It seems most people are either unconcerned or ignorant of the American style of Democracy. Many might recall in the 2000 election that Al Gore had the popular vote - meaning more U.S. citizens wanted Gore than Bush - but Bush won? The Electoral College - which consists of politically adept professionals who decide for us who will run our government - was designed by our founding fathers as a way to avoid crucial decisions being made by the politically inept populace. This per se isn't a bad method. If you are sick, you wouldn't poll average people on the street corner as to a prognosis, you seek the advice of a medical professional. So it is on such a premise the Electoral College system works. However, in our greedy corporate society, large sums of money contributed to campaigns by large corporations tend to shape the political agenda of our elected leaders. What turned the tide in 2000 was the Florida debacle, after which an out of court settlement reached with the NAACP over election fraud, "confirmed Greg Palast's report that the election was rigged."" In lieu of this, should we feel content that our only channels through which we can demand change (i.e. free elections, petitions, etc.) amount to nothing more than a good source of polling information? But what can be done? We live in the "land of the free."" a democratic republic where we all have the right to vote, to make change as we see fit, "for the people, and by the people - however in the matters of government we are repressed by those who have our elected officials by the pocket book.
