Civil Rights in To Kill a MockingbirdRobert Mulligan's film classic, "To Kill a Mockingbird" is based on the celebrated novel of the same name, by Harper Lee. The film is set in the 1930's, the era of Lee's childhood. Harper Lee was born in Alabama, and her father, a lawyer, defended two black men accused of murdering a white storekeeper, and it is from this account that Lee created a story that would challenge and inspire generations. Throughout the film, lawyer Atticus Finch, attempts to stand on a moral playing field, despite the radical opposition of the townspeople and his courtroom peers. He believed that all people, no matter their nationality, deserve to be treated justly. The concept of equality that Finch espoused was beginn |

The Price of Eating OrganicAlthough organic food products are thought to be generally free of hormones and pesticides, there is little evidence to suggest that paying higher prices for such products lends to any significant health benefits. The goal of this paper is not to discredit organic food as unnecessary or a waste of money; undoubtedly organics appeal to both growers and consumers for a variety of reasons. My intent is to show that eating mostly organic foods does not necessarily translate to increased health benefits. Nationally, the average price paid for one gallon of organic milk and one dozen of organic eggs is $11.54. In contrast, those same items produced through conventional methods are priced significantly lower, coming in at $6.38. This represents 94% price difference for a gallon of milk and 61% for a carton of eggs. These price comparisons are very similar when looking at other items within four of the major food categories. The table below depicts the retail price differences between popu |

Analysis of Criminal and Civil CasesThis essay will review criminal and civil court litigation. I will explain the differences and similarities between the two methods of law. The parties involved in each of the criminal and court cases, as well as the burden of proof required for each type of court case, will be stated. The risks involved for the defendant, in criminal court and in civil court, will be discussed. To conclude, the author will state whether or not a defendant could stand trial in both the criminal court and civil court. An example of this situation will be presented. Civil litigation deals with private disputes between parties. Criminal cases deal with acts that are offenses against society such as murder and robbery. In both criminal and civil court cases, the lawyers involved make money. Civil and criminal cases both can be resolved without the defendant having to go to jail (Henton, 2013). If the parties involved reach an agreement prior to trial, civil cases can be settled out of court. In addition, |

Zimpfer vs. Palm Beach CountyBryce Zimpfer filed an age discrimination suit against Palm Beach County after being passed over for an employee relations manager position(Bernardin, 2012). Had Mr. Zimpfer been promoted, he would have had a dramatic salary increase (Kowalski, 1985). In order to establish a case, Mr. Zimpfer and his attorney, Lynn Szymoniak, provided the following evidence: Mr. Zimpfer was older than 39 and therefore protected under the Age Discrimination in Employment Act of 1967, was able to perform his job to a satisfactory level, and the position was filled by a younger person(The Age Discrimination in Employment Act of 1967). Further evaluation of his performance would be needed to determine if he had, in fact, been a good candidate for the employee relations manager position. Mr. Zimpfer's legal counsel sought the expertise of Marcy Josephs, PhD., to construct a report detailing the qualifications of all c |

One Morning in My BackyardThe dock in my back yard is small, built of wood above the sometimes-murky water of the 20-acre lake behind my home. The dock was built long before I moved here, and although it is still sturdy, should probably be rebuilt soon in the years to come. From my dock, I've observed and recorded the wonderful sights and sounds of nature; from colorful insects, beautiful herons, and a wide variety of fish. My dock is aged, but has provided much enjoyment to my family and I over the past years. A creak and a groan can be heard as I walk up the ramp to the wooden gate that keeps my little, tan chihuahua from running onto the dock and jumping into the shallow water. As I step onto the old dock, two large dragonflies buzz past my head as they play, what seems to be, an exhilarating game of tag. |

Occupation and Protest: Documenting Social UnrestAt a protest, it's easy to feel as if the event is just a short moment in time, especially when the government ignores your demands. However, Guy Atkins, a Goldsmith University graduate, has found a way to tackle the transience of protests with his "Save Our Placards" projects. On March 26, 2011, the "March for the Alternative" took place in London. It was the largest demonstration in the country since the Iraq War. With the "Save Our Placards" projects, Atkins has managed to get a selection of the most unique placards off the streets and into the permanent collection at The Museum of London. At the museum this coming Monday, they'll be holding a discussion on the topic of Occupation and Protest and the documentation of Social Unrest. The panel will include Turner Prize winner, Jeremy Deller, Kurt Barling of BBC London, Morning Star journalist, Rory Mackinnon, and Dr. Cathy Ross, The Museum of London's Director of Collection's. The Benefits of Arranged MarriagesAccording to the rock band, the Beatles, "All You Need Is Love". Is this true? Is a love-based foundation the most important factor in creating a lasting, healthy relationship? In Western culture, the most common prerequisite for marriage is love. However, relationship experts around the world believe that the secret of long-lasting marital success isn't so much love as it's communication, the sharing of core values, education levels and the support of close family and friends. With that in mind, it stands to reason that arranged marriages not only makes sense, but are a prudent way to approach the union of a man and a woman. Arranged marriages can foster an environment where there is positive family involvement and stability. "For most of history, it was inconceivable that people would choose their mate on the basis of something as fragile and irrational as love,"" according to historian Stephanie Coontz. Arranged marriage can be a term so taboo that it's become synonymous with fo |

Rest in Peace, DadIt was 6:30am on a Monday morning in Okinawa, Japan. I was at work taking the children to the breakfast room when my cell phone went off. Normally, it would be my husband telling me that he just dropped off our daughter at preschool and he was on his way to work, but not this morning. The text message was from my mom, and it was hard to understand. The words that could make out were, "Your dad had a stroke and you need to come home ASAP."" At that moment my heart sank. What did my mom mean? How could I get home? I told my supervisor there was an emergency and I needed to go home. I hurried to my car and tried to compose myself before heading home to call my mom. When I got home and walked in the door, my son said, "What are you doing home. " I told him that I got a text about grandpa and it was serious. He wanted to stay home from school but I told him he needed to go and that everything would be okay. Once he left I called my husband to tell him about the text. He said that he got the same text and the first thing we should do was call home a |

The Australian AborigineAboriginal custom laws were developed and based on aboriginal relationships to the land and the concept that all properties and belongings were owned by the entire community. All items were collectively used and land was not owned by a particular tribe. The laws that governed aboriginal life were based on unwritten rules and lessons garnered from the "Dreamtime", kinship ties, relationships, ritual traditions, sacred and secular laws and clan consensus. The law from an aboriginal perspective was no different from daily "life" choices. The laws covered rules, morals, religion and daily activities. Sacred law taught what was acceptable behavior, enforced customary laws, governed the land, and oversaw the performance of rituals - this oversight was entrusted to the elders of each tribe. Secular law emphasized the responsibilities and rights of individuals in the tribe and in their respective families. It also reinforced the importance of their land for clan and individual purposes. Improving the Welfare SystemThe American welfare system is a misguided program. Many people need this aid due to long-term illness, injury or temporary financial difficulties. However, there are those who abuse and take advantage of this privilege. It's a well-known fact that many people collecting welfare abuse drugs. It is also safe to say that often welfare dollars are spent on fast food, alcohol and other unnecessary items. Where does the government draw the line between helping those truly in need and giving free handouts to those who could work their way to a good financial life for themselves. America is already in a huge deficit and the welfare program is only adding to the problem. The government hands out 131.9 million dollars in welfare checks every year - and this amount does not factor in the percentage of welfare recipients who also receive food stamps. Currently there are 4,300,000 on welfare and 46,700,000 on food stamps. Prior to the Great Depression of the late 1920's and 1930's, there was |

Crime by George Lippard"Crime", by George Lippard is full of many intriguing characters. Lippard introduces many of these characters under negative circumstances, but then, throughout the story, he reveals different sides of each character and the reader is given the chance to see a more sensitive or affectionate side to them. By showing that these characters are not all inherently bad, Lippard is asserting that these characters' social surroundings influence who they will become, concluding that a lot of the "evil" " they may contain is because of past hurts they've experienced. There are numerous characters in "Crime" who verify this conclusion, but the best examples are Devil Bug, Mr. Livingstone, and Bess. Devil Bug is a very unsettling character and is introduced to us in a very negative way. Right from the start, his appearance is one of pure ugliness (44). As more pages reveal who Devil Bug is, the reader learns that Devil Bug is as ugly on the inside as on the outside. He finds joy in causing other |

The Destruction and Salvation of Coral ReefsCoral reefs are living organisms that live and thrive in our world's oceans. Coral structures are made up of thousands (and even millions) of creatures called polyps that live in a calcium carbonate skeleton. Single celled algae live inside these coral polyps and coexist with them. Coral polyps provide a safe place for these single celled algae to live and grow and the extra food that the algae create, the corals can live on. Coral reefs are more than just another creature in the ocean. They play many important roles: protecting our coastlines and providing food for fish and other sea creatures. Coral reefs are normally located parallel with coastlines and act as a speed bump for waves. They protect the coastline from damaging waves and surges caused by storms and tsunamis. Without this protection, many coastal communities would face the risk of damage or possible destruction from these waves. Coral reefs are not just important to our coastlines but are also important to fish and |

Influence of an English TeacherIn his essay "The Art of Eating Spaghetti"", Russell Baker explains how a high school writing assignment changed his life (4). At first, Baker was bored by anything that had to do with his English classes. He loved to write, but he hated the compositions that he had to write in class. He described them as "agonies for teachers to read and for [him] to write (3). When Baker was assigned to his third-year English class, he expected "another grim year in that dreariest of subjects " (4). His teacher, Mr. Fleagle, was described as a very "prim " or very proper person. When Mr. Fleagle assigned the informal essay, Baker put it off and waited until the night before it was due to start on it. He thought about the time he first ate spaghetti and immediately thought of a topic for his essay; he titled it "The Art of Eating Spaghetti ". Although he wanted to write about the great memory he had, he knew he wouldn't be able to write it the way Mr. Fleagle expected it to be written. Therefore, Bake |

My Expressed ValuesAs usual, when I began this assignment, I quickly realized that I had underestimated the amount of thought that was needed for it to be completed to your satisfaction and my need. On the surface, I am examining my behaviour and aligning it with the things that I say that value. The problem is, that when I examine my behaviors, they are different depending on the setting that I am in, and I have noticed that sometimes those behaviors conflict with values that I express. For instance, I say that I highly value honesty and fairness, and I do, but in some of my personal relationships, I have been less than honest, especially about my expectations and needs. In some of my personal relationships, I espouse that I am highly independent and really have it together, I am strong, capable and will not be a dependent to anyone. My behaviour on the other hand would suggest that I am capable, but would rather not have to be strong and independent, I behave like I am looking for someone to save me |

Summary of The Crucible by Arthur MillerDuring the Salem witch trials of 1692, over 200 people were accused of being witches and nineteen were killed for it. In the play "The Crucible"" by Arthur Miller, Miller portrays the story to be "a reflection of the Communist witch hunts of its time" (Miller) to help people understand what was going on. Miller was around during the cold war when people were accused and jailed of being "covert communist " with little prove. In the "The Crucible"," people are accused of being witches with no real proof and are getting imprisoned and some killed for it. The play is a reflection of the events of the time but the personalities and traits of the characters in the play are what make the witch trials possible. The characters in the play display the themes pride, distorted justice, and guilt. Pride, the praise and self-respect a person has for one' self, causes people to do irrational things. Giles Corey who has pride in his family is sentenced to be pressed to death until he confesses or d |

Pearl Harbor: An Ignored Attack"Yesterday, December 7th, 1941 -- a date which will live in infamy" -- the United States of America was suddenly and deliberately attacked by naval and air forces of the Empire of Japan. Five Japanese bombers attacked Pearl Harbor in Hawaii, killing more than 2,400 Americans, destroyed or heavily damaged eight battleships, three cruisers, three destroyers, almost 200 airplanes, an attack that brought the U.S. into war the following day; a surprise attack that put the U.S. right in the middle of war. If the U.S. knew of the attack before it happened, there may not have been as many casualties and the forces at Pearl Harbor would have been able to better defend itself against low gliding torpedoes and kamikaze attacks from Japanese air fighters. Many signs of the attack (that proved to be costly) were ignored by those in leadership. With the Japanese takeover of Northern French Indonesia (September, 1940), the U.S. placed an embargo on the Japanese, halting all shipments of oil, steel |

The Winning Lottery of Life or DeathSimply hearing the title of Shirley Jackson's "The Lottery", automatically conjures an image of a a lucky person who wins an instant landslide of money. Although there is certainly suspense in "The Lottery", it is mostly based on the concept that you don't know, at least in the beginning, what's in store for the "winner of this town's lottery". When the reader gets further into "The Lottery", "it becomes clear that this story is full of horrific possibilities and it is these possibilities that make it more interesting. For instance, the little boy Davy, too young to even hold his slip of paper properly, could have been the one to "win" the lottery instead of his mother.
