The United States Air Force

I have the honor to work for the world's greatest air force. The United States Air Force (USAF) consists of intelligent, dedicated, and incredibly hard working airmen. These airmen achieve an immense amount of accomplishments every day. The endless sacrifice, extensive knowledge, and unmatched performance of the airmen are the key factors that ensure air and space superiority. The USAF bases these core competencies and distinctive capabilities on a shared commitment to three values: integrity first, service before self, and excellence in all we do. Founded on 18 September 1947, the USAF had one mission: to fly, fight, and win in air, space, and more recently, cyberspace. To achieve that mission, the air force has a vision of global vigilance, reach, and power. The vision entails three core competencies: developing airmen, advancing

Nepal and the Happiness Index

Ranked 96th globally on the prosperity index, Nepal apparently is also given the 47th place in the 'personal freedom' sub-index in 2014.(Legatum Prosperity Index, 2013-2014) The situation today is much more complex however, so all of these stats are expected to go down, implying the situation being less economically stable and the country being less prosperous. After the massive earthquakes the country went through it is not out of ordinary for a small nation to suffer long term effects. So this year has been disastrous to Nepal in multiple layers which will also contribute to this prosperity index to fall down as the sub-indices such as safety and security, and health will naturally go down. Although one may put forth the point that Entrepreneurship and opportunity will go up, but the reality will be far from it as the inc

College Application Essay - Criminology and Investigations

The major that I plan on studying at the is Criminology and Investigations. Criminology and investigations is a major that requires you to study a variety of resources in order to prevent, investigate, and educate about different types of crimes. It is the scientific study of the law. To get into the program at West Virginia you must have a 2.0 GPA over all and achieve sophomore status. The program is very competitive due to the large number of applicants each year. Before you get into the major you must receive a C or better in Sociology 101, and Sociology 105. Once in the major to graduate you need 128 credited hours, and internships during the student's junior year are encouraged. I have been interested with criminal justice for many years and got very excited when I realized that I have the opportunity to be a part of this program. There

Conventional Wisdom and Judgment

Conventional wisdom has it that we judge others because it is human nature. Though I concede that, I still insist that many people judge others a lot more intense, or harshly than we should. Judging is something that we do every day as humans. We really cannot help it. We do not just judge each other based upon clothes, shoes, or personal appearance, we do it even when it is something we cannot change. We judge each other based upon our appearance, actions, gender, race, and so on. We are constantly judging, and being judged on a daily basis. Individuals born with disabilities experience this so much more than they should. When you are born with something you cannot change, it is not right to judge and make evaluations based upon that person. Having a disability does not make you any less of a human being. When people have their medical issues or whatever problems they may have, it does not make it any easier when people are staring, making jokes, or standing far away, as if they wou

Experience Working with Dementia Patients

Working in the assisted living site, most of the residents I worked with were in different stages of dementia. Interacting with these residents, I observed some of the signs and symptoms of memory loss such as asking the same questions over and repeating the same story again and again. In most of our sessions, I've noticed some residents asking us the date or time of the day repetitively in a short span of time. Also, some residents would never recognize us and were always curious about where we were from. We had to keep re-introducing ourselves and let them know we were there for arts and crafts at the beginning of each activity. I also noticed a lot of verbal problems we talked about in class. There were some residents that had mild word-finding difficulty with occasional semantic paraphasia even though their speech remained fluent and grammatically correct. In contrast there were some resid

Jacob Riis and Social Reform

The chapter "The Down Town Back-Alleys" in Jacob Riis' novel "How the Other Half Lives" focuses on the plight of the poor on the lower east side of Manhattan. The novel focuses on what Riis calls the "other half," indicating the division between the poor people he writes about and his audience. The chapter emphasizes the unfortunate living conditions in tenement housing. He details the gruesome day-to-day lives of the poor, and he stresses how dissimilar their lives are compared to his audience. Riis describes social divisions amongst people, and at times uses offensive writing against certain groups in order to further his thesis. His writing could be construed in two very different ways. Was Riis being racist and prejudicial or were his racial comments necessary to create a connection and gain trust from his audience? It is interesting how as an immigrant, Riis made disparaging comments towards others like himself. Riis' use of unethical writing and the

Japanese and French Birth Rates

Japan and France are both famous for top countries for longevity, and have serious problem about a dwindling number of children, so they have something in common. However, there are some differences between them especially when it comes to what governments deal with declining birth rates and the way of thinking for having children. This report will compare and contrast the some systems when it comes to this point. During the period of 1994 to 2014, Japanese birth rate decreased from 1.50 to 1.41, while French one suddenly increased from 1.65 to 2.01. Why do French women have more babies in a decade? And why Japanese women are unwilling to have more babies? The difference is might related by systems of childcare leave. France government gives people excellen

Globalization and the Industrial Revolution

The Industrial Revolution was a historical event that established new patterns of globalization. When referring to globalization, the Industrial Revolution, "involves both the macro-structures of a global community and the micro-structures of global personhood facilitating the creation of multiple individual and collective identities nurtured by the intensifying relations between the person and the globe," according to Manfred Steger, author of Globalization: A Very Short Introduction (Steger 15). This historical event, which took place from the eighteenth to the nineteenth century, shifted agricultural, rural societies to industrial, urban societies in Europe and North America. Before the Industrial Revolution, which began in Britain in the late eighteenth century, economies were based on agricultural production and handicrafts, using hand tools and basic machines. By the mid nineteenth century, industrialization spread across Europe to the United States, and marked the tr

Literary Analysis of Rumpelstiltskin

The creepy, Grimm Brother's tale, "Rumpelstiltskin," was said to have taken place a long time ago at the site of an old, sewing mill. A poor miller found himself in contact with the King of the village and claimed that his daughter could spin straw into gold. The King was under the impression that this was truthful when really it was a lie. When the daughter finds herself upset because of her inability to oblige the Kings wishes, she receives help in exchange for her valuables. First, her necklace is sacrificed to the strange, little man who knows how to spin straw into gold. The second time the King demands gold, she sacrifices her ring to the little man. When the King demands gold for a third time, she has nothing left to give. The girl finally agrees to award the little man her first-born child as her repayment, considering her only other option was being killed by the King. Eventually, her son is born and the little man continues to demand the child after denying the daughters ric

Morrison's and Dostoevsky's Word Choice

Language is fluid. Language has the capacity to flow from person to person, generation to generation and even time to time. However, language does not just store waves of information. Language, when done right, can invoke not only emotional, but physical responses from an audience. Toni Morrison, in her 1993 Nobel Lecture, speaks to this power. She addresses how language is not only thrust into the arms of a younger generation, but how it has been used overtime for construction as well as corruption. It is with these examples of her piece that it becomes ever clear as to how language, and its facets in written and spoken word, must be presented. Language has to be executed in a way that attracts the audience. The most persuasive pieces, whether for war, politics or patriotism, are found in the author's ability to connect with their audience. The author has to make the audience feel the words before them, not just hear or read them. This is the aspect that separates heart pounding, insp

Bernstein's Theory of Linguistics

The main key ideas presented by Bernstein in his theory of linguistic and communication codes contribute to the concept of a divide between classes in modern educational settings and within the sociology of education. He queries the impact that social class can have on children's attainment through dialectal differences in restricted and elaborated codes and the, "underlying relationship between the social division of labour, language socialization in families, and the education system. (Schwartz, 2002, p.554). This assignment will focus on his main points of argument to support this theory. I will also touch on the notions of other academics who support this and how these works are used to understand the way education is exercised today. Bernstein's codes theory stated that, "between the school and community of the working-class child, there may exist a cultural discontinuity based upon two radically different systems of communication," (Bernstein, 1974, p.144) It was said there are

Benefits of Living in Houston

As graduation comes around, many students struggle with where they are going to live next. Some opt with going back to their hometowns, while others decide to branch out and explore new territory. When choosing a new area to live in, you must think about what city has the most to offer. Houston, Texas is a great city for most graduating students to live in due to the job opportunities, graduate programs, pro sports, fine cuisine, and diverse culture. One reason Houston is a great place to live, especially for soon to be graduated students, is the strong job market. It was shown that in the first half of 2013, there were more jobs created in Houston than in any other city in the United States. "It also helps that Houston is the main energy capital in Texas. With dozens of energy companies are headquarters here; the city leads both in oil and gas industry." Houston has really benefitted from the oil and gas boom that has recently occurred. (Tex). Along with oil and gas, Hous

Michael Joseph Jackson

Michael Joseph Jackson, also known as "The King of Pop," was born August 29th, 1958. He was a musician, entertainer, and dancer. He was one of the most influential entertainers of all time. Michael was an icon of pop culture for his own style of fashion as well as dance moves. He became a part of the music industry at the young age of seven; Michael made his debut alongside his brothers in the band The Jackson 5. This was the start of his career, which eventually led to a solo career starting in 1971. Beginning his career at such a young age, Michael never had a chance to live a normal childhood. He was always rehearsing with his family and/or going on tour with his band. He decided that in 1988, he was going to recreate his childhood dreams in California. Neverland was the name given to the amusement park, attracting many kids over the years. Although he seemed to be living the dream, throughout the years Michael hid a dark secret that he soon revealed for the first time

Period of the Napoleonic War

During the time period of 1803 to 1815, the Napoleonic War took place. This long-lasting war was a battle between Great Britain and France. These two nations fought for the power over Europe. During the war, the U.S was involved. They called themselves as "neutral". America overall may not have benefited but the industries within the U.S. did. These industries made war supplies such as artillery and weapons which were then sold to the two fighting nations. Initially, America benefited from the Napoleonic War because before the year 1807, when the blockades, Orders in Council and ships at sea attacks emerged, for a good four years the industries were able to have their goods sold to the French and British. It was great timing for these industries because both countries were in demand for more weapons and goods. This was good because if they kept fighting in thi

Descartes and Hume - Rationalism and Empiricism

For my final research paper I have chosen the following question: How would you define knowledge? Do you agree with Descartes that the mind is the primary source of knowledge (rationalism) or with Hume that sense perception is the primary source of knowledge (empiricism). I have chosen to defend Descartes based on three main reasons. One reason is that Descartes believes in the mind and how it can think and obtain knowledge by us thinking. This contradicts Hume's belief that our senses determine our knowledge intake. Secondly, is that Descartes believes in God, who he thinks has created the world. This is better because according to Hume, God doesn't exist. Finally, Descartes will not believe anything which he cannot prove exists, unless he sees otherwise in the world. Whereas for Hume, what you see is what you get. The first example that Descartes better defines knowledge is that he references the mind and body as separate. This separation, referenced as Dualism in the BBC documenta

Sex Addiction in It Follows

Sexual addiction is when a person compulsively engages in persistent or escalating sexual acts despite the harm it may cause to themselves or those around them. Such acts may include but are not limited to sex with prostitutes, anonymous sex with multiple partners, multiple affairs outside a committed relationship, habitual exhibitionism, and so on (Shelley-Griffin, Eric 1997. Sex & Love Addiction, Treatment & Recovery. Praeger). It Follows was released worldwide on March 27, 2015 and deals with a young woman's dilemma to stay alive by continuously and compulsively having sex as a means to ward off a curse intent on killing her. She literally forms a need for sex and uses the characters around her to satisfy it. Directed by David Robert Mitchell, the film opens to a young woman fleeing her home in hopes of escaping something inside. She frantically gets in her car and drives away to the beach. Once there, she calls her father to apologize for how she's been acting recently and that s

Other Side of the Bridge - Violence and Avoidance

In today's society, on a daily basis, everyone struggles with coping with adversity, no matter how big or small it is. While everyone deals with adversity, the way we deal with it makes us different as some deal with adversity by using positive approaches, while others use negative approaches. In the novel "The Other Side of the Bridge" by Mary Lawson, the protagonist Arthur Dunn strives to overcome the adversity he faces due to his family relationships. However by using the negative approaches of violence and avoiding his adversity, Arthur is unable to overcome his adversities effectively. Arthur first uses negative approaches to cope with adversity when he uses violence. Arthur's initial act of violence is significant, as it has a harmful impact on himself as his violence only leads to guilt. The struggle Arthur faces is his relationship with his brother Jake, and their rivalry, in which Jake constantly tries to push Arthur over the edge. However Arthur never reacts,

Big Brother in a Military Family

In my short 17 years of life, I have experienced more than the average person does in their entire lifetime. Due to my father being in the Air Force, I have been all over the United States of America and all over the world and have seen things most people only read about. There are also hardships that go along with being a military dependent that has shaped me into the person I am today in many ways. However, the single event that had the biggest impact and shaped my identity was the birth of my younger brother. I was born in Arizona on 27 February 1997 but this is not where I call home. Military families, like mine, usually move about every two or three years which turns the place I was born into one of the many locations we have lived. This continual movement, although a hardship, has led me to realize home is where my family is and it is the people that make it a home. There are good and bad things about each place we have lived but it is the memories we make with f

Literature and Gender in the New Colonies

During the infant stages of America's development throughout the seventeenth and early eighteenth century, settlers came over not knowing what their futures held or all the hardship they must first endure before finally building colonies that would grow and flourish. With the harsh environment and unknown world before them, men were seen as the saviors and the creatures of the new world. In contrast, women were simply pushed aside and not given their rightful place in history. Women were told to stay within their roles as a housewife and caregiver; none could rise up against the oppressive ways they had come to know. While history has shown that there were those who rose up and fought against oppression with blood, few women did so in the colonial period. There were those in the new world who fought the oppressive ways of society by proving that the pen is much mightier than the sword. Writers such as Anne Bradstreet revolutionized the stage for women writers in the early years of the

Developmental Stages of Life

How do people grow physically, intellectually, socially, and morally? People go through stages of life from birth to death that shape their body, their personalities, thoughts, interactions with people, and also develop a personal code of ethics. Through every stage, there is an outcome, as described from many famous developmental psychologists. The outcome can either be negative or positive, in most cases. People grow physically starting from birth. During Infancy, most of the brain cells a person will ever have are present at birth. However. the neural connections that enable walking, talking, and memory are only beginning to form through the span of childhood. This neural immaturity may explain why we have no memories of events before 3 years of age, also because our hippocampus isn't fully developed. While lasting memories may not be formed before then, infants are capable of learning simple responses. After puberty, a process of pruning shuts down neural connections and streng

Britain, Greece and the Elgin Marbles

This article is an informative piece about sculptures taken from the Pantheon by Lord Elgin between 1801 and 1812 at which time Greece was a part of the Ottoman Empire. The main purpose of this article is to show both arguments for why the marbles should be returned to Greece or why they should stay in Britain. After removing the marbles Elgin then sold the sculptures to the British museum in 1816 where they sit protected from the elements, vandals, or any other destructive forces. Melina Mercouri is a major advocate for the return of the sculptures to Greece on the basis of morality. She claims that the marbles are an essential piece of the Greek culture and should be returned to their rightful home. The Greeks claim that Elgin wrongfully removed the marbles and they never legally belonged to the British museum. However, Elgin had the necessary paperwork from the proper officials to rightfully remove the statues. The form that Elgin had produced was nonspecific and partially left open

Women and Depression - Biological Factors

Abstract Clinical depression affects women twice as often as men. As with many mental disorders, a variety of factors may be involved with the onset of depression in women. Specific attention has been paid to the biological factors, such as the changes in the brain, hormones, and genetics. Neurotransmitters play a big role in depression. They are and is associated with depressive symptoms when the chemicals are not correctly balanced. Changes in the body's balance of hormones may be involved in causing or triggering depression and can be a result of menopause or a thyroid problem. Women who have biological relative who also suffer from depression are likely to also develop the condition. This paper will review incorporate the findings regarding these various potential causes of depression in women. Title In the U.S., about 15 million people experience clinical depression each year and the majority of them are women (author, date). Unfortunately, nearly two-thirds do not get the hel

The Ineffectiveness of Abstinence Programs

The issue of sex education in schools has been a debate among parents, school administrators, health officials, and religious organizations for years. We all know that the safest sex is no sex at all, yet we continue to engage in that activity. If we are not, then we are thinking about it, planning on doing so in the future, or being bombarded by it in the media. Abstinence-only sex education persuades teens to wait until marriage before having sex, but totally ignores all other aspects of comprehensive sexual education, like safe sex and the use of contraceptives and birth control ("Truth About Abstinence-Only Programs," n.d.). Abstinence-only programs are not effective at delaying sexual activity, preventing unwanted pregnancy, or reducing Sexual Transmitted Diseases (STD's). According to the Sexuality Information and Education Council of the United States (SEICUS), since 1981 the federal government has funded abstinence-only-until-marriage programs, even though scientific research

Biography of Louis Riel

"We must cherish our inheritance. We must preserve our nationality for the youth of our future. The story should be written down to pass on," stated Louis Riel. This quote was said by the heroic Metis leader. He was the leader of the provisional government and the man who wrote the List of Rights for the Metis, and he gave up his life to the Metis because he stood up for what he believed in. Louis Riel, at a young age, was sent to school to become a priest, but ended up going into law, and became a lawyer. He studied in Montreal, and worked in various parts of the East. He then returned to Saint-Boniface. At that time, thousands of Metis and Roman Catholics lived there, (The Great Names of the French Canadian Community). The Canadian government was very disrespectful to these people. The government wanted to take the Metis' land and let English settlers live there. They had no rights at the time. The Metis were getting mad at the government and wanted to stand up to them. Th
