Remember the Titans and Glory Road

 

            The polarizing effect of civil unrest, crippled the United States during the 60s and early 70s. Nowhere was it felt any stronger than in the sports arena. From the world of sports, figures like Jesse Owens, Jackie Robinson, Arthur Ashe, and Tiger Woods have become poster pinups who represent America's struggle to overcome its background of racism. Jerry Bruckheimer produced two sports drama movies that explore some of the prevailing issues of civil strife this nation faced. Both are based on true stories dealing with the racial history of American sports. "Glory Road" is a movie about Don Haskins Cinderella team, with an all black starting lineup, winning the 1966 NCAA basketball championship. .
             "Remember the Titans" is based on a less known racial episode, the integration of two Alexandria, Virginia high schools in 1971. At the movie's core is the racial struggles which are overcome by the T.C Williams football program, to produce a winning season. As these movies unfold, it is interesting to observe the uniqueness of each. As the events of these two movies are relieved, let the resolve to end racial strife and bigotry be forged a fresh. As a nation we must never lose sight of how we have arrived, lest history be repeated.
             To determine the superiority of either of these movies, one must consider the level of talent the actors contribute to the movie, a relevant theme, plot, and storyline and finally the factual representation of events. "Glory Road" is a Hollywood story of the 1966 Texas Western College basketball team that changed the game for ever. The team's coach, Don Haskins, (Josh Lucas) made a decision to start five black players for the first time in NCAA championship history. In doing so, he begins to break down the color barrier in collegiate sports.
             Director James Gartner cast the 1966 Texas Western team with brilliance.
