Notes on Cell Phones, Texting and Driving

"Motorists who use cell phones while driving are more likely to engage in additional dangerous behaviors such as speeding, driving drowsy, driving without a seat-belt and sending texts or emails," according to a survey conducted by the "AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety". "Driver use of cell phones impairs reaction times and roughly quadruples crash risk. Additionally, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that more than 3,000 people are killed and nearly half a million are injured each year in crashes involving distraction. This is likely an underestimate given the challenges associated with determining the role of distraction in crashes." "AAA and the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety have long been leading advocates in educating motorists about the risks of distracted driving. AAA recommends that motorists turn off their phone before driving or pull over to a safe place to talk, send texts or use email. AAA also has launched a legislative campaign to advocate

Extensions for Community Healthcare Outcomes (ECHO)

Dr. Sanjeev Arora, a hepatoligist, professor of medicine, and director of project ECHO at the University of New Mexico realized there is an abundance of patients living with Hepatitis C virus in rural areas of New Mexico who do not have access to specialists like himself. Even the patients who are able to see a specialist often have a long wait to be seen; there is eight month wait to see Dr. Arora (Becker 2011). [Dr. Auroa] began to think of ways to multiply his expertise so more doctors in the state could provide the same level of care for patients with Hepatitis C as he could" (Becker 2011). As a result Dr. Auroa developed project ECHO; Extensions of Community Healthcare Outcomes. Project ECHO uses video conferencing "to link specialists at university medical centers with community-based providers to provide any training, advice, and support they need to deliver evidence-based best practices to patients locally" (Pfeifer 2012). Local providers simply describe their cases to the s

The Apollo Program

The Apollo program was designed to make history; land a man on the moon for the first time. It was a race to the moon involving Americans and Russians. "I believe that this nation should commit itself to achieving the goal, before this decade is out, of landing a man on the moon and returning him safely to the earth" this speech from President John F. Kennedy on May 25, 1961, marked the official start of the Apollo program. The space race is one of the most important reasons that a lot of money has been spent on space research over few a decades. United States lost and won, because Soviet Union launched the first satellite in 1957 and sent the first human into space, but Americans won the race to send a man to the moon, Yuri Gagarin. Apollo program demonstrated human technical ability to explore. Project Apollo cost 24 billion dollars for the United States. But this was worth it; they brought back around 2000 rock samples from space and won the space race against Soviet Union. The Apo

Brown Versus the Board of Education

As educators, one cannot say how significant and important "Brown vs. Board of Education"" was to the educational system of the United States. Without this challenge to ones civil rights, young children would still be segregated and not given the same rights as other colored children in America. Even after the thirteenth was ratified and put the end to what we know as slavery, states enacted laws which contradicted the constitution. These laws known as the Jim Crow laws were used to prevent people of color from using the same facilities, riding the same buses, and going to the same schools as whites. http://www.uscourts.gov/EducationalResources/ConstitutionResources/LegalLandmarks/HistoryOfBrownVBoardOfEducation.aspx. There were several cases that went before the United States Supreme Court before Brown, and they all had significa

Revie of a Classical Piano Concert

I attended a classical musical concert performed by pianist Christine Whelchel and presented by the Columbia State Lyceum and Department of Music. The concert was held in the Cherry Theater at Columbia State Community College. The building looked like a normal academic building. The audience was dressed very causally and it consisted of mostly students. I had the opportunity to hear a few beautiful piano pieces performed by a very talented pianist. My favorite three of her performances were Dreaming, op. 15, no. 3 by Amy Beach, Children's Corner Suite, Movement 6: Golliwog's Cakewalk by Claude Debussy, and Intermezzo, op. 116, no.4 by Johannes Brahms. This was the first classical concert I have attended, and I enjoyed it thoroughly. Musical Selection #1: Dreaming, op. 15, no. 3 by Amy Beach Musical element #1: Rhythm: The tempo was predominantly fast. There were a couple of slow parts but most of it was fast. I normally like

Art From Around the World

Buddhism is a religion that has different virtues that guide those who practice it. Along with Hinduism, it's the most common religion practiced in Asia. Buddhism is known for the beautiful arts that dot places of worship, especially in Temples and homes. It is said that having some of the statues of gods in one's home is a sign of good luck and prayer to the gods is one of the most common practices in Asia (Washington, DC,2005). The arts of Buddhism are some of the major cultural attractions that stand out when one visits these places of worship. If we take for example, Temples in Japan, they might have statues of the founder of Buddhism formerly know as Siddhartha. He changed his name to Buddha and had teachings that he passed on to his followers. The teachings were referre

The Importance of Dogs

U.S. customs dogs "Rocky and Barco, " were so good at patrolling the border that the Mexican drug lords put a three hundred thousand dollar bounty on their heads. This is an opposing view on the essay on "The Dog Delusion"," by April Pedersen. Let's see what April has to say about dogs in her essay. Opposing point I: One of the most absurd examples of anthropomorphism I have seen is a funeral for a drug-sniffing dog. The Sherriff's department went all out with a motorcade, flag draped casket, bag piper's playing "Amazing Grace," a eulogy from a pastor, and a rose-adorned easel on which the dog's portrait rested. My Counter Argument I: According to Wikipedia, A police dog that died in the line of duty is often given a full police funeral. Some Police Departments make the dog's sworn officers with badges and IDs. I once seen a k-9 officer chasing a suspect, and the officer ran around the house and slipped. Consequently, the suspect raised his weapon and started to shoot the police of

The Diary of Lady Murasaki

"The Diary of Lady Murasaki" provides a private look into her world as a lady-in-waiting and the courtly life she lived along with her daily activities and expectations of woman during the Heian era. During this time, the ideal woman was one who did not try and display how knowledgeable she was. They were expected to be absent-minded and soft compared to being intellectuals. This diary also explains how Lady Murasaki's experiences contribute to our sense of history as well as how she thought and Murasaki Shinkibu was a Japanese writer in the late Heian period. She was born into the Fujiwara family as the daughter of the governor of a province and her father was also a well-known scholar. When Murasaki's father was appointed governor of the province of Echizen on 1004 it was arranged for Murasaki to enter the service as a lady-in-waiting. During her life in court Murasaki started a diary in 1008 and continued it for 2 years. Her diary tells the reader h

Amusement Park Ride Safety

Is that roller coaster safe? I stood in line for an hour to experience it - my heart racing, my hands sweating and white-knuckled. But in all honest, when I excitedly walk through the amusement park, I can't help but worry that one of the rides may break down with me on it. According to USA Today newspaper, "There have been some terrifying accounts recently, especially in Knott's Dairy Farm in Anaheim, California, where the occupants of the ride were left hanging upside down for hours," (Baker, Section A-12, December 30, 2012). "From rollers coasters to bumper cars and ferris wheels, amusement park rides attract massive crowds, with an estimated annual attendance of nearly 300 million at the more than 420 fixed-site theme parks in the United States, according to 2008 data from the International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions website"(U. S. Rides, Article On Line www.IAAPA.org). According to Beth Robertson with the International Association of Amusement Parks and Attra

The Augustus of Primaporta Sculpture

The Augustus of Primaporta is a freestanding marble sculpture in the round. The sculpture is a larger than life 6' 8" and is an example of early Roman imperial portrait sculpture. This sculpture is currently displayed in the Braccio Nuovo of the Vatican Museums in Rome, Italy. This marble portrait of the first Roman emperor, Augustus, is a very naturalistic statue. Although the sculpture was carved in the early first century, at the time of the Roman empire, Augustus stands in a Classical Greek contrapposto pose. While the sculptor of this piece is unknown, we do know that he or she followed the canon of the High Classical Greek sculptor named Polykleitos in pose, idealization, and proportion (Stokstad, Cothren 174). The Augustus of Primaporta statue sends not only a message ofthe Emperor Augustus as an accomplished military leader, but also clearly suggests that the emperor is a divine being. The Augustus of Primaporta is a three-dimensional sculpture. The statue actually

Controversies in Healthcare - Cardiac Arrest

Cardiac arrest is a highly lethal condition, and is the number one killer of Americans each year. The first step in treating an out of hospital cardiac arrest is quick identification of the problem. Once confirmed, treatment is immediate CPR.(6) CPR is designed to artificially keep blood flowing when the heart can no longer pump. Continuous high quality CPR is difficult, even for trained professionals. Manual chest compressions requires strength and stamina, and CPR fatigue is common. Adequate perfusion of the heart and brain is needed to reestablish spontaneous circulation and to achieve survival with good neurological outcome. Manual chest compressions impair blood flow to the vital organs. Blood flow to the brain is reduced to approximately 30-40% of normal, and only 10-20% of the normal blood flow to the heart. (2) Initial studies of the Zoll AutoPulse have demonstrated an improved blood flow to the brain and heart as compared to manual chest compressions. (3) According to a 2006 report in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) a study concluded that standard CPR work

Germany - A Leap Across the Pond

There are multiple differences between the sociological characteristics of Germany and this land that we call "free"". Although time has changed the face of Germany over the last century, they have managed to keep an abundance of their culture intact. As we take a look at the major differences and the few similarities of our two countries, we need to keep in mind that the German culture has remained strong and true to their beliefs along the way. Social and cultural differences have made the United States what it is today - the melting pot of the world. Without these differences our country might be a lot more like the mother land of 300 years ago. Germany on the other hand has kept stride with the advancements while keeping true to their heritage. For centuries, the world has watched as religion changed and molded modern day civilizations. For example, Martin Luther founded the Lutheran religion and this religion still inhabits more than a third of the German population (at least a t

The Theory of Multiple Intelligences

Throughout the last century, the Theory of Multiple Intelligences (MI), has become an innovation in teaching and learning English language. The Theory of Multiple Intelligence is taught to represent ways in which individuals understand and perceive the world, solve problems and learn. Dr. Howard Gardner, a psychologist and professor of neuroscience from Harvard University, developed the theory of Multiple Intelligence's (MI) in 1983. Gardner's theory challenged traditional beliefs in the fields of education and cognitive science. According to Gardner, human beings have eight different kinds of intelligence that reflect different ways of interacting with others. Each person has a unique arrangement or profile. Even though we each have all eight intelligence's, no two individuals have them in the same exact arrangement. For example, a child who learns to multiply easily is not necessarily more intelligent than a child who has more difficulty multiplying. The child who takes more time

Genetic Information

Historical events and individuals play a significant role in how the future is shaped. The ones that have the most impact are the ones that can still be applied to the present. In the present day, many events and individuals will be remembered, such as the 9/11 tragedy, Boston Marathon bombing and the Sandy Hook Shooting. These events have made a negative impact on society and because of that are ingrained deeper in people's minds. However, positive contributions to society endure less notoriety in the limelight. Writing a textbook highlighting these positive contributions can preserve how these contributions have changed humanity directly and indirectly. In the fields of science and medicine, the general public has little understanding of the latest discoveries and breakthroughs that are having or will eventually have a significant impact on humanity. Explanations of scientific data have to be 'dumbed down' for the public to understand and in doing such, meaningful information can b

Mercedes Benz - Business and Social Ethics

The CEO of Mercedes-Benz (China) Ltd., said, "Pursuing the cause of public welfare is not only the responsibility of an enterprise, but also precondition that determines an enterprise's survival. Promoting and becoming a part of China's social harmony and rapid economic development is our obligatory responsibility and proactively shouldering social obligations is an important part of our long-term commitment to the Chinese market." Mercedes hopes to be one of the most fuel efficient and eco-friendly car manufacturers on the planet. They have a new Hybrid S-Class coming out that runs on 4A cylinders making it more efficient than any of their other models. Is Mercedes-Benz keeping up with the competition? Yes. They have a new concept vehicle called the F-125 which is said to be one of the most advanced cars to ever hit the market. Up until the present, companies are playing more and more important roles in different regions, countries and even across the world. Promoting global exch

Notes on the Cardiovascular System

Circulation has two systems: pulmonary circulation, from heart to lungs and back, and systemic circulation, from heart to body tissues and back. Arteries carry blood away from heart Veins carry blood back to heart Arteries become arterioles which become capillaries Capillaries is where exchange of nurtients, gases, and waste occurs Capillaries drop off carbon dioxide to be exhaled and leave with oxygenated blood Veins have thinner walls than arteries, have valves, are more numerous, hold more blood than arteries. Blood in veins is deoxygenated and has higher levels of CO2 Veins carry DeO2 blood because they are dropping off O2 to tissues then go back to heart/lungs where we exhale CO2 Base of heart proximal to head Apex of heart is distal Right side of heart collecting blood from body and sending it to lungs to pick up O2 and get rid of CO2 Left side of heart collect blood from lungs and pumps it through body Heart has four chambers Two small upper chambers called atria Two larger

A Look at the Constitutional Amendments

The struggle between state and federal government is a large part of American history. The individual states have often tried to prevent a strong central government; even before our forefathers could build the framework of our constitution. As evidenced by the civil war, the states failed in their attempts to hold political dominance and the federal government prevailed. The 13th, 14th, and 15th amendments aided the North's vision of reconstruction. The amendments provided a series of advantages for the North's ideal Union. More specifically, the 13th amendment abolished slavery and provided blacks with an education. The 14th amendment allowed anyone born in the U.S. or a naturalized person to become a citizen and the 15th amendment forbade any state from preventing anyone the right to vote on basis of race, color, or condition of servitude. In other words the 13th amendment was among the first steps in freeing black slaves and giving them knowledge through education so they could have the opportunity to rise economically.

Sexuality in Alias Grace by Margaret Atwood

Margaret Atwood's novel "Alias Grace" is based loosely around the historical character of Grace Marks, a jailed murderess. The novel depicts her childhood and describes the events that led to the murders - crimes she may or may not have committed. Sexuality seems to be the main focus of many events of nearly every character in this story. This period in history was indeed marked with a peculiar fascination for the opposite sex. By briefly examining the role of women during the Victorian Era when these historical events take place, we can better understand how it's importance ties in with the novel. Sexuality is frequently expressed throughout Alias Grace and it can be broken down into three different elements: repression, beauty, and love versus lust. Strict attitudes toward the standards of men and women are displayed throughout. When Grace is picked up by Mr. Kinnear at Richmond Hill, she is surprised that he allows her to sit up front with him and she states, "I was quite embarrass

Finding My Father

I will never forget the last phone call I got from my father. My mother was downstairs cooking dinner and I was upstairs in my room getting my things together for school. We only had one phone in the house and it was downstairs. The phone rang and I remember thinking to myself it was probably my brother calling, as usual, to see if dinner was ready. My mother hollered for me to come downstairs to answer the phone. I figured she must've really had her hands tied, so I ran downstairs trying not to miss the call. "Hello,"" I said, still trying to catch my breath. "Yes hello, is this Monica?"," I was in shock and my heart started to race because I had rarely heard my father's voice since he moved back to Santiago, Dominican Republic seven years earlier. His voice was very distinctive to me and it was one that I could never forget. I hesitated to answer and as my hands started to sweat, I said, "This is her. I haven't heard from you in a very long time."" Then he started to tell me that he

The City of Refuge Men's Shelter

Have you ever shown concern for a person holding a "Will Work for Food" sign on a street corner? These people are known to most as homeless "bums", but in my paper I will share what one community did to see beyond the homelessness and help these people. Idaho is known for having one of the highest rates of unemployment in America, meaning that more and more people are losing their homes and becoming homeless - the majority are disabled veterans. The number of unemployed citizens in Idaho in 2011 was 25,568 (8.5%). With that being the case, I found The City of Refuge Men's Shelter, directed by David McKinney. I had shopped at the thrift store a few times but never taken time to see what they really did until I spoke one on one with Dave. The City of Refuge Men's Shelter provides services to men that have lost the roof over their heads for different reasons; they're going through a divorce, just getting out of jail, are recovering addicts or simply unemployed. David said that he finds h

An Argument Against Epiphenomenalism

Frank Cameron Jackson is an Australian philosopher who focuses primarily on the "philosophy of mind". Jackson is most known for his argument against physicalism, and for a version of dualism called epiphenomenalism. Dualism is a theory in philosophy of mind that assumes that the mind and body are not identical - that mental phenomena, the inner workings of our mind, are separate from the physical body. Dualism is a Cartesian theory that is probably the most discussed response to the mind-body problem (the relationship between consciousness and brain). Physicalism, or materialism, as it is also known, is a theory that holds that everything that exists is a physical thing and no other kind of substance exists. Basically, everything we know to exist can be reduced to physical properties. The modest version of epiphenomenalism that Jackson uses to reject the materialist theory holds that certain mental states are non-physical, but these non-physical states existence is caused by physical

Television and the Hearts/Minds of Children

Children from three to five are often adorable, full of life, talkative, and curious. This is the time of their lives when they absorb and mimic almost everything they see. Preschoolers are very demanding, and they need plenty of attention, especially from their parents. With parents needing to balance work, chores, and other important matters they are involved with, some parents have learned that putting a child in front of a television helps buy time to accomplish what they need to do. Although some shows claim that they provide education and wholesome entertainment for preschoolers, parents may still wonder if all that time spent in front of a television is helping or hurting their children's development. Any show that children will watch can have a behavioral, mental, emotional effects on them (Peduk, 2012, p. 224). Television shows geared for preschoolers can have both positive and negative impacts on children's development because they provide educational content but also promot

Urban Land Use in Akure, Nigeria

This paper examines urban land use planning and management practices in Akure, Nigeria with the aim of identifying how to improve it and achieve sustainable city development in the country. It highlights land use planning and management policies and regulations in the city. It further discusses the implications of uncoordinated land use management in context of developing world cities and suggests how to improve the present inefficient practices. The paper draws on a systematic survey of land use mechanisms and activities, departments and agencies of government responsible for land use planning and management as well as individuals involved in land use activities including land owners in the study area. The paper reveals that land use management in the city has been wholly concerned with the granting of statutory right of occupancy and approval of plans to use land for different purposes, without adequate monitoring of its outcomes. It also shows that land management and control tool
