Imperialism in Africa and India

The natives were treated as nothing to the Europeans. They were forced to contribute in harsh working labor for very little pay. The supremacy of the west took away all the cultural values and traditions that Africans had once held so treasurable. An example of the violence that went on during the time of the imperialism was the great quarrel over South Africa. The Boers, and the British conflicted all over the land to find raw materials found in Southern Africa. The Boers were Dutch farmers living in South Africa who attempted to push the British north. The discovery of diamonds and gold brought more and more foreigners into the province. The Boer War was fought in 1899 but in the end the British came out triumphant, as they had advanced weapons and machinery with modern tactics. .
             By 1857 Britain had a great deal of control of the subcontinent of India. It was run by the British East India Company, in which it was only interested in gaining profits and ignored the Indian's cultures and needs. The British trained an army of Indian soldiers known as the "Sepoys". They planned a rebellion because they had to bite off bullet cartridges that were greased with pork or beef fat. Most of the soldiers were Muslim or Hindu and these animals were against their religion to eat. The "Sepoys" rose up against the officers and the violence spread quickly. Due to this revolt the British took control of India and brought an end to the East India Company. .
             The British offered a single organization of law and government that unified India. They opened up the job market and gave more people the opportunity to get a proper civilized education. English became the official language of India in order for the British to unify it. Despite all these positives, England ruled by terror. They would show events of horror to the public to intimidate them. They approved laws without taking the natives requirements into thought.
