Causes of French Revolution


            
             The most main cause of the French Revolution was the need of the middle class people to gain some form of power in the government to protect their rights against the powerful monarch. .
             One of the reasons they needed more power is because of the injustice in the amount of taxes each person must pay. As in Document I and 2: "The lands owned by nobility are taxed very little. Lands held by commoners are taxed heavily. " The middle class people listed grievances against the king on taxes and voting rights. Document 3, the cahiers called for fairer taxes, freedom of press, and regular meetings of the Estates General. They pointed out "in order to assure the third estate the influence it deserves because of its numbers its votes in the assembly should be taken by head- This is due to the fact that there are more commoners than nobles in the country, and the commoners never had the right to vote. This would give them the rights to have the government make tax on land be equal among all classes. The poor people also suffered greatly because of the high price of rent owed to the lords and the high price of food which caused hunger. This suffering and injustice caused the peasants to riot and rebel against the nobles. .
             The middle class turned to the ideas of the Enlightenment to gain equality during.
             French Revolution and the poor people turned to rioting to try to gain some power because they did not have the knowledge the middle class people had. Document 4 states the philosophers and thinkers of the Enlightenment period used methods of science to help improve society. They felt that businesses should be allowed to grow without the influence of the government. The United States used also used the ideas of Enlightenment to help form the American constitution that was considered to be a democratic nation. This government was developed to serve all the people equally and protect their rights.
