A Non-Coercive Teaching Environment

I plan to make a community of my classroom where my students can lean on me and their peers. The first day of school I want to discuss my policies and procedures; asking my students their opinion and possibly making changes if I feel it would benefit the class. From there I would ask the students to go home and review the rules with their parents, again making sure everyone is aware and comfortable with my classroom expectations. If everyone was comfortable with the classroom policies we would move on to our normal classroom schedule, if not we would work together to come up with a solution. However in the end I, as the teacher, will always have the final say so and will explain to my student why I have made the choice I have.
To help make my classroom community I plan on having seating arrangements, in groups of three to four, that change at least once a month. I will make a seating arrangement that will be posted on the wall, next to the door, that way when my students come in they can look at it and know where to sit. I want the seating arrangement to be changed frequently so my students have the chance to work with multiple classmates, thus helping to build a community. I realize that I will have students that don't want to work with others or be in groups with certain students. However I feel that the experience can be a learning tool; teaching students that there will be people they don't enjoy, but they must be respectful and tolerant of them anyways. This seating arrangement will also help in the multiple settings I want to create in my classroom. There will be times I want my students to work individually, in their small groups, or have a whole class discussion, thus allowing for the multiple settings to take place easily. I also want my students to use each other as resources. For example, if they are working on a math problem and can't come up with a solution, I want them to discuss it with their group, if they are still having trouble I want them to raise their hands so we can discuss the problem as a class.
