V. Unwillingness to think critically .
A. Taking the easy way out. .
B. At the beginning of the movie when the men were voting, only one man voted not guilty, juror #8. As he was explaining why he voted "not guilty", juror # 10 interrupted and said, "When you think too much you get mixed up." This shows that juror # 10 was satisfied with hearing the evidence that was presented in the trial, and not thoroughly analyzing it to sort through facts and opinions. He was obviously unwilling to think critically about the situation, but was willing to sentence the boy to death without giving it a second thought. .
Errors in Reasoning: .
I. Overgeneralization .
A. A conclusion not supported by enough data. .
B. There was many examples of overgeneralization throughout the movie. However, the best example of overgeneralization took place when juror # 10 says that all people from the slums have cruel intentions because they"re brought up that way." This kid on trial, don't you know about them, there's a danger here, and these people are dangerous."- Juror # 10. He later concludes that all children from the slums are menaces to society, born liars, get drunk, none of them care about death or killing because they have no feelings. He also states that these people are no good. This is overgeneralization because he is assuming that all people who were born in a certain area conduct him in the same manner. .
II. Ad Hominem Attack .
A. A form of name-calling used to direct attention away from someone's evidence and logic (or lack there of). .
B. The second vote that took place in the movie was by secret ballot. When the votes were tallied up there were 2 not guilty votes. Someone else had changed his mind. The other 10 jurors who had voted guilty were furious. At this point juror # 3 accuses juror # 5 of being the one who had changed his mind. He assumed it was juror # 5 because he, juror #5, was also raised in the slums.
