History

The first slaves were brought to the New World in 1607 by the Dutch. As more countries from over the world began to search for land in the New World, slaves were beginning to be brought over along with them. In the English southern colonies, colonists first used indentured servants, who worked to pay off their dues for several years. The masters soon realized how weak and easily the servants died and if they survived, the servants would leave in a few years, therefore causing them to find another indentured servant. From 1607 to 1775, slavery had went through an tremendous growth. As the colonies began to grow economically and socially, the colonists began to realize the importance of having slaves, people who were their property to keep for life. The slaves could withstand the harsh climate. They were cheap considering they were able to keep them forever, and they were easily replaced if one was to die. Another advantage of having African American slaves to work in the New World was because of their geographic disadvantage.
The geography and the climate in the New World was a drastic change from Africa for the slaves. The African American slaves were sent to the New World because they were able to withstand the climate of working in the rice and tobacco plantations down in the south. The slaves were generally well built; they were stronger than the white indentured servants. The indentured servants who worked out in the plantations could not withstand the heat and humidity because it was hostile to their health. The labor was life draining in the environment. Thus many of the servants became very sick, and some even died out in the fields. Having ownerships of slaves was also an advantage for the slave owners because they would be easily replaced if one was gone, and if one was to run away, they would easily be caught due to their skin color. If a slave was ever to run away, they would not be familiar with the terrain around them and they did not speak their language.
