Marriage, Love, Pride and Prejudice

 

She is different from the rest of the woman in the novel because she is not willing to settle for anything less than love and would rather live her life as a woman's helper when it comes to marriage. .
              When Mr. Collins was introduced to Elizabeth it wasn't a good a conversation. Elizabeth thinks of Mr. Collins as a "a conceited, pompous, narrow-minded, silly man" (pg.115) but Mr. Collins is too ignorant to notice that.  Introduction to Elizabeth is not a pleasant one although he is too ignorant to notice. When Mr. Collins had proposed to Elizabeth she rejected him. This type of situation as unheard of in the 1800's and was a landmark in the novel. In today's society, rejecting a man you don't love is an understandable concept because why put yourself in a position where you have to live and care for someone you actually don't. During Jane Austen's time, a situation like this wasn't ever considered. Especially because Mr. Collins was the type of man every woman wanted. He was socially desirable and could provide Elizabeth with a good social status, a home, and stability for the Bennet family. But realistically, Mr. Collins would have drove Elizabeth insane and she could not love him. At this point in the novel, the audience understands that Elizabeth's views on marrying for love isn't too much to ask for, but she will never be truly happy until she is married for the right reason. .
              The marriage between Darcy and Elizabeth reveals the characteristics which add up to a successful marriage. One of these characteristics is that love cannot be all about appearances, and must grow between the two people as they get to know one another better. Darcy's first impression of Elizabeth was that she was " Tolerable but not handsome enough to tempt me" (pg13). He was not at all attracted to Elizabeth up until he got to know her true personality. Darcy then admits that "My feelings will not be repressed.
