... front during the war. These are men who rarely get equal credit as many other war heroes. This book also highlights the main factors why this war generation was being called the Greatest Generation. The people underwent many drastic changes and yet still found the strength to live their lives as "normal" as possible. Even with the constant threat of death ... ...
It is often called America's first great war novel, yet Stephen Crane's The Red Badge of Courage is more than just a tale about the civil war. Each person goes through his or her own personal struggle during the process of maturing. Some have this easy; others strive very hard to reach this goal of development. Although there may be constant struggles, there usually is one major event that creates somewhat of a bridge between childhood and adulthood. The Red Badge of Courage traces the steps and major events in the life of Henry Fleming, focusing mainly on his evolution into manhood. We meet H...

... the slaves were really treated. I have heard many stories before about how slaves were beat, but I never really heard to what extent. Throughout the first ten chapters of this book it talks about how slaves were beat to near death many, many times. For example, just when the book starts in the very first chapter Fredrick Douglas talks about his very ... ...

"I have a dream" was the very first words that were ushered by the great Martin luther king jr. that touched the whole world. This remark gave hope and perseverence to many around the world trying to struggle and fit in with white people. Colored people were humiliated for trying to learn, beaten for trying to walk ,and killed for looking up. What happened to the colored was inhumane and indescent I as an individual stand up for the cause of the "struggle". People like Martin Luther king should have been held up high, people like him didnt care about themselves but cared for only the brothers t...

... that got kidnapped. Point of View: The point of view was a little different in this book than in others that I have read. The point of view is first person, but it switches between Jesse and Marianne throughout the book. Theme: I think that the author is trying to tell us that if you stick together things will turn out fine. Plot: Five ... ...
The story of Cio-cio-san, the eternally faithful heroine, is one of the most wrenching (and well-known) in all of opera. A young geisha is so blinded by hope for a better life that she does not see the truth about the man she loves until it is too late. But look deeper, there is more to this story than we often see. The culture conflict between the East and West is just beneath the surface. In 1900, Japan was discovering the West, both the arrogance and the promise, for the first time. During that time, hundreds of Japanese women married American servicemen and immigrated to America. Countless...
Granted I have been granted a life. A life guaranteed to be fulfilled with love, praise and perpetual freedom. Life has its faults, altercations and unfairness, But learning from the pain, the misery and the dereliction; It gives us strength to forestall from future problems that may surpass us during our frantic frenzy of an illusion. Fretful we may become, waiting on the dreams that we've longed for and the image our loved ones once wanted. Futile we may be, due to the fact that others are jealous of our accomplishments and refuse to see us in such a fortuitous state. Friendly we have to be,...
Critique: How I Learned to Sweep The poem "How I Learned to Sweep" is written beautifully. I like the rhyme scheme and the pentameter. I think its very unique how the author, Julia Alvarez, ties together the sweeping with the broom and the sweeping of the weeds from a helicopter dropping off troops. The lines " our soldiers were landing in their helicopters into jungles their propellers swept like weeds seen underwater- gives you a beautiful mental picture. You can actually see weeds underwater swaying and also weeds being swept down from a helicopter. Another visually strong element is this "...
Alzheimer's Disease Imagine a person you love is wandering the streets not knowing who or what anything is! Imagine, a police officer asking you where you last saw this person! Imagine looking for them and having to always tell them who you are! These can be the affects of Alzheimer's disease (Alzheimer's). Alzheimer's disease is a loss of memory and it can be temporary or permanent depending on how severe the case is. The cause of Alzheimer's disease is currently unknown, but researchers believe that it is one of the following, a slow virus, an auto immune reaction (the body attacks itself), ...
... and despair came to mind. The characters" fate in the play all seems to be doomed for death and tragedy. There were many conflicts that occurred throughout the play whether it is between choosing family over the law, high class and low class, or the decision to do right over wrong. The lost of loved ones was due to the stubbornness ... his reign as king. I found the Greek play, Antigone, interesting to read. There is so much drama and conflict that occurs throughout the play, which makes things even more suspenseful. It makes a person want to keep on reading to find out what happens nex...
... is wrong. Even if the soldier is the last in its family alive, and a mother losing four sons, would be better then 8 mothers losing 1 each of there sons. I also believe it is a waste of the soldier's talents to search for another soldier that may not even want to come home, or may be half across the world ... . It may take years to find Ryan with more then 100,000 soldiers to search threw. Captain James and his crew were lucky to find Private Ryan in the short amount ... ...
With the accumulation of new information, my life has become an ever changing existence. And the profit of these changes has been growth. I have exposed some to a New World created a change in their lives. I have exposed some to love and greater cohesion. And what has this done for their lives? "it has blessed me with the beauty of soul unification. I have realized that my world was meant to be lived as a unit, a unit of unity it is beyond words, the impact that change has had on my life." So, as I have done, barriers should be lifted. Everyone possesses the strength and ability to regulate th...

Book Report summary of, "Bless the Beast and Children" By: I enjoyed reading Bless the Beast and Children by Glendon Swarthout. The story takes place in Presscot, Arizona, where six boys were sent to a camp to make them into men. The six main characters are Goodenow, Teft, shecker, the two Lally brothers, and Cotton. The story had many twist and turns. During the boys time at camp, they were assigned the nickname, "The bed wetters", because of their poor hletic abilities. The boys devised a plan to escape from camp, steel one of the camp's vehicles and drive it to a special ranch and free tons...
... first seen as the unselfish one until she wants to take her father's place as Beast's prisoner. Disney did however keep in the story the idea of the rose, but it is used in a very different way. Instead of the rose being a gift for Beauty, the rose is the beast's curse. They are, however, used in the same fashion because they ... both represent why Beast keeps Beauty in captivity. Another major difference in the two stories is where Beauty and her father lived. In the literary version, it seems that they live in the middle of the woods surrounded by no one. In the movie they are in a to...
... be compulsive but in many cases what one would call obsessive is really a mental disorder. Many people who are obsessive simply are zealous about a certain thing and think about it or do it a lot. When those rituals are designed to alleviate discomfort or dread in a person's life, then there is a psychological disturbance. Sometimes people who have obsessive habits can be characterized as ... ...
What is an ideal hero in epics? An ideal epic hero, a king or a warrior, in Beowulf is similar to that in the Odyssey and many other ancient tales. The whole kingdom will know him. He is always brave and larger-than-life strong. For example, in his battle with the monster Grendel, Beowulf used "bare hands", not some magic sword or an army of football players. The hero is also clever, he outsmarts the enemy with his seemingly mortal capabilities. He likes to brag about himself and his powers a lot, showing his self-esteem and pride. For instance, Beowulf wants the world to know about his majest...
... rugby player to a college third basemen. Other than athletics none of these men shared a common bond between them. I personally have never experienced any acts such as these. ... trial in the instigation of the story the narrator describes, "He aims for me to lie, he thought, again with that frantic grief and despair. And I will have to do it" (375). His father knew his son would tell on him if given the chance, and reprimands him, saying, "You"re getting to be a man. You got to learn. You got ... stick to you" (378). The battle between listening to his heart and following his family and unconditional love imposes on him a hard struggle of the choices of life. He knows it is wrong to accede to his father's intimidating ways, but he does not want to disrepute his...
Beauty is a special word, it has many meanings. Such as splendor, brilliance, vividness, and grandeur. All these words have a meaning of beauty, but they can only hold that meaning when something radiant is standing behind ... words. That radiance comes only from that unique young lady who has stolen my heart away. And with that radiance present, these words have captured my heart, and have stored it away. This young ladies" presence causes my heart to yearn for that radiance. And with that yearning comes a self-conscious feeling of affection for this young lady, who has stolen ... ...
Stress is a huge problem for me in my time of life. Stress occurs when we adapt or adjust to the environment, mentally or physically. Every day there's something new that's stressful. My car will break, tests coming up, all at once of course. All of a sudden they"ll be a problem between me and one of my girl friends. Then to top it off, and it's not even anything hard or so aggravating, my mom would ask me to do something for her after my hard day and school and work, and then I just flip out. There's many ways to release stress though. We've learned in class about taking the yoga breaths and ...
If there is no struggle there is no progress Progression is almost impossible without a struggle in one way or another. The struggle usually involves sacrificing and continuing regardless of ups and downs. Prominent leaders are often times great examples of the correlation between struggling and progression. There are few successful leaders that did not struggle at some point on their ladder to greatness and success. On some occasions a person may have fame and fortune but did not have to struggle to have it. Sometimes a person can have these things through family inheritance or by twisted fat...
