Finding My Strength in the Weight Room

The sound of weights crashing on the rubber padded floor, your partner yelling at you to do just "one more", all in front of the eighties rock played from the speakers that look as if they haven't been removed since the sixties. You set down the pair of rusted blocks of iron from your last set and glance at the black and white mural of Arnold Schwarzenegger staring down at you, then back at yourself in the mirror. This may all seem like a perturbed place in the eyes of others, but to me it is a place where I can truly let go of the world around me. Break ups, broken friendships, loss of loved ones, or anything else imaginable, this is the place where I can dilute all the bad in the world while gaining confidence and growing a

Self-Respect and Respect for Others

In the middle of the night, I scroll carelessly on Twitter through tons of irrelevant posts, but there was one that caught my eye. It states a true fact about today's generation of kids on how teens follow the crowd and ruthless celebrities. I believe the media turned most of us into the most disrespectful, insecure, and immature people. I see it as a disgrace; it makes my heart-ache seeing our generation behave in this manner. There was a time when everyone believed they can be an independent and successful person now everyone wishes they can be like someone else. Song lyrics became angrier, raunchier, and discerning. As I ask myself "Is this role model criteria?" Teens see it as, being someone you aren't is a good thing, and pretending to be someone's fr

Thoreau's Journey to Enlightenment

In the early nineteenth century, a philosophical movement known as Transcendentalism approached America and evolved into a literary expression for writers all over the world. The supporters of this effort believed that knowledge through intuition and observation of the internal spirit could be reached. Though their hold on the public imagination was short-lived, the long-lasting influence that the Transcendentalists had on American literature was irrefutable. A prominent contributor to this act was Henry Thoreau. His numerous literature pieces, each one being unique from the next, became a significant part of our American culture. Even though Thoreau perished over 150 years ago, the questions he raised about the meaning of nature, the need for wildlife as a stimulant for the spirit, and an individual's rights and responsibilities, are still fundamental issues in American life. Among many things, he is widely known for his transcendentalist philosophical writings, which reflected upon t

Rationalism and Empiricism

In the 17th century, philosophers René Descartes and John Locke challenged the idea of knowledge and its origin. Locke reasoned that knowledge cannot be absolute because it relies on the senses and observations. Descartes, however, argued that knowledge depends on absolute certainty which can only be obtained through innate ideas. Their disagreement leaves one wondering what the true source of knowledge really is. I propose that Locke's argument that knowledge is founded on our senses and experiences best accounts for acquiring knowledge. In An Essay Concerning Human Understanding, Locke disputes the notion of innate ideas as a response to Cartesian Philosophy. In his essay, Locke claims all knowledge can be obtained "barely by the use of our natural faculties without the help of any innate impressions" (642). Locke asserts that innate ideas, if they do exist, must be universally agreed upon and known to the mind without any enlightenment or "activation."

Managing My Income

Almost everyone has to work. The purpose of working is nothing for the money. Everything in life is closely associated with money. However, everyone has different money management. For me, my salary is usually divided into three parts. One is for taking of my parents, one is for savings and investment, and the other one is for the necessities of my life. I contribute partial salary to take care of my parents. They don't have enough money to pay for living when they are in retirement. As their child, surely I should have to burden the responsibility of attending on them. That is not only for the filial piety but also thanks for the good upbringing. I do my best to meet their requirements and provide them with the best life quality. For example,

Grotesques in Winesburg, Ohio

According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, "grotesque" is defined as "very strange or ugly in a way that is not normal or natural; extremely different from what is expected or usual." Grotesque describes each individual throughout the short stories of Sherwood Anderson's 1919, Winesburg, Ohio. Anderson uses a collection of "grotesques" to build our understanding of the town, a small mid-west town on the background of the Industrial Revolution. This was a time period when city life gradually transitioned to town life for most people, and the people in the towns faced all kinds of emotional and psychological problems. A town is more than a place comprised of the people who live in it. The character of a small town is formed and developed by the people who live in that town. Small towns across America have alway

Themes of Identity in King Lear's Speech

King Lear's speech to his daughters signifies a pivotal moment in the play's plot. By denying him his men, the king's daughters have essentially stripped Lear of his old identity of king and pushed him into a new identity as a mad old man. It is not just that he "needs" his men; they are practically the culmination of his life's work and accomplishments as a king. The significance of the speech is that Lear is finally becoming aware of the character of his daughter and simultaneously the loss of his power. This moment moves the plot forward by highlighting the change in identities from doting daughters and an angry king to devilish queens and a mad old man. Also dramatically highlighted, is the switching of power from father to daughters. In the events leading up to Lear's speech, his daughter Goneril has told him that he must send away half his knights and men if he wants to stay at her palace. Unwilling to lose any of his followers, he sends Kent to notify his other daugh

Crime and Gun Shot Residue

Thanks to all the crime scene shows on television today, almost everyone is aware of gunshot residue. In the shows, like CSI, we can see a crime scene investigator swab a suspect's hands for an invisible powder and then place the swab into a liquid chemical to see if there is a color change. If there is a color change, it means that there are GSR particles present on the suspect's hands. However, real life is never that simple. By looking at the actual science behind GSR, we can see that it gunshot residue analysis is not as cut and dry as the television shows make it seem. There are actually many problems with the process and results gunshot residue analysis that are not depicted on television, making it better for only preliminary testing in the forensics investigation. GSR, also known as firearm residue, is defined as the "residue from the primer that is produced when a gun is fired" (James, Nordby, & Bell, 2014, p. 572; Firearms Residue, 2011). After a bullet or cartridg

Long-Term Effects of Positive Parenting

Introduction Many people fail to realize that children are practically products of their environment, and thus should be nurtured and educated in the right manner. The research should focus on how parenting may affect children, and thus the findings may allow us to see if positive parenting affects the way a child develops his/her cognitive skills. Positive parenting is seen as a way of raising a child by helping the child develop good cognitive skills and to become a productive member of society. Gender And Ethnohistory in Mesoamerica

I have found learning about the history of Mexico is something that has become very interesting to me since the start of this class. Exploring the amazing creation of Mayan society and seeing the horrific actions brought upon by the Europeans conquering native Indian land, an array of emotion has come along with the enriched information in our teachings. With the opportunity to learn even more through this assignment, I am privileged to have researched the following topic of ethnohistory and gender in Mesoamerica. With the article chosen through our Southwestern College library, I am able to see deeper into the lives of the indigenous people who lived through the Spanish Conquest, with a particular view, but not subject to, the female aspect during this time. The interest in gender when studying history is not very prevalent in many cases. With the emergence of ethnohistory and feminist studies, the question of woman's history, especially in colonized worlds, has arisen (Silverblatt, 6

A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens

Many people are more concerned with money then the well-being of others. When we make money our focus in life we cut ourselves off from people and true joy. Consequently, Scrooge does that exact thing. In A Christmas Carol, Scrooge proves that money can be the end to our humanity if we make it our main focus in life. In the beginning of the story Scrooge has turned many people away because of the selfishness and obsession that consumes him. When Scrooge is with the ghost of Christmas past, Scrooge visits himself while he is with Belle, his former fiancée. Belle has chosen to release Scrooge from his promise of marriage because she sees that he has become infatuated with money and with his greed he would never be able to truly love her without having regrets. In the present, Scrooge has also pushed his nephew away because of greed. His nephew comes to wish Scrooge a merry Christmas, Scrooge being the miser that he is responds, "bah humbug!" Because Scrooge is so engrossed by money he has pushed away people that wish to show him love and make his li

The Day of the Last Rock Fight

In the short story "The Day of the Last Rock Fight," by Joseph Whitehall, Ronnie Quiller is responsible for the murder of Gene Hanlon and the suicide of Peter Irish. Ronnie Quiller tells the story in the form of a letter to his father. The purpose of the letter is to ask to come home from Fallbrook Academy, a special school for the emotionally disturbed teenagers. Ronnie was secretly the only witness to the murder of Gene Hanlon by the hand of Peter Irish, Ronnie's best friend. Ronnie's father sent him to Fallbrook after he began to have nightmares from keeping his secret. Ronnie wrote this letter to his father because he noticed from the news that Peter had committed suicide and now he wants to return home. Ronnie had the ability for moral decisions and therefore is accountable for those decisions; he lost the chance to save both Gene and Peter. Ronnie missed opportunities to make appropriate moral decisions to prevent the death of Gene's murder and Peter's suicide. Ron

Sinful Nature in Dante's Inferno

Dante's Inferno, is an allegorical poem telling the story of Dante's journey through hell, led by Virgil the Roman poet. In the poem, Hell is depicted as nine circles of suffering located within the center of Earth. The arrangement of the poem takes the reader step by step through greater and greater sins. The content of the book shows the different punishments for sins, which are symbolic of the sins themselves. The sins committed have a direct connection to the severity of the punishment and the punishment itself. Dante is forced to battle his own sin, as well as the sins of those in Hell. The Inferno envelops the familiar conflict of good and evil or heaven and hell. Dante's use of allegory is demonstrated in the use of symbolic punishments. Throughout the Inferno, Dante explores allegory in the punishments enforced upon the sinners is followed through out all nine circles of hell. Dante ensured that each punishment symbolized the sin that had been committed. Those having lived a

Song Summary - To the Moon and Back

Song lyrics can express powerful, passionate feelings; they can verbalize a feeling that you yourself could not put into words. Each song conveys a different message. They can be upbeat and carefree tunes, heart-wrenching break-up anthems, or angry and vulgar raps. Spencer Fort is an alternative singer and songwriter that coveys honest emotions through his lyrics. In his song, "To the Moon and Back," he uses both song lyrics and music to express his desire to ultimately live a full, rewarding life after he overcomes the obstacles he faces. The lyrics alone carry this message that Spencer Fort is going to make his life worth something and that he will be able to look back at his life and smile in the end. The beginning of the song talks about a man up on the moon smiling down at Spencer. The man represents what Spencer wants to accomplish: Being able to look back at his life and smile down on it. The moon is the only consistent thing in his journey as a musician. As he states in the song, "I get older every day," different anxieties approach and challenge him because his job is so unpredictable as a singer just starting off in the music industry.

Zero Tolerance Policies and Adolescent Development

Abstract In the past couple of decades, public schools in the United States have enforced increasingly punitive methods of discipline. In response to perceived elevation in juvenile crime and school violence, the Clinton Administration signed into law the Gun-Free Schools act of 1994. The act required American schools to enforce mandatory expulsions for any student found in the possession of a firearm on school property. This type of regulation, requiring a mandatory consequence for a predetermined act, is known in the educational realm as a zero tolerance policy. Since 1994, schools throughout America have expanded zero tolerance policies with the stated purpose of maintaining safe learning environments. Research indicates that, since these policies have been introduced, school environments have become more hostile and less conducive to adolescent development and learning. Furthermore, these policies have pushed many students out of schools and into the juvenile justice system for min

Female Adversity in A Doll's House

In the 19th century, women were treated as though they were silly little children that were expected to look and behave a certain way in order to meet society's expectations. Henrik Ibsen's play, A Doll's House, focuses on the unjust treatment of women and the hardships they faced as they struggled in a society dominated by men. In the play, Nora Helmer and Kristine Linde are two women who have experienced their own share of trials and tribulations as they attempt to survive in a man's world. At first, Nora appears completely content with her husband, Torvald, and the life they share together, but as the play progresses the audience begins to see another side of Nora. The audience begins to find out that she is not a "silly girl," as Torvald calls her, but that she is very bright and capable of doing more than what is expected of her. Nora finally comes to the realization that all her life she has conformed to a certain lifestyle simply to satisfy her husband's and society's

Public Restrooms and Privacy Rights

Privacy is very important to a lot of people because sometimes what a person might do behind closed doors is not meant for everyone to know or see. When one is in public, do they still have the right to privacy? No matter where anyone might be they still have a certain expectation such as using the restroom. It would be kind of bizarre if someone was just watching other people handle their business. The way the restroom is designed can help people use the restroom in peace. The bathrooms visited and documented for this project does reinforce the social and cultural norms with respect to gender and sex because of the gender neutral stalls around Colby-Sawyer and the stalls that are in the bathroom. The bathrooms visited and documented, reinforce social and cultural norms with respect to gender and sex because of the gender neutral bathrooms around the school. Hanging Fire written by Audre Lorde

In the poem "Hanging Fire," written by Audre Lorde, the use of a free verse rhyme scheme and a simple, three stanza pattern promote the use of multiple figurative language examples throughout the poem. The application of figurative language helps the reader to comprehend the struggles that accompany adolescence. The poem begins with the narrator, a fourteen year old girl, that appears to be put out with herself. In line two of the first stanza, she says, "and my skin has betrayed me." This use of personification demonstrates how the narrator feels uncomfortable in her own skin. By providing something, such as skin, human like characteristics that does not previously possess them, the author is able to dramatize the emotional effect the young girl is feeling from her skin. Further on in the same stan

Gender Concepts in Early Childhood

Gender identity develops through the process of interactions of biological, social, behavioral and cognitive-learning factors that occur over time. At birth, almost all infants are socially labeled as either a girl or a boy, based on the appearance of the external genitals. Children may be treated differently, depending upon the labeled sex. As well, a child will act differently by a certain age according to their sex and what they perceive through their gender identity and social influences. According to Lawrence Kohlberg's social cognitive theory, children seem to develop gender concept and understanding in three stages. "First comes gender identity, which is simply the child's ability to label his or her own sex correctly and identify other people as men or women, boys and girls" ( Boyd, Bee, Johnson, 2009.p 257). This stage happens around nine months to two years, and they are capable of identifying faces and people as either male or female. When the child acquires lan

Black Men and Public Space by Brent Staples

In "Black Men and Public Space," Brent Staples explains his how receiving an inheritance of race, has made him submissive to society. No matter where he is, what he's doing or what his attire is, he is considered a threat to those who don't look like him. Staples testifies about being constantly avoided and feared by people who don't even know his true character. He uses personal experiences as well as stories from other black men to shine some light on black men and public space. Staples starts the story with a testimony about him as twenty-two year old college student, walking down the street one random night. He explains to us that a white woman, who seemed to be in her early twenties, is walking front of him. He calls the woman, "his first victim" being that he is considered a predator and that situation being told, is followed by other scenarios. Passing through Hyde Park, an upscale, wealthy neighborhood located near a section of Chicago that was the total opposite, the woman became alarmed of

Motives of Psychological Needs

Psychological needs are subjective needs that an individual must achieve in order to feel balanced. There are many types of psychological needs that are all particular to each individual. I am greatly motivated to meet my needs of order, affiliation, autonomy, and achievement in my life. Needs are driven by two forms of motivation, appetitive and aversive. Appetitive motivation is when an individual is driven to seek out and have, whereas aversive motivation is when an individual is driven to avoid something that is unpleasant. The difference between the two can be shown by hunger and food. An appetitive motivated person will eat food to enjoy the sensory feeling he gets from the food. An aversively motivated person will eat food to avoid the empty feeling of hunger. The need for order in my life is a psychological need that, when met, achieves predictability, organization, and symmetry within my life. My need for order is driven by both appetitive and aversive motives. My appetitive m

The US Constitution - Standing the Test of Time

A bright-faced child enters a Greyhound bus filled to the brim with her fellow eighth grade classmates. A cacophony of excited voices welcomes the girl as she takes her seat next to the window. As the bus takes off in a northeast direction, the realization of the trip finally sinks in. The eighth grade trip to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, is actually happening; good bye parents, good bye school, good bye homework. This trip represented getting to hang-out with friends, to eat all the junk food in the world, and to just have fun. The girl had no idea that once in Philadelphia she would enter into a world entirely different, that of post-revolutionary war America. She walked the cobbled streets that Benjamin Franklin had once strolled on himself, she perused Independence Hall in astonishment, and got to run up the Philadelphia Museum of Arts stairs like Rocky (yes, this had nothing to do with Revolutionary America, it was just fun). She saw the giant crack running up the Bell of Liberty

John Locke and Liberal Political Philosophy

John Locke is one of the founders of "liberal" political philosophy, the philosophy of individual rights and limited government. This is the philosophy on which the American Constitution and all western political systems today are based. In the Second Treatise of Government, Locke's most important political work, he uses natural law to ground his philosophy. But there are many different interpretations of the natural law, from the Ciceronian to the Thomistic to the Grotian. What is Locke's interpretation? What version of natural law supports liberal politics? Some argue that this is a misguided question. They say that Locke's political philosophy is not based on natural law at all, but instead on natural rights, like the philosophy of Thomas Hobbes. This is probably the greatest controversy in Locke inte
