The Lack of Equality in the Dream Act

Abstract On June 2012, an act known as the Dream Act passed congress. This act allowed undocumented young students, who met the criteria, an opportunity to attend school without the fear of being deported to their country of origin. This act also allows these young people to work, and obtain their driver's license, or state ID. Even though they are given these opportunities, there is one huge problem; these students are not eligible for financial aid. Every issue has an opposing side, which makes the topic controversial. While proving themselves to the authorities by performing well academically and standing up as leaders, some still disagree with the idea of these students being able to receive financial aid. Believing that this particular idea was going to worsen things, and that they do not deserve financial aid in the first place as a result of their emigration status, led politicians to deny the bill as well. On the other hand, the people who are in favor of the act argue that if

The Path of Buddhism to China

Once upon a time in India, a white elephant offered a woman a lotus flower and then entered her side. This elephant became Siddhartha; the Buddha. Buddhism eventually formed after Siddharth's long journey to find enlightenment. In time Buddhism would spread out of India and into China. One reason it was able to flow into China was it's teachings and simple message appealed to the masses. In addition it created a social concept that many latched onto. Finally with these aspects in mind many people were already attracted to it so numerous temples and chapels formed making the transfer for newbies more easy, adding to the Buddhist population and keeping it's momentum as it moved forward through China. With the 4 Noble Truths, wisdom, and Nirvana (Doc 1,2,3) part of its regimen, Buddhism enticed many people and drew them in. They would have le

Africa Under Colonial Rule

Unlike most of Africa, South Africa was very sparsely populated at the time when the first Europeans arrived. In April of 1652, Jan van Riebeeck and his expedition of Dutch Calvinist settlers landed at the Cape, on the shore of Table Bay, the site of the modern city of Cape Town. They came, not to settle, but to establish a refreshment station for passing ships, for a commission that Van Riebeeck had received from the Dutch East India Trading Company (VOC). The station was to supply the ships travelling to Southern Asia with fresh fruit, vegetables and meat.  They grew the vegetables and fruit themselves, but meat was obtained through trade with the local population (mainly Khoi-khoi). As subsequent generations of Europeans expanded further to the east, they also encountered Bantu (mostly Xhosa) who became trading partners as well as armed opponents. The Dutch settlers created very large farms of wheat and wine and thus increasing the need for labour and causing the Cape Colony to s

The Unacceptable - Bullying in Schools

Bullying is repeated verbal, physical, social or psychological behavior that is harmful and involves the misuse of power by an individual or group towards one or more persons. Bullying is a common occurrence in most schools, regardless of the grade level, socioeconomic environment, gender, religion, or sexual orientation, bullying can happen to anyone. Most children experience bullying at some point in their academic careers. Bullying is a form of proactive aggression in which the bullying is unprovoked and the bully initiates the bullying behavior (Dodge and Coie, 1987). The experience of bullying perceived by many people including Frances in her memoir entitled "Frog spawn frolics and a heart attack." Since she was a kid, she always had a trouble with friends and her environment. She always trying to be liked and loved by

Media and the Defamation of Athletes

Introduction This paper discusses the media's treatment of athletes and sports figures. Although the main focus of this paper analyzes professional athletes, cases involving professional coaches and owners are also presented. Professional athletes and coaches utilize media attention to further their career. On the other hand it seems inconsistent for these same athletes and coaches to attack media coverage as defamatory. Almost every court addressing the issue has determined that professional sports personnel are public figures (Hall). Because of potential counter claims, the cost of prosecuting a law suit, proving actual malice and falsity of the statements that are being questioned, athletes rarely file defamation claims against the media. The New York Times Actual Malice Standard protects opinions, fair comment and the neutral reporting privilege, and proof of falsity of the statements (Heumann). Professional athletes are the subject of increasing media attention. In addition to hig

The Fish by Elizabeth Bishop

Elizabeth Bishop's poem, "The Fish," expresses a speaker's view of nature from outside it, to becoming one with it. The writing suggests that by catching and then releasing a fish, the angler bonds with this fish and begins to view the world as this fish does, if only momentarily; the two worlds combine with imagery and symbolism. When the speaker first catches it, the fish is held, "half out of the water." The fish is in between worlds, half in the human's world, in the air and half in his own world, the water. Speaking of the "terrible air," symbolizing the fish being in a world he is not meant for. To the speaker he is an object, an inanimate thing. The fact that the fish does not fight the hook stuck "fast in the corner of his mouth." He is seen as a victim of humanity, of life, "a grunting weight, battered and homely, as he is at his most vulnerable now caught in between two worlds. The speaker's description of this fish implies he l

Keys to Good Sportsmanship

Before walking onto the field, you are told by your coach to get the win, play to the best of your ability, and to have a good game. You are told by your parents to play nice and good luck. You hear in the stands your classmates and peers cheer on your name and to fight for the win You run onto the field with determination, and a positive mindset. You want to play your game, and be the best player, but what makes the game is the sportsmanship. It is the bonding between the team players and even the opponent players. You can't have a good game if there is a constant battle between the opposing sides or even the team itself. You walk onto your field with pride, destination, and a desire for that particular sport. What is also needed is respect; you must respect everything. I know when I

President Truman and the Atomic Bomb

The decision to drop atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki put an immediate end to World War II. While some may view it to be a necessary evil, such as author Robert P. Newman, who believes that Truman had carefully considered all of the options, the bombs were the fastest way to end the war. and that Truman believed the Soviets were not necessary in terms of ending the war. Others, such as author Gar Alperovitz, believe that Truman had been aware that the bombs were not exactly necessary because Truman knew what the implications of allowing the Soviets to enter the war and altering the surrender terms would consist of. Gar Alperovitz is the author of Hiroshima: History Reassess. Alperovitz argues three main points in his article: the Soviet entry into the war would've resulted in its immediate end, the atomic bomb was used mostly to intimidate Russia, and there had been no support acknowledging the bombs necessity after the war. Alperovitz heavily cites multiple sources in the begi

The U.S. Economy at a Glance

There are several factors to consider when assessing the current state of the economy. Our current GDP stands at a whopping $16.8 trillion. However, a more accurate indicator of the economy's gross domestic product is GDP/capita-- approximately $53,000. Because GDP growth has fluctuated between a sustainable rate of 2 and 3%, the overall health of our nations GDP can be summarized as good. Unfortunately, GDP cannot capture the distribution of growth, and thus inequality is not well represented. In addition, GDP does not measure volunteer work, as well as the work-value of stay-at-home parents. Inflation is at 1.7%, and unemployment at 6.1% as of August 2014. Both inflation

Westernization and Traditional Cultures

From clothes to coffee, food and movies, westernization is big and getting bigger worldwide. In China KFC is the most popular food franchise and Buick is the most selling car line. Yum Brands in China is opening a KFC store every day ("KFC's Explosive Growth in China," 2011). In the first place, fortunately or unfortunately it is a fact that many cultures are submerged with western culture. They find that the old ways of ancient tradition is quickly evaporating due to western influence. Moreover society today lives in an era of information where technology and media is increasing daily. Due to these steaming developments many cultures around the globe have felt the impact of westernization, where the influence of the western beliefs and values drastically has faded theses culture's language and tradition. Both the media and technology in a whole has contributed to westernization. In like manner, this seems reasonable

Scholarly Behavior - We Can Do Better

There are three fundamental elements to the life of any student, regardless of the grade level or personal preferences. Managing these three elements can be especially difficult all throughout his or her life. Students have to be concerned with living three lives: an intellectual life, a social life and a devout life. Students must hold studies and intellectual pursuit in high regard being that, after all, it is the reason they are in school. Beyond that, they must also manage to have a place within the community and develop a circle of friends. Beyond even that, they must not only not neglect their interior life, they must actively enrich it. They must have control over their desires, pursue high moral standards and become increasingly mature more and more each year. It sometimes seems impossible to do justice to each. But what can make this triple-life balance even more of a challenge is when intellectuality is the cog that causes the machine to run slower and less efficient. My Turn to Be Bullied

Certain things happen in life that you never forget. Sometimes they are happy memories and sometimes they are sad. Sometimes they're powerful moments of injustice...like when it's your turn to be bullied. When I was younger, I was not the most popular. I was known as the quiet, shy girl who often dazed off in class, all the while being admired for my level of smarts by the teachers. I was short, a little chunky, wore glasses and only had two friends in my school, well I thought. I met Catherine and Faith through our parents, because they were close friends. Catherine was tall, skinny and had short brown hair. Faith was short, about my size, 130 pounds, and had blonde hair, short. In the beginning meeting these two girls was such a blessing and so exciting. We always were hanging out and the best part was that they only lived a few houses down from us! Years went by and all was great, even in the beginning of eighth grade year. But little did I know I would soon see the true colors of

Maya Angelou and Fredrick Douglas

"A bird doesn't sing because it has an answer, it sings because it has a song." Perhaps you've heard Maya Angelou's quotes or read her poems and books. Maya Angelou was an extraordinary person who inspired many people. "The white man's happiness cannot be purchased by the black man's misery." Have you heard of Fredrick Douglass, a black man who escaped slavery and became leader of the abolitionist movement? Despite the different characteristics between Fredrick Douglass and Maya Angelou, there are many similar personal characteristics including being religious, being perseverant, and being principled. The first similar characteristic between Maya Angelou and Fredrick Douglas is that both of them were religious. These two phenomenal people were both inspired by Christianity. During "A Night with Maya Angelou" at LSU Union Theater, Maya Angelou was asked whether spiritualism had inspired her and Maya replied that spiritualism had indeed inspired her over the years. The same goes for Fr

Creating Meaning in Ode to a Nightingale

The poem "Ode to a Nightingale" by the romantic poet John Keats is about a man sitting alone outside at night listening to a nightingale sing somewhere in the woods. As he listens to the nightingale's song he laments about how he wishes he could leave the world he belongs to and become a part of the nightingale's world. The poem creates this meaning through strong imagery, rhyme, and allusions to common mystical images that were well-known in the time period, all of which can be found in the fourth stanza of the poem. The fourth stanza of the poem is filled with a lot of strong imagery. Keats describes flying to the nightingale on "the viewless wings of Poesy" (Keats line 33). "Poesy" is another word for poetry and the wings with which poetry will carry him to the bird on are "viewless" - they can't be seen. He describes the world of the nighting

Ideals of the American Constitution

Leading up to the creation of the constitution, America was a broken system, that needed fixing. The constitution was the great solution to all of the problems. During the revolution it seemed like all political ruling was rather frenetic, the articles of confederation being one of the main perpetrators in this area. While the articles of confederation was a decent starting point, it did not deal with a lot of the modern issues the government faced. The newly formed government had to deal with slavery, unbelievable taxing, poor business, criminals, and angry people who could not even vote. The articles of confederation were just not prepared to deal with this during the transitional time period. The Constitution fulfilled the three ideals the country decided it needed, freedom, liberty, and equality. Freedom was deemed a fundamental right to the citizens of the United States when the constitution was formed. Freedom was the entire reason for the Revolution. The founding Father's firs

Use of Opinion in Writing

One thing that has always been drilled into my head about my writing is to keep my opinion out of it. This is something that has always been hard for me because I believe that writing is a form of self-expression. If I can't state my own opinion, then how can I express myself? I am also a very opinionated person, so someone is going to know what I think in one way or another. I understand that writing a summary is just reiterating the text, but if I am asked to write a critique or an analysis, I feel I should use my own opinion about the text. Keeping opinion out of writing hinders a student's ability to write. If a student isn't interested in what he or she is writing, it is likely that the quality of the writing will not be up to standard if they are not allowed to use their opinion. A good piece of academic writing can and should include the writer's opinion. I personally have not been very heavily influenced in my writing. Writing has never been one of my favorite things to do,

Spread of Western Disease in Hawaii

The first foreigners that came to Hawaii brought a new way of living to all the islands. The increase of foreign values opened the eyes of Hawaiians and gave them a new perspective on resources, but created a negative impact on the health and mentality of the Hawaiian people. In the movie Hawaii, a Christian man named Abner Hail came to Hawaii to save the souls of the native people. The collision of two different cultures left a tragedy in which differences lead to negative impacts on the native Hawaiian culture. Captain Cook left to the islands leaving the Hawaiians to believe he was Lono the god, which left a negative impact on the natives. Upon the arrival of Captain Cook, it was the time of Lono. The Shoals article states, "The Hawaiians had no doubt that they were in the presence of an important man. On the beach in front of the village hundreds of natives waited with gifts, and when Cook stepped from his boat they fell to the ground and lay face down until he encouraged th

Frederick Douglass - Learning to Read and Write

After having read "Learning to Read and Write," by Frederick Douglass, it becomes apparent to the reader that even at a very early age, Frederick Douglas was a very motivated and passionate individual. In this way, a comparison can be drawn to a quote by Charles F. Kettering, where he says "Keep on going, and the chances are that you will stumble on something, perhaps when you are least expecting it. I never heard of anyone ever stumbling on something while sitting down." This quote is analogous to Frederick Douglass's experience in that he proved that through hard work and determination, what seems impossible can actually be accomplished, even in the face of adversity. Also, the quote is instructive in that Douglass achieved enlightenment through his hard work towards reading and writing. While his peers who did not share is ambition did not stumble onto anything, remained ignorant to the things that Douglass had learned and complacent to their condition, Douglass

Inspired by Robert Doisneau

My first reaction to Robert's photos was joy. As soon as I saw his pictures I felt so happy and I enjoyed looking through all his pictures, especially the ones that captured life in a café. I spend the majority of my time in cafés doing homework or working on other projects so I really connected with those. I loved seeing essentially what we all look like from someone else's point of view. Another favorite was the pictures of society life. You got a glimpse of what it was like to go to those parties and events during the late 1940s and early 1950s. I think pictures taken around that time are some of the best out there. The dresses that the women wore to the parties were beautiful and elegant and the body language from the people makes you wonder what was going on the time the picture was taken and I absolutely love that. Robert also shows the simplicity of life through his pictures of cafés. He's showing that it doesn't take a lot to be happy even if it's just

Ferdinand de Saussure and Linguistics

Ferdinand de Saussure was a Swiss linguist, whose innovative ideas paved the way for numerous key developments in modern linguistic theory. Saussure's theories allowed linguists to analyze language synchronically, as a complete system at any given point in time; or diachronically, in its historical development. Saussure's views were significantly different than the predominant views of his time which suggested that language was a combination of sounds that magically create meanings. Conversely, he suggested that each word-which he termed as a basic unit or sign-is not merely a sound, but a sound pattern that denotes a particular meaning when contrasted with other existing signs within any given language system. Thus, he redefined the concept of language as a systematic combination of meaningful words, with variations in pronunciation made for specific structural, linguistic, historical, and social reasons. Moreover, Saussure's theories suggest that the key to understanding the underl

NIH 3T3 Cells - Confocal Microsopy

Introduction Lasers have made the 21st century even more technologically advanced with the implementation at the cellular level. Confocal microscopy alternatively to ultraviolent mercury lamps, are higher in wavelength and are more detailed in illumination in regards to shapes of organelles (Katula). In this experiment, using confocal microscopy, two organelles were visualized to understand the drug effect of nocodazole on NIH3T3 cells. Using two fluorescent stains, Mitotracker Red (accumulates in mitochondria) and Hoechst 33342 (accumulates in nuclei) were used to test what microtubules would look like resulting from the drug. Nocodazole is a drug that penetrates the microtubules to where it can be synchronized. (Karbowski). Microtubules are made up of polarized tubulin that are important for cytoskeletal rigidity, mitotic d

Poetry Comparison - Fog and Dusting

The poem, "Fog," by Carl Sandburg, and the poem, "Dusting," by Julia Alvarez, show literary elements including imagery, figurative language, sound, rhythm. "Fog" by Carl Sandburg starts off right with a metaphor, he says, "The fog comes on little cat feet," it is also imagery because he wants us to imagine the fog in a catlike way. In this poem, he is straightforward with his ideas, getting right to the point he is trying to make. The line also gives us the idea that the fog is moving slowly towards us creeping its way through, just like a cat is very slow and cautious. In line 3, "It sits looking over harbor and city," tell us it has taken up more space now. It's here. We imagine the metaphor in the first stanza as a fog looking catlike, but not the fo

Christianity and Bioethical Issues

The Christian faith has various ethical teachings which are used as a tool to communicate their beliefs in certain situations. An example of where these ethical teachings are used to communicate the churches standpoint is in the matter of bioethics. Bioethical disputes regarding such topics as; abortion, IVF and euthanasia are all acts which are heavily debated in both secular and religious senses. The Christian church uses ethical teachings such as; The Golden Rule, Sanctity of life, Human Dignity and Stewardship to explain their views on such bioethical issues. Christians deem abortion to be illicit as directly contradicts several ethical teachings such as; Sanctity of life, Human Dignity, Golden Rule and Stewardship. The ethical teaching of the golden rule states "Do unto others as you would have them do to you" and Christians argue that the termination of a pregnancy is in direct contradiction of this. All variants agree with this ethical teaching as can be seen in many

Changing Relationships in Macbeth

In the beginning of the play, Macbeth and his wife are very intimate and close to each other. Later on, however, the two characters become distant, keeping secrets to themselves. Significant scenes throughout the play of "Macbeth" that set the tone of the couple's relationship include Act 1 Scene V, Act 1 Scene VII, Act V Scene I and Act V Scene V. By the end of Act 1, after the brutality of what they have committed, the relationship is completely destroyed, giving way only to loneliness, coldness and insanity. Harold Bloom, an American literary critic, says that Macbeth and Lady Macbeth's relationship is the "best marriage in Shakespeare" at the beginning of the play, equal in love and ambition. Duncan calls Macbeth's affection "sharp as his spur," while Macbeth calls his wife "dearest partner of greatness" and "dearest love." In Act 1 Scene V, as they plan the murder of King Duncan, it is Lady Macbeth who convinces her husband to commit the crime. She believes that Macbeth alone is

Analyzing the Presidency of Andrew Jackson

Every American president has made good and bad decisions. One such decision was that of Thomas Jefferson. He called for an embargo in his Embargo Act. He cut off exports to foreign countries, which, as a result, limited imports as well. Even though he just wanted to hurt the British and French economically, he hurt the Americans more. This decision was unfavorable because it restricted trade and hurt the economy so much. It was also an example of a successful decision because it was the catalyst for American manufacturing. Andrew Jackson's presidency was a fiasco because he indirectly killed 3,000 Indians, destroyed the national bank and the American System, and he went against his personal beliefs about tariffs and states rights. Jackson pushed for the passing of the Indian Removal Act of 1830, which provided for the resettlement of all Native Americans from east of the Mississippi to the west of the Mississippi. He also started the Bank War of the mid 1800s, which ended both the Se
