The Consequences of Bullying

Bullying has always been an issue since the first start of society. The little and the weak have always been tormented, put down, and belittled by the bigger and the stronger. Bullying is a serious matter, it can be seen as simply a joke at first, but when taken too far, it can put lives at stake. Bullying is not only physical, but mental. Verbal attacks from others can be just as painful to a victim as a hard punch. In this day and age, verbal bullying has also grown. With the impact of technology and social media on todays world, cyberbullying has now become a very serious issue. The sad part of this all is that when thinking of bullying, it is common to think of it in elementary, middle school, and high school. But in fact, it still takes place in todays colleges and the work field. No matter how early it started, it can always have an impact later on in someones life. Bullying is a nationwide issue that needs to be reduced in our society, the fact that it can continue into College or the work force is a sad reality and must be taken seriously.
Frank Adams and Gloria Lawrence discuss this issue in the article, Bullying victims: The effects last into college. In this article, they discuss wether those bullied in elementary, middle school, or high school, continue to show the effects of being bullied after they enroll in college or some form of higher education or workforce. In the article, Adams and Lawrence explain how victims at the college level, have histories of being bullied in past years. Also, that because they were bullied, many victims become bullies themselves. Adams and Lawrence also explain that some view verbal, mental, and physical abuse as a rite of passage, or a form of initiation at times. The writers of this article are intending this to be read by people of authority to forms of education, or to be read be read by the general public, as a way to spread awareness of this issue and to understand the impact bullying and how it can affect everyone, not just the victim.
