The Most Dangerous Game

When reviewing the short story "The Most Dangerous Game", by Richard Connell you will find that The most Dangerous Game is an example of commercial fiction. When examining the story this theory can be proved by looking at the physical and social setting. .
The physical setting of "The Most Dangerous Game" is clearly an implausible back drop. This short story is set on a far from civilization island nicknamed "Shiptrap Island." The Island has many features on it such as a huge mansion stocked with all the amenities fit for a King or Queen. The Island although miles from civilization is blessed with electricity, a grand mansion made by the owner Zaroff, is filled with the finest furniture, cloths, silks, foods and wines. These items would be extremely hard to come by living in the middle of nowhere on an island that is univestigated by the rest of the world. Although the mansion is outfitted with electricity the aura of lights has not seemed to attract curious exploratory visitors. The Island has a sharp, razor edged, jagged reef conviently in the harbour that is reavealed by lights controlled by a switch in Zaroff's mansion that indicate a channel where there is none misguiding sailors to shipwreck. The terrain on the Island includes deathly swamps, quicksands, mazes of trails, hills and jungle which also seems to good to be true for a hunter looking for the great hunt. The social setting in this story intially is one of upperclass. General Zarroff the gentleman who owns and lives on Shiptrap Island seems to be "a most thoughtful and affable host"(70). Zaroff gives off the impression that he is highly civilized by the way he choses to live and the well mannered conduction. After feeding and clothing his guest Rainsford, Zaroff openly admits to his barbaric behavivior of capturing, training, releasing and hunting humans, which is clealy demonstates an absence of morals in any society.
