Cannabis is illegal due to many reasons such as addiction, links with other drugs, health and wellbeing of individuals, and risk to society (Hall, 1997). Society often portrays that individuals become addicted to the substance therefore becoming more aggressive and having psychotic behaviors, which lead

The Vineyard of Tribulation

Lorraine Hansberry wove a woeful tale of a family called the Youngers, A poor black family living in a tiny run-down apartment, in her novel A Raisin in the Sun. She based the name on the Langston Hughes poem "Harlem." She found the title appropriate to portray the way of life lived out by the Youngers. The family bonds are tested to great lengths and the family was divided into three parts. The leaders of each section were depicted by their attitude towards life and desire to put the family in different positions. These people were Mama, Walter, and Beneatha. Mama is the leader of one way of thinking, she desires the family to be together and for the Youngers to be one strong unit. She hopes that the insurance money will aid her in her endeavors and bring the family closer together. So that her and their dreams could come to fruition and not "Sag like a heavy load." Everyone in the family wanted unity in the end. Ruth even said that she would, Strap the baby to her back and work, so that the Youngers could ultimately afford to live in a new hous

Socrates the Skeptic

The definition of a skeptic as we know it is one who doubts the truth of something. This meaning is similar in philosophy, but it is more specific. "Skepticism in Western philosophy is the attitude of doubting knowledge claims set forth in various areas. Skeptics have challenged the adequacy or reliability of these claims by asking what principles they are based upon or what they actually establish. They have questioned whether some such claims really are, as alleged, indubitable or necessarily true, and they have challenged the purported rational grounds of accepted assumptions." (Popkin 1) When skepticism is used as a regular word and not with a philosophical purpose, it means that on a daily basis, almost everybody doubts and is skeptical about some issues and claims. Whereas when referring to philosophical skepticism, it means to doubt "the possibility of any knowledge beyond that of the contents of directly felt experience" (Popkin 1). Many philosophers are kn

Interpreting Descartes's Cogito Ergo Sum

"Cogito ergo sum", translates to "I think, therefore I am" in English, is a famous quote written by René Descartes. This proposition is a fundamental element in Western philosophy, as it is presupposed by all knowledge. Descartes' original phrase, je pense, donc je suis, which is first written in his Discourse on the Method. The argument is well-known in English as "the cogito". This proposition doubts the existence of the world. As Descartes' Mediation explains: I have convinced myself that there is absolutely nothing in the world, no sky, no earth, no minds, no bodies. Does it now follow that I too do not exist? No: if I convinced myself of something then I certainly existed. But there is a deceiver of supreme power and cunning who is deliberately and constantly deceiving me. In that case I too undoubtedly exist, if he is deceiving me; and let him deceive me as much as he can, he will never bring it about that I am nothing so long as I think t

Rene Magritte - Surrealist Artist

Rene Magritte is the most celebrated Belgian surrealist artist of the 20th century. He was born on November 21st, 1898 and was the eldest son of three. His hometown was Lessines, a french speaking part of Belgium. His family was ordinary family with a simple father who was small time businessman. Magritte's later paintings are said to be fueled by experiences and images from his own childhood. When Magritte was a young boy a balloon had caught on the rooftop of his house. This same balloon can be seen in many of his pieces such as The Age of Enlightenment. At the age of eleven Magritte befriended a young girl and would explore with her at a cemetery of a country town. One day while playing with the little girl, Magritte saw an artist painting columns and trees. In that moment, Magritte was awestruck and saw art as magic. At the age of twelve Magritte and his family moved from Lessines to Charleroi, an industrial town only thirty miles away from Brussels. Two years later, Magritte's mo

The Mallards in The Story of an Hour

The story of an hour is a short story with a powerful message. The characters are few as well. There is Mrs. Mallard, Mr. Mallard, Josephine, and Richards. This story takes place in the Mallards home during the late 1900's. The whole incident takes about an hour total. The story is written with an ironic undertone. The very first sentence shows this. "Knowing that Mrs. Mallard was afflicted with a heart trouble, great care was taken to break to her as gently as possible the news of her husband's death" (Baym,425). Then the story goes on to show how after her husband's death, Mrs. Mallard looks forward to living again only to die soon after she realizes this. It is written in third person and this helps the reader understand Mrs. Mallard and feel more sympathetic

Child Development and Parenting Advice

Bringing a live human being into the world can be very intimidating, especially if it is for the first time. Every parent questions their parenting style whether or not it is because they don't know if their style is effective or if they are being "good" parents in general. Thankfully there are thousands of books and information out there to help guide people in being a successful parent(s) including Laura E. Berk's ninth edition Child Development text book last published in 2013. There are at least ten pieces of parenting advice that can be found in Berk's book which are then supported by numerous evidence and research. Each piece of advice retains to children of different ages and stages of their life and not just one area of parenthood. The first piece of parenting advice starts in the very beginning, before the child is even born; be aware of harmful teratogens and avoid them during pregnancy. Native Americans and African Slaves

The Native Americans and Africans Slaves are two prominent groups seen in the Colonial Era with great influence, difficult challenges, and cultures that shaped the colonies into how we see them today. Both, the African Americans and Native Americans were challenged by the hardships of the whites throughout the midst of the eighteenth century. African Americans were found mainly in the North and South, while Native Americans were sprinkled all over the United States. In the Colonial Era, Native Americans had a community with a rich culture that defines them. There is a huge concept of "diversity" in American History. There was not one single kind of Native American, but many. The Southwest, Eastern Woodlands, Great Plains, Great Basin, Pacific Northwest, and Arctic and Subarctic are all areas in which the Native Americans that lived that made up the diverse native peoples. The Southwest peoples including the Hohokam, Mogollan, and Anasazi, originated out of New Mexico and So

Character Analysis - Shylock the Jew

Shakespeare was a highly respected man. Today he is regarded as one of the most influential literary writers throughout history. While this may be true, many of his pieces have been questioned and debated by scholars, religious people and the everyday person. In the late 1500's he wrote a piece called "The Merchant of Venice". It has been discussed extensively both in the past and present as to whether or not Shylock the Jew was intended to be depicted as a villain or a victim. To answer a question of this nature we must look beyond our own perspective and seek out the intended perspective of the author and audience that is was intended for. "The Merchant of Venice" was written during a time where Jews were banned from England. Shakespeare grew up in a world where inhabited solely by christians. Jews were looked down upon, they were discriminated against and many stereotypes flourished. Many people were quick to judge because they felt that the Jewish people were inferior to Christians. Heroes and Warriors in Beowulf

Throughout history, there have been my different types of heroes and warriors around the world. Unlike super heroes, anglo saxon heroes followed a list of virtues which represented the refined wisdom and ancient Germanic moral code gleaned from various ancient sources. To live as one of the True folk, they had to lead their life in accordance with the Nine Noble Virtues. In Anglo-Saxon culture, to be a hero was to be a warrior. A hero had to be self-reliant, courageous and honorable. Warriors had to be willing to face any odds, and fight to the death for their glory and people. The Anglo-Saxon hero was able to be all of these and still be humble and kind. The most important quality that a hero should have is courage. It is most important because heros can't save the world with self- esteem and being a scared at the same time. In the book Beowulf, the hero, Beowulf shows a lack of courage he has under any problem or circumstances. Grendel, Beowulfs opponent has been killing Hrothgar's

Literary Analysis - A Modest Proposal

In "A Modest Proposal," Jonathan Swift presents a literary work that attacks the vices of the English Protestants, Irish politicians, and even the naivety of the Irish themselves. Being a Protestant and native Irish himself, Swift proposes a mocking resolution to the dreadful state of Ireland in his piece. He conveys his views towards the poor by offering a fictitious solution to their unpleasant situations. He proposes the appalling idea of cannibalism among other evaluations upon his somewhat delusive explications. By the use of Swift's figure of speech, satire, and intricate details in "A Modest Proposal," he writes of unreal remedies to the real problems that Ireland possesses as a whole. The central argument in A Modest Proposal is his proposal to the poor of Ireland to halt themselves from being a burden on their country and its families by subversively replacing their actions with that of his. Which includes killing Irish infants for meals, insisting on the general idea of cann

Female Gender Roles - To the Lighthouse

In Virginia Woolf's modernist novel To the Lighthouse, she explores various themes, and the theme of female gender role is just one of them. Through her deployment of the stream of consciousness style, Woolf dives into the inner world of her characters and expresses these themes through their thoughts and feelings. In the novel, Woolf juxtaposes two images of women, one traditional and the other modern, which are represented by Mrs. Ramsay and Lily separately. This essay will argue that through exploration and portrayal of these two women, Woolf contrasts the different ideals and values of women and challenge the traditional gender role and vales. Mrs. Ramsay is the representation of a traditional woman that withholds the Victorian ideal and values. She is the "angle in the house". To Mrs. Ramsay, the most important things are her husband and children. Right from the beginning of the novel Mrs. Ramsay is portrayed as a loving mother. Mrs. Ramsay conforms to the traditional r

Women in Ancient Greece

As ancient Greek history has played such a pivotal role in subsequent cultures throughout time, that to learn about women in this society enhances our understanding of western civilization. Ancient Greece was not a united nation, but a collection of individual sovereign communities with a common language, and similar religious rituals and beliefs. Communication was difficult due to the numerous islands and mountainous terrain that bisected the communities of people. Democracy, classical art and architecture, philosophy, and drama all can trace their lineage to ancient Greece. Antique vases and statues abound with figures of women, some carrying over to modern times. The Statue of Liberty in New York harbor is based on the Greek style of depicting a female goddess. In front of the United States Supreme Court building sits justice, portrayed as a Greco-Roman female goddess. The state seal of Virginia shows a man fighting ancient female amazons, and classical Greek women such as liberty a

Shorting the Stocks of Retail Banks

The banking industry has experienced a plethora of criticism for its actions leading up to the recent financial crisis (Predatory Banking)15. U.S. regulatory agencies have increased restrictions on financial institutions, including retail banks such as Bank of America (BAC) and Wachovia, who received federal funds so that they may stay solvent (United States)11. If you own banking stock, the recently passed financial legislation may have you a little on edge as to how these banks will fare in the future (The Impact)12. If you are a short seller, then this may just be the moment you've been waiting for. Short selling is the selling of a security that the seller does not own, or any sale that is completed by the delivery of a security borrowed by the seller. Short sellers assume that they will be able to buy the stock at a lower amount than the price at which they sold short (Short Selling)1. An investor may short a stock due to speculation or to hedge, that is, to reduce their risk o

Political Economy of Justice

According to the United States Declaration of Independence, 'all men are created equal.' However, by equality, it does not mean equal punishment for people who perform equal crimes. That is evident by the number of wealthy/influential citizens who continuously walk away from trial scot-free due to crafty legal maneuvering. As it stands, it does not pay to have the bourgeoisie locked up in prison, but it does pay the bourgeoisie to imprison proletariats. The reason for this is the social climate of U.S. society. When making the most amount of money possible is the most important goal of all involved, then society will never reach its self-imposed goal of equality for all. When asked what the purpose of the prison system is, many people will probably tell you: to lock up criminals, protect law-abiding citizens from dangerous ones, to deter crime, or some other variation. Although this is all true, what most do not understand or seem to think about is the revenue/productivity being

Spiritual Assessment Interview

It is imperative that healthcare providers assess spiritual beliefs to provide the best care possible to patients. Research has shown there is a correlation between a patient's spirituality with their health and their ability to cope with illness. "Analysis of data from 42 published mortality studies involving approximately 126,000 participants revealed that individuals reporting frequent religious involvements were significantly more likely to live longer in comparison to persons who were infrequently religiously involved" (Robinson, D. 2012. P 127). According to the Joint Commission, medical organizations must include a spiritual assessment in order to maintain accreditation. Although the Joint Commission does not specify what needs to be included in the spiritual assessment (The Joint Commission, 2008). I believe the Joint Commission has required this from organizations because they have realized that hospitalized patients are at an increased risk of suffering from spiritual distress. The Joint Commission has realized that patients expect and appreciate having their spiritual needs met. For the purposes of this p

Karl Marx's Influence in Films of the 1930's

Themes from Karl Marx's Economic and Philosophic Manuscripts are clearly visible in both films Metropolis and À Nous la Liberté. In particular, the dehumanization of workers, into what Marx called a "cattle - like existence", echoes throughout both movies, albeit in different degrees. À Nous la Liberté and Metropolis both use powerful imagery to portray the alienation of workers as they are endlessly cosigned to repetitive tasks, making them seem more like cogs in a machine than humans. In the opening scenes of Metropolis, Fritz Lang uses a montage of machines and workers to draw similarities between the two. Workers are lined up in neat and orderly lines with the same clothes and posture. Their moves are synchronized, much like that of a machine. Like programmed robots, they do not communicate with each other. À Nous la Liberté opens up with a similar scene; workers in prison on an assembly line. They are all dressed the same and seated in a neat and

Children and Bullying

Growing up kids are told how much fun school is going to be, and how many fun activities they will be learning to do. Parents sometimes leave out the fact that the other children at school can, and will be mean at times. This same thing happened to a child that I cared for with disabilities. He was blind-sided when he went to school and children began to bully him because of his appearances. They just judged from his looks, and didn't like what they were seeing. This young boy didn't understand why the other children were picking on him. Bullying can be very detrimental to a child, and have a very large impact on their future. Schools give students a false definition of bullying because a lot of schools believe that bullying is simple as making fun of another child. In all reality bullying is much more than that. All students don't always know how to react when someone is bullying them. When students are bullied to a certain extent they will sometimes shut the outside world out, and th

Learning From Lincoln

Abraham Lincoln's life taught us a valuable lesson on the traits and characteristics that are essential for all leaders today. Lincoln demonstrated a great amount of qualities that made him an inspirational leader. He showed us that he was self-disciplined enough to take his mastery of language and used it to help the good of all Americans. First, Lincoln Lincoln's mission was clear in that he wanted equality and to preserve the union. He had missions and goals that he knew had to be accomplished to complete the job at hand. He faced a lot of obstacles but he remained committed to his vision and mission to create a free nation. Education leaders are accountable and must make sure that they guide, develop and implement a shared vision of learning for every student. Mission statements serve to guide educators and leaders and it's a great reminder to teachers of why they chose the teaching profession and what they need to achieve each day. Students will not succeed if teachers and le

The Terror of Declaring Independence

"The lash whistled like a singing wind. We tried to count the blows, but we lost count. We knew that the blows were falling upon our back. Only we felt nothing upon our back any longer." This realization is all too real, for the citizens of Anthem that choose to oppose the council. Because of the severe punishment, for standing out, it causes most to not have a voice in the community. The lack of having a voice in society would drive many in today's world insane, but not in the community of Anthem, where they are punished for expressing their opinion, and are scared of speaking up. Being lied to from birth is not the ideal way to grow up in most peoples opinion. Because anthems population is forced into school from birth, they have no way of knowing what is the actual truth. The council is controlling their education so that they will never have the slightest opposition. Specifically, they are taught that what has happened corrupted. In particular they focus on ho

Chinatown - Directed by Roman Polanski

In his observation on the corruption occurring in America, Roman Polanski directed the film, "Chinatown" (1974). In his movie, he focused on the topic of depression in classic film noir. The undetermined, consistent message of despair in Chinatown illustrates the frightened and disoriented American society during the 1970's. Chinatown's cinematographic components resemble the typical film noir's lighting and effects to connect it to the film's theme of despair. In film noir from the 1940's and 1950's, pictures were hues of black and white. One of the tactics Polanski used to generate depth and provide varied moods was to create shadows through the use of windowpanes. This is an example of the stylistic device of the opposition of the light and shadows. Though Chinatown is in color, the colors are primarily in hues of off- white, including tones of brown, gray and black. This coloration of the darker tones, mixed with the off white, not only maintains the basics of the "black and white" in classic film noir but takes it a step further. The "sunlight" pigments express the parched surroundings where Chinatown is situat

Slavery in the Chesapeake Region

Slavery was not a static institution, but rather one that continuously changed, having to be renegotiated from place to place and time-to-time. The institution of slavery in colonial America, mainly informed by labor struggles, implied a socioeconomic divide between societies with slaves and slave societies. In the former, slaves, multilingual and worldly-wise Atlantic Creoles were marginal to the regions economy, and slavery was one form of inferior labor among many. Conversely, in slave societies, slavery existed at the center of the economy, with a tyrannical and patriarchal master-slave relationship playing as the model for social relationships as a whole, thus negatively effecting family structure (Berlin 9-10). Slavery, never reaching stable maturity, progressively degraded the lives of enslaved people in the Chesapeake region. The establishment of the Plantation generation in the Chesapeake region caused a shift from the Charter generation society with slaves into domineering
