Homyk was struggling with his stutter and the depression of his parents divorce, some kids were bullying him on a website called Ask.fm and he just could not take the ridicule any longer (Dickey 41). Ask.fm is a website designed for people to be able to ask one another anonymous question, this site has been a factor in at least sixteen teen suicides since 2012 (Dickey 42). According to Sam Laird, "Bullied kids are twice as likely to commit suicide as non-bullied kids, one in five cyber bullied kids think about taking their own lives, one and ten attempt suicide, and each year about 4,500 teens succeed in killing themselves"(Laird). Although the most dangerous, suicide is not the only effect of cyberbullying, "the relationship between involvement with cyberbullying and adolescents' tendency to internalize issues (for example, the development of negative affective disorders, loneliness, anxiety, depression, suicidal ideation, and somatic symptoms)" (Nixon 144). Cyberbullying is not the only threat from others on social media, cyberstalking is another growing problem. Social media and the internet have completely changed how easy it is for people to communicate with one another, they have made accessing information about a person and contacting them so unchallenging that unwanted contact and identity fraud happen more often then it should. According to Chris Poitrowski, "Cyberstalking is largely viewed as inappropriate, unwanted social exchange behaviors initiated by a perpetrator via online or wireless communication technology and devices" (533). Cyberstalking is consider by many to be an extension of stalking so it has not gotten the attention it yet deserves. The growing number of social networking sites has worsened the effects of cyberstalking over the past 5 years (Poitrowski 533). Who are these cyberstalkers? "Recent research shows that, in terms of profile, cyberstalkers tend to be well educated, struggle with Internet addiction, and are over the age of 16; many are college students" (Poitrowski 533).
