The novel "The Great Gatsby- was written in the 1920's by the novelist Scott Fitzgerald. The story is a narrative one wherein the life of the central character of the story "Gatsby- is seen through the eyes of his neighbour Nick Carraway who is the narrator of the story. Fitzgerald was inspired to write this novel based on his own life. He as a young man pursued a girl who offered an entrée into a world that he coveted which inspired the central character of his story "Gatsby- and his love Daisy'.
Analysing the passage we see that the narrator uses words and phrases interestingly trying to describe his emotions and his opinions about the lifestyle of his neighbour "Gatsby-. We can see that he feels disgusted about "Gatsby's- extravagance when he says that On weekends his Rolls-Royce becomes an omnibus' and his station wagon acts as a makeshift taxi to and fro to the station.
The author is often ironical when he jokingly states that there is a machine in the kitchen which could extract the juice of 200 oranges in half an hour if a button was pushed 200 times by a butler' ridiculing the idea of such a thing and feels sorry for the butler. The author on various occasions throughout the passage shows his disapproval of "Gatsby's- extravagance like when he talks about the orchestra and the pyramid of pulp less halves'. It is interesting to note here that the author uses the word pyramids instead of piles just to show the grandness and the hugeness of "Gatsby's- extravagance.
The author structures the passage very well using various devices to illustrate various points. The author uses the device ambiguity when using certain words such as blue gardens' where the word blue' can have two meanings. One meaning is that the author is trying to symbolize that "Gatsby- did not have a garden but since his house was on the coast the sea was his garden. The second meaning could be that the author just wanted to write blue gardens' to symbolize that Gatsby did everything differently and his house and lifestyle were different from a normal person.
