Developing Theories Based on Data

"It is a capital mistake to theorize before one has data. Insensibly one begins to twist facts to suit theories, instead of theories to suit facts" (Arthur Conan Doyle). Consider the extent to which this statement may be true in two or more areas of knowledge.
             Response .
The quote definitely speaks truth unto the creation of theories and is correct in the when pertaining to many areas of knowledge including history and science. Theories are known to be a an array of ideas that are intended to explain or prove s something, especially based off of general principles of knowledge that is obtained. Theories are usually made with a collection of data, but without data theories seem to be a disfigured sense of imagination. Data is needed in order to provide your theory with the label reasonable thinking or else no one will believe what you present to them especially if they believe they gained no data. It is better to have data before your theory and if you collect data that contradicts your theory, change it rather than twist up facts.
One example of a theory that was made pertain to the historical area of knowledge would be the Salem witch Trials. The Salem witch trials included an in depth witch hunt of women within Massachusetts in the early years of 1692. It all began from the daughters of a preacher in the small town of Salem who had a nanny from Haiti who they believed put black magic into the girls. They began screaming, having fits and going against the normality of the young girls during this time. They were to believe to be witches and spreading it to about 200 hundred people. During the witch trials they killed about 20 people who were suspected to be witches. The theories that they came up with to discover if they were witches was based off of not any other knowledge since it was the first time it had happened. They claimed that when person was dunked in the water if they floated then they floated after dyeing they were a witch and if they stayed under they were innocent.
