be equipped with the most state of the art equipment but also not stand out and to avoid detection. Although some NASCAR historians believe that moonshine runners were not the true roots to the multi billion-dollar industry, NASCAR came from the skilled bootleg driver's tearing around a homemade racetrack competing against other moonshine runners. Richmond Hobson proposed the idea of Prohibition in 1913 wanting to stop all of the alcohol sale in Alabama by putting such a high ta

Comparing Anime with Cartoons

The word anime comes from the word "animation", but it is used to be mean Japanese animation. While "anime" is simply Japanese cartoons, we use the word "anime" because of how vastly different anime is versus cartoons. The differences include the target age ranges, the types and complexity of plots, culture differences and art style. Cartoons are generally geared towards children, with the exception of adult humor shows such as Family Guy, The Simpsons and a few others on Cartoon Network's Adult Swim. Anime on the other hand does have anime geared towards children, but as a whole, anime is geared towards all age, from children to adults, with a wide range of anime to choose from. Since cartoons are generally geared to children they tend to contain simple plots that allow children to

Feminism and Heteronormativity

I am a woman before I am a human being. The first thing someone sees when looking at me is my gender. The fight for the right to value being human over being male or female began in the 1800s and has persisted to the present day. The oppression of women has been a heated and powerful issue that has stimulated the need for political action in the form of the feminist movement. However, society has also placed our sexual identification above the fact that we all are human. Although the feminist movement has resulted in magnificent leaps forward for women, it has done little to address the oppression of women in this minority. The First Wave of the feminist movement began in the nineteenth century with the suffragettes' fight for political and legal equality. The start of this movement was largely spurred by the realization of the "disappointments of the new democracy" (Baumgardner, p. 37). Many women at this time were involved in the movement to abolish slavery, fighting fo

Requiring Students to Wear Uniforms

Some people believe that requiring students to wear school uniforms would be a violation of individual rights and not help the school environment at all. Others say uniforms will benefit students. High school students should be required to wear uniforms. First, uniforms will help disciple the students. For example, uniforms will make students focus more, instead of worrying about their clothes. "As fashion and trends change, students become more concerned with how they look and how they are perceived than they do with their academic success and achievement" (Duvall et al. 2004). Grades will improve because students will be focused on schoolwork, not on what classmates are wearing. Students will be dressed more professionally giving them a lot of self-confidence and self-disciple. "Students have also lost the professionalism involved with education; students do not feel that school is a place of work but rather a place to hang out with friends and socialize" (Duvall

Nickel and Dimed: On (Not) Getting By in America

Sometimes our judgment is clouded by money. Sometimes we want money so bad that we're willing to degrade ourselves just to get it. The selection I've chosen was an excerpt from the book Nickel and Dimed: On (Not) Getting By in America, and in this excerpt my eyes were opened to all the wrong doings in corporate America. The concepts that this section touch on are conflict theory, functionalism and feminism theory. Reading this, I've found many concepts that can correlate but the main concepts I'll touch on are listed above. Conflict theory is an approach that examines how and why groups disagree, struggle over power, and compete for scarce resources (such as property, wealth and prestige). Day by day citizens of the United States of America go and try to obtain what they think is the American dream. Every day they work, work just to make an honest living or in some cases work to provide and do the very best they can to take care and maintain for their family. People at the top of cor

The Successes of Bill Gates and Steve Jobs

Today, technology plays a big role in today's society. Every generation has some form of technology; may it be a laptop, desktop, cell phone, ipod, and etcetera. No two men have made greater advances in technology as Bill Gates and Steve Jobs, cofounders of Microsoft and Apple, respectively. These two men revolutionized the world of computers and with their enhancements to technology, changed the way people viewed and used these electronics. Both men, both born in the same year, both started at the same starting point but with two totally different attitudes and uprisings. Although both men conquered the same thing, the road to get there was a troubling one. Bill Gates born and raised in Seattle, Washington, was the second child. His father was a lawyer and his mother was a teacher. He was an extremely gifted and talented child that did well in all subjects but excelled in mathematics. At the age of thirteen his parent felt that he wasn't being challenged enough, thus being put into

Ecosystem Protection and Species Protection

Resources for biodiversity conservation are always in high demand, and thus are always limited. There has always been the debate on whether we should protect a single species or focus on the ecosystem as a whole at the cost of some species. In certain instances, it does make sense to choose one over the other. However, these two concepts do not have to be mutually exclusive. In fact, working towards the protection of one can serve to protect the other in many cases. One of the better known endangered species that protection resources are campaigned for are tigers. In 2010, at the International Tiger Forum in St. Petersburg, over $330 million was raised to protect tigers and help aid in their recovery. However, some have argued that while this is a triumph for conservation efforts, we shouldn't be "cherry-picking" charismatic species. The Head of the World Wildlife Federation's Tigers Alive initia

Aristotle on Nicomachean and Virtue Ethics

Virtue ethics is a group of theories in moral philosophy that has its roots in ancient greek philosophy with Aristotle being largely influential. Contrary to other theories in normative ethics, which tend to ask "what actions are right?", virtue ethics tends to ask the question "what kind of person do I want to be?", and instead of defining one's moral duties by nature, virtue ethics seeks out the "good life" and what conditions and characteristics make up this "good life". Virtue ethics prescribes that we imagine a picture of the good life and of the good person and act in accordance to those ideals. In virtue ethics the standard of right action is as follows: "An act is morally right just because it is one that a virtuous person, acting in character, would do in that situation" (Shafer-Landau 253). According to this standard, actions are not right because of the results they yield, or because they follow a strictly formulated rule,

Losing the Golden Spoon

I was one of those boys who were born with a golden spoon in his mouth. When I was 3 years old, my dad had cars he put on the road for public transportation, though he was riding a Vespa motorcycle. He eventually acquired a lot of cars which were at the disposal of my younger ones and me. We had our own driver, my Mom had hers and my Dad had his. We had whatever we wanted, went to the best schools, and ate three course meals three times a day. We wore the best clothes, which were bought already made, (then it was only the affluent that could afford those) and wore the best shoes. We had maids and a lot of helpers in the house. We had whatever we wanted even without asking. Growing up I was invited to every party in town and I had a lot of friends. Everyone I met wanted to be my friend because I was a rich man's son and was always had lots of money, and of course went everywhere chauffeur-driven. My younger ones and I had professionally dressed drivers pick us from school which made us

Dealing with Peer Pressure

Peer pressure is something that everyone has to face at one point and it can change your perspective on someone or something. From the time you are young, you are influenced by people or things. Peer pressure mostly occurs for middle school and high school age teenagers. Growing up, your parents always told you that you should not smoke, do drugs or drink alcohol. Many teenagers rebel against that and they do it anyways. Maria was about 15 years old when this occurred. It was a half day, so school was dismissed at 11:45 AM. Finally the bell rang and Maria's face was full of excitement because she knew she was going to hang out with a couple of her friends. Hearing the bell ring, she quickly pushed through the hallways to get to lobby and go outside. She had to meet her friends outside at exactly 11:45 because the security guards do not like it when people are outside and crowding the entrance of the school, so she wouldn't of been able to wait outside for a long period of time. America and Our Wounded Warriors

"Most of us have had to sign waivers where we understand that the housing we were in failed to meet minimal government standards." Wounded war veterans from Fort Irwin in California stated. Similar things have been said by other war veterans from many different places. For example, from Fort Campbell in Kentucky, A wounded veteran said "There were yellow signs on the doors stating that our barracks had asbestos." Asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral that can cause health problems with the lungs. The wounded warriors are not all getting the help that they are needed especially if they have Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. This is why I chose the subject of ' Is the American public turning its back on wounded warriors?' These wounded warriors have served this country and America can't even support them to get better. The Government says that there is not enough money for the medical field to have new and updated equipment, but I think there would be enough i

Notes on Hitler's Consolidation of Power

1. What do sources A and B suggest about German attitudes to the Treaty of Versailles? Source A was informing the German people that the Treaty of Versailles was being signed and swears to get vengeance on the Allies. "Vengeance!" implies that the Germans were very angry and unhappy about the treaty and wanted to get revenge, showing their extreme discontent. "Disgraceful" suggests that the Germans were ashamed and let down by their government. "To which it is entitled" conveys that the Germans felt they did not deserve the punishment they were being given and wanted to take back what was rightly theirs. Source B is a cartoon published in a German right wing magazine in 1921 titled 'Stab in the Back'. It portrays lots of soldiers in a trench with members of the German government standing on the ground above them, the one standing in the front holding a knife over the soldiers, to symbolize them "stabbing the army in the back" by signing the Trea
