Ethiopia, located in the horn of Africa, has a total land area of about 1.2 million square km and a human population of over 60 million. It is one of the oldest and poorest countries in the World. The per capita national income is about 110 US per annum. Health services are almost non- existent. Child and women mortality is one of the highest in the world. The education system is so backward and ill equipped in terms of facilities and manpower. The proportion of school age children that have access to school is so meager, with the percentage decreasing in high schools and in tertiary education institutions.
The country's economy is predominately based on agriculture with a substantial population of livestock. The agricultural sector contributes to over 90% of the GNP. However, crop production is based on traditional system with inadequate inputs and the use of age-old farm implements. Animal production, although extensively practiced in the country, contributes far below its potential. Very little effort is also being made to protect the natural resources base, mainly soil, water, and forestry resources.
