The Road to a New Reality

The capability to produce an authentic experience is closing in fast. In today's contemporary art everything seems to have been said and done - a common cliche experience, which does not excite, nor vex, the soul for the common man. Intimidation arises, as the road towards genuine intimacy in contemporary art would no longer be present but would rather appear as mere memory. It is this experience thus, which transforms the person to undergo a momentary escape into a new reality, a greater unreality. The paradox of creating an unreality with reality is an intriguing notion of being able to fabricate our own experiences with our already known surroundings. An unreality is one where fabrication for a new realm of reality comes forward by appointing a new meaning to something we already have seen and done myriad of times and would otherwise be incapable of granting us of that experience. Out of context one reality might be meaningless but a combination of objects, whether it be a picture of a cliche motel room and western landscapes, one could alternate it into a new meaning. Could we thus experience a new reality with what we have already seen? Does that mean we are

Integrated Marketing Communications - 2010 Census

According to Shultz and Schultz (1998), Integrated Marketing Communications (IMC) refers to a strategic communication process including various communication development phases such as planning, developing, execution, and evaluation to effectively deliver coordinated, measurable, and convincing communication messages to target populations over time. Fro enhancing persuasive effects, recent IMC strategies aims to avoid duplicate messages, generate an synergy among promotional tools, and maximize the effectiveness of their communication programs. Given the importance of integration of constructing communication stra

Chemical Compound - Polychlorinated Biphenyl

Polychlorinated Biphenyls are manmade organic chemical compounds. They are synthetic chlorinated hydrocarbons consisting of Carbon, Hydrogen and Chlorine atoms. PCBs have a lot of commercial and industrial applications; however their production was banned in 1979, due to their toxicity levels and health risks. Polychlorinated Biphenyls have a wide range of uses due to their desirable chemical properties. PCBs were used as coolants, plasticizers, hydraulic fluids, fluorescent light ballasts, etc. PCBs in addition took part in transformers and capacitors, oil-based paint, carbonless copy paper, cabal and thermal insulation; they also appear in electrical equipment and devices such as switches and voltage regulators (EPA). PCBs have a range of properties that vary slightly from type to type, usually PCBs are a very stable and rather inert compounds owed to their chemical make-up and structure. PCBs are non-flammable and have high electrical resistance; they are also very heat resistant an

The Lesson by Toni Cade Bambara

Conflict is often an important part of a short story and this is very true for "The Lesson," by Toni Cade Bambara. There are so many conflicts, big and small, in this short story but there are two that really can be seen as the main conflicts. The easiest to point out are the many conflicts that revolve around Miss Moore. The clash between Miss Moore and Sylvia as well as the conflict between Miss Moore and the children all together are two big battles we see in this story. When we are first introduced to Miss Moore the reader is immediately made to believe that she will be the root of all conflicts and we further learn that many of the problems do indeed actually revolve around Miss Moore. First and foremost, the main com

US Steel Corporations and J.F. Kennedy

United States Steel Corporations had developed to become such gigantic industries by 1962, that the welfare of the country they operated in had much influence by their actions. Thus being so, nineteen-sixty-two complicated matters further by being an era in the midst of a recession. Therefore when steel companies raised prices by 3.5 percent or 6 dollars more a ton on April 10, 1962, the potential ramifications on the country demanded for a call of action to be made or the U.S. would sink further into turmoil. Well not a day was wasted though as on April 11, 1962 President John F. Kennedy returned with a fierce whiplash against the steel companies who lacked "...a higher sense of business responsibility for the welfare of their country." Within President Kennedy's arsen

Methodology of Nakikiugaling Pagmamasid

Introduction With the development of Filipino psychology, more and more research methodologies are also developing for the purpose of data gathering, and experimentation while adapting to the culture of Filipinos. One of these methodologies is called nakikiugaling pagmamasid. This methodology was coined by Bennagen (1985) to describe his version of participant observation that he used in studying the Agtas of Isabel in the northern Philippines. He said Pagmamasid here means observation and nakikiugali means to adopt in the ways of a particular group. He added that pakikiugali here does not only include empirical behavior, but also their mental behavior: "It is important that one embraces not just the external ways, but becomes one in thought as well-have the readiness of the mind to understand them" (Bennagen, 1985 ). To test the effectiveness of this methodology, the researchers observed a local guitar–making group in Lapu-Lapu City through the use of nakikiugaling p

Ancient Temples and the Ramayana

India, Cambodia, and Indonesia are home to some of the most religiously influential megalithic structures of ancient Southeast Asia. These monuments stand before us in the present as faint remnants of the ancient civilizations that aspired to build towards the heavens. Each of the Hindu temples discussed in the coming pages were chosen because, while they were separated by hundreds of years and thousands of miles, each of the societies played a pivotal role in perpetuating the telling of the Hindu epic; the Ramayana as they observed in their own time. Many of the world's most elaborately adorned temples reside in South and Southeast Asia, paying homage to the traditional Hindu architecture of ancient times. The three temples of Angkor Wat, Prambanan, and Sri Ranganathar Swamy, located in the nations of Cambodia, Indonesia, and India act as guardians, preserving the cultural importance and unique subjectivity of the Hindu epic, the Ramayana as it was seen by the civilizations that cam

Business Analysis - Apple Computers

One of the most innovative and exciting fields in our current society is the PC industry. In the last thirty years, the computer industry has developed at an astounding rate-nearly two out of three people over the age of 18 in the US either own or have access to a computer on a regular basis. This incredible invention, however, is the result of inauspicious beginnings and inept primary marketing by one of the most successful manufacturers of personal computers-Apple. Despite disastrous losses in the 80s and 90s to their main competitor, IBM, Apple recently re-vamped the entire company-focusing on marketing and product development--and introduced the iMac in 1998-the most successful personal computer launch ever. Despite this success, the rapid rate of development within the computer industry indicates that Apple must analyze their previous marketing techniques in order to maintain the high level of success achieved in the late twentieth century. The PC was invented on April Fool's Day

Women's Rights Under the Taliban

If most women have equal rights around the world, why must Afghan women have to go through so much to live their lives? Why is it so different for them? There are so many Afghan women that are either punished or killed every day by the Taliban. The way that Afghan women are forced to live is a way that no woman should ever live no matter where she is from. The Taliban, an extreme religious group, controlled women's everyday lives, often in a harsh way and enforced strict laws with very harsh consequences. The Taliban, which is the plural form of Talib, is a Pashto word for students of Islam or seekers of knowledge. An alternate spelling of the word is "Taleban". Priests trained at madrasahs in Pakistan began to call themselves the Taliban when they started a revolt against the Afghan government in 1996 ("Terrorism Glossary"). Madrasahs are basically buildings or groups of buildings used to teach people Islamic theology and religious law. These typically include a m

Abraham Lincoln - Slavery and Race

The life of Abraham Lincoln can be linked with the development of the question on whether the institution of slavery could grow with the nation or not. An interrelated issue that was linked to this issue was the issue of race. Examining Lincoln's attitude toward slavery also opens up political and cultural contentions at large in the American nation. Abraham Lincoln is often referred to as the Great Emancipator, yet, he did not publicly call for the emancipation throughout his entire life. He claimed to be "anti-slavery" in the hope that the expansion of slavery would be stopped, but would also adhere to the Constitution as the people have the right to property and opponents would argue that slaves are property. From 1837, when Lincoln first attacked slavery as bad politics, his thoughts evolved from thinking that slavery would eventually die out by compromising that southern states could have its slaves without expanding, to 1854, when the Kansas-Nebraska Act was passed, as

The Bar Code Tattoo by Suzanne Wyen

A barcode is a system of inventory control and price checking that was designed to increase industrial efficiency and worker productivity. The use of the barcode tattoo in The Bar Code Tattoo is used to organize people into a genetic hierarchy. This book serves as a warning, that if we are not careful, we are all in danger of being manipulated. I am here to talk to you about peer pressure and conformity and how effective my book The Bar Code Tattoo by Suzanne Wyen explored these issues. It was an effective in depth example of peer pressure and conformity which I will demonstrate through examples from the book. The book takes place in the year 2025 where the new in thing is to get the barcode tattoo on your 17th birthday. The barcode contains all of your personal information: it is your driver's license, health card, social insurance number and your genetic code which will be used to determine what kind of life you live or whether you live at all. "Everybody's getting it. It will

Solutions to Water Pollution

Water is life, with about 70% of the earth is covering with water. Over the last few years, water pollution has increased dramatically, threatening life on earth. Water pollution is "the presence in water of harmful or objectionable material in sufficient quantity to measurably degrade water". Pollution comes in many forms; air, water, soil, noise, radioactive, thermal, light and visual pollution. Those pollutants are very dangerous to the environment. There are many forms of water pollution; biological pollution, oxygen, nutrients and chemical. Water pollution happens because of the industrial waste, sewage waste and water waste, mining activities, marine dumping, accidental oil leakage, burning of fossil fuels, chemical fertilizers and pesticides, leakage from sewer lines, global warming, radioactive waste, urban development, leakage from the landfills, animal waste and underground storage leakage. Water pollution effects; human health, contaminated drinking water, mercury

The Visceral Leishmaniasis Epidemic

Visceral Leishmaniasis (VL) is one of the deadliest epidemics in human history but is also one of the least recognized and reported. It is classified as Neglected Tropical Disease (NTD), mainly targeting children, young adults, women and the poorest community of developing nations. Visceral Leishmaniasis is one type of Leishmaniasis that is the most severe form of the illness and if left untreated is fetal. Despite enormous efforts, it has proved difficult to predict the exact scale of the impact of the Leishmaniasis on public health, since many cases go unreported or misdiagnosed. It is estimated that approximately 12 million people are currently infected and a further 367 million are at risk of acquiring Leishmaniasis in 88 countries, 72 of which are developing countries and 13 of them are among the least developed in the world. More than 500,000 VL cases are reported yearly and ninety percent of these cases occur in India, Nepal, Sudan, Bangladesh and Brazil, heavily concentrated

The Impact of Early Australian Literature

Early Australian literature has played a significant part in developing several beliefs and values that Australians consider important today. Poetry and ballads written by Banjo Patterson and Henry Lawson focus a great deal on the bush, which is now an iconic Australian trait. Australians believe in mateship and a "fair go." These values originated from convicts and early colonialists who struggled against a harsh and unfamiliar land and often unfair authority. Australia's famous bushranger Ned Kelly protested against the poverty and injustice of a British class system. This weakened the hero's fight for 'justice and freedom' has been embraced as part of the national culture and inspired many books and movies. On the goldfields of the mid-1850s, diggers were portrayed in stories and songs as heroes who embraced democracy. The Eureka Stockade, where Victorian miners struggled with an authoritarian licensing system, came to symbolize a triumph of social equality. Later, during World War I, the courageous ANZAC soldiers who served in Gallipoli gave new meaning to the expression 'tough Aussie'. E

Environmental Crisis - Oil Spills

There are many types of environmental issues in the world, but one that leads the way is the issue of oils spills. An oil spill is when major amounts of oil is dumped into the water of anything ranging from lakes to oceans. Oil spills are the result of people being careless, equipment breaking down, natural disasters or it can even be caused by a war going on. Many oil spills are the result of carelessness causing thousands of tonnes of oil being dropped down into the ocean or waters affecting marine life as well as wildlife. This environmental issue can affect any part of the world because of how oil travels along the waters. This environmental issue is affecting humans, wildlife, and marine life. Oil can be evaporated into the air causing oil to be inhaled causing nausea, vomiting, and headaches which is really bad for human health. Oil contains a chemical called petroleum hydrocarbons that causes irritation to the skin and airway, over long periods of time many of the chemicals from oils are linked to cancer. Oil spills also affect the environment. Since oil usually floats it kills sea birds the most in greater numbers

Standing Up to Censorship

Censorship, or the suppression of words, images, or bad ideas that are "offensive," happens whenever someone succeed in imposing their personal, political, or moral values on others. Censorship is like poison gas: a powerful weapon that can harm you when the wind shifts. ("Censorship - Spotlight on Film, American Civil Liberties Union,") Censorship is most commonly used for controlling language obscenities, pornography, racial speeches, to promote or restrict political or religious views or even to protect national security of a country. Censorship In media is unneeded because it is the right of the people to decide what they want or do not want to expose themselves or their children to specific media. In itself, censorship could be considered unconstitutional; the first amendment prohibits "the making of any law abridging to freedom of speech and infringing on the freedom of press."(U.S. Const. amend. I.) Censorship does this by not allowing TV or radio stations to air specific content due to language, violence, or nudity. Though some things may not be suitable fo

Fire - Mysterious and Angelic

We all know that fire is dangerous, right? It's hot, it burns, and it can spread quickly. People only look at fire as being a destructive element of nature. Now, when fire is misused, it will indeed cause harm to you and/or the surrounding area. This is why fire safety is a must. Overlook all of the house fires and cataclysmic explosions. Mankind uses fire every day; therefore, it's one of the most important tools we have on planet earth. Fire is known to be a discovery of the Early Stone Age. The first evidence of a controlled fire was traced all the way back to Gesher Benot Ya'agov, a site in Israel more than 790,000 years ago. Fire is angelic because it is important in many religions, it helps us every day, and is important to maintain the cycles of ecosystems. Fire seems scary and monstrous, but in reality, it is mysterious and angelic. To see the angelic side of fire, first you have to know what fire is. Is fire matter? No, fire is just a visible, tangible side effect of matter

Abortion - The Adoption Option

An abortion can be defined as the ending of a pregnancy so that it does not result in the birth of a child which is also called "termination of pregnancy." There are several reasons why women may choose to have abortions. Some of these reasons are; they were not ready for the commitment that is required in raising a child, becoming pregnant from been raped or the experience of incest, financial instability where the individual believes will prevent them from being able to support the child properly when it is born and teenage pregnancy; not mature physically, mentally and emotionally and psychologically to deal with a baby. Some women although they maybe mature and financial secure if become pregnant will choose to have an abortion because they believe that having a baby will 'tie them down.' It would therefore prevent them from being able to do things that they would like, go places they would like to go and subsequently affect their freedom, hence they were not ready t

Strength, Luck and Skill - The Old Man and the Sea

"The Old Man and the Sea," by Ernest Hemingway is a novel settle in Cuba, and is centered on an old fisherman, Santiago, who hasn't caught a single fish in eighty four days. He spends his days in the sea along with a boy named Manolin who helps and cares for the old man. Santiago wants to break his bad luck so on the eighty fifth day he goes further towards the sea to catch the big fish. Santiago does not give up on his goals and does not accept defeat no matter what he faces, with the help of friendship, strength and skill, and luck. The boy's friendship made Santiago not feel lonely. Also when the boy would help Santiago with his fishing gear everyday probably made Santiago feel confident in catching the fish because he knew finally there was someone there to support him and keep him company which made the boy get to know Santiago more than anyone else. "Santiago," the boy said to him as they climbed the bank from where the skiff was hauled up. "I could go with you again we've made some money." Only the boy, not the narrator, refers to the old man

Symbolism of the Snake

The word "snake," is intensively defined as a long limbless reptile that has no eyelids, a short tail, and jaws that are capable of considerable extension, which comes from Old English snaca-snake; synonymous with evil, twist, poison, it's used in a variety of stories and expressions that reveal its extensive meaning. The intensive definition of snake is puzzling but comprehensible. We define snake as a reptile, and this is its genus or larger group in which it falls in. It's a specific kind of reptile-as the definition points out a lengthy limbless reptile, with no eyelids, a small tail, and a jaw. The easiest way to examine the set of characteristics is to define each one. Limbless is an adjective, which means having no limbs. Its opposite or antonym is limbed which means having limbs. A limb is defined as an arm or a leg. They are also distinguished by having a dry, sc

The Basics of Playing the Clarinet

When putting together the clarinet, you need to make sure to not put any pressure on the keys because this can cause damage to the pads, instead, place your hands around the areas that will not be affected by the pressure (the area with the least amount of keys). Keep all of the corks lubricated with grease to insure that the parts fit nice and easily. Start assembling the pieces together with a gentle twist, when you get to the two joints, press down the key to lift the upper bridge key so you don't damage it when twisting the two pieces together, and then carefully line up the upper and lower bridge keys. Once the clarinet is assembled, then you can put the ligature and the reed onto the mouthpiece. Place the ligature on the mouthpiece with the screws loosened and the handles on the right side of the instrument. Hold the reed between the thumb and forefinger, slip it under the ligature until the reed is about a hair above the tip of the mouthpiece. Make sure that the reed is exactl

The Rise and Fall of the Decemvirs

According to the texts, which are derived from "ab urbe condita (3.33-54)," the author is trying to state that it is Decemviri itself determining its life and burring itself to the ground. The Decemvirs, Senate, plebs and patricians defy death to defend their own interests individually (33, 37), which will indeed infer the failure of the early Republic in Rome. The Decemvirs are contained with ten men, who are all the prestigious people in Rome. Some of them are from the previous consuls, some are the commissioners who had gone to Athens, and the others are chosen from the aged men (33). At the very beginning, the Decemvirs have done things perfectly. Livy suggests, "The presidency of the whole body was, in accordance with the wishes of the plebs, entrusted to Appius" (33) in order to picture the best blueprint of how can the Decemvirs be. However good times don't last long. People start to think, "they should turn over each separate item in their minds, discuss the in conversations with each other, and bring forward for public debate" (34), which shows the beginning of the

The Portraits of Emily Graves Williston and Miss Kelly

One of my favorite writers, Echo Chan, ended her life with a pair of silk stockings at the age of 47, in the hopes of making time stop in the prime of her life. She was so narcissistic that she used such an extremely drastic way to prevent time from tainting and corroding her beauty. In contrast with this peculiar Asian lady, Mrs. Williston and Miss Kelly employed painters to leave their ideal image in portraiture. Painters - almost from the same time period in the 19th century- treat time as the catalyst for their art, rather than the chronic torture of beauty. Women such as Emily Graves Williston and Miss Kelly, who were at different ages, project a distinct and particular charm that exclusively belongs to their stage in life. These two images convey the beauty of stillness versus liveliness through the painter's use of composition, color, and texture. Both artists strive to preserve these women's timeless beauty on canvas. In the first image, the woman sitting in front of us is Mr
