My family environment of being in the military has influenced who I am as a person. Because my dad is in the military, we have moved all over the world and I have seen many different cultures. Even though I have hated the fact of us moving, seeing different cultures has helped me become the person that I am. I have always been exposed to those who are different than me and I have found that I respect people no matter where they are from. I have been in many different environments that have challenged me as a person. I have gone from physically living in foreign cultures and then back to living...

Critique: How I Learned to Sweep The poem "How I Learned to Sweep" is written beautifully. I like the rhyme scheme and the pentameter. I think its very unique how the author, Julia Alvarez, ties together the sweeping with the broom and the sweeping of the weeds from a helicopter dropping off troops. The lines " our soldiers were landing in their helicopters into jungles their propellers swept like weeds seen underwater- gives you a beautiful mental picture. You can actually see weeds underwater swaying and also weeds being swept down from a helicopter. Another visually strong element is this "...
There are many ways to break bad habits, different techniques work well with various bad habits. How difficult the bad habit is to break depends on what it is, for example, it is a lot easier to quit biting your fingernails then to quit smoking cigarettes. The technique I will explain works well with smaller bad habits such as biting your fingernails, or cracking your knuckles. First, you must realize that you have a problem with your bad habit. Biting your fingernails for example, some people do this when they"re nervous. The best way to stop is to think about not doing it. When you catch you...
The movie that I've decided to write a review about is called " How To Lose a Guy In 10 Days" two main actors of this romantic comedy are Kate Hudson and Matthew McConaughey, which look absolutely adorable as a couple, and deliver an outstanding acting performance. The story uncovers in New York City, Kate Hudson plays a character by name Andie, and Matthew plays Ben. . Two business oriented people, who are both single, try to do their job or maybe something to improve their jobs. Which in Ben's case would be a nice bet to make any girl fall in love with him , and in Andy's case she is going t...

AE Housman Reading this poem I had several different impressions. First reading it in a literal aspect I saw a child who ran races and perhaps won. Even if he didn't win he was made to feel like a winner. "And home we bought you shoulder high" (line 4) this says they bought him home proudly but not necessarily that he won. Next something happens to the runner that makes him unable to run, perhaps old age but I think death because of the following lines: Will flock to gaze the strength less dead"(line26) I also think there were key statements throughout to somewhat changed my thought pattern. I...
Campus Racism 101 was written by Nikki Giovanni, a professor at Virginia Tech. Giovanni tells black students how to succeed at predominantly white colleges. Getting into college takes a lot of determination and hard work not matter who or what you are. I thought that Giovanni's comments were pretty funny and creative and I found that the reading was very interesting to get someone's perspective and to be able to say my perspective on the whole situat...

The Prince "The Prince" is a political handbook written by Niccolo Machiavelli as a gift for the Medici family in hope that it would get him back in the family's good grace. though I did not have much of an interest in, and did not understand a lot of Machiavelli's "the prince", of all the choices, I was most comfortable writing about on it, as it was still fresh on my mind from reading. Politics, and things of that nature really are not my favorite subject to read about, so getting into "the prince" I knew it was going to be quite a chore to get through. Though, I was surprised to find that m...

Dreams A dream is a story that people take part in or view in their sleep. Dreams are a work of a person's imagination. They are fictional events that have relation to a person's life. They can be amusing, pleasant, annoying, and even terrifying. Everyone experiences dreams, but they may not however ever recall having any. Dreams are seldom remembered, and if they are most times people remember bits and pieces of what happen...
