Poems on Childhood by William Blake

Select any one text from the first semester set texts and write an essay about it that examines how that text relates to any one of the issues that the class is exploring. These issues might include questions of period, genre, national tradition, the nature of childhood, education, history, gender, literary form, text and illustration, and so on (see Class Description). William Blake's Songs of Innocence and of Experience (1789, 1794) extensively explores the concept of childhood. Often the concept explored is the Romantic vision of childhood, yet this is not always the case. It is therefore possible to suggest that the Songs of Innocence and of Experience presents polarized depictions of childhood. Consequently, two poems from the Songs of Innocence and of Experience will be compared and contrasted to answer the question of how the text relates to the Romantic concept of childhood. In Blake's Songs of Innocence, "Laughing Song" could be regarded as a poem that directly exp

The Unreliability of News Media

In this essay, I will address an interview conducted by CNN's crossfire of John Stewart. I will explain his true motive for arguing, and what the media missed about his argument. I will provide an understanding as to why the media often can be hard to trust and also define what "news media" really is. Furthermore, I will argue why it is important to be media literate and what it means to actually know real news, and also provide reasons why it is important to know such things when watching the news. Knowing how to interpret what real news is essential for one because the news can be misleading with what they report. The article's that indicted John Stewart with a "win" missed the point because it was in his best interest to motivate the show to perform their journalistic duty as a real time news outlet for American citizens. If you the audience agree that news does not always provide real time content and also understand that most news outlets report for headlines

Lintel of Hatshepsut and Thutmosis III

When visiting the Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology, the Upper Egyptian Gallery on the third floor was the first gallery I chose to explore. It came to no surprise to me that throughout the visit of the different galleries I kept wanting to go back the Egyptian gallery. While the other galleries were intricate and artistically advanced, I find the Egyptians and their process of preparing their dead for the afterlife the most fascinating especially for the time period in which things were made. Specifically, I've been drawn to Hatshepsut as I'm inspired by her being one of the first great women in history that we might have ever had in the world. Her rein lasted approximately twenty-one years. In theory, Thutmose III controlled the land, but Hatshepsut governed as regent. At some point between Thutmose's reign (1), she assumed the kingship herself. The lintel of Hatshepsut and Thermoses III was one of the first items in the Egyptian exhibit. It was originally part of Hatshepsut's te

The Drone Threat in America

Imagine one day you are sitting in your house relaxing after a long day of work. The kids are upstairs doing their homework and you can smell dinner being prepared in the other room. Suddenly, you are thrown from your chair onto the coffee table and knocked unconscious, only to wake up in the hospital a week later just to learn that your family and your home have been destroyed. Stories like this are innocent human's experiences in Pakistan and many other countries in the Middle East. A deadly missile fired by an unmanned aircraft, controlled by a pilot sitting on United States soil, right into your kitchen. These unmanned aircraft are better known as drones by the media. Drones, as well as the missiles propelled from them, perform highly destructive missions with very little regard for human life. In my opinion, the use of drones should not be allowed as an official option for the president to use at his discretion to rid of American enemies. The term "enemies" is a very br

Common Core Curriculum Standards

In a world where everything is changing, the education system is no stranger to the shift in new standards and different guidelines. The New Jersey Common Core Curriculum Standards pose a major problem in today's education world. Teachers aren't sure how to use the standards correctly nor do they fully understand them. Even though there are countless professional workshops that can help teachers with the common core standards, the state (New Jersey) seems to be coming up short with test scores and the production of college ready students. There are both positive and negative views on these fairly new standards. They theory behind this new way of teaching show promising results, but many critics believe they were "based on ideal situations/aspirations in education by people who have funding and for students who already are ahead of the learning curve." In other words, the standards were created without every child in mind. Like everything in this world, small businesses and major

The Taking of Human Rights

An English woman, referred to as Stacy, was forced by her boyfriend into prostitution. She was incessantly physically abused and sexually assaulted. Stacy "genuinely felt trapped," [With] no value other than to make money for somebody else", working as his slave (London Woman Shares 1). This tragedy, unfortunately, is one of many cases of denied human rights against a certain people. In addition to the infringement of women's human rights, the Jewish people have also had their rights neglected. Along with severe torture and discrimination towards the Judaists, by 1945, two out of every three European Jews had been killed in the Holocaust (The Holocaust 1). Their restriction from a life of freedom violated their human rights. Researchers at University of Cincinnati Hospital kept 16 mentally disabled patients in refrigerated cabinets for 120 hours at 30 degrees Fahrenheit (Human Experiments 1). Therefore, they took advantage of them and stripped them of their basic human rights

Leaving Home to Find Home

As an independent young man, I am able to locate the understanding of my own home. Today I live on my own, go to school full-time, and work part-time. Once I moved out of my parent's house, I expected it to be hard since there are no more individuals to be dependent on anymore since it is my time to be responsible for now on. Firstly, during the process of finding my own understanding of home, I have come to understand the transitioning between different levels of responsibilities can be very difficult and overwhelming. Secondly, thinking back to the days I confidently said to my parent's which I could not wait until I moved out on my own and achieve what ever I wanted eventually caused me to forget about considering all the factors independent living. Consequently, I found myself not fully happy with my decision to move out of my parent's house at the age of 18. For example, I had imagined living on my own to be less complex and not as much hard work since I would have roommates who w

Setting in Hills Like White Elephants

A setting is what makes most short stories come to life and in the short story, "Hills Like White Elephants," the setting is portrayed in a technique that enhances the reader's understanding of the story. Hemingway cleverly used the setting as a "cheat," informing the reader of what is actually taking place in the story. Throughout the entire writing not once will you hear the word abortion. However, the whole short story is based on a girl deciding to get an abortion. The narrator more or less used the setting to describe the conflict that was arising between the American man and the girl, named Jue. The beauty and dimness of the scenery, the train station, and the hills looking like white elephants to the girl are all major pieces of setting th

Benefits of the ASEAN Investment Agreement

"A community united with a highly competitive single market and production." (Solstad, 2013) This statement is the vision of every ASEAN leaders in the Southeast Asian Region. They envision a region of equitable and a fully integrated economy that can compete in the global arena. The ASEAN is the most elaborate and longstanding arrangement promoting economic integration in Asia yet it is far less institutionalized than the European Union (EU). As a response to the increasing global competition, the ASEAN leaders sought to enhance their economies by the formation of an agreement. Thus, with its comprehensive, balanced, and improved features they formed the ASEAN Comprehensive Investment Agreement (ACIA). ACIA is an ASEAN's instrument to create a free and open investment regime/environment in the context of an integrated economic community and ASEAN's response to increase global competition and enhance the attractiveness of ASEAN as a single investment destination. The ASEAN Comprehensive Investment Agreement, or simply known as ACIA

Lions and Excellent Militarists

Throughout human history, there have been many excellent leaders around the globe. According to Alexander the Great, who is considered one of the greatest military geniuses of all times, "I am not afraid of an army of lions led by a sheep; I am afraid of an army of sheep led by a lion" (n.d.). He stated the great importance of an outstanding leader. A decent leader can make significant difference of an army, a war, or even the whole world. Nevertheless, among all these great leaders, Napoleon Bonaparte and Adolf Hitler were just as essential as the leader lions of an army. Many people might think that they are completely different in many perspectives. However, they both have features in common, especially their personalities, military talents, and loyal generals. What most wonderful militarists had in common is that they almost all had impressive goals, and it was their great ambitions that gave them the desire and motivation to achieve their dreams. So did Napoleon and Hit

Literature and Connecting with Nature

"But when the sun was getting low and everything seemed most bewildering and discouraging, I found beautiful Calypso on the mossy bank of a stream, growing not in the ground but on a bed of yellow mosses in which its small white bulb had found a soft nest and from which its one leaf and one flower sprung." Nature is beautiful and keeps life worth living. John Muir and William Wordsworth were true aficionados of nature. Their stories "The Calypso Borealis" and "I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud" are great examples of their love and appreciation for nature. The powerful sentiment within the unique voice and personalities of the two authors not only expressed their unique relationships with nature, it allowed the reader to connect with the feelings of the author both visually and mentally. When first read ,these two pieces of literature captivate you in the beautifully descriptive world the author molds for you. In th

Guilt and Sorrow in Medea

Commonly regarded as Euripides' greatest work, Medea is a powerful play of impassioned love turned into furious hate. Shown by Medea's brutal nature, it is clear that her revenge makes her a far more morally guilty character than Jason because of the extremely vicious nature of her crimes; however in saying this it does not mean that Jason is not partly guilty. This is evident through the key factors that Jason tried his hardest to work it out with Medea but could not succeed, Medea's thirst for brutal revenge on her husband and the ability that Medea has to accept her plan and be completely okay with it. Euripides tries to make Medea as close to an actual woman as possible, and to show her fiery lust for vengeance in uncovered action with nothing to dull its effect. The audience is witness to a hideous passion and cannot be certain whether Euripides approves of it or condemns it. Many themes shine through in the play Medea including pride, exile and the out

Gun Control, the NRA and the Second Amendment

Statement of the Problem Ever since the United States Constitution was written along with the Bill of Rights, people have questioned the second amendment, "The right to keep and bear arms." This topic has been discussed over and over again not only by the people, but also by the courts system. This topic means something to me because I am a gun holder myself who loves to go hunting. Having gun rights does not mean we have the right to go around committing crimes with firearms. Guns are expected to be used in lawful purposes. Wretchedly, there are many people that think we need gun control more than our gun rights. These are the people that believe you are not responsible enough to have and own a gun. They would rather see you as a victim, than see you associated with a firearm. They want to adjust your civil rights as if they were privileges, which is wrong. There are also people that don't support the second amendment. I suggest you look closely at these individuals as well.

My Academic Failures

My Academic Failures Overconfident About My Scores During the preparation stage of my middle school entrance exams, I was too confident about my academic performance based on the fact that I was always good at exams before. When everyone else was trying their best to acquire higher marks, I chose to sit around and believed that my foundation was solid enough to handle the exam. The results turned out to be dissatisfactory since I missed lots of important point. I learned a lesson from this failure that I should never walk on air for my past success, instead, face all the challenges in life with a right attitude and never stop seeking better. The only key to success is constantly improving, enriching and challenging myself. Lacking Time Management Skills and Making Excuses When I was in grade 10, I was on a stage that I had to cope with both my school work and stu

Career Goal Narrative

Everybody needs a job when they get old enough to have to support themselves. I am interested in graphic design as a future career. Graphic designers combine art and technology to develop graphics for certain product illustrations, logos, and websites. A few things I am interested in are television commercials, magazine advertisements, and web design. The time that I first became interested in this career area was when I was younger. It was around the end of my sophomore year in high school when I was talking to my dad in my living room. He said I should start thinking about what I wanted to do after high school. A day or two went by and then I decided I am very good at art, and I love to work with computers. Afterwards, he suggested that I help my mom come up with the new logo for my school, since she was the one who designed it. During the interaction between my mom and I, we came to the conclusion that I should do graphi

Ode to a Grecian Urn by John Keats

When analyzing the poem "Ode on a Grecian Urn," I wondered what was trying to be said about the urn. The poem uses many of the elements. It uses a very formal diction, has a closed form, and it uses the images that are on the urn to describe what the urn looks like. The author, John Keats, uses formal diction when writing the poem. He uses many of the words from the old english language. Some examples are using "thou" instead of "the" or using "ye" instead of "you." The use of the old english makes the poem sound formal. The poem is a fixed form. An ode is a long lyrical poem that is formal and serious. When writing about the urn it is a serious item because

Poem - Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening

American Poet Robert Frost's well-known poem, "Stopping by Woods in the Snowy Evening," relates the story of man riding alone in the wood in a horse-drawn sleigh on a snowy evening as he reflects on his life. He rests a moment to take in the silent solitude, except for the sound of the wind and beauty of nature. Dendinger, in his extensive commentary on Frost, views him as a descriptive natural poet who calmly surveys and sweetly portrays and innocent pastoral world (19). Moreover, he illustrates the strong visual imagery in line seven, such as the frigid winter scene and the frozen lake. At first reading, on the surface the poem's message is simply a man's journey in the countryside. However, the speaker's deeper thoughts are triggered when he questions his life's purpose, including his future expectations and obligations to society. He is tempted to remain in this rural environment but, in the end, decides to move on. The theme's significance is clear, which is, the implicit epiphany or sudden realization that his life is half over and lacks meaning; the conflict is to decide whether to remain in the woods or re-enter the

Women and Millennium Development Goals

The Millennium Development Goals are eight goals with realistic targets and clear deadlines for improving the lives of the world's poorest people. To meet these goals and eradicate poverty, leaders of 189 countries signed the historic Millennium Declaration (MD) at the United Nations Millennium Summit which occurred in 2000. Each goal has specific targets and dates for achieving those targets to accelerate progress and any reduction of poverty is also considered a success. These goals are being assessed by indicators to show the progress towards the goals through the indicators of enrollment in education for girls, health stability and the involvement in the community such as having a voice. The Countries I will be focusing on will be Nigeria, Ethiopia and India and assessing the progress towards reaching these goals. Education enrollment, health stability and the involvement in communities measure influence the empowerment of women and in order to achieve that finance minsters ha

The Rules of Plea Bargaining

While most Americans believe that the justice system is comparable to CSI, Criminal Minds, and Law and Order, the real American justice system does not work in such a fashion. As one may know, on these television shows, most cases get solved and are brought to justice through a court trial. However, in reality most cases are solved or ended in a plea bargain. Plea bargaining in the United States is one of the most controversial issues due to the fact that the practice of plea bargaining is necessary because of the United States high crime rates, and insufficient facilities and personnel to try all cases. This essay will discuss the reasons people accept plea bargains, courtroom workgroup role and incentives in plea bargaining, and the impact of race on plea bargaining. What is plea bargaining? Plea bargaining, in the American justice system is "the process of prosecutors negotiating with criminal defendants to secure a guilty plea, the bargain is between the defendant and the pro

Impacts of the Cuban Revolution

The Cuban Revolution began in 1952. It all began when the army Sergeant Fulgencio Batista decided to seized power during the current presidential election. Sergeant Batista was eager to once again be president of Cuba. He had first been president during 1940-1944 and once again ran for president in 1952. Sergeant Batista was devastated when it came to his attention that he would definitely loose the election. Sergeant Batista and his followers took the situation into their own hands and made it their mission to seized power in Cuba before the elections. At this point the beginning of the Cuban revolution began. Of course due to the outbreak of Sergeant Batista and his men the elections were immediately cancelled. The citizens of Cuba could not believe the actions demonstrated by a former president and Sergeant. Sergeant Batista his power grab reminded the people of Cuba that even though they had been living for years in their confusing dysfunctional government that it was still a Demo

Populist Leaders in Latin America

In Latin America, government has always been very complicated in regards to selecting its leaders. Hundreds of years before World War II the election of populist leaders was very common. The situation was usually initiated when the elected member began to turn to corruption and slowly evolving into a dictator. The only way to prevent the situation from escalating, somebody had to stand up to the government and represent the people in order to reclaim their rights. This person would more times than not become a political prisoner. Upon their release they would be completely supported by all of the common people and help them to reach elections. Unfortunately after a short period of time in office they would slowly return to the previous presidential methods in order to gain more power. Many times elections consisting of populist leaders turn out great in the beginning, however over time that illusion begins to fade. The rule of populist leaders such as Juan Perón, and Getúlio Vargas a

The Path to Being Promoted

Asking for a promotion from your boss can be one of the most stressful situations you will come across in your job. Fearing that you will look like you are sounding too desperate to your boss, and making it seem like you aren't focused on doing your best can trigger unnecessary mistakes. However, if you take the right approach, you can change the way you look toward your boss, and not make yourself feel so undervalued. When asking for a promotion, don't ask for too much at once. Many people ask for a promotion, raise, and even better privileges all at one time. This can lead your boss into thinking you are greedy, and will lower your chance of getting a promotion. Instead, while you are awaiting your promotion, casually bring up the thing

Michael Jackson - Rise and Fall of a Pop Icon

Michael Jackson was a well-revered pop singing sensation of the late 60s through the early 2000s. He was a musician, a dancer, and one of the most influential entertainers of all time. Michael was an icon of pop culture specifically for his own style of fashion and dance moves. He became an official part of the music industry at the young age of 7, and made his debut alongside his brothers in the band the Jackson 5. From his success in the Jackson 5 and as a solo artist, many issues arose, but is still one of the most iconic artists to this day. Michael began his career at the age of 5 as the lead singer for the family band the Jackson 5, formed in 1964. In the beginning years, the siblings played local bars and clubs in Indiana in attempt to build a strong following; they were not officiated with any record labels (The Bio History of Michael Joseph Jackson). Behind the scenes, the siblings' father, Joseph Jackson, pushed his sons to succeed, not with the best intentions. He was repor

The Devil and Daniel Webster and Tom Walker

The time of rising romanticism used in literature soon branched out into a new form of art; a faustian legend. A faustian legends originated from the german author scholar who found dissatisfied with his life, he created a pact with the devil in order to turn in his life around at the cost of his soul. The two famous writings, "The Devil and Daniel Webster," written by Stephen Vincent Bennet and "The Devil and Tom Walker", written by Washington Irving, share a common base story in which a poor man not content with his current life state creates a deal with the devil, but although this is shared between the two novels there are multiple differences in each novel, through presentation of the devil to the motives and intent of the foolish man Before the appearance of the Devil, in both stories the men were in the same predicament of being poor and struggling through their daily lives, despising those who lived the lives they wished they too had. Although they shared this common trait in the story of Tom Walker, he was greedy and his motives were all self center

Unordinary Ordinary Teachers

How most of ordinary people in various nations and from every stratum of society come to act in a concrete situation such as the Milgram experiment, -which its first series was done by Stanley Milgram in 1961-are quite similar to each other. How church was possibly able to dominate the power over ordinary people, demanding them orders of the God and how people as absolute followers would simply take action of the given celestial task, no matter how hard or harsh the tasks were, is relatively equivalent to the situation that Milgram had provided for his subjects in his psychological experiment. In concrete situations where followers are only meant to carry out only the given tasks, the privilege of looking back and re-thinking about the command is somewhat automatically taken from the person, and what can be seen is a range between thoroughly being possessed by the authority (obedience) and behaving with defiance. As Milgram asserts, obedience is to become an instrument to carry out an
