The Constitution and the Rights of SlavesThe Constitution, proposed by James Madison at the convention in Philadelphia in 1787 sought to establish a better set of governing principles for the United States. Though the Constitution maintained the stronghold grip on suppressing the rights of African slaves, it provided a radical change form state sovereignty to federalism while respecting the rights of states. While anti-slavery ideas had started gaining momentum, the Constitution expressed the continuing idea that slaves were property. This can be shown through the fugitive slave clause, which states that escaped slaves were not free once crossing into other states and had to be returned to the owner. This clearly indicates that the Constitution was not trying to abolish slavery, or provide a set of specific rights for slaves, but was merely affirming the fact that whites had supremacy over them. Moreover, the Constitution |

Characters in The Canterbury TalesDescription is very important when trying to visualize characters in a story. A perfect example of this is the direct characterization used by Geoffrey Chaucer in "The Canterbury Tales." The book is full of interesting characters: The Plowman, The Miller, and The Manciple. The Plowman is the brother of another character in the book and is a good and helpful Christian man. The second Character the Miller is very dishonest man who is selfish. Finally the third is the Manciple who is just as dishonest as The Miller only interested in his own profits. All three of these characters are described specifically giving the reader a direct view into these character's humble selfish ways. The Plowman is emphasized as a good and true person who lives in peace by himself and is always willing to assist h |

The Things I CarryThe things I carry varies by the day. Sometimes the things I carry can be of great importance, other times not so much. For example, when I go to the gym, I need to carry my inhaler. Even having mild asthma, I've had asthma attacks before because I forgot it and exercises anyway. It's a crucial item I need to have. I also carry my phone and headphones. If I am not able to listen to music, I just can't work out. It helps make the time go by a lot faster and acts as a type of motivation. To keep my bag safe, I bring a lock so it can be locked up while I workout. I know from experience and working at a gym, that there are those rare times when someone actually decides to go through unlocked lockers and take others stuff. For school, there are definitely things I need to carry with me to be able to get through a class. I find it that even though I'm not taking a math course, having a calculator with me for all my classes can come in handy and it never hurts to have it. It's also essent |

Tracking My Diet for Better HealthBefore going into this assignment, I already knew that my diet was poor. Between going to school full time, working full time, and having very limited skills in the kitchen, it is very difficult for me to have time and energy to cook proper meals or eat healthy. After completing this assignment however, I learned just how poor my diet really is and that I am in need of drastic changes. I tracked my diet from a Thursday to a Saturday. I spend my weekends at work so I thought this was the best time to track my diet because it is a pretty accurate description of what I eat. I am constantly on the go and very busy all week long. I do not set aside enough time to cook meals. My place of employment is in a restaurant so I either bring snacks with me or I order something off of our menu. The first thing that caught my attention on my nutrient report was that I am OK in my sodium intake. I am constantly putting salt on most of my foods, which is a habit I am trying to stray from. I also usuall |

Agent Orange and VietnamVietnam is a small country on the coast of South East Asia. This tiny country has long been ravished by war and conquering neighbors. From the ancient time with one thousand years of dominance from China, to the 1800s with one hundred years of being a colony under France and Japan. In 1954, the country took a twist of faith with the return of Ho Chi Minh after twenty long years of political education abroad. He chased out a weakened French army, and rid the country of the Japanese. Then for the first time in 1955, Vietnam could finally call itself an independent country; only for ten years later the country was under fire, and "the stink of death is obvious at every corner of the country" (Karnow). The Vietnam War marked the country's first struggle as an independent nation, it saw the bloodiest battle it its history. It faced the death of its most profound leader in 1969, along with the countless lives that was lost. Even today, when the country has picked itself up, the |

A Different Kind of Hero - The WatchmenA typical Superman plot consists of burning buildings, damsels in distress, and a text book "bad guy" trying to take over the world. However, Superman always puts the "bad guy" behind bars and walks away unharmed. Innocent damsels and civilians are never hurt when Superman saves the day. He always has a clear choice between right and wrong, and in the end, things always work out the way he wants them to. But, what would it be like if Superman was placed in a realistic city? Would he see the line between right and wrong as clearly? Moral dilemmas and shades of gray surround real life issues. He would feel overwhelmed with the amount of corruption and crime around him. Things would not work out in his favor as easily and, perhaps, he would not be able to save the day using his old methods of crime fighting. A stereotypical superhero, like Superman, can not function in a world with gray areas. In order for heroes to function in a real life situation, they can not be |

Cell Membranes - Diffusion and OsmosisCell membrane is the partially permeable membrane which means only certain molecules can pass through the membrane. Small and non-polar molecules can pass through easily while larger molecules & polar molecules can pass through the vesicles. Cell membrane is made up of phospholipid bilayer and is amphipathic-hydrophilic & hydrophobic areas. The hydrophobic regions avoid contact with water and are located inside and hydrophilic regions have affinity for water and are located inside. The purpose of cell membrane is to determine what goes in the cell and out of the cell. Diffusion is passive transport and is very essential process through which materials move from one place to another. It plays a significant role in biology, chemistry, physics, and in nearly every single part of our life. Diffusion is a result of the continuous thermal motion of atoms and particles and therefore goes from a high concentration gradient to a low concentration gradient. The finishing point of diffusion would be an equal concentration of particles on each side. Diffusion mostly takes place in gas molecules and in liquid molecules. The molecules of gases are in relentless mo |

Anorexia and Bulimia NervosaAnorexia and bulimia are both very harming eating disorders. Both of these disorders are very dangerous and can actually take over someones life. Anorexia and Bulimia are similar but also very different, both still very harming to ones body. According to the DSM-5, someone who is dealing with anorexia has a hard time to take in energy. The individual will maintain their weight low, meaning it is less than normal and less than what the expected weight to be. If battling this disorder, they have strong fear of gaining weight and becoming fat. They also will not realize the seriousness of their current low body weight. In the DSM-5, Bulimia is described as recurrent episodes of binge eating, which is characterized in two ways: 1. Eating in a discrete period of time, the amount of food is usually larger than what most individuals would eat within a similar period of time. 2. They have a lack of control over eating during these episodes. Have a feeling one cannot stop eating or can not c |

India and the Rebellion of 1857In 1857, many native soldiers (also known as sepoys), from the Indian army, rebelled against the British East India Company. This rebellion did not result from just one event, but of several events, which eventually led into many mutinies and civilian rebellions. The events of this rebellion, which is also known as 'India's first war of Independence' should be remembered as it led to permanent changes in how India was governed. This also shows what India was like before and how much the country has changed. It also informs us about the British and Indian attitudes towards each other in the mid-19th century. After the 1857 rebellion, a new royal government that was under the rule of Queen Victoria replaced the East India Company. This meant that they took direct control over the former East India Company's territories and made some negotiations with the Indian Prices to bring them under indirect control. Also the new governor general also took the title of 'viceroy' and w |

My Life in the Bronx"Hey sexy, let me take you inside my place and give you something good to feel on." I am almost positive the old man with a beer can in front of me just said that. I am having a very tough time avoiding eye contact. His puffs of cigarette smoke are clouding the air. Is he going to touch me? Why is he coming so close? Why is he following me? I hear nothing but car honks and this man's irritating, loud, raspy voice. I can almost feel his bulging eyes roaming through my body. Perhaps I should stop looking down at the ground so I can find a police officer. There has got to be police cars around here. Actually, I will keep walking until I get to the station. There are some people around so I should be alright. The Bronx is where my grandparents and parents first moved to when they immigrated into the United States. That is also where my siblings and I were born and raised for several years. W |

Religion and Politics - Mitt Romney and John F. KennedyReligion has been an essential element of American politics since before the nation's founding. Europeans ventured to the new land in search of religious freedom and tolerance, and in that search they created the United States of America. Established upon a principle of freedom of religion and from religion, the United States never strayed from its underlying basis of religious Christian morality. John Adams once said, "We have no government armed with power capable of contending with human passions unbridled by morality and religion...Our constitution was made for a moral and religious people," so despite the fact that our nation's constitution establishes freedom from religion and thusly a government that cannot declare a national religion, religious Christian morality will always play into American politics regardless of the sect or branch of Christianity in power at that time (Romney). In the course of American history, nearly every religion has had to find a way to pro |

The Concept of MotivationThe course textbook defines "motivation" as "a process within a person or an animal that causes it to move towards a goal or away from an unpleasant situation." It continues to examine the four central areas of human motivation. These motives include the motives to eat, love, for sex, and to achieve. This chapter also explains how a motive can be either intrinsic or extrinsic. Intrinsic motivation is the pursuit of something for internal purposes: for its own sake. Extrinsic motivation is the pursuit of external purposes: so impress people or appear a certain way. I plan to thoroughly summarize Motivation and shine a bit of light upon why people do the things that they do. In the past, researchers believed people who were overweight were that way because they had the tendency to overeat or because they were suffering from emotional stress. After extensive controlled studies researchers came up with the set point as an explanation as to why people are naturally overweight or thinner. A |

Elected Officials, Legislative Committees and the Ohio BudgetAn important part of becoming an effective social worker includes understanding social policies. In order to better understand these policies it is necessary to become familiar with elected officials on all levels. An understanding of the policies and the elected officials will also put social workers in a better position to advocate for their clients. The information presented here will help provide a better understanding of our government and how it works. Our current and 44th President of the United States is Barack H. Obama. He is affiliated with the Democratic Party and is serving his second term in office. President Obama is the first African American elected President. He is from a middle-class upbringing, values family, and believes that hard work and education are essential for getting ahead (Administration, n.d. President). The job of the President is to act as the head of state and government of the United States. He is the commander-in-chief of the United States Armed F |

Joyce Carol Oates and Coming of AgeJoyce Carol Oates's "Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?" takes place in the early 1960's and tells the tale of fifteen year old Connie who is stalked and evidently abducted by a man who calls himself Arnold Friend. The short story is based on a true story however in this retelling the open ending allows readers' to interpret the meaning individually. One theme out of several in the book is clearly "initiation" as Connie is an innocent teenager on the cusp of becoming an adult who is seduced by way of her own vanity. Separating from and rebelling against parental authority is part of the passage from girl to woman in our culture. While endeavoring to create an identity as an adult Connie adopts a mature image when out with her girlfriends. Connie faces some tough decisions regarding her stalker, Arthur Friend, and goes through a kind of transformation, which in this case is both moral and sexual. This essay will look at the "coming of age" theme as it pl |

Flaws in the American Education SystemThere are many different things wrong with education. Some problems seem like they can't be fixed and that people argue over them all the time. Everyone wonders how things would be if these problems would be fixed. I think that the most important problems in education now would be "Is online learning as good as face to face learning?", "How necessary is a college education?", and "Should schools be allowed to use corporal punishment?" I think with these questions answered and discussed thoroughly, education, the way students act and behave, and schools everywhere would change. Corporal punishment is argued over around the world, daily. The main question on corporal punishment is this, "Should teachers be allowed to use corporal punishment on their students?" Well here's the hard part. No one can agree on one single answer for this question. Even A supreme court case was judged over corporal punishment (Ingraham v. Wright 1977). http://www.edweek |

Roles of Women in OthelloIn the play "Othello," Shakespeare presents us with another male dominated society where women are inferior. Desdemona, Emilia, and Bianca are rejected by their partners, but love them completely and unselfishly. All three women are in unbalanced relationships, feeling more for their self-centered men who appear unable to reciprocate. Nevertheless, these women display genuine feelings toward each other unlike any of the male-male friendships. Desdemona and Emilia are both married to career military soldiers. Newly wedded Desdemona is inexperienced (innocent) in the "real world" despite being raised by a prominent Venetian Senator. In contrast, Emilia appears to have been married for some time. She is knowledgeable to the ways of a soldier, yet only believes a portion of what her husband tells her. Although Emilia has been Desdemona's attendant since the play's start (maybe much earlier), we really don't get an intimate view of their relationship until Act 4, Scene 3. During this sce |

The Great American Government ConspiracyOn September 11, 2001 terrorists attacked the citizens of the United States of America. Approximately forty-five days later on October 26, 2001, the Bush administration responded by passing the USA PATRIOT Act, which is short for "United and Strengthening America by Providing Appropriate Tools to Intercept and Obstruct Terrorism." The policy's scope was not just foreign; it was also domestic. The following year, the Bush administration added an entirely new cabinet established as the "United States Department of Homeland Security." This policy went effective on November 25, 2002. Both USA PATRIOT Act and the Homeland security act were direct responses to the atrocities that happened that dreadful day on September 11, 2001. In policy analysis it's wise to understand the reason why a policy is constructed. When dissecting a policies purpose it's prudent to understand the actors in a policy; and who's benefiting fiscally or not from a newly formed policy. In the USA PATRIOT Act, the mil |

Themes of Death in The Things They CarriedIn the novel "The Things They Carried," the theme of death shows up multiple times when the author, Tim O'Brien, talks about his experience in the Vietnam War. Death is displayed when O'Brien discusses the man he killed, when he witnesses his first death in Vietnam and about the death of his school love, Linda. He explains to the readers how he is able to come to terms with death and his own ways of how he handles it along with understanding it. The book seemed to be written backwards because the last chapter, "The Lives of the Dead," is where O'Brien decided to talk about his first experience with death. In this chapter he talks about the true love he had for this girl named Linda, and after their first date he tells us how she was sick and passed away from a brain tumor. Linda is his love during elementary school so when he explains his thoughts and experiences they are portrayed as the fourth grader, Timmy. With the death of Linda, O'Brien used his dreams as a way of h |

The Book of Daniel and RevelationThe book of Daniel and the Revelation are counterparts of each other. They should be studied together as to get the whole picture of God's redemptive plan, the world's history, the future of the world, God's victory over evil at the end of the world, and a glimpse into the new heaven and the new earth. Even if these two books are different, many parts of the books talk about the same event of world's history. In this essay, I will show how the book of Daniel is related to Revelation and then how John uses the imagery of Daniel. First of all, let us look at the introduction to the books of Daniel and Revelation. The word "Daniel" means "God is my Judge." Daniel was believed to be the author of the book as he claimed to write it (12:4) and he also used the autobiographical first person from 7:2 onward. The majority of scholars hold a view that this book was written in late sixth-century B.C. while few believed it was written in second-century B.C in the time of Maccabees (Ne |

Plant Physiology - Extended Experimental InvestigationStage 1 – Background Theory Context The growth rates of plants vary based on several factors, one being environmental which includes but is not limited to the plant's surroundings (i.e. temperature, atmospheric conditions), biotic and abiotic factors of the plant, soil in which it is grown, and radiation energy through means of photosynthesis. (Virulian's Encyclopaedia 1st edition, 1993, pp 48) For this task it is required that extensive investigation and research is done to find the effect of sodium chloride on plants. Theoretical Overview While houseplants are commonly grown for decorative purposes, they are so much more. Even though plants seem basic, they serve an important role in our ecosystem; they are "the backbone of all life on Earth and an essential resource for the human well-being" (BCGI, 2007) and also vital for animals. All living organisms on Earth are made of cells and plants are no different. All life on Earth is distinguished into two main groups, p |

I have spent twelve years of my life in three different boroughs of New York City, but one of the many factors that makes me a different case is the fact that I spent the remaining six years of my life in the capital of Nigeria, Abuja. Curriculum Development in High SchoolEducation is extremely important in today's society if one wishes to be successful, both individually and within a community. Courses offered by schools teach students the knowledge and skills needed to succeed outside of the school setting. Thus, a school district's curriculum is extremely important. Administrators must strive to create a solid curriculum that benefits the students and prepares them for life after their high school years. In order to achieve this objective, administrators must analyze their curriculum to make sure it meets those goals. Every school district has a curriculum review process for the analysis of their curriculum. This process consists of four steps: initiating curriculum analysis, developing a new curriculum, steps for initiating the new curriculum, and follow-up procedures once the new curriculum is in place. Core course curriculum revision and physical education curriculum revision are complex processes. There is no nationwide blueprint on how a school |

Analysis of The Outcasts of Poker Flat"The Outcasts of Poker Flat" is a masterpiece short story by Francis Bret Harte. The story is drawn with ordinary images, but it contains a lot of hidden feelings and inner thoughts through the characters' actions. John Oakhurst is a gambler who often wins money in playing cards with people in Poker Flat. In the beginning of the story, the narrator describes Mr. Oakhurst as if he commits a crime and he is worthy to receive a punishment: exile. However, throughout the story, Mr. Oakhurst demonstrates that he is completely different than his first appearance. Everyone in Poker Flat judges him as a cheating gambler, but it turns out that he is a man of strength. He proves how brave, kind, and compassionate he is, which cannot compare to anyone within the outcasts. The opening pages are filled with language that seems too grand for the events. Oakhurst notices that there is a change in the "moral atmosphere" of the town. There is a "Sabbath lull" in a commun |
