America and the Death Penalty

America's view on their justice system is very unclear, "we must reject the idea that every time a law's broken, society is guilty rather than the lawbreaker. It is time to restore the American precept that each individual is accountable for his actions." (Ronald Reagan). Some insist that the death penalty acts to prevent a capital crime, while others feel that it has no effect whether a capital crime is still committed. Is it right or is it wrong to take the life of someone who has committed a capital crime? The answer to that question are these questions: does it depend on the case, does the sanity of the person determine whether the death penalty is just, or will the jury's biased ways determine whether the murderer's fate will be enforcing justice or just another corrupt way of the world? The death penalty is a topic that lies between the lines of opinions and feelings based on each person's culture. The central view on the death penalty ratifies that the world may advanc

The Best Day of My Life

There have been a lot of best days of my life, like turning sixteen and eighteen respectfully, my senior prom, and graduating high school, but the best day of my life that stands out till this day was coming to the United States of America. The morning we were leaving Nigeria to the United States, my family and I started reminiscing about the things that happened and what we are going to miss when we leave the country, like my sister, my extended family, my best friends and my boyfriend. We said our sad goodbyes and left for the airport by 4:30pm. There was a lot of traffic on our way to the airport but we got there around 6:30pm. We registered our luggage and signed in which took an hour and we also got our flight tickets that will take us to Turkey and was scheduled to take off 11:45pm. My dad took my mom and my siblings and me to the airport restaurant to eat dinner. We came back to board the plane which we were all excited to board since we have never left the country only local f

Organizational Leadership

"Leadership is action not position," Donald McGannon. According to the Merriam Webster dictionary, "Leadership," is defined as the act, capacity, and position to lead a group of people in an organization. Being a leader requires psychological competence in understanding people and their behaviors. A leader is one who empowers others to become the best version of themselves that they can possibly be. An effective leader takes into consideration the organization or group as a whole and analyzes ways to adapt and to lead successfully. One most know that leadership is not a destination it is a journey in which we innovatively create a positive impact. The impact a leader has on employees is directly connected with job performance and engagement. The leadership style in an organization can be the root cause of many organizational behavior issues. We often see leaders who have a, "one size fits all," approach fail due to their inability to value differences of

Common Core and American Education

For a long while now, America has underperformed in education on the world's stage, slowly losing much of its academic rigor over time. This problem spawned the now infamous No Child Left Behind Act, which created more problems for teachers then it was solving. Students were suffering the constant teaching to the test that this act inspired, and turned education into a formulaic memorization game. It is in light of this failure that new standards had to be made. Fast forward to 2010, when the Common Core standards were adopted by many states as part of Race To The Top, a new program dedicated to raising standards in education to be more college ready, (The Week). This new initiative granted states funding for schools and more importantly, waivers for the No Child Left Behind Act. As part of the conditions states had to implement the Common Core standards or standards closely aligned with them. With bipartisan support, these stipulations were agreed upon in turn accomplishing serious ed

The Flesh Desires Everything

Can a man or woman be truly satisfied with what they have? A perfect example is Leo Tolstoy's, "How Much Land Does a Man Need?" The tragic hero Pakhom possesses a tragic flaw like all heroes do; he always craves something even whenever he is well off. Pakhom starts off as a beggar taking from the rich's land. All throughout the story, Pakhom slowly is falling into the Devil's plan for him. Pakhom made a deal with the Devil where Pakhom will receive land from Satan; however, he will receive Pakhom: "We will have a tussle. I'll give you land enough; and by means of that land I will get you into my power," (Tippens 204). Tolstoy ingeniously uses Pakhom his tragic hero to enforce the point of greed. When Pakhom heard of the other peasants buying more land than himself, he exclaimed, "Look at that, the land is all being sold, and I shall get none of it Other people are buying and we must also buy twenty acres or so. Life is becoming impossible. That steward is simply crushing us with his fines," Pakhom's fleshly desires starts here and only leads him down a horrible path. (Tippens 205). After Pakhom purchased hi

Gun Control and the Right to Bear Arms

Abstract:       The second amendment and gun control have been a controversial issue, switching back and forth from guns are needed for protection and the only cause injury and lead to increased crime. The second amendment gives citizens of the United States of America a right to bear arms. And that right should not be infringed. Some people feel that the right needs to be amendment since it puts society at risk. In the research paper we will discuss; the history of the second amendment, why pro-gun supporters say it is an important right, and why anti-gun supporters think guns are just a risk to society. Gun Control and the Right to Bear Arms The fight against guns and whether or not normal citizens have the right to have them have been waging on for years. Guns are used for protection against disorder and chaos, when the unexpected occurs. We were given rights in this country. Rights that we cannot have taken away from us, the right to protect our freedom. Most importantly

Title Devine-Is Mine! by Emily Dickinson

The poem Title Divine-is mine! by Emily Dickinson conveys the frustrations of an unmarried woman. It is concerned with the fact that women seem to have only three significant parts to their lives; birth, marriage, and death. But what if one doesn't get married? Does this mean the woman has no title? Is this woman insignificant? The poem toys with the fact that god may not find a woman significant unless she is married; The narrator in the poem wants to have the title of a wife, even though she does not have "the sign" of marriage, or a ring. In this poem, the literary devices of tone, allusion, and trope, all build on each other to express the frustration and anger that a woman's relationship with god is dependent on her marital status. A poem's tone is the attitude that is implied to the reader. This poem's usage of 'em dashes' and exclamation points successfully guide the reader to read the poem with an aggressive tone. The poem begins, "Title divine-is mine! T

The Iberian Enlightenment

When the topic of the European Enlightenment comes up many people refer to England or France while the Iberian Peninsula is often left out or not seen as an area that had seen that much of the enlightenment. Granted, the Enlightenment did come quicker and may have had a more influential impact in other areas of Europe, but that does not mean that Spain and Portugal should be dismissed from the conversation. The Enlightenment in Spain came with the new Bourbon dynasty, and in Charles II. In Portugal, the highlight of the Enlightenment came with the rise of Marquis of Pombal. However, the Enlightenment that reached the Iberian Peninsula was relatively restricted in comparison to other European countries, and had been, in my cases, controlled directly from the government. Before the Bourbon dynasty took the thrown in Spain, the Hadsburg dynasty was on the decline with the of the last Hadsburg kings, Charles II. Charles II was disabled from birth and was a symbol of the dying Hadsburgs

The Corruption of Social Media

Has social media gone down into a spiral called corruption? The definition of corrupt or corruption is: "debased in character; depraved; perverted; wicked; evil." Most people would agree that social media has brought the ugly side of people. Such has badmouthing fellow classmates, co-workers, family member, basically anyone in your life. A simple post can hurt a victim possibly physically but most definitely emotionally. These kind of actions sometimes come to legal allegations such as false rumors about a victim. The victim can feel threatened and would want to do more than simply comment back as self defense. Maybe bring them to court for a restraining order, or in most occasions students having other students expelled/ suspended. I can personally say, I was a victim of cyber bullying, and didn't take action till the end of year. Having that being said, my, "bully," was suspended for a week and it was a relief off my chest. Now cyber bullying is something very ser

China's One Child Policy

With a rising birth rate, because of the suggestion of a former Chinese official and a shortage of food, China decided to enforce a law in 1980 to only allow one child per family. This act of desperation may have been what the country needed 35 years ago but is now the cause of many of their problems. It is a violation of basic human rights that were proclaimed in 1968 at the International Conference on Human Rights that stated: "Parents have a basic human right to determine freely and responsibly the number and the spacing of their children." (Proclamation, 2015) The one-child policy has been the cause of economic and social problems as well too many infringements of human rights upon women and should be abolished. Firstly, China has to face many economic issues with the low percentage of people joining the workforce compared to the high percentage of those whom are leaving. Although the lack of employees to fill the gross number of those whom are retiring will increase the

Temperature and the Rate of Respiration in Saccharomyces

Abstract The purpose of this experiment was to test the effect of four different temperatures on the rate of fermentation in Saccharomyces by measuring the rate of carbon dioxide production. Saccharomyces, also known as yeast, is a unicellular, eukaryotic sac fungus and is useful for this experiment because of its characteristic of alcohol fermentation. The group was able to document the carbon dioxide production by measuring the volume, then marked at each of the temperature intervals which were tested at temperatures 4°C, 23°C, 37°C, and 60° Celsius. The experiment was conducted by pouring Saccharomyces in fermentation tubes, heating each of them at different temperatures, marking the rise of the gas bubbles in the fermentation tubes which indicated carbon dioxide production and measured the volume of the CO2 bubbles that formed in the tube. Introduction Cellular respiration is the process by which microorganisms obtain the energy available in carbohydrates. They take the carbo

The Dangers of Pitbull Ownership

Imagine walking down a sidewalk when suddenly there is a giant, snarling, bear-like pit bull in front of you. What would you be thinking about right at that moment? Lately, there has been a large controversy surrounding the ownership of pit bulls. A majority of people do not support the idea that pit bull ownership should be illegal. They believe they can be very friendly and fabulous pets. However, pit bulls have had a long history of killings and the injuring of elderly and children. Therefore, pit bull ownership should be illegal because they can cause great harm and can even kill people. To begin, pit bull ownership should be illegal because they can cause great harm. In fact, in the article, " The Problem with Pit Bulls" by Charlotte Alter, from Time Magazine, the author discusses this point. For instance, "Pit bulls make only six percent of the dog population but are responsible for sixty-eight percent of dog attacks and fifty-two percent of dogs related fatalities since 1982..." (Alter 1). This excerpt explains that although pit bulls only make up a small portion of the dog populatio

Deferred Dreams in A Raisin in the Sun

The title of the play "A Raisin in the Sun" comes from a line in a Langston Hughes poem: "What happens to a dream deferred? Does it dry up like a raisin in the sun" (Tackach 5/6)? Lorraine Hansberry's play confronts crucial issues that have faced African Americans: the fragmentation of the family, the black male's quest for manhood, and reflects the circumstances of African Americans in the 1950's, at the beginning of the Civil Rights Movement (Tackach 4/6). Mama (Lena) of the Younger family is to receive a ten thousand dollar insurance check after the death of Big Walter, Mama's husband and father to Walter and Beneatha, which could possibly fulfil each one of their dreams. Hansberry demonstrates how the Younger family endures their deferred dreams mainly through the characters of Walter, Mama (Lena), and Beneatha. When a family faces deferred dreams, it can cause rising tempers amongst the family, defiant attitudes, and great sadness. Early on in the play, Walter begins to show his heightened temper when he lashes out at his wife because she doesn't necessarily support his dream of investing t

Reaction Paper - The Japanese Tsunami

Japan is known to be one of the most developed and established countries not only in Asia, but also across the planet. Their technology is so advanced and innovative making them one of the leading producers and manufacturers of gadgets, cars, and other electronics or things that involve technology. Japan's forte lies in technology that makes it a world leader in so many technological fields. Apart from that, their education system is one of the best education systems around the world. Nonetheless, even well-prepared and developed countries are not insusceptible to these terrifying disasters. Japan sits on a subduction zone, which is where one plate is being forced beneath another. It is also at the meeting point of two pieces of the giant Pacific plate, which are moving in different directions alongside each other which makes it prone to to earthquakes and tsunamis. Hence, Japan is not exempted from the disasters brought about by these natural forces. March 11, 2011 was a devastating

Russia's Tightening Grip on Media Censorship

The Russian government is strong to say the least. With a democratic style of leadership it would seem that a right of freedom of speech would be respected in Russia. The government, the Kremlin, is assigned to protect its people's rights. However, then the government passes a law that tightens self-censorship to a point where they decide for the people what they can and can't read. In layman's terms the law essentially "bars individuals and media outlets from reproducing materials published by [these] "undesirable organisations" (Gabrielle Tétrault-Farber). The definition of 'undesirable' being wholly decided by what the Prosecutor Generals Office decides is 'undesirable' toward the government. The Russian media is already vague because of the level of government control. 'Russian TV is dominated by channels that are either run directly by the state or owned by companies with close links to the Kremlin' (BBC 2015) and while this law is supposed

Martin Luther and the Church in Rome

Martin Luther, one of the greatest influences on Christianity as we know it was a German monk, a catholic priest, a professor of theology, and an influential figure in the Protestant Reformation. The intent of this essay is to point out the reasons why Martin Luther was disillusioned with the Church of Rome, how his catholic upbringing contributed, his entrance into monastery work, and the monastic life he lived before he made a breakthrough in his own life. It will also talk about his ninety five theses on the sale of indulgences, his exile and the work the Reformation did to improve the situation, the way the Diet of Worms treated him, and the way the priests of Rome disregarded his work. Martin Luther was born on 10th November, 1843 in Eisleben, Germany. As a young man, Martin Luther had two main influences in his life. The first was his father's ambitiousness for him, and the second was his education. Hans, Luther's father, made him study courses that pointed toward Luther becom

Learning Styles and Theories

This essay will look at the impact and usefulness of learning styles and theories in teaching and learning. It will highlight some of the key features of such concepts, assess their strengths and weaknesses, look at how they are actually used and explore the relationship between them. Generally, learning is viewed as the process of gaining knowledge or of learning how to do something e.g. riding a bike. Psychologists have defined learning as 'a change in behaviour as a result of experience or practice' (Pritchard, 2009, p.2). However, learning is such a vast and continuous process that takes place in many settings throughout different stages of a person's life it is therefore understood and defined in different ways. Behaviorism relates to learning that is concerned with the behaviour of the learner and the change in behaviour when learning takes place. Learning is shown by the behaviour of the learner in response to environmental stimuli (Woollard, 2010, p.1). Behaviour is s

Metaphysical Poetry

Metaphysical poetry has been identified as being highly intellectual as it deals with metaphorical themes that compare dissimilar and abstract ideas. This idea is clearly conveyed in both of Marvell's poems. "To his coy mistress" depicts a man's plea to his mistress to accept his sexual advances and "A dialogue between the Soul and Body" addresses the dichotomy between one's body and soul and the mutual entrapment they feel as subject to each other's whims and needs. The idea of metaphysical poetry is depicted through the various techniques such as paradoxes, symbolism, figurative language and poetic techniques which he uses to represent his focus on the broader concepts of human (being) existence. These ( discussed) poems both carry definite features of metaphysical poetry, this is evident as the composer uses as variety of sound devices such as colloquial language, iambic tetrameters and rhyming couplets are used to portray that the persona's in both 'to h

The Story of An Hour and The Use of Force

"The Story Of an Hour" and "The Use of Force" are two tales of women battling ailments while interacting with those closest to them. "The Story of an Hour" follows a heart diseased Mrs. housewife, in the wake of her husbands presumed death. "The Use of Force" is a story of a young girl concealing her undiagnosed Diphtheria disease. The two stories similarities are shown through the tension between male and female characters in each story, the rebellion toward the ideal roles in the females respective lives, the presence of characters that are living with physical ailments, the setting of both stories and the family oriented vibe both of the authors portray through their short stories. The tension that exists between male and female characters is a distinctive similarity of the two stories. The male figures in both "The Story of an Hour" and "The Use of Force" are portrayed as agitators. The young girl's doctor seems to be more

The Right Price of Consumerism

Consumerism by definition is a modern movement for the protection of the consumer against useless, inferior, or dangerous products, misleading advertising, and unfair pricing. The believe that an ever-expanding consumption of goods is advantageous to the economy. How do we decide on what to consume when there are brands constantly competing for our attention. Studies have shown that when people are supplied with lots of options, they tend to buy less. Are our views rational and uninfluenced by society and advertisement? There are several courses dedicated to understanding patterns to our endless consumption. Careers based entirely on influencing an average American into swiping their credit cards. We pride ourselves on rational behavior and freedom of chasing the dream of american capitalism, yet we indulge in the idea that the more useless things we buy the happier we will be. Being Informed of Hacktivism

In an era where everything is constantly becoming more intertwined with technology, the rituals of our daily lives follow this very trend. Whether it is something as simple as online banking or as complex as using technology as a mechanism to resist and express one's beliefs, the modern era of technology is continuing to expand society's possibilities. One expanded possibility has become the application of Hacktivism, the use of computer hacking as a means of protest to promote political ends. Opposite to historical agitational movements mediums of communication, but similar in their overarching goal to produce change, Hacktivism seeks to inform the public by disseminating secrets from governmental, corporate, and other private sources. One such hypothetical Hacktivist group, "Total News Today," consisting of highly trained, dedicated computer hackers have demonstrated their controversial tactics in a multitude of electronic publishing, from CIA waterboarding evidence to corp

Validity and Reliability of Assessments

Learning is an interactive process by which learners make sense of new information and use it in a daily life basis. According to Rethinking Classroom Assessment with Purpose in Mind, (2006) the term assessment is denoted as a continuous process of gathering and construing its extensive meaning. As cited in Minister of Education and Science as Guidance for Assessment in the Primary schools. (2008), Black and William synthesized over 250 studies linking assessment and learning, and found that the intentional use of assessment in the classroom to promote learning improved student achievement. The interpretation of the assessment results does not include judgments on students' behavior, skills and abilities that are not subject to the particular assessment. Assessment is consistent from one student to another, and if possible, from one teacher to another. Assessment is fundamentally a measurement process; subject to the principles of measurement. According to Rethinking Classroom Asses

Unpacking the Invisible Knapsack

In Peggy McIntosh's "Unpacking the Invisible Knapsack," the author introduces their observation and claims of what are men's attitude towards their privileges. In a manner corresponding to Peggy McIntosh, Associate Director of the Wellesley College Center for Research on Women, "white privilege is an invisible package of unearned assets which I can count on cashing in each day, but about which I was meant to remain oblivious." This knowledge came to her as she was writing a research paper concerning "Male Privilege in America." She came to found that as she was under the predominance of males, she also had predominance over other women who were not the same ethnic origin or color as her, singularly black women. McIntosh had disinclination in the factor that some did not know of their privilege since whites are carefully taught not to recognize white privilege, as males are taught not to recognize male privilege (McIntosh, 327). McIntosh then uses this a
