However, my British friends don't like it when I use the word stuff. According to them, I should always say ... know most of what a cell does. Since all living things are made of cells, you'll know a lot about what all living things do. STRUCTURES and FUNCTIONS nucleus - contains genetic mater...
... that light travels through the specimen. For this to take place, the material must be cut very thinly. The material is then stained so that the different parts of the material are visible. A dye such as methylene blue is used because this dyes the material without killing it. Other dyes require the material to be killed first. An electron microscope is different to a light microscope ... see the image. Resolution and magnitude are two different things that are explained here. Magnification is the number of times bigger the image we are projected is than the actual material. We can chang...
... against, and ethical issues and thoughts. A clone is the name for a group of organisms or other living matter with exactly the same genetic material. Genetic material is made up of genes, which are the parts of cells that determine the characteristics in living things. There are many examples of cloning in nature ... and are considered clones. Scientists use a different technique to clone higher life forms. The way it is usually done is by taking out genetic material and putting into the host mother's ovum. Then they let it develop normally and let the mother give birth normally unless t...
... ) dogs and cats, or from an abattoir in the case of livestock. The egg is typically matured for about 24 hours so that the genetic material (DNA) is congregated in the nucleus. Using the syringe system to create a gentle suction, the egg is held in place by the holding pipette ... . The enucleation pipette is then used to pierce the eggshell and penetrate the egg membrane. Suction is applied and the nucleus containing the genetic material is removed and discarded. 5. ... they never resulted in an offspring born without a tail for that same reason. Therefore, Lamarck's idea cannot be correct, mainly because these changes do not affect the genetic material. Change happens in genetic material only when games are involved. In 1858, Charles Darwin introduced a theory of evolution that is accepted by almost all scientists today. His theory states that all species evolved ... time required for half the radioactive atoms in a sample to decay. Each radioactive elements has a different half-life. Carbon-14 is particularly useful because it can be used to date mat...
... 1924, microscopic studies using stains for DNA and protein showed that they were both present in chromosomes. Some indirect evidence showed DNA to be related in some way to genetic material. Almost all somatic cells of any given species have the same amount of DNA, while the RNA content and the amount and kinds of proteins differed greatly between different cell ... types in the same species. DNA was not, however, at this time considered to be identical to genetic material, mostly because some chemical test had shown that DNA probably did not have the chemical diversity needed for a gen...
Monomers: The Basis of Life Simple organic molecules present in living material include monosaccharides, amino acids, fatty acids, glycerol and aromatic bases, such molecules are termed monomers. These monomers act as building ... three components, a pentose sugar, a nitrogenous base and a phosphoric acid. Nucleotides are the monomers that form nucleic acids, the informational macromolecules that constitute the genetic material of all living organisms. Nucleotides form part of DNA, which consist of two helical anti-parallel polynucleotide chains held together by the pairing of complementary b...
... produce DNA. For example, within the core of HIV is a double molecule of ribonucleic acid, RNA. When the virus invades a cell, this genetic material is replicated in the form of DNA . But, in order to do so, HIV must first be able to produce a particular enzyme that can construct ... reverse transcriptase because it reverses the normal cellular process of transcription. The DNA molecules produced by reverse transcription are then inserted into the genetic material of the host cell, where they are co-replicated with the host's chromosomes; they are thereby distributed to all daughter cell...
... the crystal, and the patterns they make give a skilled scientist, armed with a computer, information about the positions of atoms in the molecule. Once DNA had been identified, as the genetic material scientists were keen to use the same technique to study at DNA. This was not easy because DNA was difficult to crystallise. Two of the scientists who succeeded in overcoming ... the DNA molecule. One scientist, Erwin Chargraff, set out to prove that DNA was a more complex molecule than had first been thought, a molecule that was worthy to be the genetic material. He used paper chromatograp...
VIRUS Virus- a microscopic particle that invades the cells of plants, animals, fungi, and Bacteria. Are viruses really alive? They do have some characteristics of a living thing. Viruses have genetic material, and they are able to evolve. But viruses are not made of cells, they cannot make protein, and they can't use energy. They can't reproduce on there own, only when they occupy a cell. Scientist have concluded that viruses are not alive. A typical virus is composed of a core of genetic material surrounded by a coat of protein. The protein protects the genetic material while entering the cel...
... it for over 100 years. Hans Dreisch created the first cloned animals in the late 1800's. Dreisch's original goal was not to create identical animals but to prove that genetic material is not lost during cell division. Dreisch's experiments involved sea urchins, which he picked because they have large embryo cells and grow independently of their mothers. Dreisch took a two-celled ... a knife to separate a 2-celled embryo of a salamander. He later separated a single cell from a 16-celled embryo. Spemman went on to propose what he called a "fantastical experiment," to remove the genetic ma...
... Deoxyribonucleic acid and ribonucleic acid are two chemical substances involved in transmitting genetic information from parent to offspring. It was known early into the 20th century that chromosomes, the genetic material of cells, contained DNA. In 1944, Oswald T. Avery, Colin M. MacLeod, and Maclyn McCarty concluded that DNA was the basic genetic component of chromosomes. Later, RNA would be proven to regulate ... protein synthesis. ... the environment. Polypeptide are enzymes which go on to act like the assembly machinery, breaking down and building and combining carbohydrates, lipids and proteins that make up variations of cell material. In the nucleus, DNA is transcribed onto an RNA molecule which is called a transcription unit. Each unit has a sequence just above it in the strand, this can be called " ... the two end into one. The result of what gets spliced together are called exons. The junk that gets cut out are intervening segments called introns. In the nucleus, the material in the introns will stay and ge...
... is why it is so widely used as evidence to identify individuals in the courtroom. However, there is a drawback, which experts often neglect to recognize. Evidence is any statement or material object from which reasonable conclusions can be drawn. It is a broad category embracing anything perceptible to the five senses including documents, exhibits, facts agreed to by both sides, and the ... that: "In almost all cases, the results of using a specimen sufficiently contaminated to alter test results simply would be ruled inconclusive. ... cells and contain genes. A human zygote receives 23 chromosomes from its mother and 23 chromosomes from its father. A homologous pair of chromosomes will be matched together based on similar genetic material. Sets of similar genes are called alleles and it is through these alleles that a zygote inherits genetic information. Each gamete has individual traits unlike the other which leads to a difference ... in genetic material. The dominant gene is superior to the recessive gene which therefore means any matched pair of chromosomes that differ in information will result in the dominant ch...
