There were some things that were controls and others we could change around, known as variables. Some of the things we would consider controls were having the same size bags, water, amount of seeds, amount of dirt, and paper towels during the whole project. There were also things that we changed around. We had the same amount of dirt and mud yes, but it wasn"t from the same places. We had dirt and water from under a Spruce tree, by the sidewalk of the highschool, and just plain tap water. This would decide how the seeds were going to grow, so it was important that we had those variables to work with. .
When doing this project, it was somewhat of a long process. To begin with we had to get all of the dirt that we needed. We had some from Mrs. Albrecht and then we also ha to get some from our own spot that we chose. We went out and got our dirt from out by the sidewalk. We did this simply by me picking up the mud/water with my hands and carrying it inside very quickly. Once we got all of the mud inside, we put it through a filter with paper towels as the filter and a bottle at the bottom to catch all of the water. When we got all of this filtered we then poured it onto the paper towel in a plastic bowl. We let it get all soaked up and then poured out all of the extra. This is how we measured how much to put on the rest of the paper towels. For us, it ended up to be 12 ml of water. Then, after we had all of the paper towels soaked up we added the seeds. We did this by inserting them in between the paper towels so they got moisture from all of the sides. We then put them in plastic bags so they would retain the moisture that was already in them, and we set them on the back table in the room and waited for them to grow. We checked them every 3 days or so for about a week, and wrote the observations that we found. This was pretty much the extent of the project that we did with the radishes.
