Putting an End to Distracted Driving

Distracted driving is the leading cause of death in car crashes in the United States. Distracted driving is an umbrella covering texting and driving, as well as using GPS, computers, the radio, reading and writing texts or emails, and even simply reaching for any of the above. Fatal Analysis Reporting System (FARS), a division of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, reported 30,800 fatal crashes in the year 2012 [Fat12]. They reported that approximately 50% were caused by drivers that were distracted while driving [Nat15]. They say approximately because it is nearly impossible to gather 100% of the evidence needed to collectively agree that distracted driving was the cause or played a huge factor in the fatality. Issues such as drivers dying or being seriously injured and unable to testify if they were using a phone or not, and legally obtaining phone records is also difficult and cannot prove without a doubt th

The Technology of Tablets

Once upon a time, tablets were pieces of stone with etchings on them. Now, a different type of tablet weighs less than a pound and can store thousands of books and materials. Technology has changed the way we access and comprehend material. Nationally, a very controversial and disputed topic is whether or not tablets should replace physical textbooks. Many educators agree, describing tablets to be a beneficial learning tool, durable, and can store a wide variety of books. Critics disagree and describe tablets to be a major distraction to students, and are fragile. Some educators believe that physical textbooks are superior to e-reader because they claim that physical textbooks are more convenient and less likely to distract the reader. Tim Challies, a book reviewer and co-founder of Cruciform Press believes "The e-book on the other hand, tends toward distraction. They are created to do many things well, which means that the focus is not only on the reading experience but on gami

Early 20th Century Temperance and Women's Suffrage

The American temperance movement, which began during the 19th century, called for a total ban on the sale, transport, and purchase of alcoholic beverages. This movement protested alcohol's damaging effects on both the workplace, and the home. America was facing a serious alcohol problem, as alcohol was growing stronger, but American men were still drinking as much as they had in the past. The men and women in the temperance movement believed that alcohol was responsible for the immorality of America. The movement eventually succeeded with the passing of the 18th amendment, in January, 1920. Less than a year later, the 19th amendment was passed, which guaranteed women the right to vote, in addition to guaranteeing freedom from gender-based discrimination, at least from a federal standpoint. Although the two movements may seem different, the political changes called for by both were closely tied. The question lies in how, exactly, the pre-Prohibition temperance movement affected the wome

James Braddock - Cinderella Man

The well-known fairy tale "Cinderella" depicts a young girl who starts out with nothing, and finishes with everything. James Braddock's story shows a similar journey to Cinderella's story, evidently creating a movie of his life called, "Cinderella Man." Braddock began his journey as a successful boxer fighting his way to the top. He had it all; a beautiful girl, money, and fame. However, when the stock market crash hit in 1929 him and his family lost everything. This included a majority of their belongings, their house, and the ability to pay their bills. When he saw his family struggling and becoming endangered, he made a transformed himself after getting back in the ring, and giving hope to the rest of his helpless town. Elisa in The Chrysanthemums

In a society predominantly led by men, most women do not have much of a say. They follow orders swiftly and obediently; somewhat like cadets taking orders from their commanding officers. During the 1930s, women were under physical and emotional control by their male counterparts. Steinbeck illustrates this in "The Chrysanthemums" and Elisa's desire to break free from constricting gender stereotypes. Elisa, the story's protagonist, lived on a farm, far away from the rest of civilization; the only time she was able to communicate to people, besides her husband, was either when others came to buy their crop or to fix broken items on the farm. This led to a life lacking social communication and isolat

The Cultural Outsiders - Ethnic Discrimination

The society is influenced by ethnic diversity in several ways that draw so much discourse in the current world. Diversity alters the societal character by redrawing racial and ethnic boundaries. It also promotes racial and ethnic identities that help to challenge negative images. Moreover, it introduces itself into social spaces that were once void of racial and ethnic population. In these sense racial and ethnic minorities have increased in their identity in the risks and challenges they face in the United States society (Aguire 49) In the United States, the identifiability of persons within racial and ethnic populations has increased because of diversity (Aguire 49). This paper, therefore, seeks to draw attention into how the diversity influences society, not in just non-material culture but also in the material culture with a focus on the United States culture. American society is influenced by ethnicity diversity in several ways. First, different ethnic locations have ways in whic

My Childhood in a Bamboo Basket

Isn't it amazing to see a woman carrying a stack of grass, bunch of firewood, and little child at the same time on the steep sloped path? It used to be several hours uphill to reach home. She would be tired before she reached, but couldn't stop for taking rest on her way. Forgetting the acute heat of the sun, the torrents of monsoon rain, the grave hunger, the intolerable thirst, and the devastating tiredness, she used to scamper towards her home to see another infant, whom she had left in the crib before the dawn. This was the lifestyle of my mother packed with struggle, the everyday schedule crammed with piles of work, the small world bounded with only household chores, and the daily thoughts filled with dream and imagination. With a grass-stuffed bamboo basket hovering on her head, climbing up and down the long sheer slopes once a day, refraining from fulfilling her strong desires and wishes, she would spend her days

Rite of Passage by Richard Wright

In Richard Wright's "Rite of Passage," Johnny goes under identity changes. He changes from a nice, happy, smart boy to a semi-hardened mugger. Johnny had the option to stay with a new family, he chose not to. He does not have a stable identity and is troubled by it. He has experienced too much change. Johnny's identity changes over the course of the book when he runs away from home, he suddenly ends up being the leader of The Moochers. This group of boys are not just any boys, they are a secret gang of muggers who walk around Harlem looking for prey. "Strip'em; he's tough," Baldy ordered tensely"(106). Johnny, when he runs away at first, honestly has no idea what will come next, and he may not be thinking into the future very much, and does not know what his identity will become. Billy tells Johnny about the idea of a secret organization of foster boys. He does not tell Johnny about the mugging; only tells him, he

Finding Peace in the World

Both in the world and in every community, we need to have peace. All human beings share the same needs, and there are many ways that we can make our community peaceful and spread this around the world. We don't always need a big group to make a difference. The smallest groups can start making change and it can spread to others. One thing I think is needed to create a more peaceful world and community would be by seeking to love - not to control others. Trying to control others  for one's own benefit, will cause conflicts with others. Reducing control by listening to everyone's opinions, and hearing what they have to say, is going to broaden the approach of love of others.  Everyone is going to have his or her own opinions. No matter what their opinions are, we have to respect what they are saying, even when we don't agree with their opinions. We also need to look as the good qualities in people, not just their bad qualities. An

Nutrition and Vegetarianism

Are you an uninformed adult who doubts the vegetarian lifestyle? Vegetarianism offers benefits no other lifestyle would come close to; such as better health and a whole new mind and body. Don't we all want a healthy lifestyle? While vegetarianism may bring bad consequences, if properly educated, vegetarianism can be beneficial to your health. Although, we are taught that meat is rich in protein and your body needs it to function, there are alternate sources of protein available that are equivalent in nutrients. There are many benefits that come from being an educated vegetarian, and it is important that all people gain knowledge about vegetarianism before they place judgments on people who choose this lifestyle. Statistics and medical facts prove that vegetarianism can benefit the body in the same, if not better, ways than meat can. In the United States alone, the total direct medical costs due to meat consumption were $30-60 billion a year (Craig). Diseases such as: cancer, diabetes,

Personal Letter - Human Trafficking

Dear Commissioner ____________, My name is __________ _________, and I am a survivor of sex trafficking. I started down this path as an exotic dancer in California & later Las Vegas. From that point on, I began to make money as an escort on the internet and the Las Vegas strip. As my life started taking a turn for the worse, I ended up walking the street corners in order to make a living for what I thought was for myself, but in reality was for my pimp. I have experienced the mental, emotional, & physical trauma that the sex industry has to offer. In 2012 a near death experience changed my life for the better. I was able to escape and begin my recovery. I later on formed my own organization called Alabaster Outreach here in Portland Oregon. It's mission is to bring awareness to the community about sex trafficking and offer resources to victims and survivors. I must say that during my time as a forced sex worker, I was always treated as a criminal instead of a victim, and still faced

The Benefits of Legalizing Marijuana

A statement that's written in the National Archives about the 18th Amendment says, "The amendment worked at first, liquor consumption dropped, arrests for drunkenness fell, and the price for illegal alcohol rose higher than the average worker could afford. Alcohol consumption dropped by 30 percent and the United States Brewers' Association admitted that the consumption of hard liquor was off 50 percent during Prohibition." However, as time progressed, the statistics would change. Now that medical marijuana is legal in 21 States and DC how will prohibition of this substance affect the United States? Is it going to help lessen crime, produce huge tax revenue, or give ailing patients an effective medicine? My beliefs are marijuana can offer patients a relief from nausea discomfort, muscle spasms, joint pain and other symptoms for numerous of individuals who have not had success with conventional medication. Many adults desire marijuana in oppose to alcohol as a simple way to unwind. In

Literary Analysis - Araby by James Joyce

"Gazing up into the darkness I saw myself as a creature driven and derided by vanity, and my eyes burned with anguish and anger." This last passage from the story "Araby" by James Joyce from Dubliners has a great amount of significance in showing and telling us the theme of the story. The theme that emerges out of this final image of despair at the end of "Araby" is hopelessness and entrapment because the story shows the narrator, who remains unknown, feels trapped and does not have a sense of identity due to the endless routine given in the environment he lives in. The narrator feels a sense of imprisonment, which leads to trying to escape Dublin and chase a dream that is unrealistic to obtain by talking to a girl that he admires. The narrator comes to a realization that he can not have an ideal life, in the sense of finding love and experiencing new things that most people want; rather he learns to accepts the life he has, which cannot be changed. The boy's surroundings played a m

Themes in The Odyssey

"The Odyssey" is a literary classic, comprised of various events that teach the people of our generation many lessons and characteristics that the Greeks admired in the past. Homer emphasizes his ideas several times within the story using figures in a symbolic manner. These figures then appear before Odysseus as an obstacle while he continues his journey to Ithaca. Although these obstacles he encounters impede the continuation of his journey, he displays the lessons and characteristics Homer is trying to present to his audience. Therefore, The Odyssey illustrates many themes in Odysseus's journey to Ithaca. The first illustrated theme is the idea that temptations are unavoidable. In some way or another, everyone has gained or received something they cannot let go of and tempts them to want more, which, at times, is hard to fight off. In Odysseus's case, Circe informed his men that "if you shout out and command them to let you loose, they must tie you tighter with a few more rope

1984 by George Orwell - Philosophical Theories

"The choice for mankind lies between freedom and happiness and for the great bulk of mankind, happiness is better" (Orwell, 1984). In Orwell's 1984, the philosophical question of free will is raised by the circumstances of the main character, Winston Smith. Philosophers such as Jean-Paul Sartre claim that we have the freedom to make choices in our lives, and that everything one chooses to do will lead to finding one's purpose in life. This does not seem to be the case for Winston; his life seems predetermined. This paper will explore the intersection between the philosophies of John Locke, Plato, and Jean-Paul Sartre by examining the actions, and choices of Winston Smith. "Winston seems to understand he would be happier if he were free" (Orwell, 1984). According to dictionary.com freedom is defined as "the power or right to act, speak, or think as one wants without hindrance or restraint." Reflecting on our life today, in the twenty first century we have

World History - Three Revolutions

The American Revolution was successful because it resulted in the creation of America. The French Revolution was more of a failure than a success due to Napoleon actually killing innocent people while trying to rebuild France. The Haitian Revolution is actually considered the most successful slave rebellion ever because it freed the slaves and granted Haiti its independence. The American Revolution was the most successful because of three reasons: The American Revolution granted America its independence and started the steps for America to establish its government and become what it is today, the French Revolution's failures actually outweigh the successes, and the Haitian Revolution may have freed the slaves but it took a while for Haiti to be fully independent from Fra

Celebrity Twitter Analysis - Katy Perry

Katy Perry was raised in a deeply religious family and even signed with a Christian record label in Nashville, Tennessee, at the age of fifteen, but sadly, it was not a success. A couple of years later, she signed another record deal with Columbia Records back in Los Angeles, but this record also did not prove to be successful and she was shortly dropped. Finally in 2008, the controversial, but very catchy song, "I Kissed a Girl" was released and it was a smash hit. Katy Perry has now released multiple, chart-topping albums like Teenage Dream and PRISM, and released the documentary feature film Katy Perry: Part of Me. She has been featured in songs with some of music's biggest stars like Snoop Dog, Kanye West, and John Mayer. Also, she was even featured as a celebrity guest picker on ESPN's College GameDay, and was recently the half time performer for Super Bowl XLIX. Through Katy Perry's personal twitter page, @katyperry, she and her team allow Katy's quirky, colorful, and a

Overcoming by Taking Risks

What do I know about disappointment? Hurdles stared me in the face the day I entered this world. Not having a father in my life was challenging, but not having my mother has been even harder. Life greeted me with two special people to care for me when my grandparents took me in from the day I left the hospital. They took me in along with my other three siblings. But as I grew, two siblings disappeared and I was left with a brother, granny and grandfather whom I affectionately call "Pop." Inside a voice told me to, "Leap over this hurdle." I finally found the strength at a young age to walk to the starting line, but it seemed as if before I could take my place in my lane, the hurdles would be clear. Every now and then my mother would come in and out of the house to make me feel loved, but almost instantly she would take it back when she left. I quickly realized that my mother would steal from us, from me. The money I worked so hard for through the earning of good grades-gone. That hurt me a lot, but I learned that her actions were something God would fix. As her actions continued, still I looked at it as "God will fix it." Again, the voice to

The Life and Heroism of Galileo

A traditional hero typically displays characteristics of great bravery and/or wit. He is fearless and faces all challenges without fear. He acts for the greater good, and therefore displays moral excellence. Galileo is a special type of hero. Although he accomplishes his goals in the end, his motivations and methods for doing so, combined with his unique perspective and characteristics, make it difficult to categorize him as a traditional literary hero. Galileo is best described as an anti-hero because he does not act heroically or display the usual characteristics of bravery, wit, and even morality. Throughout the play, Galileo displays very covert motives. When he learns about the new Pope, who was a mathematician who understood physics, he concocts a plan to gain the support of that Pope in order to further his newfound knowledge of the universe and laws of motion. He believes that the Pope will help him because of their scientific backgrounds, and says, "If they try to do an

Desdemona - Simple and Complicated

William Shakespeare's "Othello" is filled with jealousy, deceit, heart break, love and a range of emotions that any human being could understand. Othello, the Moor, experiences all of these complicated emotions throughout the play leading not only to his death but the death of his beloved wife, Desdemona. Desdemona was a woman wanting to experience life and love. She was innocent, loving, and persistent; these qualities among others contributed to her fate. To think that Desdemona was completely innocent would underestimate her character. One might believe that she 'met her maker' before she could develop into her true form. In Othello, Desdemona comes off as a simple woman, full of innocence, and perfection. Julian Rice believes that there was more to Desdemona than seen at a glance. Desdemona was insecure about herself and she proves it in the questions she asks of Iago when waiting for Othello to arrive at the docks, "What wouldst thou write of me, if thou shouldst praise me?" (II.i.136)

Film and the Expansion and Contraction of Human Consciousness

The image is breathtaking; an illuminating fetus in a translucent orb serenely drifts through the vast emptiness of space. It actively gazes upon the passing stars and colorful planets with awe, taking in the experience whole-heartedly. There is no fear in the eyes of the fetus; instead, they emit a look of sacred naivety. The star child is motionless in his state of complete awareness, and traverses further into the universe with a brave sense of curiosity. In Maya Deren's "Meshes of the Afternoon" and Stanley Kubrick's "2001: A Space Odyssey," the directors creatively use distinctive techniques of ambiguous symbolism, montage editing, and mis en scene to follow the human experience of chasing and confronting uncertainty for the sake of retaining sanity and moving forward in evolution. In doing so, the directors convey that while our subconscious emotions can deteriorate our level of consciousness, confronting and learning from them can expand our level of inner and outer awareness.

Breast Cancer - Diagnosis and Treatment

"Most think that a diagnosis of cancer will end their life, when in reality it changes their life. Life after cancer may get back to normal, but it will never be the same" (Kneece, 2009, p.242). Visualize leaving the physician's office overhearing those words you have been diagnosed with Breast cancer. Is this really happening? Are their treatments/remedies out there for you? Why did my superior let this happen to me? In today's society Breast Cancer is effecting woman, and it is the leading cause of death. Every day the older women population faces fighting this disease on a day to day basis. Breast cancer is mostly diagnosed in women, however can also be found in men. Learning you have Breast Cancer is not the real enemy, but the late detection of finding out you have this disease. Culture of Athletics - Money and Fans

Originally, the culture of athletics revolved around the love of the sport. It has evolved into a culture dominated by money. Successful sports teams are run like corporations and they have the financial stability to accommodate fan and player standards. Ultimately, isn't it true that the fans' opinions matter most? The reality is that teams with big money are capable of providing fans with the experience they want. Athletic venues have improved significantly throughout the evolution of sport culture. Arenas have turned into substantial profit-making businesses when team budgets allow for the transformation from simple bleachers in a field into modern day palaces. The benefit of these changes is the improvement of comfort for fans while watching an event. Fans will stop attending events if the arenas are not up to their standards of comfort. For example, Joe Kozlowski, a writer for the New York Observer, stated (in regards to the New York Islanders arena), "seats began to stain an

Exploring Confidence and Conformity with Legos

Abstract After observing the behavior of cheating, we developed a hypothesis based on one of the significant factors in cheating behavior: confidence. The purpose of our experiment was to test whether or not confidence had an effect on an individual's willingness to conform to a cheating environment. To test our hypothesis, we created a Lego building experiment that allowed us to determine whether or not people felt comfortable with certain tasks and observe how their comfort level affected their behavior. We created cheating environments by having confederates complete the task along with the test subjects and use phones, instruction books, etc., and also tested then likelihood of subjects to cheat when nobody else around them was cheating. We found that many of our test subjects were very concerned with their own tasks and didn't have much motivation to cheat. While some of the subjects did cheat when they felt pressured and not as confident, we could not successfully prove that lowe

The Poetry and Love Connection

Unconditional love is caring about the happiness of another person without any thought for what we might get for ourselves. Love poems allow you to express yourself and your feelings. A poem can tell a story, express a moment in time, share a thought, make a proposal and express great joy or suffering. The love poem that appeals to me most is "How Do I Love Thee, Let Me Count The Ways", by Elizabeth Browning. The reason why I love this poem, it relates to my inner feelings. It resembles the love I share with my parents. The love I have for my parents and the love they have for me is unconditional love. My mother carried me for nine months in her womb. We have a unique bond that no one else could replace. A secure attachment I felt with my parents. It relates to the securities which Elizabeth Browning and I felt when we were kids. When Browning is with her love she has a sense of security she felt as a child. The love that was embraced to me enable me to love others. It makes me think
