Waitangi and New Zealand's Constitution

For many years, the status of the Treaty of Waitangi in New Zealand's constitution has been the topic of many heated debates between politicians and academic sources, with Maori and the Waitangi Tribunal. As it stands, the Treaty of Waitangi is considered to be the founding document of New Zealand's government, however it is not currently a formal part of the constitution and therefore is not enforceable by law. This essay will be discussing the essential features of a constitution, specifically New Zealand's, the role that the Treaty of Waitangi plays, and finally, whether or not it should be made into a formal part of the constitution. Based on evidence discussed in this essay, it is evident that the role of the Treaty of Waitangi is sufficient and it's status should remain the same, mainly due to the confusion it could cause due to there being two versions of the document which says contradictory things. A constitution is one of the most important features of any government as it

Causes of the Spanish Civil War

Before the Spanish Civil War, there were several issues that caused tension and division in Spain. The main ones appeared because the government tried to attack those that had too many privileges in society. But in doing this, it angered those sectors of society that had the potential to fight back (the military, industrialists, land owners and the Roman Catholic Church). These four, very powerful bodies, were unwilling to support the republican government. They were also aware that there were countries in Europe that would be willing to give support to their plight as many nations in Europe were scared of communism and Stalin's Russia. Fascist Italy under Mussolini would be an obvious ally as would Germany once Hitler had got power in January 1933. There were also economic, political and regional causes that led to the war. The weakness of the government was a major factor in the instability of Spain, causing as a long- term cause, the war. From 1871 Spain had been a constitutional m

Generational Homogeineity in American Theatre

TABLE OF CONTENTS Statement Chapter 1: A Personal Perspective on Generational Homogeneity Chapter 2: Generational Homogeneity: The Empirical Research Chapter 3: Reasons for Generational Homogeneity: A Perspective from Young Adults Chapter 4: Dissemination Challenges Chapter 5: Solutions Conclusion Statement Throughout my life, both as a theatergoer and practitioner, I have been aware of an apparent generational homogeneity in American theatre audiences. My thesis will, firstly, investigate to what degree this perception is accurate, across the spectrum of American theatre. Next, I will explore the causes that may be fueling the lack of generational diversity in theatre attendance. I will then proceed to an examination of the challenges faced by American theatre in effectively disseminating its work to a broad generational demographic. Finally, I will examine the strategies and solutions being employed by the theatre community in an effort to expand theatre's visibility to,

Cisco ERP Implementation Case Study

1. At the start of the case, Cisco's information systems are failing, yet no one steps forward to lead the effort to replace them. Why is this? Why were no managers eager to take on this project? Although it was clear by 1993 that there was a significant misalignment between the capability of the legacy UNIX-based system and the business demand based on growth, no one within the company had led an effort to replace the old system. One reason was likely due to the lack of direction for such a project, as the CIO had originally instructed each business unit to select their own application and timing of implementation. This type of decentralized decision-making was unfamiliar at Cisco, a company who thrived on standardization and centralization. As such, no one manager of a business unit was eager to be the first to go to the board for approval to invest a large amount of time and money to replace the legacy system with an application for their own functional area. To do so would be inh

Contemporary Urban Development in Australia

Abstract This paper examines the proposal to redevelop an area in South Sydney against some general principles extracted from a selection of classic urban design theorists. The ACI site development is part of the largest redevelopment project in Australia at present, that is, the Green Square/South Sydney Growth Center. The overall project will revitalize 275 hectares of largely redundant industrial area spanning four South Sydney suburbs. This paper investigates the claim that the overall project will set new benchmarks in urban design and planning. Specifically it analyses the urban design principles underpinning the master plans for both the ACI site and the overall Green Square Draft Structural Master Plan against principles derived from some well known urban design theories. Initially, a set of principles for quality design is extracted from a review of the work of a range of urban design and planning theorists including Camillo Sitte, Christopher Alexander, Jane Jacobs, William W

Germany and the Cold War

Germany's condition after the Second World War was harrowing. The destruction was evident; entire families were separated or destroyed, food was scarce, towns and cities lay in ruins, the economy had plummeted and unemployment was at an all-time high. Other European countries faced the same emergency; in fact, the blow to Europe had nearly decimated the continent. But France and England (along with non-European countries the United States and the Soviet Union) staggered out of the war as victors, willing to bring aid and support to the broken, struggling and battle-scarred nations. Soon after WWII, Germany became divided into East and West, communist and capitalist, GDR and FRG. The country could not exist under one administration since the occupying powers wanted to achieve their own political ideas. Germany, and especially Berlin, had to be the battlefield of the ideologies and became "both a symptom and a cause of the Cold War. "1 After the war Germany was sectioned into four occu

The Student Voucher Debate

A new school voucher program that would use government funding to subsidize private school education is an issue that is taking America's public education system by storm. The controversy over school vouchers covers a wide array of arguments, from constitutional freedom to economic theories. President George W. Bush's program, "No Child Left Behind", stirred this controversial debate, as schools became more accountable for student achievement, as well as their lacks of achievement. If adequate yearly progress was not made, parents with students in failing schools could have the option to move their child to a school, public or private, which was excelling. As students move, the funding for that student would have to move as well, leaving some local public schools in a financial crisis. Should parents have the right to obtain the best possible education for their child? Should government funding for the student be used in private schools? Should the government have the right to set

The Book Thief by Markus Zusak

In literature, death is often portrayed as a heartless presence that grips ahold of anyone standing in it's way. In the "Book Thief"," by Markus Zusak, it is quite the opposite. In this book, death is the omniscient narrator viewing himself as a cheerful, amiable, and affable presence who uses distractions to keep himself sane. To deflect him from his sadness and never-ending duty, he often fixates on the color of the sky at the time of each human death. Interestingly, in some ways, death seems to be humane. We see death evoking pathos such as sadness and joy and he even reveals his states of depression, having a job that is disheartening as it gets. Death states, "I'm always finding humans at their best and worst. I see their ugly and their beauty, And I wonder how the same thing can be both."(p.491) You may have asked yourself, what human does he speak of that he has seen the best and worst of themselves. Well, let's begin with the book thief herself, Liesel Meminger. She is a h

My Life Living in the Ming Dynasty

Introduction The Ming dynasty, a ruling dynasty of China for 276 years from 1368-1644 AD, play an integral part in the history of Chinese culture. The era is considered to have been one of the most successful internationally and domestically in both economical and political aspects. This paper is my biography as a woman living in the era regarding the historical background of China, through my eyes and encounters, from the perspective of the Ming dynasty. It is an evaluation of my living status and social norms in the imperial times in China including the norms that the society held upon regarding men and women's statuses compared. I base the evaluations in line with the knowledge and understanding of the Confucian ideologies, through the  information  and facts in reading that I learned from class as well as elsewhere as I grew up in China watching and reading television and paper documentaries regarding this  important piece of history for not only the Chinese but all mankind ci

The Story of The Beatles

One of the most celebrated and influential bands in the history of rock and roll music, is The Beatles". Their fame was attributed to their amazing creativity, their wide range of appeal, and most importantly, their politically themed lyrics. The band remains one of the most successful rock bands in the history of recorded music. This paper examines the story of The Beatles, addressing questions such as: Who were the Beatles? How did they come together as a band? How did they make it big? For how long were they at the top? What is the story behind their struggle? The Beatles The story of the Beatles began in 1956, a period when the city of Liverpool, England had been hit by a craze of skiffle music. Skiffle is a genre of music close to jazz, which was produced by a combination of rudimentary instruments such as guitars, packing case single string bass and washboards. This was the brand of music that influenced the Beatles. The band began as a small group of musicians, known as the Qu

Tending to Hazardous Materials

The article that I reviewed was titled "Flame Tip Propagation with Assisted Flow along Fuel-soaked Ground"." The article is from the Journal of Fire Sciences and not only has great detailed illustrations of the experiment, supporting charts and their findings but very detailed information on how they set-up the experiment, the procedure used, what the team finding were in very scientific terminology. The article alludes to a possibility of finding a better way of dealing with ground soaked fuel and the spread of flames for emergency responders after studying how the air flow mix with the high and low velocity fuels along with what happens with different ground temperatures. The article covers how the assisted airflow mixes with the heated fuel and how it was influenced by the combination of all of these factors and the outcome. The key points in this article are the flame spread or lack of flame spread based on the d

Theater: The Master and His Assistant

Throughout history, dramatic theater has evolved, changing and adapting to the preferences, economy and political atmosphere of the current society. However, one specific aspect of theater has remained constant; the protagonist of story line often requires the help of an assistant. Whether it's a superhero and his sidekick or a socialite and her personal secretary, there is frequently a loyal companion who faithfully remains at the side of the main character - and the success of the protagonist relies on their aid of his/her sidekick. Playwrights of Italian theater applied this concept throughout many of their works, often utilizing the concept of a young master and his dutiful servant. Whether the young master finds himself in a troublesome situation, or is too love struck to develop a scheme in order to be with his lover, the servant is there to make sure his master is successful in his ventures. Thus, it is no wonder that the relationship between the young master and his servant i

Pancreas Transplantation

Abstract Pancreas transplantation evolves as a strategy in management of diabetes mellitus. The first pancreas transplantation was performed in 1966 by the team of Dr. Kelly, only three years after the first kidney transplantation. The first pancreas-kidney transplant was reported in 1967. In 1979, the first's living-related partial pancreas transplantation was done (Larsen, 2004). The endocrinologist remains involved in the care of the pancreas transplant recipients even when glucose is normal, because of the numerous of issues encountered post transplantation. A multidisciplinary team is needed to maximize long-term quality, as well as quality of life for pancreas transplant recipients. The primary indication for pancreas transplantation is to provide a vital source of insulin for patients with severe insulin depended diabetes mellitus. Many of this patients have diabetic nephropathy and the pancreas transplantation is commonly (90 % of all patients) combined with simulta

High Tech Computer Corp. (HTC) in Myanmar

High Tech Computer Corporation (HTC) is widely known for its creative product development capabilities and high ability-price ratio. It was, at one time, the fastest growing mobile phone company of the decade, reaching it's peak revenue in 2011. Since then, HTC has faced a devastating decline in sales. It fell from the Top 10 powerhouses of the mobile phone industry and disastrously lost the smart phone battle to its main competitors, Apple and Samsung. Having its main market saturated, the management decided to enter the Myanmar (also known as Burma) mobile phone market to improve it's sales growth in a last ditch effort to resuscitate the company. In it's first effort, HTC partnered with a local distributor and opened a flagship store in the capital of Naypyidaw. The economy in Myanmar is slow and is besought with uncertainty. So why did HTC choose this struggling country to play a key role in it's rebuilding process? Political, Economic, Social and Technological Analysis (PEST)

Prader-Wille Syndrome

Nine years ago, my family was blessed with the birth of my nephew Rocco. We were excited to have the first grandchild in the family and couldn't wait for him to be born. At his birth, he was having difficulty breathing and wasn't able to nurse. The doctors weren't sure what was wrong with Rocco, so he was sent to the CHOP (Children's Hospital of Philadelphia), where they conducted numerous tests to see if they could find the cause of what was causing these problems. After a long line of tests were completed, the doctors set up a meeting with our family. They told us that Rocco had Prader-Willi Syndrome. Nobody in my family had ever heard of this illness and to us, it was as if the doctor was speaking a foreign language. My family wanted to know Prader-Willi Syndrome is, how was it diagnosed, and what we could do as a family to help Rocco as he lived with this syndrome. And most of all, we wanted to know if Rocco would have an independent and full life. Prader-Willi Syndrome (PWS) i

The Definition of Crime

There is much deliberation on the definition of crime, because it ia viewed differently in every culture. However, W. Ivins (1911) offers an excellent starting point in defining the root meaning of the word. He stated, "we start with the fundamental fact that crime is the point of conflict between the individual and society. The war is perennial and grows more intense with the complexity of social relations and of human nature." But contemporary psychologists have been able to establish three common views for defining crime: consensus view, conflict view and interactionist view. Looking at the consensus view, which st

Taco Head and Mr. Entwhistle

The short stories "Taco Head"" and "Mr. Entwhistle" both" convey an important message: sometimes it's necessary to overlook a person's wrongdoings and remain calm, even if it's difficult. The protagonists and the stories are Kate and Sofia, both placed in a difficult situation when they are verbally abused - Kate by the substitute teacher, Mr. Entwhistle, and Sofia by her classmates. Both girls take the highroad, choosing peace over violence and as a result, their battles are eventually won. In the story "Taco Head"", Sofia is verbally abused by her classmates for being a Mexican American. Every day, Sofia's mother would "get up at five to make a fresh batch of flour masa. She'd roll out and cook one tortilla at a time until she had a big stack of them, nice and hot, then she'd fill each one with beans that she'd fried in bacon grease and flavored with chopped onion in her huge cast-iron skillet."" Her mother would then pack two bean tacos for Sofia's lunch each day. It wasn't that Sofia disliked the tacos, but that "some kids in school called all Mexican Americans beaners, so the last thing I (Sofia) needed was to stand out li

The Long Process of Treating Sex Offenders

Sex offenders are a highly diverse group of people, but all are individuals who have at least one of the following crimes in common: have committed violent sexual assault on a stranger, have had inappropriate sexual contact with a family member, have molested a child or any other inappropriate and criminal sexual behavior. Currently, in the United States, there are a total of 722,499 individuals who are registered sex offenders (U.S. Census Bureau, 2010). However, this number does not reflect every person who has committed a sexual offense. Research shows that a lot of cases go unreported which can deem inaccurate numbers regarding the amount of sex offenders in this country. This paper explores different populations of sex offenders: females, males, and juveniles as well as controversial empirically based treatments used to help the treatment of sex offenders. Researchers were surprised to find out that Group Therapy combined with certain techniques is the number one treatment used

The Attica Prison Riot

The Attica Prison Riot happened at a time in American history when the turmoil surrounding, racism and persecution had come to a focal point. It was 1971, 41 years ago the deadliest prison riot in our nation's history had come to fruition at the Attica Correctional Facility in upstate New York. The 1960's were a time where civil rights for blacks were finally delivered and supposed equality was granted, however although that may have been the case for those outside of prison walls, the prisoners inside them all across the country but especially Attica felt that they did not have basic human rights and were unjustly treated. They felt that their 8th amendment which protects against cruel and unusual punishment was being violated. They were being treated differently because of their ethnic makeup, because of the color of their skin and the situation they had found themselves in being locked up, they felt that they were being mistreated and had lost many of the rights they had before b

My Road to Studying Bio-Medical Science

Picture the family and community I came from Beijing, China. A happy family with me being the only child. My past thirteen years was living in the nurture home my parents built for me. I always childishly believed everybody in this world is as perfectly lucky as I am. Until one day my grandfather took me to a clinic he went for back massage therapy. One of the "magical massagers " there inspired me to studying biomedical in college. "Why is this place is so crowed?" I asked my grandfather. "They are waiting to get treated by the magical doctor." He answered and smiled mysteriously. "Next one please" the front office finally called us in, as I push open the cold white door I did not expect that I am entering a new stage of my life. The therapist's room was no difference than any other room I saw in the

Determination

Your friends, co-workers, and those who know you will probably not remember the nice things you did for them ten years ago. They may not remember the day you brought them a cup of coffee after a long day at work, or the time you dropped everything to give them a ride to the doctor's office. For the most part, the only thing they'll most likely remember is your character and personality. Having a good, pleasant, and positive personality is important. It is better to be known as a person you can be proud of than someone who you should be ashamed of. Who would like to be remembered as snobby, selfish or a delinquent? Why not be remembered as a person who is honest, determined and responsible? Bottom line is, in your life time, you will encountered many different things, and different people and with these three traits, it will make your life much easier. Honestly plays a huge role in your life, but being honest is not easy. Honesty is an important attribute, because it is one of the many ways people judge you by. If people look at you, and can see that you are no

The World's Response to Terrorism

After the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center, the word "terrorism" took on a new meaning. Before the attacks, terrorism was certainly taken seriously but after the tragedy on 9/11, the term became synonymous with fear and anger. The word "terrorism" is reflected in the free world's attitude towards security and protection. Millions of people are more fearful, anticipating another attack and wondering if they or a loved one are in danger. Officials who oversee public places such as malls, subways, airports, bus stations, churches and government buildings have taken precautions to ensure that their facilities are safe and protected from acts of terrorism. After the destruction of New York's Twin Towers, most people who live in westernized countries have taken a viewpoint that Muslims, in general, are anti-American, vengeful, devious and dangerous. They believe that all young men from Islamic countries are trained to be terrorists or, at the very least, cultivated to

Evolution and Natural Selection

One misconception regarding evolution is that it is only the result of natural selection. What many people don't realize, is that there are actually five contributing factors that result in the evolution of a species: mutations, gene flow, sex, small population size, and natural selection. Genetic variation is very important because it provides new genes for natural selection to act on. It basically provides the basic raw material for evolution. Without genetic variation evolution cannot occur, it is a prerequisite. There are three main sources of genetic variability: Mutations, Gene Flow and Sex. Mutations are changes in the DNA. Gene flow is the movement of different genes from one population to another. Sex introduces new combination of genes to the gene pool. Mutations are the one of the main sources of genetic variability. Mutations are any changes in the DNA sequence. Mutations mainly arise when DNA is not properly copied during mitosis and meiosis. Mitosis and meiosis are mec

Surviving My Writing Class

Walking into my English Writing class, I thought I was going to earn an easy "A". At first, I assumed that this wasn't the appropriate class for my skill level; thinking I already wrote at at a college level. I was frustrated at the fact that I would have to go through a semester of nothing but a repetitious review of my basic writing skills. That was not the case. In fact, I struggled with my first writing assignment and received a non-passing grade. I was startled at my poor work and began to realize that I actually needed writing instruction. Fortunately, I had a considerate, accommodating professor who worked with me and helped me work on the clarity of my papers and more precision when creating an effective sentence. When I started English Writing, I was more conscious about the quantity of my paper than the quality. I was goal oriented, striving to reach the minimum amount of pages, filling my paper with a series of ideas that didn't truly connect. Rev
