The historical context of the book plays a vital role in the civilization that we live in today. The United States involvement in World War II was key to the Allies' success in the war. By the United States providing economic support to their Allies, denying support to the enemy, distributing information, creating key strategies and putting forth so much force in tactical battle the Allies won the war. In essence, if the United States was not involved in the Allied movement against Europe, the European Axis powers would have won the war. The European Axis powers, which consisted of Germany at this time, invaded Poland on September 1, 1939. Poland was a weak force. Their army consisted of thirty divisions, compared to Germany's fifty-four frontline divisions and fifty-six reserves. Poland had one tank to Germany's twenty and one plane to Germany's seven planes. On top of that Poland had no antiaircraft guns to fend off the Germans. So, the Polish depended on the French and British, who had declared war on Germany, to aid Poland's counterattack against Germany. Yet, the French were only prepared for a defensive war and Britain had insufficient military equipment to aid the attack. America, though having nothing to do with the war, began aiding the allied attack by passing a law making it illegal to send material assistance to belligerent countries. Poland was crushed in three weeks. The United States again viewed the problem that Britain was facing and attempted to come to the rescue. America realized the amount of British ships that were sinking in the Atlantic and spoke to Winston Churchill.
