The World on the Turtle's Back

The narrative I will be discussing is, "The World on the Turtle's Back". This Native American story is a creation myth about two brothers who helped create humans, animals, and all other earth inhabitants. Creation myths are often defined as stories which explain how life and the universe began. In this excerpt, twins were born from their mother who then died during birth. The twins buried their mother, where she grew corn, beans, and squash. "And from her grave grew the plants which the people still use." (Page 28) The twins had tension between them and the right-handed twin was inferior to the other. "The right-handed twin was the one who did everything just as he should." (Page28) He always tried to do what was right. As for the left-handed twin, the "devious" one, he "never said what he meant or meant what he said", (Page 28) he was always lying and doing things he shouldn't be doing. The twins created bala

Sexuality and Aggression in A Woman on a Roof

Gender equality has been a challenging issue for society for generations. At the time "A Woman on a Roof," was written in 1963, women still held traditional roles in the society. Doris Lessing illustrates woman's vulnerable role in society by adopting the intolerable heat as a trigger for male aggression and presents the conflict of power between man and woman. Throughout the story, the element of heat functions as a stimulant that increases the aggressive motivations of the workers. The story takes place during the hot summer in London. Three workers, Harry, Stanley, and Tom, are working on the roof and are "all a bit dizzy, not used to the heat" (538). Stanley, who is "normally a sharp young man, quick at his work, making a lot of jokes, and good company" (541) turns into a grumpy, irritated, difficult man that makes his colleagues uneasy. The woman who is sunbathing on a roof then becomes his target to be harassed. When the weather gets hotter, Stanley's behavior

Starbucks - Business Case Study

In late October 2005, the 75th Ranger Regiment sent a young but battle hardened lieutenant fresh off a 13-month Iraq deployment to the Pacific Northwest. He had recently completed the Ranger Officer Selection Process where he completed grueling obstacles courses, rigorous physical fitness requirements, psychological tests, and a rigid board hearing. His destination was Fort Lewis, Washington, a short drive down I-5 from Seattle, Washington. Although a graduate of West Point and various military schools that included sleep deprivation as part of their programs, a veteran of a long combat deployment, and a person that had driven cross-country several times as the Army sent him from base to base, he was not a coffee drinker at all. Only when being starved in military training on a number of occasions did he drink coffee in an attempt to satisfy hunger pains. For the Starbucks marketing department, he would probably not even be a "reach." He never liked the taste of coffee, and he was even

Frankenstein and We Need to Talk About Kevin

In Frankenstein, the theme of the brutality in human nature is presented in the eponymous character, with an 'eager desire to learn' and an obsessive nature, which obstructs his personal relationships and displaces his sense of humanity. This obsession is heightened by the idea of creating life, which would give Victor the power of a deity and responsibility of a father. His sanity is hindered by his growing fascination with the 'metaphysical' alienating himself from his loved ones, leading to the abandonment his creation a 'hideous wretch' that defies Victor's expectations. The tragic result of the monsters abandonment causes the reader to consider an age-old question: "can one be born evil"? Victor's obsession stems from his hobbies, which occupy his time so significantly he is never truly allowed a normal childhood and causes him to alienate himself from his family. Cornelius Agrippa, writer, theologian and magician, influenced young Frankenstein enormo

Land Reforms in India

Land Reforms and Its Effects Introduction Land reforms include regulation of ownership, operation, leasing, sales & inheritance of land. In an agrarian economy like India where there is both scarcity and an unequal distribution of land, coupled with a large mass of rural population reeling with abject poverty, there is a compelling political and economic argument for land reforms. It has received top priority on the policy agenda since the time of independence. In the subsequent decades since the independence India has passed a substantial amount of land reforms legislations. The basic logic for land reforms in a country like India is equity. In a land scarce country with a sizable section of rural population surviving below poverty line , the case for ensuring that everyone has access to a minimum amount of land seems compelling. The basic objective of land reform measures is to enhance the productivity of land by improving the economic conditions of farmers and tenants so that they

Name, Power and Privilege

What is naming? It is the act of giving a word by which an entity is designated and distinguished from others. So that is the main objective of being named, Identification. But as society evolved throughout the ages, the norms of naming have also changed. Naming becomes much more than that for identification. It went on to define who the person is and what is his position in the society. The act of naming became co-related to several norms of the society such as caste, religion, community etc. So when the act of naming is adulterated by the influence of these social norms, the transformation and concentration of power and privilege go into the hands of a certain section of the society and thereby causes inequality. Ruth Vanita in her essay "Was Sita Mrs Ram? The Evolution of Women's Surnames" explains how naming helps in transformation of power and privilege. She also explains how the act of changing women's surnames has facilitated the continuous functioning of a male domi

Literature - Lost in Translation

The challenge in analyzing poetry written in another language is that, through translation, some of the original meaning is lost. The English language does not possess all the tools necessary to interpret something best said in Russian or Japanese. A poem, in its original language, displays the style of the poet and the beauty or the poem which can be literally lost in translation. Through the poet's literary devices and use of language, a poem comes to life, the quality which is lacking in most translations of the same. Because the meaning of the original poem is unknown, one can't judge a translation on its proximity to the original. A translation is deemed superior based on whether or not the poem sounds like a translation and how well the author preserves the beauty that the poem was intended to have. George Reavey's "First Ice", a translation of Andrei Voznesensky's Russian poem, can easily be pin pointed as a translation. The poem possesses a specific rhythm where sen

The Letter 'A' in the Scarlet Letter

In Nathaniel Hawthorne's, "The Scarlet Letter," the major characters revolve around the letter mentioned in the title. After discussing Hester's punishment for her sin, the townspeople believe the most suitable punishment would be to make her wear a scarlet letter, "A" on her bosom for the rest of her life. This would serve to remind her and all of those around her of the seriousness of the committed sin and how ashamed the sinner should feel. By that point, the objective of the letter is to stand for "Adultery", as a way of labeling Hester. The letter ends up becoming a symbol, and it affects the characters in different ways throughout the book. When characters show a certain feeling towards the letter or behave in a certain way about it, it is clear for the reader that that is how the character feels towards the sin itself. The townspeople question Hester on who the father of the child is, and she refuses to tell them. Later on, the reader finds out that her

Short Story - The Train of No Return

It was a bright sunny day in Belgium, and I had a nice breakfast and greeted my parents. I lived a casual life, and everything was nice and peaceful. It was fall of 1944 when everything started to go sour. As I was walking down the streets with my parents to pick up some food, a few soldiers approached us, they were known as the Gestapo. We tried our best to avoid them, but we were soon exposed. They told us to come with them. They took us to a train area, and we were later loaded into the train. My parents kept telling me that everything was going to be fine, but in their eyes I saw fright, and terror. Something told me that they knew what was happening, but I was still wondering where exactly we were going.   Approximately three hours later, we were exhausted, hungry, and dehydrated. They loaded us off the train, and after hours of darkness and humid conditions, it only got worse as we were suddenly exposed to light. As I opened my eyes, I saw rectangular buildings e

Moral Compass of Huckleberry Finn

In "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn," by Mark Twain, Huckleberry Finn is influenced by many different forces that shape his moral compass and affect his values, beliefs, and actions. In the beginning of the book, Huck learns what it means to be "sivilized". Huck does not enjoy to be "civilized" so he breaks away by running away. Huck also fights with two main voices, one siding with society, having him turn in Jim, and the other is keeping Jim safe because he is a friend. Huck learns from Widow Douglas what it means to be "sivilized" and he could not stand acting that way so he ran away the first time. To be "sivilized" you need to believe in God, be religious, but Huck has no interest in this, "After supper she got out her book and learned me about Moses and the Bulrushers; and I was in a sweat to find out all about him; but by-and-by she let it out that Moses had been dead a considerable long time; so I didn't care no more about him;

Population Growth and World Development

Population growth affects world development. When talking about development, we usually refer to the economic development of a city, country, or even the whole world. Before the industrial revolution, the world's population stood at around 1 billion, not more. After the rapid economic change, the population growth is described as an 'explosion'. But it doesn't even compare to the growth of consumption of resources, especially fossil fuels. This chart describes the ecological footprint up until 2008 and two scenarios that could happen. One scenario being that we continue on as we currently are and the ecological footprint would drastically increase until we need resources equivalent to 3 earths! This means only 1/3 of the population will have enough water, enough food and less than that will have proper sanitation/hospitalization. This is an enormous jump from today's conditions, because today 6/7 of the population meets their basic, consumer needs. The other scenario is a rapid reduction where we will only require the resources of one

Compulsory Voting in the UK

Universal Suffrage has been the right of every person in the UK over the age of 18 for 45 years. Over the last 15 years, voting numbers in Britain have seen a sharp decline. In 1992, 77.7% of the electorate voted, compared to just 65.1% in 2010, (Commission, 2013). As a result of the First Past the Post (FPTP) voting system it is often the case that a majority of the population do not actually support the Government. Now for the first time, non-voters are the largest single group outnumbering those who supported the winning party and calling in to question the whole election process by their non-participation. 'The nature of the free vote is that, if parties want to win, they must run an election campaign on a message of hope and encouragement' (Herald, 2011). If we implemented compulsory voting, political campaigns would be forced to become more engaging to large proportion of the population that they currently don't represent or associate to. However it is a dereliction of the

Analysis of Sonnet 18 by William Shakespeare

Likely the most influential writer in all of English literature and certainly the most important playwright of the English Renaissance, William Shakespeare was born in 1564 in the town of Stratford-upon-Avon in Warwickshire, England. Despite the unproven conclusion that his plays were written by somebody else, Shakespeare must be viewed as the author of the 37 plays and 154 sonnets that bear his name. The legacy of this body of work is immense, and has resulted in becoming so influential as to profoundly affect the course of Western literature and culture ever after. A sonnet is in verse form and has fourteen lines of iambic pentameter. Shakespeare's sonnets follow the pattern "abab cdcd efef gg". All the lines in iambic pentameter have five feet, consisting of an unstressed syllable followed by a stressed one. The majority of the sonnets (1-126) are addressed to a young man, with whom the poet has an intense romantic relationship. The poet spends the first seventeen sonnets tr

Car to Car Communications

Abstract Car-to-car communication aims at increased driving comfort and safety. Moreover, it changes the role of vehicles from mere transportation means to "smart objects". Despite many R&D activities in the last years, this technology still poses multiple challenges on the wireless transmission and network protocols. Aspects like efficient message dissemination, network scalability, and information security mechanisms are still major research areas in the area of vehicular ad hoc networks. In this paper we present the potential of future car-to-car and car-to-environment communication systems, introduce the major research challenges in this field, and provide a selection of current research results. CAR-TO-CAR Communication Introduction The goal of the CAR-TO-CAR Communication Consortium is to standardize interfaces and protocols of wireless communications between vehicles and their environment in order to make the vehicles of different manufacturers interoperable and also

Ceramic Flooring and Hardwood Flooring

Are you getting ready to buy a house? Do you want to remodel your kitchen? Are you having trouble deciding on which type of flooring to use. When selecting flooring for a home, there is a lot for the homeowner to think about, such as the many materials to choose from, the placement of the flooring, and traffic and use of the room. This essay will explore two popular types of flooring materials- ceramic and hardwood. It will compare the materials; discuss which area of the home they are best used in and a few of the pros and cons. Ceramic tile is made from sand, natural products, and clays. The materials are molded into specific shapes and then fired in an oven. Ceramic tile comes in two types; glazed and unglazed. The types of ceramics are manufactured the same way, there is really no difference. They only variance is that glazed tiles undergo an extra phase in the firing process where layers of liquid glass are added by means of extremely high temperatures (BDU Ceramic Tile Colleg

Fictional Blog Entry of Nora Helmer

Sitting on the cozy sofa, having a cup of hot chocolate, writing up a blog...I haven't had such a nice afternoon since... a very long time. My daughter went to our neighbors' birthday party while my husband, Torvald, as usual is on a business trip. Sorry for not posting a blog lately. It is my little daughter Emmy that always kept me occupied. Indeed, the stress is also work related. Torvald and I work in the same bank, but of course, he is the manger and I am at a position of much less importance. He works very hard, staying up really late and I guess his position as manager is evidence of effort well spent. However, this means that everything related to the girls is left to me. He never asks about their activities and doesn't show that he cares about their daily lives, let alone my feelings. There's no question that the girls are the most important. I've hired a nanny to care for Emmy when we're away, but I'm worried that we're not fulfilling our role as parents and that we're too pr

Loss and Retrieval in The Stranger

In the story "The Stranger," by Albert Camus, the belief that "the themes of loss and retrieval are at the core of Mersault's mythology and that they illumine the notion of exile to which he returns so often" is widely discussed. He does lose his mother to death and does seem to retrieve his identity, but does either of these impact his exile? Neither one of these themes has anything to do with the exile of Mersault; rather it is Mersault's own attitude for the exile he experiences in the story. The first theme that is said to play a role in Mersault's exile is the theme of loss. Though Mersault does lose his mother in the beginning of the story, it does not affect how he acts throughout the rest of the story and he continues on like nothing ever even happened. "Then there was the church and the villagers on the sidewalks, the red geraniums on the graves in the cemetery, Perez fainting, the blood red earth spilling over Maman's casket, the white flesh of the

Key Technologies in Surgery

TECHNOLOGIES IN SURGERY Sharlee Walker HHS 440 The topic that I have chosen to do my final paper on is Technology in Surgery. The reason I have chosen this topic is because of the surgeries that I have in the past. The newer technology for surgery makes recovery time a lot faster. Most surgeries you had back several years ago you would have to stay in the hospital overnight or even several days now days it is same day surgery and you go home to recover. I will be talking about the different kinds of technologies that are available for patients now like laser surgery, robotic surgeries, and computer-assisted surgeries. Plus there have been a lot of new technologies in knee replacements and even heart surgeries. Computers have come a long way since they for came out and they have helped doctors a great deal. They help keep track of their patients and their progress after surgeries. Plus making surgeries not so evasive, like before open heart surgery they had to cut your whole ch

Entrepreneur Interview Project

For this entrepreneur interview project, I aimed to reach out and learn from an innovative business owner that I can potentially emulate in the future. I spent a lot of time looking for an entrepreneur that started his business/company sparked from his own creative mind. Interviewing someone that had their own restaurant, ice cream parlor, or dry cleaning business definitely would have sufficed, but I don't believe I would have benefited greatly from that. I was fortunate enough that my friend's dad, Jon Coss took the time out of his day for me to interview him. Jon Coss incorporated his technology resources and his innovative mind to create Pondera, a fraud detection company that has been around since 2011. Mr. Coss's path in creating this ingenious firm was not only intriguing, but also inspiring. Listening to his path from a regular worker to a preeminent CEO was very neat. He informed me that starting a business can be extremely stressful and difficult at first which is evident

The Era of Good Feelings

The "Era of Good Feelings" was a time of complete republican dominance over the federalists which was further established by James Monroe's goodwill tour where he was even welcomed by Federalist New England. It was time of greater nationalism but Sectionalism also began rising throughout the country and eventually played a bigger role in the country than nationalism. The So Called Era of Good Feelings was actually not filled with good times and thus the label of this era is not very accurate. Issues with Sectionalism including problems with the bank of the United States, the Protective Tariff, internal improvements, Missouri Crisis, and the Denmark Vesey incident were all reasons why this era wasn't so good. In Document A, John Randolph points out a major problem during the era. The government was treating the poor agriculturalists unequally compared to the wealthy manufacturers. The government preferred manufacturers over farmers and thus worked to benefit them more. The farmers, bec

From Those Wonderful Folks Who Gave You Pearl Harbor

The book that I chose for my book report is, From Those Wonderful Folks Who Gave You Pearl Harbor by Jerry Della Femina. This book gives the insight to the world of advertising in the 1960's. It speaks of all of the things that is assumed of the advertising world in that time, thanks to Mad Men, and confirms that the advertising world during that time was almost exactly as it is portrayed in the TV series. Beyond the sex, drugs, and outlandish behavior, From Those Wonderful Folks Who Gave You Pearl Harbor is about the most fantastic advertising campaigns that will ever exist, and gives some subtle pointers on how to make it in the business. At first, I did not feel like I was going to take away much from this book, I felt like it was just Mad Men on paper. Don't get me wrong, I thought that it was very exciting to read, but I wanted more out of the book itself. However, this book ended up making me feel a lot of passion towards the advertising industry, passion I had never had before

Personal Changes for a Healthy Diet

Is health the key to a happy life? If so, I am on my way to a whirlpool of depression. Since the seventh grade, I have devoted my free time to basketball, and other enjoyable fitness activities. Half the reason I started these hobbies was my desire to look like the guys in the muscle magazines. Although I managed to shed the excess pounds, I never learned the importance of nutrition. I simply cut back on my favorite fast foods, and exercised till exhaustion. Due to this, I have continued my unhealthy eating habits, whenever I felt I deserved it. Since I understand the concept of progress, I have planned to take small steps towards a healthier life. I'm making a promise to myself to incorporate more spinach, and dark green vegetables in my diet for at least a week. Finding healthy food is never a difficult task when living with a mother like mine. Due to her healthy ways, the refrigerator has been remodeled into an organic hoard. Ever since my grandmother was hospitalized due to a lif
