The History and Transformation of VampiresWhen you hear the word "vampire", you may think of a pale, fearsome creature that lurks in the night, looking for a living victim to sink its pointed fangs into. You can thank movies and books for this. People all around the world have their beliefs and disbeliefs on this subject. There is no scientific evidence of actual vampires, but there are a number of real medical conditions that might result in vampirism behavior or appearance (Dean 1). Some even believe that they have encountered or witness vampires, and all they'd have to share is their stories. Society's fascination with vampires doesn't compare to chilling reality and history about them. There are a few animals who exhibit vampire characteristics, including leeches, lampreys and vampire bats, and in all of these cases the vampire's intentions are to draw enough blood till they are satisfied, but not enough to kill the host (Soniac 1). There are, however, many self-identified vampires who participate in gothic-ins |

Women's Rights - United States and Arab WorldThroughout the world, feminism activists' voices are increasingly rising and demanding equality. However, due to the views of some cultures toward women, feminism is being turned down or simply ignored or sometimes punished. A lack of rights can be found in both worlds whether it was in career choice, sexual assault cases, or stereotypical roles assigned to the women. The United States, in contrast to the Arabic world, provides more freedom and autonomy for the women regarding laws of equality. Numerous women hold important positions in society. A contemporary example would be Hillary Clinton, who held the secretary of state position, and an older example would be Rebecca Falton, who became the first woman elected to the United States Senate. Also, in the United States, murder is considered a horrible crime, while it is justified as an act of manhood in some cases in the Arabic World. In the United States, women are not always controlled by religious customs, while most Arabic women a |

Life Span Growth and DevelopmentHuman development is an intricate lifelong process beginning before birth and extending to death; however, the common bond all humans have is basic life stages from birth to death. At each moment in life, every human being is in a state of personal evolution. Though no two human beings will have the same life experiences, there are certain predictable patterns that occur and are common to most everyone. How a person develops throughout their life depends on a blending of environmental experiences and biology. Nature and nurture intertwined even before we are born. Physical changes largely drive the process, as our cognitive abilities advance and decline in response to the brain's growth in childhood and reduced function in old age. Psychosocial development is also significantly influenced by physical growth, as our changing body and brain, together with our environment, shape our identity and our relationships with other people. As human beings progress from infancy to childhood to ado |

To His Coy Mistress - Carpe Diem"To His Coy Mistress" by Andrew Marvell is an unnamed man's proposal to his coy mistress to sleep with him. When the mistress does not give in to the lover's persuasive pleas while playing to her romantic sensibilities, he attempts to frighten her with the reality of the nearness of death. The lover uses this theme of carpe diem in his argument by trying to convince his lover to be with him by telling her of what little time they have, and because of this scarcity of time, they must be together now while they have the chance to. In other words they must "seize the day" while they still have time. In the first stanza of the poem the male speaker begins his seduction by telling her of all the wonderful things they could do if only they had enough time. He ironically gives them impossibly long stretches of time in which they have to spend together, "I would love you ten years before the flood, and as you should, |

Jealousy in Their Eyes Were Watching GodIn human life, people are bound to be different in one way or the other. People achieve different kinds of success, and even naturally, people are created differently, with some being talented, beautiful, and smart while the rest of the population is ordinary. In many instances, ordinary people will be envious of other people whom they perceive to be better. Ironically, jealousy ravages the entire population such that even relatives and great friends will be jealous of each other. In Hurston's Their Eyes Were Watching God, Janie is a perfect example of how people can be envious of another person. Janie was born to a white school teacher and a black woman. Her mom runs away when Janie is still a little girl, leaving the grandmother to raise her. In her young age and lack of exposure, Janie thinks she is a white girl and "the same as everyone else." At school, the other black kids are jealous of her appearance. Janie is light skinned, and she wears the Washburn's children clothes that |

Communication in Much Ado About NothingIn William Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing, communication, or lack thereof, is highlighted as one of the biggest problems throughout the entire plot. Misinterpretation is the result of this poor communication and the overall message is lost within the chaos. A prime example of this is when Dogberry tells Leonato that his watchmen "have indeed comprehended two auspicious persons" (III.v). Leonato is in "great haste" (III.v), because he has to get ready for Hero's wedding. If Dogberry had spoken clearly and concisely to Leonato and explained to him what had happened, Claudio would not have slandered Hero at the wedding, because the message would have reached Leonato. The night before the wedding is when Claudio hears that Hero is "cheating" on him. Claudio is in a really dire circumstance because he does not have enough time to process the information in his head. Although Claudio is wrong for promising, "in the congregation where I should wed, there will I shame her" (III.ii), it was Leonato's impatience and D |

The Argument Culture by Deborah TannenIn "The Argument Culture," by Deborah Tannen, Tannen logically and rationally states her opinions regarding the way individuals talk to one another. This piece of work is more than just opinionated. Deborah Tannen artistically lists ways to go about transitioning into more of a dialogue culture. Backing up her ideas and opinions, Tannen uses concrete evidence to fully support her in a way that makes arguments against her moot. Tannen approaches the subject of society being in an argument culture, so that her readers will be able to comprehend where she is coming from; explaining it to a degree that would be relatable to her audience, Deborah Tannen appears as a friendly, trustworthy, and academically inclined writer. Tannen ingeniously voices her feelings about the argument culture in a way that is appealing to her audience, which makes it easy to agree with her theory, and could possibly be the beginning of the change she highly encourages all of humanity to make. Lord of the Flies and the Realist TheoryIn his shocking novel, "Lord of the Flies," author William Golding presents an interesting analogy to the anarchic world of modern politics and the constant struggle for power. He creates a fictional situation where a group of English boys are stranded on an uninhabited island without any adults present. The struggles faced by these boys and the conflict that arises between them mirrors the structure of the modern international political system. Golding advocates many ideas about international politics that are shared by scholars from the Realist point of view. The situation presented by Golding holds true to key Realist beliefs such as: the state of international politics is anarchical, human nature is essentially self serving, and national security is the most important item for any state. One of the first main ideas of Realist thought that Golding's novel supports is that the world is anarchical and the states are left to struggle for power amongst themselves. The world has neve |

Exterminate All the Brutes by Sven LindqvistImperialism is a process created to expand the state by dominating foreign territory while abusing the population as well as the natural resources. Lindquist believed imperialism was not only the cause of the Holocaust but was not used to help the natives of foreign territory. Instead imperialism was used to strategically eliminate undesired races. "Exterminate All the Brutes" analyzes the primary cause of the Holocaust through his studies of Joseph Conrad's "Heart of Darkness" which gives his writing a shadow of European thought. Lindquist supplements his analysis by connecting colonial imperialism to social Darwinism and the evolutionary theory. Though Lindquist thoroughly explains how imperialistic expansion and evolutionary theory insured the Holocaust, World War One also increased the chances of Hitler's genocide in World War Two. The following paragraphs entail specific evidence of Lindquist's analysis as well as how World War One influenced the Holocaust. European ideals often |

World War I and the Emergence of CanadaAfter being victorious at Vimy Ridge and Passchendaele, Canadian soldiers found themselves overwhelmed with national pride. As a result of their outstanding efforts during the war, Canada gained an international status by winning their own seat and participating at the Paris Peace Conference in 1919. Although some country's representatives, including US President Woodrow Wilson, opposed the idea of Canada signing independently, Canada still got its own signature on the Treaty of Versailles indented under "British Empire". Canada also obtained a separate seat on the League of Nations, an international organization that was established at the Paris Peace Conference. Canada fought long and hard to receive the international recognition they deserved. As George Woodcock, a famous Canadian writer, said, "The emergence of Canada as a nation among nations within the broader world context, caused people to think less of what divided them than of what united them." With these factors, World War I was evidentially an important part of Canada's emerging independence. But the war also developed and caused troubles a |

The Battle at Manila BayThe Battle at Manila Bay took place on 1 May 1898 and was the first major engagement of the Spanish-American War. The commander of the Spanish Fleet was veteran Pacific squadron Admiral Patricio Montojo who was up against a rising leader, Commodore George Dewey, who became Admiral after the annihilation of Montojo's fleet. The battle and the overall Victory of the U.S. over the world power Spain made other nations acknowledge the rising power of the United States at sea. Chance and leadership played a big role in the outcome of the Battle at Manila Bay, but America's steel armored, protected cruisers, and long range 8-inch guns had the greatest impact on the victory of the battle which marked the end of the Spanish Colonial period in Philippine history. The United States prior to the Battle at Manila Bay was in a period of construction and growth in its Maritime and Naval expansion. The United States had no proximate enemies, other than the Native Americans resistance in the heart of |

The Sinister MacbethIn "Macbeth," a sinister play written by William Shakespeare, Macbeth goes through a change in his personality, morals and values. There are three specific evil forces that drive Macbeth to his downfall, Lady Macbeth's influence, The three Witches, and his own ambition. Lady macbeth is one of the three forces that drive Macbeth to his downfall, she is equally as ambitious as her husband but is unable to take action herself, perhaps because of the social constrains at the time(Howard 84).Lady Macbeth is the "spur" in the relationship, her values and morals change drastically through out the play, Shakespeare reveals different stages of her morals, values and different facets of her personality. During the first three acts of the play Lady Macbeth is portrayed as an evil character, one that pushes and manipulates Macbeth through out the play. Mr. Linder states "It is Lady Macbeth's desire for Duncan to be king, that prompts her to seize the witches prophesies and interpr |

Wild Strawberries - Directed by Ingmar BergmanThis being the first Bergman film I have seen, "Wild Strawberries" left me very intrigued needing to know more about his style and technique by exploring his other films. From this film though I can tell that Bergman's directing style is something that is not so ordinary. He's very subtle and realistic with his story telling, and it lays a nice contrast with the depth and imagination of his characters that lets him express more of a formalistic style. In my opinion this is something to be admired because he creates and contains a film with diversity based out of very different styles and themes while telling the actual external story in a realistic manner. This some how manipulated my mind as if I was going crazy with his visions in the story because everything else was so realistic. He pulls this off by matching the cinematography of the main character's (Isak) "real life" and dreams to look the same, which matches the age and blandness of Isak's life. Bergman played around with the idea of dreams |

Posionous Love in Wuthering HeightsIn the novel "Wuthering Heights," by Emily Bronte, certain imagery is displayed throughout. This imagery is usually more three dimensional than two, and on closer inspection reveals more to the story than on first glance. While this insight provided by the description isn't vital, it does help to flesh out the story as a whole by allowing the reader to make connections and create a network of similar imagery. One style of imagery that's heavily used in chapter ten of "Wuthering Heights" is nature imagery. Through the utilization of this nature imagery, the reader gains new understanding about the overarching theme of poisonous love. An obvious example of this comes when Catherine becomes ill after Heathcliff vanishes. She departs to stay with the Linton's, and Ms. Dean explains that her behavior was exceptional. "It was not the thorn bending to the honeysuckles, but the honeysuckles embracing the thorn" (94). In the metaphor, the Linton's are being compared to the honeysuckles while Catheri |

Compassion in an Uncompassionate WorldIn an excerpt from "Compassion in Buddhism without Beliefs," the author introduces us to the development of loving which the author rightly sees not just as a separate exercise but also as a means to developing mindfulness and loosening the grip of centeredness. Compassion is a big role in our lives and states that compassion can awaken our lives if done correctly, which I completely agree with. If you want that awakening, then compassion must be given universally to everybody. Generally, everyone feels some sort of compassion, but honestly that compassion is sort of flawed. It is flawed because for instance, some feel compassion for human beings but not for animals for other types of living beings. Others feel compassion for animals and some other types of sentient beings but not for humans. Others who feel compassion for human beings, only feel compassion for human beings of their own country or race. Then there are some people who feel compassion for their friends but not for everyb |

The Epidemic of Antibiotic ResistanceThe term antimicrobial resistance refers to microbial organisms that are resistant to antibiotics as well as a number of affiliated drugs that act to treat and expunge infectious bacterium. These agents have been utilized for over seventy years to care for infected disease ridden patients. Thankfully through the years of employing such chemically enhanced products, the death rate amongst those suffering from infectious ailments and diseases has greatly diminished. The overall use of antibiotics has become a beneficial resource to humanity, especially when used correctly and when necessary. However due to the vitality placed on these products, infectious bacterium have been able to adapt and cause these drugs to become obsolete. The world has relied so heavily on the use of antimicrobial agents for so long that these organisms meant to disintegrate have mutated into antimicrobial-resistant bacteria. Patients exposed to such organisms run the risk of infection, suffering high priced medi |

Frankenstein and the Science of Playing GodEach literary period is a reinterpretation of the one before. There may be a synthesis of the previous themes and ideals, or a rebellion against them, but the preceding works invariably inform and influence new authors. Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, originally published in 1818 with a second edition published in 1831, although assigned to the Romantic period of literature1798-1832, surpasses her contemporaries by its complexity of themes, scientific and religious pragmatism, as well as social commentaries embedded deep within. In 1812 Mary Shelley the nineteen year old and her friends made a literary competition in Geneva Switzerland to see who could make the best ghost story. Mary Shelley wrote Frankenstein along side with her husband Percy Shelley both working with their own projects Mary with Frankenstein and Percy with his own project Prometheus unbound. It could be said that in the time after the scientific revolution or the age of reflection influenced her in the way of the mad s |

My Fascination with Buying ShoesConsumers are faced with purchasing decisions on a daily basis, whether on a professional or personal level, these decisions involve a thorough process. Shoes in particular are a fascinating and relevant area for me. In the past shoes were used for functional purposes, their purpose has changed in modern society. Shoe consumers vary tremendously in age, income, education level and tastes. In today's day and age the footwear market has become very competitive and in order to attract consumers, it is important for the company to fully understand how consumers will respond to different product features such as price and marketing appeal which will have a great advantage over its competitors. Consumer behavior is affected by many uncontrollable factors and purchases are strongly influenced by social, personal and psychological factors. These factors cannot be controlled by marketers but must be taken into careful consideration before launching product or advertising the product. When purc |

Political Equality in AmericaAmericans are guaranteed certain rights such as life liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Political equality would fall under these guaranteed rights, however America has struggled very much with this throughout history and continues to today. Political equality is the idea that individual preferences should be given equal weight. (textbook p.8) It is clear that this law is not has not been upheld in the past and still has flaws today. One of the factors that hinders political equality is our current two party system. With a two party system there are only two parties that have a realistic chance in gaining control of major offices of government. (textbook 235) Citizens can vote for minor parties, which can occasionally effect elections but they usual don't have an impact. With only two choices a lot of the time there's a good chance that neither party will be appealing enough to vote for. This can be a problem for equality because it is tough for our representatives to properly do their job of representing the people when there are only two sides to choose from. The two party sys |

Police and Community DevelopmentThe relationship between police and community can be improved by having more public meetings, giving the people more security and assistance in approaching their problems. Living in a community, one can go through many problems with neighbors and even with the police. The police should be responsible for the security of its people, but instead some police lack this support. The people and the police should have an understanding relationship; one that can allow the people to have their freedom of speech and one that can allow the people to understand what the police's duties are. To have a fruitful relationship between the two, the police along with its people should work hand-in-hand with one another. Literature and Unreliable NarratorsAn unreliable narrator is a narrator who cannot be trusted and is biased. There are many reasons why they may be biased, some include ignorance, mentally unstable, or they want to tell the story from a point of view that does not incriminate them. Many authors who write fiction use unreliable narrators to add a certain aura to their stories. Two authors that use unreliable narrators in their stories are Fyodor Dostoevsky and Edgar Allen Poe. The Dostoevsky book that is being referred to in this essay is Crime and Punishment, and the Poe stories that are being assessed are The Tell-Tale Heart, Black Cat, and The Cask of Amontillado. Authors usually use unreliable narrators to darken the story, make the reader doubt the story, and portray guilt as a motif. An unreliable narrator has certain personality traits which help to achieve malevolence. These people are usually mentally unstable and ponder committing serious crimes, such as murder. They think it will better society or their own |

The Complexity of Masaccio's TrinityI previously viewed all Renaissance paintings with an uneducated eye, solely viewing them as religious works, which I had no interest in, based upon my lack of understanding of the narratives involved, the stories of patronage or even the difficulties of the techniques used to paint them. I was that person that Kenneth Clarke spoke of, my aesthetic experience was curtailed but as my knowledge base grew with each lecture, my appreciation for this magnificent piece and the skills involved in its creation grew (Clarke K., 1974) I have chosen to focus on two key aspects of this work, the subject matter, and the linear perspective. The Trinity fresco is a complex painting, it's title has changed through the years first recorded as "Memoriale di molte staue e picture di Florentia (1510) by Francesco Albertini, who called it "a Crucifixion, that is a Trinity , with death at the foot", Vasari (1568) described it as Trinity with the Virgin and St. John the Evangelist" cont |
