Horseracing is a sport full of emotions. There are a diverse number of individuals participating in these spectacles. Some of them are placing bets on their choice of a horse; others just there for the mere joy of sport, but most have their hearts on one particular horse to be their winner. These horses have all kinds of names, and people generally go with horse that has a name that represents them the best. Souvenirs are bought at times to remember the races and even toys for the children who dreams of becoming a jockey or have a horse of their own one-day. Horseracing at most times, kills a person's soul because sometimes the affects of losing can be miserable. In D.H. Lawrence's "The Rocking Horse Winner", the author uses symbols such as the rocking horse, the racetrack, and the names of the horses to depict disappointment in the lives of the characters.
In the story, the rocking horse symbolizes Paul's determination to be lucky. Paul is introduced with the dilemma that his family needs more money to become happier. Paul searches for his luck within the wooden rocking horse. This horse is only a child's toy, but it is his imagination that helps him to find how to become lucky. "He knew only the horse could take him where there was luck, if only he forced it" (203). On his horse, Paul enters a world of his own were he rides, trying to find how to stop the voices of his house taunting the phrase, "There must be more money!" (201) Paul's perception of the wooden horse perception as a real horse helps Paul place bets on the names of the winning horses at the races to earn money. Paul goes into a deep concentration when he is on the wooden rocking horse, but the downfall of his wooden horse is it brings him disappointment. It's taking away his childhood and bringing more responsibilities of an adult, which are the demands of money. Paul rides his wooden horse in an attempt to become lucky, but what the horse is bringing his family is the need for even more money.
