.
Mise-en-scène within the video is also used to support the narrative of juxtaposition. For example, throughout the advert, both men are seen to be consuming food on a number of occasions. Grandpa's diet is presented to be balanced and healthy in comparison to his grandson's. The encoder uses a close-up first person camera shot (See appendix 1) to draw the decoders' attention to the comparison between the balanced portions of healthy, home-made food with that of the larger, unhealthier meals which are consumed by the grandson. This theme of differences is further seen as the narrative portrays grandpa as someone who can enjoy his meals in a relaxed manner. For example, Grandpa's breakfast is enjoyed at the table with a newspaper and his lunch is enjoyed away from the stresses of work, situated in the park, which gives him time to enjoy the fresh air and clear his mind. In comparison, the grandson is seen to be rushing his breakfast to beat the morning commute and spends his lunch at his desk, consumed by work and pressure (See appendix 2). .
Further elements of mise-en-scène act to support the already established theme of differences and promote Grandpa's routine to be healthy and active. Grandpa's active routine is portrayed through the use of props that are used to reflect the technology of that particular era. For example, props such as the bicycle, revolving door, manual typewriter and use of stairs are all used to represent a more physically demanding day for the 1950s working man. In comparison, props such the car, automated doors, the lift and the use of the office PC can all be seen within the Grandson's day and their use portrays a more convenient yet less physically active way of life. These differences reveal how technology has developed between the times of the two generations and this forms the idea that modern-day technology is actually contributing to bad health because its use, although convenient, has taken away an active lifestyle.
