Dolly, the first cloned sheep was introduced to the world. In 1998 more than 50 mice were reported cloned from a single adult mouse over several generations. Also 8 calves were reported cloned from a single adult cow. But neither the mice nor the calves survived long. The claves, in addition grew abnormally large at birth. In the year 2000, pigs and goats were reported cloned from a single adult cell. In 2001, a 6 celled embryo was produced in a research lab aimed at Art-Harvesting stem cells. In 2002, rabbits and kittens were again cloned from adult cells. Attempts at cloning dogs, monkeys and chicken have been unsuccessful. This is because some species are more resistant to somatic cell transfer than others. Over 90% of failures were reported and besides, the process was expensive. .
Finally on December 27th, 2003 "Clonaid" claimed to have produced the 1st human clone named Eve. This is the 1st time a child was born who was not a genetic mix of the mother and father, but an identical copy of the mother. Eve was born to a 31 year old American who was part of the controversial UFO based cult called "Clonaid" founded in Bahamans in 1997. According to the leader of this cult, mankind was created by aliens by means of genetic engineering!.
In addition to people questioning the very ethics of reproductive cloning in humans, it is very doubtful, without DNA testing to support the claims of the controversial cult about Eve, especially since their other claims are so far fetched and unrealistic. .
Another birth was announced in New York of a boy called Adam Nash, who once was referred to as the 1st cloned human baby- this time sans UFO cults, virgin births or secret labs in unnamed countries. He is said to actually possess the genes he was designed with i.e. those actually selected to give specific traits. .
DNA cloning as mentioned earlier refers to the transfer of the DNA fragment of interest from one organism to a self replicating element.
