Compare and contrast the 2 films Matrix and 7even

In this essay I will be comparing two films, "The Matrix", and "Se7en". I will discuss the use of cinematography, the genres of the films, and how effective they are. I will also look at the characters, action, plot and atmosphere created, and how these are aimed at each film's target audience.
The genres of the two films are slightly different. "The Matrix" is a science fiction action thriller, which is made apparent in the first 6 minutes of the film. It begins with the FBI trying to find out a telephone number. The screen displays hundreds of bright green numbers on a black background. The camera slowly zooms in on 6 numbers. The only sound at this point, is a conversation between two people that are not named at this stage. This adds a mysterious and intriguing side to the film. The opening image could be seen as quite bizarre and unusual. This scene is followed by a "tunnel" of green letters that the camera travels down; there is a light at the end of it, which could be interpreted as "the light at the end of the tunnel". This convention creates a science-fiction genre, as it is clearly not a "normal" scene. I think that this was the directors" intention, and it clearly states that it is a science-fiction film.
The beginning of "Se7en" is somewhat different, as it is slower moving. It begins with Lieutenant Somerset getting ready in the morning. There is no speech for the first few minutes, highlighting the background noises, which include sirens and shouting outside. This gives the impression that he lives in an area with a high crime rate. Apart from this, the opening scene is quite calm, as it just shows somebody getting ready in a morning. I think that this will make the audience relaxed, and almost lulled into a false sense of security, allowing the murder scene, and the opening credits to make a larger impact. From the opening 6 minutes, I can see that the genre of the film is crime thriller with a lot of psychological twists.
