An Overview of Chinese Politics

As Yasheng Huang has noted, China's political economy is highly centralized [1]. As the principle, the party delegates its authority to the government, but it still holds the appointment and removal power of ministry and provincial leaders. Thus, the center actually has strong control over local government and the overall policy making process. The government bureaucracy is also organized hierarchically, meaning that official bureaucratic rank is important in the bargaining process [2]. The formal rank of the implementing bureau will highly affect the effectiveness of the policy. The failure of policy coordination with different economic agencies for WTO membership in the early round best illustrates the effect of ranking. As a temporary committee, MoFTEC, the chief negotiating body on WTO, finds itself unable to coordinate with other agencies that have a higher rank. Therefore, from this organizational structure, it is easy to conclude that the economic poli

Counseling: Case Study

It could be argued that by its very nature one who counsels does so in order to reach a solution, a cure, or a process by which a person or system can move forward. Many people do not realize that systems get sick, become dysfunctional, and ultimately veer of the path that was once the strategic plan. The situation becomes problematic when the organization or entity was created to serve the needs of others. In many instances, systems derail because of poor management, complacency, or other factors that cause the entity to lose focus. Senge (1990) contends that in order to understand why this happens, one has to understand that all aspects of a system are interconnected therefore, it is conceivable that even a person performing the most medial of tasks can have either a positive or a negative impact on the entire system. In fact suggests Senge (1990), positive ramifications are not limited to the internal workings of a system, events can occur internal to a system that can have an impac

The Accounts of the Creation

Redaction has shown us that there are two accounts of Creation in the opening chapters of Genesis, chapter 1 and 2.1 The first account is better known although it is easy to mix the two stories. In the Creation account of the first story, there were six days of creation with one day of rest (Genesis 1:31). In the second story, all forms of creation appear to occur in one day (Genesis 2:1). In the first, God simply spoke things into existence (Genesis 1:3) and male and female were created together (Genesis 1:27). In the second, God "used dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul " (Genesis 2:7) and created 'woman' by taking a rib from man; "and while he was sleeping, he took one of the man's ribs."(Genesis 2:22) Her

Theories of Attachment

Sigmund Freud put forward the notion that a child goes through their development in 'Psychosexual Stages'. Freud viewed this theory as a child needing to change their erogenous zones as they age. With this he claims that if a child transfers its libidinal energy, meaning the emotional energy which is usually sexually related, successfully then the energy will move on to the next zone. Yet if there are problems such as frustration or overindulgence, then the energy will become either transfixed in the zone it is in or it will fall back to an earlier zone. This will mean that development will be impaired. There are altogether five stages in Freud's theory, they are: 1) The Oral Stage. This is from birth to 18 months old. 2) The Anal Stage. This is from 18 months to 3-5 years old. 3) The Phallic Stage. This is from 3-5 to 6-8 years old. 4) The Latency Stage. This is from 6-8 to puberty. 5) The Genital Stage. This is from puberty to death. Freud believed that from birth to 1

Growing Managers: Group Case Analysis

The motivational models which would prove most effective in turning the Phoenix sales team around and setting the team on a more prosperous path, would be motivational models focusing on changing behaviors and promoting results. Implementing the Goal-Setting Model and the Reinforcement Model would accomplish both feats. M----- needs to exert authority and assertiveness over her sales team. She needs to assess her team members' strengths and weaknesses in order to effectively and efficiently assess the job design and job analysis based on the employees' skill level. This process sets up goal specificity. A---- is a go-getter and a top seller of the annual and perennial color business, but he has no interest in selling cut flowers. R------- could set considerably high goals for A---- for the color business and task someone else with selling cut flowers. Richardson could make G---- responsible for getting a database up and running to manage the customer service and administrative s

EU Regulation of OTC Derivatives

This month, the European Commission introduced rules to regulate the over-the-counter derivatives. Firstly, it is important to understand what derivatives are and then examine the proposed rules and some of the issues that will need to be addressed. A derivative is a financial instrument that derives its value from another financial asset. It is a financial contract with a value linked to the expected future price movements of the asset it is linked to " such as a share or a currency. There are many kinds of derivatives, with the most notable being swaps, futures, and options. Derivatives can be classified into two types: 1. Over-the-counter (OTC) derivatives: These derivatives are custom made and are not traded on any futures exchange, but rather they are traded on over-the-counter markets, also known as the OTC market. 2. Exchange-traded derivative contracts (ETD): These are derivative instruments that are traded via specialized derivatives exchanges or other exchanges. A derivatives exchange is a market where individuals' trad

A Brave New World by Aldous Huxley

"A Brave New World", by Aldous Huxley, uses a fine irony that calls into question the very foundations of society, being exposed to light the ills of a society in decline, pointing out its horror and its enormous vacuum. With an intellectual tone: Brave New World reflects on the reality we live in, a world plagued by war, famine, terrorism, where perhaps what is most desired by man is happiness and social stability. These are the two values Huxley transmits to us through Brave New World, in which he proposes travel to a future world where society is divided into castes (Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Delta and Epsilon), and in which the education of children is based the pavlovian conditioning and Hypnopaedia so that when they are adults they feel happy to belong to their caste and perform their jobs. It is a world in which there are no feelings and no taboos, in which the most obscene words that can come out of a person's mouth are "father" or "mother", because the individuals are obtained from a process of fertilization in- vitro and where people will be governed for life by means of a drug called "soma". A world apparently perfect and ideal for it

The Roles People Played in Nazi Germany

In response to the laws and policies implemented during Hitler's rule, various countries and individuals chose either to act or not to act. These choices, in turn, placed these countries and people into one of four categories: perpetrators, bystanders, resisters and rescuers. Through a number of case studies, one can identify what may have motivated individuals or large groups to respond in the way in which they did and the consequences that arose as a result. A perpetrator is an individual who is directly or indirectly involved in the execution of wrongdoing. In Nazi Germany, there were many perpetrators ranging from those who drove the trains loaded with the persecuted to concentration camps and those who signed the orders to have those individuals sent to said concentration camps, to the Einsatzgruppen and the Nazi officials who ran the camps. These people may have been driven to act as they did for a number of reasons; whether out of fear or out of blind obedience, as is often the case, with many Nazi Party officials claiming to have simply been "following orders ". On Becoming a Better Writer

Dear Mrs. Matthews, English has always been one of my favorite subjects. Ironically, my favorite aspect of English has been its simplicity. It was not until taking Writing Workshop that I found the task of writing successful essays to be more complex than I had previously believed - and I've discovered that this complexity can add depth and quality to my work. This course has been a joy to be a part of while forcing me to focus on my writing skills. Throughout the course, I was able to recognize patterns in my writing style and learn to modify my writing in accordance with the criticism I have received. Since the first semester, my skills as a writer have improved as I made key improvements in proofreading. I've made an effort to use a multitude of English prefects as t

The Media and Our Violent Society

"...the media help create and continuously reinforce the "social scripts" that adolescents act out in their daily lives. Much of what goes on in entertainment (movies and TV) is a reflection of what goes on in the news; the media echo messages young people hear at school - in particular, themes of violence and sex are constantly reinforced" - John Merrow, 1999. Introduction Violence in America, perpetrated by criminals, mentally unstable and easily influenced individuals produce effects that are more far-reaching and destructive to society than the physical damage they produce. It has been proposed that the media, through news reports and fictitious depictions of violence, directly influence others to commit such acts themselves. It is proposed that, similar to a contagious disease, witnessing or reading about a violent crime often can pass the idea of such behavior along to individuals who may never have conceived of such a thing on their own. Human behavior reporting influences fut

An Overview of Alcoholism

In many countries, alcoholism is a major health problem. The treatment method of controlled drinking as opposed to abstinence is a continuing cause of controversy in alcohol research to this day. The US is different from Europe in its acceptance of controlled drinking as a goal of treatment: "in the US alcohol dependence is typically depicted as a 'recurring disease' and the 'successful abstainer' as a 'recovering' though never 'recovered' alcoholic" (Coldwell, 2005). Depending on the alcohol abuse patient's individual characteristics, either controlled drinking or abstinence is chosen as a treatment. Alcohol treatment in Canada, however seems to incorporate both mechanisms as shown in the study by Rush and Ogborne (1986).The study states that goals for one third of clients who were non abstinent were accepted depending on whether it was a residential or community-based outpatient service. Other effective methods in treating alcoholism are pharmacothe

Procurement at Betapharm Corporation

1) The global pharmaceutical industries had experienced average sales growth, and lower growth was predicted for the next few years. Pricing pressures from managed care and government programs, and the loss of leading drugs' patent protection would also give an impact to pharmaceutical sales. To deal with these issues, a lot of pharmaceutical companies decided to implement a better way for procurement management, so did Betapharm - one of the largest pharmaceutical companies. Currently, Betapharm had applied the Emptoris ePass system, and expected the improvement on both global hotel contracts and malic acid products, which were two primary costing of Betapharm. 2) Betapharm Corp. had to learn the advantages and disadvantages of accepting ePass system, and to decide its appropriate sourcing method for glo

Head Over Wheels

I decided to read "Head Over Wheels" because I wanted to read a short story. Once we were done with our last SSR book, I spotted this book and I ended up choosing it. In addition, the cover appeared to be two brothers and one was in a wheelchair, so thought to myself that the book would be intriguing. Since the book had around two-hundred pages, I selected to read Head Over Wheels. The setting of this book takes place in Boston, Massachusetts in 1960. The main protagonists include twins: Kerry and Terry, Jen, Kerry's girlfriend, Roxy, Terry's girlfriend, and the mother and father. The main conflict in Head Over Wheels is when Kerry and Terry get involved in a major automobile accident, where the driver was killed and Terry suffered severe injuries to his skull and was paralyzed from the neck down. The climax of the book is when Kerry yells at Terry in frustration over the phone because of is stubbornness. Kerry also is mad at him because since Terry has been recovering, Jen has bee

Our Obsession with Reality Television

When you think of reality TV what comes to mind? Why do people get so hooked to this type of programming? Reality TV is one of the most popular television programs out today. Cynthia M. Frisby explores reasons why millions of viewers are addicted to reality TV in her essay "Getting Real with Reality TV." Frisby speaks about how different factors affect the viewers and make them want to watch reality TV shows. Frisby first discusses how genres and how media gratification makes viewers want to watch reality TV. The main genres are game shows, dating shows, and talent shows, shows that are generally cheaper to produce, so if they dont make high ratings they are replaced. Frisby then states, the success of reality TV is because, "it plays off real-life concern-looking for love, competing to win a job or big prize, or becoming a millionaire-situations (or dream

The Root of Evil

Al-Qaeda is the brainchild of Osama bin Laden. There was a strong connection between Osama bin Laden as a person and the influences in Osama's life that contributed to the ideologies of the global terror network Al-Qaeda. Osama bin Laden has been able to manipulate Islam to fuel his jihad. By analyzing the origin of bin Laden's distorted view of his faith, we gain further insight not only Osama bin Laden into but also the infrastructure of his terror network. Al-Qaeda is a multifaceted network that requires a solid infrastructure to thrive; the skills Osama bin Laden acquired throughout his youth in his family's construction company have attributed to the success of Al-Qaeda. Propaganda is a strategy that has been used throughout history as a motivational tool, and bin Laden had mastered the art of using propaganda to fuel his jihad. My Opinion of Django Unchained

Slavery. Satire. Comedy. Do these things go together? Should they ever? In Quentin Tarantino's film, "Django Unchained", these three elements were combined for entertainment purposes. What's entertaining about slavery? Slavery is a sensitive topic and to exploit it in a satirical way is insulting to African Americans who had to undergo it. This movie is worthy of condemnation because it demean the importance/seriousness of slavery, makes fun of factual events and groups of people that existed during the time of slavery, and has no life connection or relativity to the one who chose to make fun of this subject. Slavery has to be one of the most serious and crucial topics in our history including the Holocaust, and other discrimination based events of our time. The use of satire baffles me when it comes to the movie's concept. This movie is about slavery and you choose to make fun of it by having comedy? Last time I checked, slavery wasn't a laughable matter. A famous director, writer, actor and producer, Spike Lee said, "All I'm going to say is that it's disrespectful to my ancestors. " I agree with him because

Military Couples and Divorce

There are differing factors that play into the success or failure of a military marriage. Department of Defense officials announced a huge jump in the divorce rates, saying that cases doubled from 5,658 to 10,477 between 2001 and 2004 among Active Duty Officers and Enlisted personnel (2010). In the past year there have been over 13,000 divorces in the military. This makes the military divorce rate four times that of the national average, yet it is still being overlooked by American society and is being ignored by the military itself. Statistics There are several million-service members of the military today: 50% Under the age of 25 85% Males 10% Dual Military (both spouses are in the military) 70% With one or more children The divorce rate among active duty Army has increased from 3.3 percent in 2007 to 3.5 percent in 2008.Among the Marines the divorce rate increased from 3.3 percent in 2007 to 3.7 percent in 2008. Diabetes Mellitus

This paper deals about the study of diabetes mellitus, the pathology, type of diabetes, further complications if not controlled and management for the prevention of this disease. Diabetes refers to a set of several different diseases. All types of diabetes result in too much sugar, or glucose, in the blood. To understand why this happens it helps to understand how the body usually works. When you eat, your body breaks down your food into simpler forms such as glucose. The glucose goes into your bloodstream, where it travels to all the cells in your body. Your cells use glucose for energy. Insulin, a hormone made by the pancreas, helps move the glucose from bloodstream to the cells. Pathophysiology of Diabetes Mellitus further explains the concept how this disease works. Pancreas plays an important role of the metabolism of glucose by means of secreting the hormones insulin and glucagon. These hormones where then secreted by Islets of Langerhans directly to the blood. Inadequate secre

Rebuilding the Second City

Tragic events such as fires, natural disasters, and wars impact the way society functions; this can affect the gridlines of a city, the government, and society. Fires, in particular, have done their part in reshaping America, and one of the most infamous fires was the great Chicago fire of 1871 that changed Chicago into the modern city that it is today. Major tragedies such as the Chicago fire end up in textbooks and history books, but do these writers tell the full story? As the story goes, on October 8, 1871 at approximately 9 at night Mrs. O'Leary's cow kicked over a lantern in the barn and sparked a fire that spread quickly and destroyed 17,420 buildings and over 2,100 acres.1 Being completely destroyed, Chicago quickly rebuilt itself into one of the most popular and economically important cities in the United States. Most textbooks portray the basic story of the cow kicking over the lantern, which burned Chicago down completely, and later was rebuilt. What condition was the city

My Life in Malaysia

From what I remembered, the lush green of paddy field from the north part of Malaysia is where I was born. When I was young, my family was poor and we lived in a small house in Kedah. Kedah is known as countryside with the largest rice production in Malaysia. During the paddy season my mom always brought my sister and I around the village to capture the spectacular nature isolated from the greenish paddy field. By the time when my brother was born, we moved to Alor Setar. Alor Setar is a small city and it is known as the state capital of Kedah. That was when I began to start my kinder garden, and I met Tom. Tom was a solemnly silent person with a curly black hair and he also wore a pair of hearing aids therefore he always got teased by some classmate. Despite that I am an outgoing and a supportive person. After I helped Tom when he got the bullies, which make us become good friends. Not to mention, we are just like every best friend, always shared our toys and jokes. Few years later
